Book review: Battle For Bittora by Anuja Chauhan
Blurb: Twenty-five-year-old Jinni lives in Mumbai, works in a hip animation studio and is perfectly happy with her carefree and independent existence. Until her bossy grandmother shows up and announces that it is Jinni’s 'duty' to drop everything and come and contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from their sleepy hometown, Bittora. Of course, Jinni swears she won't. But she soon ends up swathed in cotton saris and frumpy blouses, battling prickly heat, corruption, and accusations of nymphomania as candidate Sarojini Pande, a daughter of the illustrious Pande dynasty of Pavit Pradesh. And if life isn’t fun enough already, her main opposition turns out to be Bittora ex-royal, Zain Altaf Khan – an irritatingly idealistic though undeniably lustworthy individual with whom Jinni shares a complicated history. . . [Goodreads]
Review: Jinni's family-free life is about to change when suddenly her grandmother shows up at her workplace. This isn't some sweet old woman but the great Sushma Pande, a respected politician in their hometown Bittora. With the Lok Sabha (House of the People) election coming up Sushma Pande wants Jinni home. Not to support her but to run her own campaign on behalf of their party, PP. Jinni plays along, not really taking anything of this seriously (politics is her grandmother's thing), until she comes eye to eye with her old friend Zain Altaf Khan, her competition.
After dragging me into cricket (The Zoya Factor) Anuja Chauhan has managed to grab my attention with a story about Indian politics. Jinni is your modern-day girl. She made a life of her own in the city, regularly talks to her mom on the phone, and wants more but doesn't know what. For a good portion of the book, Jinni just plays along with whatever her grandmother wants. She gets into the most bizarre situations and meets a lot of interesting characters - kleptomaniac Gudia aunty has to be my favorite.
Now, let's talk about Zain Altaf Khan. Where does Anuja Chauhan come up with men like Zain and Nikhil Khoda? Just like the captain of the cricket team, Zain is confident, perhaps also a little arrogant. He knows what he wants and isn't shy about going for it. I really liked the personal and professional dynamic between Jinni and Zain, their pushing and pulling. I also appreciated the subject of interfaith romance, which I've often seen in Bollywood movies, but rarely get to read about in books.

hey!! this is about anuja chauhan and i think you are spot on! i think she has very upper cast feminism tendencies and i once saw her post something terfy as well...and this shows in her books.
in the house the bj built there is a line where eshwari says that she wanted to take a working class man and bathe him and make love to him and it was SO GROSS...and i think that is the extent of her feminism.
those pricey thakur girls worked for me politically cos she didnt have to criticise people like herself and was criticising a vague Bid Bad.
i was extremely uncomfortable in battle for bittora especially with jini excusing her grandmothers bigotry and asking zain to simply get over everything the latter said....its also interesting that zain was as or even more elite than jini and is one of her two non-upper caste hindu heroes, same with dylan. i also side eye her for the whole 'zain running on the fake b*p ticket'
as for club you to death, i disliked everyone in that book except the cop. the hero was not great but i do think she caricaturised people like herself well.
i feel like she works if she stays in her lane but everytime she tries to do something seemingly radical it isnt great, but i havent come across any romcom authors like her in india so theres that...
you've basically hit the nail on the head, that when she's staying in her lane its not so bad - but every time she tries to do something radical, she messes up pretty strongly. i liked both those pricey thakur girls and the house that bj built because they were so funny, and of course, the politics was graspable and largely within her lane (i remember that line by eashwari. ew.). one thing i have noticed however, is that she is AWARE that the idiosyncracies she writes about are upper caste. when the five aunts are at the police station in the house that bj built, she says that the police didn't know how to deal with so many upper caste women. like yeah, there is a level of self awareness there. she tends to aestheticise the commentary she has on rich delhi, but she is AWARE of it.
in Club You to Death i think this is most obvious. that part where she talks about the school, TVVS? i s2g, that was a dig on TSRS, the shri ram moulsari school. GENUINELY, like the names of the girls being tia pia gia also??? ALSO SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK I GUESS but the way in which bambi todi did the murder???? yeah 100% i can see a girl from TSRS doing that. like the thoughtless way in which she kills the man, the number of murders she does to cover it up, failing her way upwards into accidentally almost getting away with it. hapless but cold murder. yeah checks out.
chauhan also mostly got the satirisation of the gymkhana club correctly. where she fails i think is thinking that these upper caste spaces provide any meaningful resistance to hindutva. i just DIDN'T buy that the members of her DTC club were called anti nationals in this universe?????? after being called anti national every single family gathering by vivek fufaji who is actual real life member of delhi gymkhana, i simply DO NOT BUY that these people are meant to provide a barrier to increasing saffronisation. especially because hindutva isn't always orange yogi adityanath's. its very often businessmen and vanguards of the old order wearing three piece suits.
but the biggest flaw of the book was how much it overstates the space taken up by upper caste people in the minds of those who are not as objects of envy. the victim of the case is supposed to be somewhat obsessed with the club members, extorting them but wanting to be part of them or whatever. he's framed as half a villain himself, and again - i just don't buy it. i DON'T think non upper caste people are that obsessed with being upper caste, i doubt they want to be a part of whatever we offer in a cultural sense, and its really disingenuous to make it out like that instead of pointing at the root of the problem, which is wealth inequality. someone WOULD murder if they had a single source of income and their boss cut their pay, they won't do it because they hate their boss for hosting garden parties and not inviting them. i think. i haven't been part of any murders as a victim or a perpetrator so thats the extent of my knowledge 😔😔😔
idk, maybe im completely off base. the police officer was wonderful tho, i really liked both him and his wife.
and like you said, there really isn't a romance writer like her in india. i think she generally means well, and for what its worth she comes for public demonstrations from time to time. she just gets things wrong pretty often, just the perils of being upper caste in some senses. god she's GOOD at writing romance, like she really is, she sells you on the couple.
anyway thank u for such a detailed ask!!!
#the people??? want me to answer???#hello void this is ridiculosity#i talk about books for the hundredth time like its a new thing#anuja chauhan#indian politics#south asian writing

The battle to find a co-star
The battle to find a co-star - The Battle Of Bittora is again a heroine-driven project. With Sonam K. Ahuja’s pairing with the Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan in The Zoya Factor going for a toss, Sonam and her sister Rhea Kapoor are wondering whom to sign for their prestigious home production The Battle Of Bittora? The much-delayed film was to initially star Sonam Kapoor with Fawad Khan, immediately after they made a solid combination in Khubsoorat. But Fawad Khan had to abruptly leave Bollywood, and the film was put on hold. While Sonam worked with Dulquer in The Zoya Factor, she felt he was the right fit for The Battle Of Bittora. But now, with The Zoya Factor proving a box office dud, the hunt is on for a new male star to be paired with Sonam. A source close to the development of the project reveals, “The Battle Of Bittora is again a heroine-driven project. With Sonam as a producer, most, if not all, leading men would feel they would be sidelined.” Until recently, an actor as brilliant as Rajkummar Rao had the confidence to play second fiddle to Kangana Ranaut in Queen and Judgementall Hai Kya. But now, Rajkummar is doing a film like Made In China that revolves around his character. Sonam would find it increasingly hard to find herself leading men who would be willing to let her take centre stage. The battle to find a co-star Read the full article

Actress Sonam Kapoor Writers True Rockstars Of Cinema
New Delhi : As someone who grew up with a love for the written word, actress Sonam Kapoor believes good literature is the backbone of films and writers should be given their proper due.
Early in her career, Sonam worked in "Aisha", a story inspired by Jane Austen's famous novel "Emma" and the actor, who has been named the brand ambassador for Jio MAMI festival's 'Word to Screen' initiative, says she is always open to good book adaptations.
Sonam Kapoor said the 'Word to Screen' initiative can be a great platform for those looking for good content.
She Told PTI "Hopefully, we can make content the king. Writers are the rockstars. Technicians in general are not given their due credit because when you are behind the scenes, you are less in the public eye. Writers are the backbone of any film and they should be given more due," Sonam Kapoor and her sister, producer Rhea Kapoor, have bought the rights to two books - "Battle for Bittora" and "Govinda".
"Both are amazing books. 'Govinda' is a fictionised version where Krishna is being superhero. We have not thought about how to get this ahead. 'Battle for Bittora', we got the rights three years ago. It will happen next year. I don't know if I will be a part of it or not as an actor, hopefully. It depends on how it is written."
Sonam kapoor believes there is more fun in adaptating book to screen as there is a familiarity with the characters but also the scope to interpret and imagine.
"I feel sad that younger generation of people do not read many books. We are trying to promote the fact that through books, we get amazing films. Film adaptation is an important market for the industry."
The actor said one of her childhood aspirations was to become a librarian as she thought it was the best way to be surrounded by books all the time.
"Words are mightier than sword. Today, when there are polarising views on social media and in media, where people are using words without even understanding the consequences of it, more importance should be given to how words can affect and impact the way people think.

I was tagged by @dolores-wyatt to answer 11 questions, make 11 questions, and tag 11 people
If you could make a book/series into film(s), which book would you choose, and who would you cast? I’d make Anuja Chauhan’s series of books into movies (Those Pricey Thakur Girls *was* made into a tellywood series , but it was absolutely awful from episode 1.) - Battle for Bittora: Anushka Sharma (Sarojini), Ali Fazal (Zain Altaf Khan) - The Zoya Factor: Taapsee Pannu (Zoya), Sushant Singh Rajput (Nikhil) - Those Pricey Thakur Girls: Kareena Kapoor (Anjini), Jimmy Shergill (Anand), Huma Qureshi (Binodini), Aditi Rao Hydari (Debjani), Rahul Khanna (Dylan), Alia Bhatt (Eshwari), Varun Dhawan (Satish) - The House That BJ Built: Parineeti Chopra from her Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl days (Bonita), Aditya Seal (Samar)
What’s something you did in your childhood you wish you could still do? Read 2 - 3 books a week, pick up languages super quickly.
A global population ‘shuffle’ occurs and people are switched into new countries. What country would you choose to live in that’s not your own? What country has sunlight until 7 pm, a constant temperature of 17 - 25° C, and a good human rights system in place? That one. (If such a country doesn’t exist, I choose Turkey.)
You get $10,000 to spend on a holiday, where do you go and what do you do? The ~fanciful answer is Southern Europe; France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Malta. The realistic answer is North India, so I could take advantage of the exchange rate, lol. I’d go to Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan, and live in all the gorgeous palaces.
What animal/creature are you most afraid of? Creepy crawlies like spiders, scorpions and the like.
If you were forced to repeat one random act of kindness every day (same act, different recipients), what would that act be? Pay for a girl child’s education.
Name one celebrity you’d give a personality makeover to Parineeti Chopra, probably. I used to really like her before she got all fatphobic and annoying.
If you could learn one language instantly, what would it be? Arabic.
Which celebrity do people most often say you look like? If no-one, who do you wish you were a lookalike of? I don’t get many celeb comparisons, but someone once told me I look like Smita Patil which was super flattering, and tbh, super not true. I wish it was, though.
What’s the one thing you can never buy enough of when you go grocery shopping? (aka the thing you have 10x too much of) Potato Chips. I’d live on only potato chips if I could.
What’s the name of your favourite childhood stuffed-toy? A teddy bear. Named “Puppy”. That I’m cuddling right now. Yup.
I’m too lazy/overwhelmed to make up new questions, but I tag @aaya-ranjha-mera, @azurelakes, @masterjinoras, @muthu-chippi, @mylanchii, @rangdeenis, @aadhiskanmani, @tereishqnachaya, @arnavsinghraizada, @gehraiyaan and @xspacesuperhero!

Sonam Kapoor wishes Anand Ahuja on their 2nd wedding anniversary with a cute post
Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor and her husband Anand Ahuja celebrated their second wedding anniversary today (May 8).
On this occasion, Sonam shared a special post and penned a heartfelt note to wish her hubby on their wedding anniversary.
Sonam Kapoor wishes Anand Ahuja
Sharing an adorable picture, Sonam wrote in the caption that this is their first picture together, from four years ago. The goofy picture shows Sonam kissing Anand’s cheek, while he has his eyes shut. Sonam wrote, “4 years ago today I met a vegan who could do complicated yoga positions and speak about retail and business with the same ease. I found him unbelievably cool and sexy., he still makes my heart race and grounds me at the same time. Nothing compares to you @anandahuja , your compassion, kindness, generosity and smarts are incredibly attractive but so is your moodiness and your annoying perfectionism.”
“Thank you for being my partner and standing beside me for these 4 years. They have been my most fulfilling. Happy happy anniversary husband. I’m soo thrilled I get to keep you for the rest of my life. I love you the most and I know you love me the best and the most. That I promise you is the greatest gift I’ve ever received. ❤️ #everydayphenomenal”
