bringing to the surface "platonic" sbi again, this kind of thinking probably is from my black-and-white dsmp fandom ways but, is it okay then to like dark sbi content? i have never liked anything RPF and dsmp is such a blurry line since the fandom had tried to make cc and c two completely different things, when honestly they're too connected to differentiate. take wilbur, a lot of people straight-up dropped the whole sbi thing because for the life of them couldn't separate the art from the authour, and honestly, me either. though it has gotten easier through the months with the special ability of just ignoring reality.
it's probably a little hard for you to sympathize since you've mentioned that you don't really like sbi fics in general, because at the end of the day it has become a thing of it's own, barely following the people it was based on. which is so so weird and i wonder if i'll ever feel weird about it too, or if i'll be a prisoner of the nostalgia and gooey feelings it gave me as a teen.
would really appreciate your perspective!
First off I will address the biglong ask that I got alongside this one, which made me a little teary-eyed because it caught me on an interesting day and I really appreciated the nostalgia trip. Thank you 😭.
I tend to have a look at the impact that it’s having on the person who’s doing the reading, putting aside the production since it already exists from their POV. I’ll go partly off what you said in your longer message and say that you’re coming from a place of pretty solid self-awareness now, which can make a difference in terms of the way people go about things. When people put meanings into RPF and then keep going back to one dynamic or one story style without knowing why, they kinda put themselves at risk of not being able to move on / overinvesting in the dynamic, which it seems like you’re not doing. You have a half-roadmap for where to go when you want to move on which I think makes a difference.
The thing is, you are an ageing person, and c!Tommy is notoriously not. Time is going to be a deciding factor in terms of going back to SBI content for a certain kind of emotional kickback. I actually think it will be natural for things to lose their charge as you move on to new and different stuff, so don’t worry too-too much. There’s still a lot of media out there and I know it can seem un-promising if you’re a person who likes to come at things with a hyperfixation-ish edge, but the thing about brains built like that is when they switch over they switch over fast. You deserve an era that exists beyond lockdown nostalgia, even though I do get feeling attached to the deeply heightened feelings that Peak DSMP brought on.
