Flamboyance Redeemed

My dear sister, I am writing to you to apologise profusely. When I went to the bathroom in that pasta restaurant where we’d met up, it was with the intention of returning to our table within minutes—after all, I’d been looking forward to spending a cosy day together. I couldn’t possibly have foreseen that when I opened the door, a veritable legion of flamingos would be waiting for me on the other side.

“We need your help, Alice,” they told me, and they explained that the madness of the Queen of Hearts had broken its own boundaries. She had recently decreed that every single flamingo, the entire flamboyance of them, had to be red instead of pink—as red as all her other possessions—and while the flamingos had remained placid when the Queen was using them as croquet mallets, they couldn’t possibly accept wearing a colour so badly suited to their style.

As I understood that their revolution against the Queen had put these flamingos in grave danger of decapitation, I didn’t return to warn you before I travelled deep into Wonderland once more, but it didn’t matter how fast I ran, for the landscape around me didn’t change for weeks and weeks. Finally I did reach the Queen, and all I could think about was getting back to you—and so I described to her what a lovely plate of spaghetti we’d had, with the tastiest, most satisfyingly red sauce. I told the Queen that surely the flamingos would be very good cooks, as they can use their long necks to mix ingredients together, and upon that revelation she pardoned them immediately and employed them in her kitchens to make a variety of red-sauced dishes.

I stayed only to make sure the flamingos settled in well and were treated kindly, and now, to my relief, I have at last found an opportunity to explain to you what really happened, dearest Lorina. Now you see that the circumstances were quite different from what you’ll have been imagining, though it must have been obvious that even I wouldn’t zone out in the bathroom for literal weeks…would I?

Yeah, I prepared my morning meds for work. Two epilepsy medications, one for stomach protection, one blood thinner and one antidepressant.

What do you like on your pasta / noodles? Sauce, butter, grated cheese, etc.?

Bolognese sauce or that creamy tomato sauce with mushrooms, and lots of cheese.

Ultimately, do you believe nature controls man or that man controls nature? Explain.

Ultimately, nature always wins. Look at the abandoned places, nature takes over them.

Do you think it’s wrong to put yourself before others? In what sort of situations?

Sometimes you have to take care of yourself first in order to be able to care for others. I think it's normal and healthy.

Do you know someone who is so charming, they could get away with anything, and then do?

I know a lot of charming people, but thankfully they're normal.

Have you ever known someone who seemed to have time for their significant other, but no one else? Have you ever acted this way?

Yeah, I know someone like that. It's kinda toxic, I think. My husband and me give each other space while being loyal to each other, so no, I don't act this way.

In school, are / were you ever reluctant to ask questions? What about to answer questions? For what reasons?

Yes, I was. I think it was some combination of anxiety and autism. I was doing million times better on written exams.

Are any of your friend’s, parent’s, or sibling’s name in a song you know? What song?

Not that I know of.

Have you ever read any novels by Agatha Christie? If so, which ones? Did you enjoy them? Do you generally enjoy mystery books?

I don't think I've read any of her works, honestly. I have no preference for book genres, though. If I'm engaged in a book, I will read it, no matter what genre it is.

Are most of your clothes baggy or tight? Which do you prefer?

Baggy and it's definitely what I strongly prefer. I actually wear clothes that are about one or two sizes bigger.

Are you wary of displaying signs of affection for your significant other around adults? Why or why not?

I don't really display affection even in private, so it's not really applicable to me.

Who was the last person you carpooled with? Where did you go?

Tania, for work. But she moved out and we had to inform the HR about it.

Have you ever had red velvet cake or carrot cake? Have you ever made either of those?

I think I had red velvet once, but I've never had carrot cake.

Who is the most ungrateful person you know? What makes them this way?

Probably my mum, but she had a really difficult childhood, so it affected her mentally. I can understand it, honestly.

Are you good at guessing? What types of things are you good at guessing at?

Nah, I'm not.

Has your favorite band / artist ever toured Europe?

Well, my favourite bands come from Sweden and England, so it speaks for itself.

Who was the last person you heard from that you were surprised to hear from? Was this a pleasant surprise?

That one friend who cut off ties with all of us long time ago. He send me a message, like, two years ago, wishing me all the best, and called me "his little brother", like he used to. This was the first time I heard from him after all these years, and the last one ever.

Don’t you just love french fries with melted cheese on top?

It's not what I'm used to as a Belgian, but our Burger King serves fries with bacon and cheese and both me and my husband like it. It's a nice alternative to our traditional fries with mayo.

What is your favorite take out food to get? What do you usually order?

I just ordered Bavet today, it's a cool pasta restaurant in our city. Usually I like McDonald's, particularly their fish burgers.

Is the room you’re in carpeted or is it a hard wood floor? Are there any rugs?

Neither, there are tiles. It's a standard to have tiles in the living rooms in Belgian houses. We only have rugs upstairs, and the floors upstairs are hardwood.

WHERE YOU LIVE: 1) What are the best and worst things about your neighborhood?

The best: architecture, nature parks, swans and duckies in the water canals. Worst: definitely tourists. It's a tourist spot and tourists are everywhere here, 365 days a year, causing our public transport to be late/delayed. Another bad thing is living in the city centre - wherever you go, you have to pass the bridge because the city centre is surrounded by water. And the bridges are often opening for industrial boats. That creates traffic and you might end up being late.

2) If someone gave you an extra $5,000 for your house and only your house, how would you spend it?

I don't know, we rent our house, so it's not, in fact, ours. We're not allowed to make any major changes here, except for painting the walls and such. So probably this.

3) If someone outside of your town or city visits you for the first time, where would you take them out to?

The Church of Our Lady (even if you don't believe in God, it's worth visiting for the Michelangelo's sculpture), variety of museums (we have some *weird* ones like museum of beer, fries, torture (really) and such. The Belfry, I would take you to the top of the tower so you can see the city from the height, if you're not scared of heights. Market Square, the architecture is mesmerising. Burg, you'd see our old city hall where people still get married, and the buildings with ornaments made of real gold.

4) If you had to order a quick takeaway for dinner, where would you go to?

McDonald's, Burger King, or Quick (it's our own fast food chain, found only in Belgium). We have variety of kebab places, my favourite is Pitta Reco, they make great kapsalon with mushrooms. For pizza, we have Dominos and Pizza Hut. For pasta, I love Bavet, they have crazy names for their dishes and vegan options. We have great sushi restaurants and Chinese restaurants, my favourite is named Chinese Wok Brugge (although it's better to have a dinner there because they don't do takeout), or Nakhon, best soups and duck.

5) What’s a random fact about where you live?

It's famous for lace making.

THE LAST HOUSE YOU VISITED THAT WAS NOT YOUR OWN: 6) Whose house was it?

I think it belongs to Peggy and Dieter.

7) Why did you visit and how long did you stay?

We visited because they became parents and we got invited to visit them and their baby daughter. We stayed for a few good hours.

8) What do you think about this person’s house?

It's still unfinished, so it looks pretty raw, but knowing Peggy's aesthetic, it's gonna look marvellous soon. She has a good eye for beauty.

9) If you can take or copy something from their house, what would it be?

Their Christmas tree. It's big and last time it was decorated all pink and white.

10) What about their house would make it difficult for you to live there if you had to?

The fact that it needs to be finished. It's still a lot of work.

THE LAST RESTAURANT YOU ATE AT: 11) What is the name of the restaurant, and what kind of cuisine do they serve?

Chinese Wok, we went there together with Stephanie and Bogdan (double date, you know :P). It serves Chinese food, as the name suggests.

12) How did you first find out about this restaurant, and what triggered you to try it?

I found it out from my husband's ex, she recommended it to us. We like Chinese cuisine, so we were looking for recommendations.

13) What did you order and how would you rate it?

Oh my, we had a full dinner there. Appetisers, soups, main courses, and even ice cream for dessert. It was amazing.

14) What do you like best about this place? What about it could be improved?

Everything is great, but it's so crowdy because people love this place.

15) Would you go back? If so, what would you order the next time you do? If not, where or what would have been a better option than going there?

Definitely, a full dinner again. Too bad it's expensive af.

THE LAST PLACE YOU VISITED THAT WAS MORE THAN 45 MINUTES AWAY FROM YOUR HOME: 16) Where did you go and what did you do there?

De Panne, it's near the French border. I visited the sea.

17) How did you get to this place? How comfortable was the trip?

By train. It was comfortable as I found a place to sit, but yeah. One of the trains was late and I had to wait over 30 minutes for the other one.

18) What about this area do you wish exists in or applies to where you live?

I wish it was closer to the sea, too. Where I live now has about 5 to 10 km to the coast. Not like it's far anyway :P

19) Do you know anyone who lives in this area?

No one in particular, actually.

20) If you had to live in this area, what kind of housing arrangement would you choose?

Apartment by the beach.
