the sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon, casting a golden glow on the water as you sat on the sand, legs crossed, your surfboard lying next to you. the upcoming surf competition was just hours away, and the familiar thrill of the waves should have filled you with excitement. but instead, a heavy weight settled in your chest.
you sighed, brushing a hand through your hair, eyes focused on the endless ocean before you. in theory, you knew you were a solid surfer, you had the skills, the practice, and the determination. but as you sat there, watching the experienced competitors already warming up, self doubt started creeping in.
"what am i even doing here?" you thought, biting your lip. you could feel that old insecurity bubbling up, the part of you that always seemed to undermine your own accomplishments. maybe you were just fooling yourself. maybe you weren’t as good as you thought.
baxter showed up just as you were sinking further into those thoughts, his presence as casual and laid-back as ever. you heard the soft crunch of sand under his feet before he dropped down beside you, his eyes scanning your face with an easy smile.
"looking like you’re about to take on the world. or...maybe not," he said, leaning back on his palms and gazing out at the waves.
you forced a small smile, but it didn’t reach your eyes. “yeah, well... i’m not really sure why i signed up for this thing.”
baxter frowned, shifting his weight to get a better look at you. “what’s that supposed to mean? you’ve been killing it on the board all summer.”
you shrugged, pulling your knees closer to your chest, the familiar feeling of doubt gnawing at you. “yeah, but i don’t know... i’m not like them.” you gestured toward the surfers already in the water, cutting through waves like it was second nature.
“they’re pros,” you continued, shaking your head. “i’m just...me. i can’t compete with them. i’m not as fast, or strong, or–”
baxter cut you off with a quiet scoff. “there you go again.”
you blinked, turning to him in surprise. “what?”
“downgrading yourself,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “i’ve seen you do it before. you’re always acting like you’re not good enough, like you don’t deserve to be out there, even though you know damn well you’re more than capable.”
your mouth opened in protest, but baxter raised an eyebrow, daring you to deny it. the truth of his words stung a little, and you found yourself staring at the sand instead of arguing.
“i don’t get why you do it,” he continued, softer now. “you know you’re good. you wouldn’t have gotten this far if you weren’t.”
you let out a small, humorless laugh. “i just... i don’t know, bax. sometimes it feels like i’m fooling myself, you know? like i’m pretending to be someone who’s got it all together when really...i don’t.”
baxter was silent for a moment, and when you finally looked up at him, his gaze was steady, thoughtful. he wasn’t one for deep conversations, but right now, something in his expression was more serious than usual.
“hey,” he said, his voice low but sincere. “you’re not fooling anyone. least of all me.”
your heart skipped a beat at his words, a strange mix of comfort and something else settling in your chest.
he shifted closer, dropping his elbows on his knees as he continued, “you know, i’ve been hanging around you all summer, right? seen you handle every challenge that comes your way, whether it’s wiping out or picking yourself back up. and no matter how many times you mess up, you always keep going.” his eyes softened, his usual playful edge replaced by something more real. “that’s something not everyone has.”
you swallowed, feeling the weight of his words sink in. he was right. you did keep going, even when you felt like giving up. even when that little voice in the back of your mind tried to convince you otherwise.
“and it’s not just about surfing,” baxter added, his voice dropping lower. “i’ve seen how you carry yourself, how you help people out without even thinking twice, and you’re always putting others before you. but you never seem to see that, huh?”
you blinked, caught off guard by the sincerity in his tone. “i...i guess i never thought about it that way.”
baxter nodded, as if he expected that answer. “of course, you didn’t. you’re too busy tearing yourself down before anyone else can. but here’s the thing, no one else is tearing you down. they’re probably looking at you and thinking you’ve got everything figured out.”
for a moment, the only sound between you was the steady crash of the waves. you didn’t know what to say, the weight of his words settling into your chest, making you realize just how hard you’d been on yourself lately.
“i guess i’ve just...always been like this,” you admitted quietly. “second guessing myself, thinking i don’t measure up. it’s hard to shake.”
baxter was quiet for a moment before he leaned in just a little closer, his gaze locking onto yours. “yeah, well...maybe it’s time you start seeing yourself the way i see you.”
your breath caught in your throat at his words, your heart suddenly beating a little faster. “and how’s that?” you asked, trying to keep your voice steady.
he smiled, that usual teasing glint back in his eyes, but this time there was something warmer behind it. “someone strong. someone who doesn’t give up, even when things get tough. someone who’s better than they give themselves credit for.”
you stared at him, taken aback by the sudden vulnerability in his words. baxter wasn’t the type to get all mushy, but right now, the look in his eyes was completely genuine.
“and for the record,” he added, his voice softening, “i... kinda like you, too. just thought i’d get that out there.”
you blinked, completely caught off guard. “wait, what?”
he shrugged, leaning back again, trying to play it off as casual. “yeah, i mean...you’re a pain in the ass sometimes, but i like you. and i’d hate to see you sell yourself short when i know just how great you really are.”
your heart was pounding now, and you could feel heat rising to your cheeks. you hadn’t expected this, any of this, but it was suddenly all too real. you glanced down at your hands, trying to process everything he had just said.
baxter didn’t push for a response, though. he just let the words hang in the air, giving you time to take it all in.
finally, after a long moment, you looked up at him, a soft smile tugging at your lips. “thanks, bax. for everything.”
he smirked, his usual confidence returning as he stood up and stretched. “don’t mention it. now, come on,” he said, offering you his hand. “let’s go show those other guys what you’re made of.”
you hesitated for only a second before taking his hand, letting him pull you to your feet. and as you stood there, the ocean stretching out before you,
you couldn’t help but feel a little lighter, a little stronger.

Baxter Radic Blurb
Finally finished season two of surviving summer and I love Bax’s character. He also deserved better so I’m giving him better. I’m giving him you babes <3
“How about that one?”
Looking down at his hand he looked over the tattoo she was pointing at. The slim reddish pink lollipop tattoo with small font along the white stick. Smiling at her he shook his head, “it’s just something small…I’ve always had it.”
Her eyes narrowed as she shook her head in return. “You didn’t have it before you left Queensland.”
Baxter bit back the chance to tease her for being so observant with his body. He held back as he tried to think about something to say to distract her. Nothing came to mind and he knew she wouldn’t buy into a lie.
“It’s new, got it my first week here,” he finally admitted to her.
The Queensland surfer smiled at him, “I’m loving this honesty streak. I’m guessing that Summer girl really got through to you, huh?”
“It wasn’t Summer,” he mumbled.
She craned her head back to look up at him in her seated position. “Then—then who? Or what? You’ve never been so open before,” she trailed off.
“Maybe, I don’t need to explain myself.”
She frowned grabbing his hand, “don’t do that. You always pull back when things feel tough for you. I’m sick of it, why can’t you just tell me the reason? Are you worried I’ll laugh or something? You know me better than—“
“It’s not that!” He exclaimed looking down at her. Running his free hand through his pink hair he shakes his head. “I know you wouldn’t do that, you’re too nice for that. Too nice for me,” he whispered.
“Don’t say that, you’re an amazing guy Bax…not many are like you. You don’t have to tell me about the tattoo just please don’t shut me out. It’s like ever since you moved to Shorehaven you’ve been reluctant to even message me.”
The way in which she was pouring her heart out to him left a sour taste in his mouth. Sitting beside him was the girl he grew to like quite a lot before having to leave. Tweaking his ear with his fingers he looks anywhere but at her. “I—it’s not your fault. I just thought if I avoided you it would make things easier.”
“Make what easier?”
“The fact that I like you and even if I were to tell you I’d find a way to fuck it up like I do everything else.”
The confession made the air around them feel heavy. It wasn’t like him to openly admit his feelings. But then again he had changed since moving away from Queensland. “Bax. Actually listen to me, I want you to know that what happened wasn’t your fault. You were drunk, we were all raging and someone dared you to do it. What you did wasn’t the reason you all had to leave, you know this. I don’t blame you and neither do the others. You’re a great guy,” she spoke calmly as she still held onto his hand.
Looking at her he let out a sigh, “I know that but it still feels like I had a part to play. Even if it wasn’t my fault I still fucked up. The second I got here I messed things up for my new team. I just think I’m causing myself problems.”
“You only think that because you’re so used to taking the blame. I promise you, you’re not at fault and it may take you a while to believe that. But trust me I’ll never blame you for things I know you didn’t mean to do.”
Leaning forward slightly his forehead rests against hers. His bright blue eyes searching her eyes for a hint of falsity. He found none but still he inquired, “promise?”
Raising his pinky he holds it out for her, keeping her forehead to his she locks hers around his. “I promise.”
Moving away from her he smiles keeping his pinky hooked with hers.
“Oh and Bax, I like you.”

the competition grounds were buzzing with anticipation. surfers from all over the coast had gathered, boards in hand, ready to prove themselves in the water. it was one of the biggest events of the year, and everyone who was anyone in the surf scene was there. including you and unfortunately, him.
baxter radic
from the moment you’d locked eyes in the registration line, you knew he’d be trouble. he had that infuriating, cocky grin plastered on his face, the kind of look that screamed arrogance. you’d heard his name thrown around in the surf circuit for months, whispered in conversations about “the guy who never plays by the rules.” and now, seeing him in person, you understood why. his vibe was effortlessly cool, but the way he strutted around, as if he owned the beach, set your teeth on edge.
“looks like the competition’s heating up,” baxter had said that first day, flashing you a smirk as he glanced at your board. “you sure you can handle it?”
you’d shot back, not missing a beat. “you should be asking yourself that.”
from that moment on, it was war. in the water, on the sand, wherever the two of you crossed paths, the tension was thick. you couldn’t stand his smug attitude, the way he’d ride a perfect wave and act like it was no big deal. and baxter seemed to take every opportunity to needle you, pushing your buttons with every offhand comment and mocking glance.
the competition itself was grueling, each heat bringing you closer to the finals. and much to your dismay, baxter was always right there, matching your every move. he was good. annoyingly good. and worse, he knew it.
“guess i’ll see you in the finals,” he had said after one particularly close heat, dripping with saltwater. you’d rolled your eyes, refusing to let him see how much it riled you up.
and yet, despite the rivalry, there was something else simmering beneath the surface. you’d never admit it, but there was a strange kind of energy between you two, an unspoken challenge that kept drawing your attention back to him. it was frustrating, confusing and if you were being honest, a little thrilling.
the final heat had been neck and neck, with both of you tearing through the waves, executing near-perfect moves. but in the end, the competition didn’t matter as much as what came next. after the winners were announced and the crowd had thinned, you found yourself sitting alone on the beach, exhausted but wired, staring out at the waves. that’s when baxter appeared, dropping down beside you with a casual thud.
“you surfed well,” he said, surprisingly genuine.
you eyed him warily, unsure of where this was going. “thanks. so did you.”
a silence hung between you for a moment, the sound of the ocean filling the space. then, almost out of nowhere, baxter let out a small chuckle, shaking his head. “you know, i never thought i’d say this, but... you’re not half bad.”
you snorted, crossing your arms. “wow, high praise coming from you.”
“i’m serious,” he said, turning to look at you, his expression uncharacteristically soft. “you’re good. you push me in the water. i like that.”
for the first time since meeting him, you saw a side of baxter that wasn’t just cocky or arrogant. he was...honest, maybe even a little vulnerable. and it threw you off balance.
“don’t get used to it,” you muttered, though there was no bite in your voice.
from that day on, things started to change. you’d both been picked for the same sponsored team, something that initially had you groaning in frustration. working together seemed like a recipe for disaster, but surprisingly, the more time you spent around baxter, the more the dynamic between you started to shift.
sure, the banter and teasing were still there, but it had lost its edge. instead of feeling like he was constantly trying to one-up you, there was a strange camaraderie forming. he’d give you pointers during practice, and you’d challenge him to push his limits. it was competitive, but in a way that made both of you better.
and then there were the small moments. the way his hand would linger on your shoulder a little longer than necessary after a tough surf session. the way he’d grin at you across the lineup, not in mockery, but in a shared understanding. slowly, the rivalry that had once driven you crazy was turning into something else, something that neither of you knew quite how to handle.
one afternoon, after a particularly intense training session, baxter caught you before you headed out. his usual smirk was gone, replaced by a more serious expression that immediately put you on edge.
“hey,” he said, his voice lower than usual. “can we talk for a second?”
you frowned, adjusting your board under your arm. “what’s up?”
baxter hesitated for a moment, then ran a hand through his hair, clearly searching for the right words. “look...i know we didn’t exactly get off on the right foot. and i’m not great at this kind of thing, but...i’ve gotta be real with you.”
your heart skipped a beat, the air between you suddenly feeling charged. “what do you mean?”
“i mean, i don’t hate you. not even close,” he said, looking directly at you, his eyes serious and unflinching. “in fact...i think i’ve kinda been trying to convince myself that i do because—well, because i don’t know how else to deal with this.”
“this?” you echoed, trying to keep your voice steady, though you already knew what he meant.
baxter nodded, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “yeah. this. us. i guess what i’m trying to say is... i like you. a lot more than i thought i would.”
for a moment, all you could do was stare at him, your mind racing to catch up with what he was saying. the guy who had spent the last few weeks driving you insane with his arrogance and teasing was now standing in front of you, admitting that he felt the same pull that had been gnawing at you since the day you met.
“i... i don’t know what to say,” you finally admitted, feeling your cheeks flush.
“you don’t have to say anything,” baxter said, his voice soft. “i just... i couldn’t keep acting like this didn’t matter. i want to figure it out. with you.”
and in that moment, as the sun dipped low on the horizon and the waves crashed behind you, you realized that maybe this rivalry wasn’t about winning or losing at all.
maybe it had been leading to something much deeper all along.

𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑎 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟.
PAIRING: baxter radic x fem!reader WARNINGS: 'unrequited' love GENRE: angst to fluff SONG INSPIRATION: treasure by bruno mars WORD COUNT: 1.1k
navigation | ask | surviving summer masterlist
it was like she had superpowers. very annoying ‘superpowers’ at that.
summer had only known you for two weeks and had found out your long term crush on your best friend.
at first it was only little things like the way you’d lean a little too close to him as his arm loosely wrapped around your shoulders as he talked to his friends. tightening his hold if you moved even an inch away from his touch, doing so without breaking conversation.
the smile on your face just proved how much of an effect it had on you, knowing that even in his subconscious he was thinking about you, even if it was only slightly.
the way you’d find him what you thought were the prettiest seashells and even though you’d also surf and make sure you had enough food and water for the two of you since you had a feeling he’d steal yours. definitely not because you know how much he loved your cooking.
there was an endless list of things that summer could have listed off to you and she did but even with her trying to give you the kick up the ass that you needed to confess how you felt, it just made you even more anxious. if she found out that you liked him that easily then how obvious was it to him?
so you distanced yourself from him, slowly but you did.
starting with taking longer to reply to his messages or sometimes not even answering them at all.
making your morning surfs more spread out throughout the week, carefully keeping yourself out of arm's reach quite literally.
with stopping everything that was your norm you felt like you almost lost a part of yourself in the process.
being away from bax took a toll on your mental health even if it had been a couple of weeks, the realisation that the scent of his cologne on your pillow was fading made you sob loudly into your other pillow.
his touch was something that you missed the most. you didn't realise how much he used to before he wasn't able to at all. missing how his body practically wrapped around yours as he hugged you. god you missed his hugs the most.
staying out with the girls definitely eased your pain, even though they didn’t agree with the way you were dealing with this they were still there for you.
it had been just a little over a month of going no contact and even though it had been hard to do with being in the same friend group and all. you still did it.
whenever you'd look over to look at him, he'd already be looking at you. the act made your breath hitch, making you turn away and rejoin the conversation again.
everytime you looked into his big puppy dog eyes you would nearly cave, it was like they were begging for you to come back.
but you didn't!
. . .you may have just stayed in for the night whilst your friends partied or you genuinely would have.
eating your feelings in the middle of the night always helped, well that was before baxter decided to fall through your window nearly making you choke.
“bax? what are you–?” you uttered.
“no you’ve gone this long without talking to me you can wait a little longer, darlin’,” he coaxed as he walked over to your bed, towering over you in the process.
he's not normally one to do this so you just nodded as he sat in front of you, your knees knocking against each other as he did so.
baxter being this close to you after so long made you nervous, there was nowhere for you to run. it was time to face the music. “why have you been avoiding me? i've been trying to give you your space, but…”
“i couldn't go any longer without you, without knowing if it was something that i did wrong.” his eyes were glossy as he looked down at you.
and there it was. the last thing you wanted was for him to think he did something. hed only ever helped you and comforted you. all the guilt and regret came rushing back, the very thing that you had been trying to protect him from with his sisters is what you also made him feel.
leaning over wrapping your arms around his neck, pulling him into the biggest hug. “i'm so sorry, b. it's not you i promise.” his arms engulfed your waist bringing you even closer to him.
you stayed like that for a while, the two of you not even noticing since you had always been this close.
“god i've missed the way you smell.” he joked as he nuzzled his face into your neck and deeply sniffed, tickling you and making you laugh in the process.
pulling away to go back to sit down again when he pulled you into his lap.
“baxter!”
“i love it when you say my name.” his voice lower now, all signs of joking were long gone. his eyes flickering from your eyes to your lips.
he pushes a strand of your hair behind your ear, leaving his hand to sit on your cheek. his thumb draws circles on your heated skin.
“so. why have you been avoiding me?”
your eyes drift away from him, body tensing with anxiety. “hey! it's just me, you can trust me.”
timidly glancing back at him. “i can't pretend anymore.”
he gives you a reassuring smile for you to continue.
“i'm in love with. . .you.”
“oh. my. god. the reason why you haven't talked to me in a month is because you love me?” he questioned, his grip loosened on you making your heart drop.
“yes.”
before you could say anything else he tackles you onto your back and begins to tickle you.
you laugh so hard that you’re out of breath as he continues to relentlessly tickle you.
he eventually stops, chuckling at your breathless state, “you- you little shit! ive been in love with you forever! ever since i met you at that surf shop to be exact.”
he was now hovering over you, arms either side of you trapping you in.
“you have?”
“yes!”
“why didn't you say something?”
he deadpans as if the answer was obvious.
“okay, okay fair.”
silence takes over the two of you. “so what now–?”
he leans down, closing the space between you, his lips brushing yours. the initial shock dissolves as you melt into the kiss, your hands running up his torso to rest on his chest. he pulled away only to not get too far as you tugged him closer to leave long pecks on his lips, making him smile into them.
“damn you can't get enough of me already?” he playfully wiggles his eyebrows at you making you laugh.
you felt stupid for doing what you did, but extremely happy with the outcome.
