Steph tried to hide her firebending from her father, but when that didn't work lied and pretended she was a weak bender so he wouldn't try to use her in his schemes or push her into illegal activities. learned to fight by taking part in illegal bending matches to make money when her dad was in jail.

Cass wasn't taught any bending except bloodbending. after she escaped david cain her waterbending was learned from beaches and tides, and used instinctively. Babs was her first true waterbending teacher, but over time realised that Cass didnt need to follow the forms perfectly in order to be a bender.

Like. Dick and Tim are both airbenders. Jason and Steph are firebenders. Cass and Babs can waterbend. Bruce is an earthbender. and whilst damian is completely capable of holding his own in combat against a bender, even a bending master, he Can't Bend. it doesn't matter how much he trains or how strong he becomes, its something that will be forever out of his reach.

Alfred can't bend either, but in damian's initial view of family structure he's a servant rather than a family member. on the plus side it gives the two of them something to bond over and, eventually, a way for damian to realise he Does have a place in the family that doesn't rely solely on his vigilante abilities. that he has so much worth, and skills as a nonbender that his bending siblings and comrades will never have either.
