The Batagaika Crater, located in the Chersky Range of northeastern Siberia, Russia, is the largest permafrost crater in the world. One kilometer (0.6 miles) long, 100 meters (328 feet) deep, and growing, it has been sinking due to thawing permafrost since the 1960s. Batagaika’s rim is extremely unstable and the site of regular landslides, retreating by as much as 30 meters (98 feet) in a single year.

Named: " The Siberian Doorway to the Underworld" AKA "The Batagay Megaslump" AKA the "Batagaika Crater".
The permafrost in Siberia’s Yana Highland is melting causing a crater to form. Permafrost is ice under the ground that keeps a layer of dirt up.
The rate of melting is increasing with global warming. And may continue until the crater hits bedrock.
The Batagay River which receives water from the snow melt will be affected. And unfrozen sediments and nutrients will be released causing green house gasses to be released.

The preserved remains of a juvenile mammoth are being studied by scientists after it was discovered in thawing permafrost after more than 50,000 years.The creature was recovered from the Batagaika crater in Russia, a huge depression more than 80m (260ft) deep which is widening as a result of climate change. The carcass, weighing more than 110kg (240lb), was brought to the surface on an improvised stretcher, according to Maxim Cherpasov, head of the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory in the city of Yakutsk. Image: Researchers Gavril Novgorodov and Erel Struchkov. Pic: Gavril Novgorodov via Reuters He said the mammoth was probably a little over a year old when it died, but tests would enable the scientists to confirm this more accurately.The fact that its head and trunk had survived was particularly unusual. "As a rule, the part that thaws out first, especially the trunk, is often eaten by modern predators or birds," Mr Cherpasov said. Image: Pic: Reuters/Roman Kutukov "Here, for example, even though the forelimbs have already been eaten, the head is remarkably well preserved." It is the latest of a series of spectacular discoveries in the Russian permafrost. Last month, scientists in the same vast northeastern region - known as Sakha or Yakutia - showed off the 32,000-year-old remains of a tiny sabre-toothed cat cub. And earlier this year a 44,000-year-old wolf carcass was uncovered. atOptions = 'key' : '6c396458fda3ada2fbfcbb375349ce34', 'format' : 'iframe', 'height' : 60, 'width' : 468, 'params' : ;

Scientists unveil 50,000-year-old baby mammoth carcass | masr356.com
Yana was found in the Batagaika crater, the world’s largest permafrost (ground that is permanently frozen) crater, by people living nearby. The residents “were in the right place at the right time”, the head of the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory said. “They saw that the mammoth had almost completely thawed out” and decided to build a make-shift stretcher to lift the mammoth to the surface,…

Siberia’s ‘Gateway to Hell’ is rapidly expanding in size, scientists discover
New York Post By Andrew CourtPublished June 7, 2024, 11:33 a.m. ET A crater in Siberia is expanding faster than anticipated due to climate change, scientists have discovered, saying it now poses problems for the surrounding habitat. The Batagaika slump, known as the “Gateway to Hell” and located in the freezing Yana Highlands, currently covers about 200 acres of land and can be seen in satellite…
