I have a few ideas actually but this one is somewhat similar to the original plot, & the Spanish are still there but also they are the bad guys. Also Miguel & Tulio ain't white no more lol so heres idea one that I first came up with, its gunna be long so if you dont wanna see, scroll fast:
Takes place in 1615
Tulio is actually a Japanese Samurai named Taro, one of the few hundred sent to Mexico by Date Masamune in the 1600s. Hes given the name Tulio by the Spanish. Miguel is his best friend maybe boyfriend
Míguel is black, Muslim, & also his family was from Spain. a scholar. He's being sent to Mexico for studying the Indigenous peoples there, similar to Bernadíno de Sahagún. He's also written some controversial bits advocating for the Native peoples so the Spaniards don't like him
Chel is named Ch'umil actually & also descended from Oxlahuh-Tzʼiʼ & is Kaqchikel Maya. Her family moved from their Kingdom Iximche after being forced to by the Spanish
Tzeckle Khan is named Tze’enïk, a respected priest who accompanies his close friend Ch'umil. He's very devoted to her & hes known her since she was tiny!! He promised her grandfather Hun-Iq' that he'd keep her safe. He also taught her a lot of stuff & she's very educated. Very wise.
Now!! The plot:
Taro & Míguel are in central America for different reasons: Taro as a mercenary sent from Japan, & Miguel as a scholar to study the Indigenous people there. Originally they travel & peruse with a bunch of Spaniards wandering about, & they hear some conquistadors talking about trying to find the city El Dorado, a supposed city of gold. Taro is like "oh neat" but Miguel is like "FOOLS that can't be right" but he's interested in it academically & has been following the rumors about it.
They start travelling to a Maya city (now overtaken by the Spanish) in southern Mexico & The boys learn that the purpose of their party going there was to take some gold from the city, and that the ppl they're with have already done this to other places. Miguel (who sympathizes with the Indigenous groups) protests this, & gets into an argument with the conquistadors. This almost costs him his life before Taro steps in. Taro also protected a Maya person from the Spaniards earlier so now there is immense tension between the group.
They're left for dead the next morning with no food or supplies & become lost in the jungle. But OOH the conquistadors get into a SKIRMISH with some Indigenous peoples! The Spanish lose lol they dead. Taro and Miguel happen upon the scene days later & get some of their stuff back. They find a horse but keep wandering lost
They stumble upon Ch'umil!! She's hauling some gold with a few Maya warriors as well as some injured K'iche civilians. The group doesnt know whether to attack Taro & Miguel or not bc theyve just witnessed some secret business but also they obviously look different from the Conquistador bitches? Just as they're about to get into a scrap, the person Taro protected steps in & vouches for them. The boys are allowed to go with the group on the condition they keep their mouths shut
They travel for a few days until they come to... El Dorado!! But actually it's a hidden city that has become a haven for those who've lost their homes to the Spanish as well as a temporary cache for gold (& other artifacts) that has been reclaimed from the Conquistadors who stole it. Taro is like "Oh, neat!" but Miguel is like " :O !!" & REALLY fangirling out.
Surprise! Ch'umil is the leader of El Dorado & the main force of anticolonial efforts in the area, with Tze’enïk as her right hand man, advisor, & spiritual leader. There's still tension between Ch'umil & the boys bc she doesnt know whether to trust them, so some conflict comes from the boys trying to prove they're different from the conquistador hoes. Ch'umil initially likes Taro more because she DESPISES the Spanish, so Miguel has to explain he has been oppressed by the Spanish too.
They're allowed to stay for a while until Ch'umil can arrange for them to have an escort home with supplies & pesos they took from the conquistadors earlier. The boys have a grand time! They participate/witness a traditional holiday led by Tze’enïk, they watch a ballgame, get to know the locals, Miguel gets to learn some scholarly stuff from Ch'umil & Taro makes some warrior buddies. Also the three of them are falling in love :')
OH NO THERE IS TROUBLE. Turns out the Spanish are looking for Taro & Miguel & are dangerously close to the city, so now they are trying to close off the main entrance to the city. Tze’enïk deploys some warriors with Taro to cause a distraction in another area so that Miguel & Ch'umil can close the entrance a la pillars.
It's a success!! They regroup &, by way of stalking the unsuccessful search party looking for Taro & Miguel, they find out that another community is at risk of being pillaged by the Spanish. Taro & Miguel decide to stay with Ch'umil after all, & help her rescue the mentioned community.
"We'll follow their trail!" Ch'umil declares, & they stalk the conquistador party while their small band of warriors from before go another route to meet them & fight off the Conquistadors.
Queue El Dorado by Elton John.mp3. Also if you're Maya & wan a add/change/critique/etc ANY of this be my ABSOLUTE guest!
,I'm no film maker but j have thought of a plot to change el Dorado and make it not a cesspool of racism
