Both in the Infant Strife and the Battle of Rakuyo arc, Gintoki wins a fight against an opponent lacking normal eyesight who compensates in other ways and is still dangerous (Batou much moreso than Nizo, but Nizo does have good feats).
In both cases, not only does the narrative first fool the audience by following along with the opponent's mistaken view of reality, but when the truth is revealed it's still perhaps not entirely clear to everyone what really happened, or at least how the opponent was deluded.
And then there is what happens in chapter 703...
Was this aspect of the other two fights foreshadowing that final battle?

The time machine speaking in Shoyo's voice... ;___;
...Gintoki inside the Enmi!Gintoki, unable to stop his body's actions - like Shoyo inside Utsuro?
shouka sonjuku trio & the yorozuya kids (BFY ver.)
aight imma ramble nonsense bc ao3 is still down and my life is nothing but distant memory JSDAHFJDS
we all know how it went: shouyou was taken from his kids, one he permitted himself possibly because he was possibly convinced that they would be safer if they were the farthest from him, seeing as he knew who he has to protect them the most from. it may also be that the vow of change that he took since oboro was too strong that he never thought of retaliation, thinking that in doing so would mean betraying oboro; even when that meant being together with his remaining kids. truth be told, if shouyou wanted to fight; he would've emerged victoriously. the man could take on the entire universe and get whatever he wishes, and yet he yielded. but whatever reason it may be (we weren't given closure on this one :3), it led his students further into the hell he was protecting them from. then he fell, "died" at the very hands of his own precious students. and that ripped them apart, again no closure as to what really pushed them but one could make a few guesses. be it the fact that takasugi and zura couldn't stand that they were to weak and had to let gintoki carry all the burden, or gintoki's guilt eating him alive thinking he took shouyou from zura and takasugi (other shit but that's a whole other fic JSGDJGD) and although eventually zura and gintoki found their way back to each other, rebuilding their bond and forming many others, shouyou's capture and alleged demise brought on far too many scars for anyone to truly recover (especially takasugi). but they try, anyway. zura and gin at least.
then we have kagura and shinpachi in be forever yorozuya, who fell apart because just like his sensei, gintoki disappeared. gintoki had them running in circles after him, desperately trying to find him just like how he, katsura, and takasugi led a war in order to reach shouyou. but when time passed and gintoki's death was easier to accept than whatever helplessness kagura and shinpachi felt, they fell apart as well; went on separate ways and had growing animosity towards each other, the same way gintoki and takasugi (at least) had, albeit lesser than that of the older men.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
similarly, both shinpachi and kagura kept a piece of gintoki with them; like how zura and takasugi carried their shouyou-sensei's handwritten text book safely tucked against their chest (i am under the impression [and this is canon to me idc] that both men had never left it off their persons, always carrying it wherever they went to) which eventually shielded them from fatal blows that could've claimed their lives or at least seriously injure them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when the end nears shinpachi and kagura came together for gintoki; like what gintoki, zura and takasugi did for shouyou in the latter chapters of the silver soul arc/the final movie.

Thoughts about Kagura
Tumblr media
Kagura was the reason I started watching Gintama, I think that explains everything. Her fight against Abuto was the first approach I’d to the series and I remember being surprised that a girl would’ve such an intense fight. At the same time, watching other videos, I found it strange that her voice was so squeaky and that she’d such a childish attitude.
The contrast is something that defines Kagura, not only as a character, but also with the medium. Unlike traditional heroines, Kagura doesn't have a love interest, she's a girl with no sex appeal and who isn't afraid to be impolite. That doesn't take away from the fact that she’s someone who’s very strong, both physically and mentally, and is still feminine, even if she has behaviors that could be considered masculine.
I love that she's silly but has a big heart, which has always shown through her interactions with others. She is one of the funniest characters in the series and balances the Yorozuya in terms of warmth and craziness (Gintoki is colder, Shinpachi more focused). Also, the fact that she has found in Gintoki a father figure and in Shinpachi an older brother is very sweet.
Tumblr media
This is because the relationship with her biological father and brother is the main conflict Kagura faces. I honestly wish this had received more attention throughout the story, more serious battles, see her struggles against her yato instincts; but I understand it's probably because Sorachi didn't have a clear plot from the beginning, just loose ideas.
However, when the family drama unfolded in Rakuyo arc, I was somewhat disappointed that the conflict focused primarily on Kamui and Umibozu, rather than between Kagura and Kamui. It felt like she played a supporting role in her own story. On top of that, some elements didn't make much sense and overall the execution wasn't the best.
Despite this, there's no doubt that Kagura was one of the characters that changed the most throughout the series. She matured, became more grounded, and went from seeing Earth as a strange land to seeing it as her home, having planet-sized love for those around her. My only lament is that at the end of the story she didn't go off to hunt aliens, which was her dream, but I like to think it's implied that she’ll in the near future.

( Kamui wants Kagura to grow, get stronger, always improve and find happiness
Gintoki and Umibozu have expressed not wanting her to grow up and to stay that cute little girl.
Its subtle but Kamui has shown everytime they've interacted, he wants her to get stronger or expresses how he thinks she's strong.
Yoshiwara arc: He tells Gintoki to make her stronger
Shogun Assassination arc: Tells Kagura to show him how strong she is
Battle on Rakuyo arc: Says he's tired of losing to her. Basically admitting she's strong.
Silver Soul Arc: Tells her to not be afraid of her Yato blood because he knows she's strong enough to control it.
He also trained her during the timeskip too. Which means he sees A LOT of potential in her since Kamui never seemed like the type to train others. Sure, he's an asshole but more than anyone he wants the best for her. He believes in her wholeheartedly. )

Gintama: Yato Siblings Flipnote
Aah... Kagura & Kamui, the most chaotic and similar to real life siblings imo (in their absolute annoyance with each other, and how they really cares underneath all that 🥹).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kagura turned out so adorable!
Kamui got a little bloody there (I was racking my head for inspirations).
Really loved how Kagura's main goal (& Kamui's as well) was family, Rakuyo is my most favorite arc in Gintama! How the battle ended between Kagura & Kamui was just beautiful! 🥹
All in all, glad Gintama's siblings isn't some crazy over-the-top sibling complex stuff found in a lot of anime (with romantic undertone for some reason 💀 Makes me want to gag).
Instead, they're adorable and chaotic! 😄

I also noticed this while watching and this post makes me cry tears of joy.
He really doesn't have a preference for his weapon of choice and doesn't relate to the physical matters. I think this stems from his early childhood, where he basically raised himself in the battlefield, most likely picking up any weapon he could use to fight and throw it away when useless. Although his past came up later in the series, I could tell that he was used to a variety of weapons bc in the final scene in the benizakura arc (the movie), he has a different weapon on his hand with each scene cut. First, it was the sword, next a spear, then daggers, and so on. To mark my point, he easily threw away his weapon and escapes with Zura. Other examples would be in the rakuyo battle where he challenges Kamui with a random sword he picked up to make up for the difference in strengths.
My point being, I think Gintoki isn't obsessed with his weapon because he IS the weapon. I don't remember which episode, but early in the series, Gintoki still went to fight when someone told him not to go after saying that his soul would break if he didn't, and its the one thing that matters most to him. We don't know it yet at this point, but I'm beginning to feel like that line really encapsulates all of Gintoki and the teachings Shouyo gave. There's a term in wuxia novels that describes a higher statis where the sword master is one with his sword, the sword him. Not going to say sorachi knew about this term cuz I don't, but the point is that Gintoki reminds me of this term. He is adaptable because he doesn't fight with his sword or fists or khakkhara. He fights with his soul and determination to not fail his teacher's last lesson. He executed his own parent(al figure). Yeah, he knows better than others that what killed you (in a metaphorical sense) is just as important as how you die.
not sure but a neat subversion I noticed is how Gintoki doesn't always rely on his wooden sword when it comes to climactic fights
like most characters have strong associations to their weapons:
kagura connected to the yato through her use of her umbrella
tsukuyo and her introductions usually involving her using her kunai
the Shinsengumi having two arcs (Shinsengumi crisis and Excalibur lol) regarding their swords
just off my top of my head. kinda like how most Shonen function where characters are strong attatchements to their weapon of choice
but gintoki's wooden sword not only is based on a fabricated story and easily replaceable -- subversion of how iconic weapons are used in most action stories -- it is not always used to deal the killing blow
take for example the benzikura arc where gintoki easily accepts tetsuko's weapon to deal the killing blow. I feel there are other examples that I can't think of off my head but it shows gintoki's adaptability and the story's overall theme of change :P
it shows gintoki's strength through the actions he chooses to make, not the weapon in his hand

Thoughts about Sakamoto
Tumblr media
The guy is known as the loud fellow in a series like Gintama, that says a lot. But beyond being eccentric, he’s known for his huge heart and his love for money the people. He’s like the heart of the Joui 4 group and his bond with them is emotional and inspiring. His optimistic attitude was the light in the dark times of war.
It's interesting to think that Gintoki, Takasugi and Katsura, a group so united (due to their past, their motivations) would let Tatsuma in. But possibly it wasn't that they let him in, but that he simply made his way and, without anyone noticing, he became part of the group and its dynamics. I think Sakamoto's kindness also helped and perhaps, in a way, he reminded them of their sensei.
Tatsuma's compassion extended not only to his companions, but also to his enemies, as demonstrated in the Rakuyo arc flashback. He didn't intend for his arm to be rendered useless, but he accepted it anyway, as did his friends. Everyone understood that his place wasn’t in the war (although he was very talented with the sword), but in other battles.
His true nature came out in Kaientai arc, in which he meets Mutsu. Here he not only manages to change her, but he also manages to free all the slaves from human trafficking, becoming part of his crew and stealing the criminals’ ships. His ability to change people for the better is also demonstrated with Nobu Nobu later on.
Tumblr media
However, it should be noted that Sakamoto is one of the least developed characters of the main cast. The little information there was about him was always scattered in different arcs in which he wasn’t the focus (even the Kaientai arc was more about Mutsu). We never saw why he learned swordsmanship or how was the internal process of him becoming disabled (if he wanted he could’ve used his other arm, implying he decided not to).
In both Rakuyo arc and Silver Soul arc he was involved in very similar situations, having to be saved in both cases by Mutsu (and whether we like it or not, that makes him look less capable). He never had any real opportunities to shine, and I feel like his character was only superficially explored, when he’d a lot to give. His only role at the end was to improve Nobu Nobu as a person, which was somewhat useless because he died shortly after.
I think Tatsuma would’ve been the perfect character to develop the sci-fi aspect of Gintama, in the sense of exploring other planets and the alien life that exists on them. He could’ve given odd jobs to the Yorozuya (bad um tsss) and thus justify the alien missions, taking advantage of the space travel in the series and, perhaps, giving more development to the Liberation Army, the Harusame and the Tendoushuu from the start.
