9th week at Semewah.
(25 September - 29 September)
This week has been quite eventful for me in my role as a teacher. It's my turn to lead the weekly HIP (High-Intensity Program) session, and this time, I've been tasked with creating a captivating poster for our 'Word of the Week.' The word I've chosen is 'bizarre,' and after crafting the poster, I'll be sharing it with my fellow English teachers and distributing it to their respective class groups.
On Tuesday, I took on the responsibility of being the teacher on duty, which meant supervising the students at Anjung Siaga before the afternoon session commenced.
Today, I couldn't conduct lesson with 2 Aura, as they were actively engaged in an Anti-Bullying Program led by the PDRM. I had to be with my students in the hall, ensuring their safety and well-being until my designated class time was over.
Wednesday marked a special occasion at my school as we celebrated Hari Koperasi 2023. This day was filled with excitement as our students set up stalls. These are including bracelets, burgers, takoyaki, and much more.
I had to monitor the canteen during the recess as I was one of the teachers on duty this week.
As the week drew to a close on Friday, we, the teaching staff, organized a heartfelt farewell party for two practicum teachers who were completing their teaching assignments with us. It was a touching event. Wish you the best Tasya & Batrisya.
(I enjoyed the food I got from the party it was delicious! Hehe.)

Reflections on the first day of Football and Fitness activity at SK Taman Medan
Writer: Celine Woon
This program has indeed open my view on the challenges faced by special needs children in our society. Previously, I was not aware of the plights of these children and have low understanding about disabilities. However, upon being a part of this program, I was really able to comprehend on the situation that not only the special children faced but also their parents in a Malaysian society which does not focuses much on the needs of children who require special care. Prior to this program, I had mixed feelings about facing them as I was afraid I was not able to interact with them and due to their physical disabilities, I felt they were very fragile. I was wrong. These kids were in fact really normal and they have capabilities similar to what a normal child could achieve! I was ashamed that I had such prejudice towards them and this program indeed baffled me. In terms of expectations, I was expecting to be facing troubles in organising the football activity because I have not conducted any physical activities with children, especially those with special needs. Moreover, my team and I were not really skilful in playing football and we were afraid we might let them down. And I was wrong again. The children love to be outside and were happily playing on the field. They were also really supportive towards us. This made me felt somehow glad because there are still children who like playing outside and are not glued to their electronic devices. I have seen many able-bodied and normal children refusing to be under the sunlight and prefer to coop at one corner, staring at the screens of their smartphones. I learnt that we must play our roles responsibly in building a community which benefits everyone from all walks of life. The presence of these special children are a reminder to us that we should not underestimate the power of humanity.
Writer : Hani Batrisya Binti Nor Azman
Truth be told, I was very nervous about meeting the children at SK Taman Medan. I am generally not comfortable nor exceptionally friendly with children, let alone those who are disabled, be it mentally or physically. So, I was pleasantly surprised that the children are generally well-behaved, despite being told by the teachers that the majority of the students are children with ADHD. Another concern of mine before we departed for the school was whether would there be any physically disabled children participating and whether we are able to accommodate them, seeing that my teammates and I are not experienced in matters of caring for the disabled. Undeniably, I felt that not only did we lacked planning, but most importantly is the fact that we were so ignorant, or rather not well-versed in matters of dealing with children with disabilities. I expected hardship and struggle in containing or having the children to listen to our instructions because we were often told, or rather a common misconception that I believed, was that these children, especially those who are autistic are difficult to handle. Of this, clearly, I am wrong. The children were anything but difficult; yes, I did find that some of them were rather slow on the uptake when it comes to instructions, but what is more important is that they were happy to run around the field with their fellow classmates. Sometimes maybe we shouldn’t be too uptight on rules and instructions and having these children to conform, but rather to just let them play about. What I’ve gained last week, besides the experience of having to play alongside these children is to just let them be; and to listen. Listen to what they have to say for themselves, because for all we know their ideas might seem simple and insignificant at the time but it is an idea that we might not have considered.
Writer: Safwah binti Abdul Razak
On the 13th of April, Austen’s Pride Jalinan Masyarakat project (Challenges Buddy Programme) had conducted their first session of Football and Fitness programme for special needs students at SK Taman Medan. My name is Safwah Binti Abdul Razak and I am one of the members for the Football and Fitness programme.
Before the programme had started, I had a lot of mixed emotions. I felt scared and anxious as I had to teach special needs children to play football. What if they did not follow my instructions? Moreover, I am not very good at handling children. On the other hand, I felt excited and happy that I am going out of my comfort zone as I had never handled a programme with primary school kids. I also had some negative expectations in my mind. I thought that maybe they would throw tantrums and be difficult to handle since they are special needs children. Maybe it would be impossible to teach them basic instructions such as kicking or aiming. Furthermore, I did not know how severe their respective disabilities are. Such expectations lingered in my thoughts. I didn’t really have many misconceptions about special needs children, though. One of my younger brothers has autism. Accompanying him to his speech therapy classes has taught me a lot about how autism has different levels of severity. Nevertheless, I do not really have that much experience with physically disabled children. I thought it would be quite impossible to teach them how to play football.
During the programme, my worries and anxiety dissipated. I had a lot of fun teaching them how to kick and aim. Even though I felt very tired, it was rewarding to see how the kids have improved their skills in playing football. The children there were mostly high-functioning and it wasn’t too difficult to teach them basic football skills. They were also very cooperative and well-behaved. There were times when the kids got distracted and ran off on their own but it did not happen frequently. There were kids who had difficulty using their foot to kick the ball. However, they kept on trying and did not give up. Their resilience showed me that their flaws did not stop them from doing physical activities.
In conclusion, being in this programme has taught me a lot about special needs children. My perception of them has changed into a more positive light and my misconceptions about them had cleared up. They deserve the same opportunities that other children have. I hope more programmes that empower disabled people are held by governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Nur Adriana Batrisya Mohamad Sharom hopes to someday represent Malaysia doing what she loves most – running.
The 12-year-old girl trains every day, and her coach is her father, Mohamad Sharom Ishak, who is also her number one fan.
“I fell in love with running after competing in my first race at school when I was six. I love the feeling I get when I run. I also love competing and these days, I love sprints. I want to improve my performance so that I have a podium finish.
“Of course there are days when I feel lazy to train, especially if I come back from school late but I know that if I want to get better, I have to train,” said Nur Adriana after a training session with running coach Ben Pulham at the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) Junior Running Clinic in Kuala Lumpur recently.
The Year Six pupil will be among the 1,000 children participating in the Kids Dash event in conjunction with the upcoming KLSCM.
The clinics, says Mohamad Sharom, are a great opportunity for Nur Adriana to train under a professional coach.
Nur Adriana hopes to improve her running technique and her speed in the KLSCM clinics with Pulham.
“She loves running and I often go online to research drills and training programmes for her. But this was a great chance to get some professional coaching tips from a professional athlete. She has the talent so I see it as my duty to try and nurture that interest and ability. It takes quite a lot of sacrifice for her and for us, too, as parents but if it’s important to her, we don’t mind it,” says Mohamad Sharom, 36, who is an amateur runner himself.
The Kids Dash has been a staple of KLSCM and is open to children between the ages of six and 13. The younger children (six to 10) take part in the 1km run while the older ones run the 3km.
The aim is to encourage children to take part in sports activities like running and, this year, race organiser Dirigo Events has decided to include more participants in the Kids Dash.
“We have expanded the numbers for both categories from a total of 500 in previous years to 1,000 this year. “The take-up was extremely encouraging and in fact, the race entries for the kids’ categories were balloted, similar to the adult categories.
They ended up being fully subscribed,” says Rainer Biemans, project director of the KLSCM.
The event will take place a day before the actual marathon, so that the children will get to have their own “race day” as opposed to just being part of a supplementary race for adults.
The Kids Dash has been a staple of the KLSCM for many years. Photo: Filepic
Explains Biemans: ”Starting last year, we arranged the Kids Dash categories a day before, making the race a two-day event. This was intended to give more limelight to the kids’ categories by staging their event at Dataran Merdeka and getting them to start at the Start/Finish race arch. Previously, the kids’ categories ran on the same day as the main events and had to be held at a separate location.
“We have also introduced ‘speed’ categories for both the 1km and 3km runs to separate the competitive runners from the kids who are participating for fun.
“While we want to encourage children to take up running and to show that the fun element is important, we also want to encourage them to get used to competitive situations.”
The best way to get children interested in training is to make it fun.
At the running clinic, children from as young as six were made to do drills and relays aimed at improving their basic running skills.
“The most important thing about training children is to keep things fun. I grew up in New Zealand where fun was the core behind any sports training programme for children. If you make it fun, they will want to do it and the more they do it, the better they will become and then they will have some success in their runs. And once they experience that success, they will want to run more – that’s when the real training kicks in,” says Pulham, who is based in Singapore.
Pulham was an elite triathlete who has represented New Zealand in international triathlons before becoming a professional coach.
Teaching children to run, he reckons, is important because running is the fundamental component in many different sports.
“Even if they don’t want to become runners, you have to be a runner if you want to play football, basketball, hockey and lots of other sports. Running drills are really important because they not only teach you to run better but also reduce the likelihood of injuries,” he explains.
Unfortunately, Pulham says, the most amateur runners fail to incorporate drills into their training.
“Professional runners do a lot of running drills. But amateur runners tend to focus on distance more than drills maybe because drills look a little silly.
“But drills are crucial; 79% of (amateur) runners get injured each year and that’s a massive number. This is mostly because they don’t do enough supplementary training work like drills,” says Pulham who has also been conducting clinics for adults in conjunction with KLSCM that’s happening on Sept 29.
