Why is a Baseball Bat Cupped?
Tumblr media
Some baseball bats are cupped to create slight variations and feel from one model to the next such as changing the balance of the bat due to some of the weight being taken off the end. Not every baseball bat is cupped on the end, however many of them are. As a player develops their skills they will seek to find a particular bat weight, length, and “feel” they prefer which will vary from player to player.
Generally speaking, a cupped bat will be made from a more dense piece of wood, so rather than increasing the weight of the bat and potentially slowing down a players bat speed, they are able to use this stronger piece of wood but maintain proper weight. All things considered equal, a heavier piece of wood will increase bat density, strength, durability, and pop.
Cupping a bat can also have an effect on if the bat is more end loaded or handle loaded. Neither one is better nor worse than the other. A player should experiment with using different makes and models to see what they prefer. When a player gets highly attune with his or her swing and their preference of bat feel, they can develop the ability to simply hold the bat to determine if they like it or not. Other players, especially those with less experience, may need to swing the bat in a cage or off of a tee several times to determine their preference.

The Key To Awesome Baseball Hitting Drills
Lots of coaches and the like offer hitting lessons to aspiring young baseball players, and parents are quick to enroll their students. I should know... I was one of them.
But if a student is only as good as his master, it would benefit us greatly to be careful in selecting a hitting coach.
When my daughter, who plays HS softball, was 10, we signed her up for some hitting drills with a local coach. I was a decent ball player through High School, but I didn’t know the difference between a good swing and a bad one. Well... I knew that a bad one missed the ball or never made solid contact, but I couldn’t tell you why.
The point is that I didn’t realize that the things this coach was teaching my little girl were not actually the best techniques and drills...
...until I med Rod!
Rod is a former MLB player with the KC Royals and has a few World Series rings. He’s also a scout for that organization, and he happens to live in my neck of the woods.
Despite being 3x the cost of her previous instructor, I signed my girl up for lessons with Rod. That’s when I learned just how much I didn’t know.
Rod helped my daughter make a few adjustments to her swing by performing some repetitive drills, and pretty soon she was consistently destroying the ball at just about every at-bat!
The key to awesome baseball or softball hitting drills is to learn from someone with proven results. Anybody can look up some YouTube techniques and call himself a hitting coach. What you (or your child) need is a master hitter who’s willing to teach.
I know some people live in parts of the country where these local “home-grown coaches” seem to be your only option, but proven hitting drills ARE within reach if you know where to look.
If you’re serious about getting into a D-1 baseball or softball program or even playing at the professional level, do yourself a favor. Learn from a pro. Take it from a man who knows.

Pedro Strop knows the score: He'll have a tough time accessing his locker at Wrigley Field often. Baez has often been compared to Gary Sheffield for the lightning-quick batspeed, but the guy Joe Maddon keeps comparing Baez to is actually Manny Ramirez. via Pocket

Batting Donut: Baseball Terminology
Batting Donut: Baseball Terminology #Baseball #MLB #BatSpeed #BigStick
A batting donut is something that is surprisingly simple as a kid and gets more complicated the older you get. The donut is a weight that hitters use while waiting on deck for their turn to hit. It allows the hitter to use a heavier bat to produce quicker bat speed in the game.
Why is it called a batting donut? It looks like an actual donut – at least the basic and simple variety. It is a round…
