Culture shock and the internet

I’d like to talk a bit on the nature of culture shock, and how it works on a mechanical level in our brains. Some people who tend not to ever leave their country or region don’t necessarily think about what it’s like to live in another country, and explaining the nuances of how another countries culture works would take an age, so instead i'm going to use the internet as the example, a place we’ve all migrated to sooner or later.

I’ll leave a link to a video here, put it on in the background while you read this, or better yet, on a second monitor/phone. That way you can see and understand what it is I'm explaining as I explain it.

This video is technically funny, but also a full on vibe, it’s a bit of an old meme but that doesn't make it any less of a banger song. First it’s based on the song gangsters paradise, that a stranger with minimal contact to the internet might know by heart, so it’s a strong start, but that's where the simple ends.

Vocoding is the process of taking the audio for one thing and compressing it against another signal, this can lead to unexpected and fun artifacting that in this case is used to turn beatboxing into a more melodic format. Vocoding in this way is uncommon at best outside of the internet, but still possible.

The beatboxing used is Verbalaces thanos beatbox, the movie itself is common outside of the internet but the beatbox is wholly original and exists only on the internet. All of these levels combined make the audio portion of the video and that alone is a lot of information to have to explain to a “foreigner” to the internet.

If someone with limited or no understanding of the internet were to hear this, they’d simply think it was a worse version of the song they’ve heard, not understanding the potential enjoyment or comedy of the song, and this is only the beginning.

The video is RTX Morshu with a funny filter over it. RTX, in the modern age of the internet, is used when a common or simply modelled thing becomes suddenly more complex and well animated. It’s a bastardisation of the RTX branding used to describe a particularly powerful line of graphics cards used to produce complex lighting.

Morshu is a character from an old and obscure legend of zelda game that people who make jokes on the internet decided could be made to do and say funny things, it followed naturally that someone would have him sing/beatbox.

Bringing all the elements together we have the totality of the video, stretched to 1 hour in respect for the old 1 hour challenges from the early days of internet funnies. Now that you have full context, consider what a tourist sees.

A 1 hour video of a random fat guy making incomprehensible sounds in the tune of gangsters paradise. It makes no sense, yet most of the people who saw the video understood innately. Culture shock isn’t the shock of realising everything is different in another region, it’s the check that those differences have meaning.

Culture shock is realising that the little details of your life are arbitrary, and that if you’d lived somewhere else you’d be a totally different person, it’s realising that these strangers from a distant land are just as deep and complex as you and your friends are.

My most memorable moment of culture shock was on a visit to japan, I sat in the common area of my hotel looking out the windows at a massive billboard of a naked woman trying to work out what product they were selling that could possibly warrant such an advert.

Then it struck me that it was an advert for the mall across the road, the advert wasn’t special, it was common, this was simply how such businesses marketed themselves, and i realised that in the UK a billboard like that could only be used for certain products and services. I realised how arbitrary it all was.

Culture shock is ultimately subjective, and you’ll never experience it until you travel and experience it, but I hope I've given some small insight to those who’ve never travelled.

Ok let’s go I’m ready to ramble about literally all of these 3,2,1 go

1; Funny story actually. I had left the fnaf fandom a little bit before Help Wanted came out and had been long since burnt out on fnaf after hyperfixating on it since fnaf 4s trailer dropped. So I had little to no idea wtf was happening at the time and one of the YouTubers I watched posted an animation of the Freddy beatboxing meme with GR Fred and Sun screaming at the end (Seeks Animation And Stuff if you were wondering). Had zero clue who they were at the time and kind of just brushed it off with only mild curiosity on who this weird sun faced dude was, forgot about it soon after. THEN more SB gameplay gets recommended to me on YouTube and I’m faced with the reality of “wait that guy was in the game???” Leading me to start getting into it all, find out more about security breach, Moonman enters my life, hyperfixation quickly ensues and now I’m here!

6: Gosh, when it comes to this fandom it’s genuinely hard to pick. It’s a HARD tie between horror and romance. DCA writers have a knack for writing the most out-there crackships into a masterpiece and, as a multi shipper, I end up consuming a lot of those fics very frequently. But also my initial love for Moon in particular was how well he contrasted Sun and their attempts at friendliness, so to get some horror content based on his actions, ESPECIALLY from Sunny’s perspective, never fails to disappoint.

7: Oh without a doubt ‘Like Clockwork’ by Gallexy Cat. It is such a good read and one of the only Y/n fics I’ve ever been able to get invested in (No offense to all the writers in this fandom who do x Reader and the like ofc y’all are great) I definitely recommend it to anyone reading this!

9: They are so fucking ugly in the best way possible. It’s such a nice contrast between the decals and the actual models, the posters set up such expectations and I feel like all the inconsistencies between the two versions perfectly encapsulates how Fazbear treats its robots. Sun & Moon are so unkept and nasty they SCREAM neglect more then anything else and it makes me want to vomit and then give them a little pat on the head and make them my scroingly doinglys. And I think it’s that uglyness that allows such creativity and freedom in redesigns and interpretations from the fandom! If they looked more appealing in game, we wouldn’t be as inclined to completely rework them from the ground up like we do now. Aka, absolutely hideous, disgusting, god awful and uncanny /pos

10: Mainly autism, but also because they’re insanely fun to draw and are personally intertwined with my artstyle in a way that leads me to always come back to them when I drop out of a hyperfixation/fandom. They’re like those old worn out toys that you always say you’re going to sell or give away or put in storage but every time you open up the moving box and see them at the top of all your stuff you just feel the need to snuggle with them and play with them for what you always say will be the final time, if that makes any sense.

11: Hooooboy, character design wise? Moon, 1000% Moon. But as a *character* I’d have to go with Sun, since I don’t think that Moon is much of a character without Sun in tow when boiled down. As much as I love my unhinged nightlight spider I’ll be picking Sunny on this one, way more writing potential and stuff to experiment with even without their counterpart and…. In game predicament.

12: They are…. Not what I expected to say the least. Not in a bad way though! As I imagine most of the fandom does, I have a lot of thoughts about them. They make no sense and they logically shouldn’t exist in the ways they do but at the same time they’re my father now and there’s nothing you can do to pry them away from me. So many ways to interpret them, so many questions, so much angst potential- are they a Steven universe fusion between the two? A factory reboot for a daycare ai while Sun and Moon are still the theater personalities? Something entirely different and an entire new person that just isn’t mentioned in the base game???? Are they the original attendant and Sun and Moon are the branch offs or is it the other way around? Are they in denial? Are they stupid? Are Sun and Moon still alive or was the ‘Thank you’ their last words? What is going on??? Idk but I love it because all I’m seeing is a soft spoken little creature who deserves better and they can do no wrong and you’re crazy if you think otherwise, your honor.

13: Getting into big headcannon territory with this one, but I am under the strong belief that the virus simply turns up the flaws of the bots AIs to a hundred and seeing what happens. I feel like Pre-glitch Sunny was much more akin to their fannon interpretation, happy go lucky, childish, playful, albeit with quite awful self esteem and anxiety and maaaybeee just a teeeny weeeny bit of a pushover turned people pleaser by circumstance.

14: Soft Moon truther stepping up to the stand rn. In my opinion PG Moon was more or less the same as Security Breach Moon, though significantly toned down. He was pleasant, soft spoken like Eclipse, much more emotionally stable than Sunny, but definitely a prankster at heart and unwilling to put up with the staffs BS. He probably had a bit of a temper, leading to his bad reputation amongst the employees and ultimately being the patient zero of the virus, but while in a good mood he’d just do a little mischief after hours with nothing too harmful, just annoying at worse while he kicks his feet up into the air and laughs until he’s out of breath while you glare at him and wait for him to calm down. I believe that in Ruin he’s simply just angry because of how long he was kept out of control and wants to get back at Sun for it, unaware of their reasons and unwilling to listen because of the genuine, pent up rage from being trapped for so long.

15: I’m privy to both interpretations honestly! Though I very much lean towards them being entirely separate beings that just so happen to share a body and try to make the most of it, but with Eclipse factored into the conversation the idea of them being two wayward halves of one lost identity has been getting more and more appealing the more I’m exposed to it. And no, at the end of the day I don’t really think it matters.

16: More exploration of how Sun and Moons relationship and personality’s got to where it is now. What were they like at the beginning? Did they always hate each other? Did they use to be separate people? Why were they combined? How did everything go down after they were infected? What events took place in between Cassy’s memories of having such nice, good times in the daycare and the unstable nightmare of Ruin and Security breach? There’s a lot of potential for that and I don’t think people consider it enough!

17: Reader insert content honestly, it’s fine in doses but it does get kind of tiring after awhile. Especially for someone like me who’s never been much of a fan of that kind of content. Once again no offense to anyone who makes that content /gen

My main boi, Beatbox, got a design update.

To commemorate this, here's a miscellaneous few fun facts about him, all of which are 100% Canon.

Beatbox is the 77 Universe equivalent to the Sentient Ultimate Echo Echo seen in "The Ultimate Sacrifice". However, he has a MUCH different backstory, the full tale of which can be read here.

An early concept for Beatbox's Backstory involved him being an artificial creation of the Sigmatrix, akin to Ben Prime's Nanomech, with Sigma, the Sigmatrix's A.I., acting as his surrogate mother. This was eventually scrapped in favor of his current backstory that uses 5 Years Later elements for the planet of Sonorosia, the species inhabiting the planet, the planet's geography and the culture of both the Sonorosians and the Sanavox.

According to an off-handed remark from Professor Paradox, Beatbox, in terms of strength, scales 1:1 with a fellow alien from a different Omnitrix named Warhead, a Prypiatosian-A/Prypiatosian-B Hybrid. This is important, as Warhead is said to, and I quote; "violate the Geneva Convention every time he breathes" and "make even the wisest Celestialsapien quake in their cosmic boots". It may have been just a joke, but if Paradox was being serious, this means Beatbox is at least capable of Low 5-B: Small Planet Level feats or higher.

Beatbox is the first recorded alien of any Omnitrix to wear a Lantern Corp Ring on his own without the intervention or interference of the current wielder of said Omnitrix. Beatbox's Lantern Ring is Green, as due to his kind's nature and his own upbringing, he has a metric ton of willpower to spare, making him quite effective when using it. However, it doesn't see much action in general, and may end up being side-lined permanently at some point in the near future.

Beatbox's Birthday, in terms of an IRL Date, is December 30th 2018. As of this year, he will be 3 Years Old.

Beatbox's Theme Song is "AIN'T NOTHIN' LIKE A FUNKY BEAT" from Lethal League Blaze.

Beatbox is most often used as a walking MP3 Player when using his sound-based abilities instead of just throwing out white noise. He can be most often heard playing his theme song, meme songs or any form of background music that fits a particular situation, even if he's not directly involved in a fight.

Thought not mentioned on his profile, Beatbox's Audiokinesis does carry a similar effect to that of a fellow alien from the same star system, Shredder, in that the music he plays can carry a variety of effects depending on specific melodies. While Shredder's music is more control and combat-orientated, Beatbox's music is more emotional and can boost or harm the morale and mental states of both allies and enemies alike. Basically, Shredder and Beatbox are both D&D Bards, just without the sexual tension.

Beatbox's voice sounds like Spongebob Squarepants, but under heavy Autotune.

Beatbox's voice sounding like Spongebob is relevant because, at one point, Beatbox also happened to create a poorly drawn evil duplicate of himself named Doodlebox. However, unlike Doodlebob, Doodlebox still remains at large and hasn't been seen since the original encounter, where he was erased, save for his left arm.

Beatbox has a variety of alternate forms, most of which can be accessed by various Super Mario Bros. Power Ups. His most frequently used ones are Metal Beatbox (accessed via the Metal Cap) and Fire Beatbox (accessed via Fire Flower).

Beatbox can also be modified and enhanced by other Power Ups from other series, such as the Magenta Rhythm Wisps from Sonic Colors.

One time, Beatbox took a vacation to a popular tourist destination known as Vinyl City, where everything revolved around music. Suffice to say, he was in paradise the whole time.

memes, and the role of music

Yeah, you heard me right. I'm gonna be talking about memes. Lately, I've been thinking about how much music has become intertwined with meme culture, and how certain songs can become memes on their own. Given that I write a music blog, I thought I'd write about my thoughts on the subject. How DOES music reach meme status?

Well first, we have to define what a meme even is. Obviously it's not just an image edited with a funny caption in Impact font or oversaturated to the point at which it's incomprehensible. Music has to be involved somewhere in there, or else this whole argument falls to pieces. There has to be a broader definition somewhere, right? Yes, there is, and it gives us a perfect grounding for establishing the meme status of music. According to Wikipedia, the term "meme" was coined in Richard Dawkin's book The Selfish Gene, and it defines the word as a cultural entity that can be considered a replicator; basically an idea that can be spread by people copying it and showing it to others, and it can include images, melodies, behaviors, and anything else that can easily be transmitted.

So why does this matter? We can now devise a way to categorize music memes based on what aspect of culture they appeal to. I won't go into every single meme song that exists, but I will go over some of the biggest meme songs in the past couple of years, and there are four main categories that all of them fall into:

Songs that have some sort of cultural significance on their own

Songs relating to shared cultural experiences

Songs that serve as part of a meme, without which the meme potential is lost

Remixes, typically of a sound that has cultural significance

For songs with their own cultural significance, we need look no further that January 2021 with the sea shanty craze; specifically, "The Wellerman". It's a perfect example of how social media has become embedded in musical culture and how sites like TikTok can bring people together through features that allow collaboration. Adam Neely made an in-depth video on this, but the gist of it was that the duet feature in TikTok allows people to come together with collaborative projects like singing sea shanties in a time when we're forced to stay apart. There are other songs that became memes through similar means. "Gangnam Style", "The Cha Cha Slide", and "The Cupid Shuffle" all became popular to the point of memes because they went viral on social media (mainly YouTube) and they were participatory in the sense they had signature dances, which were easy enough for anyone to do, solidifying them into a widespread culture. Some songs are memes due to their established presence in this culture, and they're songs people are expected to know either within a certain group or just in general. Just think "September", "Mamma Mia", and even "Renai Circulation" all became memes simply because of their existence within modern culture.

Culture also follows songs that are entertaining, i.e. funny, and funny songs are part of the epitome of meme culture. These come from the very early days of YouTube all the way to some of the newest TikTok audios. Take the keyboard cat on YouTube for example. Who doesn't love a cat in a suit playing some funky tunes on a keyboard? And Nyan Cat; an upbeat tune made out of synthesized meows while a cat with a PopTart for a body flies through space while farting rainbows. These random gems reflect the spirit of the internet in terms of creativity and just pure fun. There are also songs that are almost like musical shitposts; songs that have almost no meaning but exist for the sole purpose of entertainment through the random. Big Shaq's "Mans Not Hot" is such a fun song, and was really popular a few years ago because of its random lyrics and especially the verse that was just beatboxing. Songs that are so bad they're funny are popping up a lot as well. "Gucci Gang", sporting a laughably terrible sounding beat and 99% of the lyrics just being "Gucci Gang", climbed its way up to meme status just because of how bad it was. The meme status of these songs depends on the hilarity and ridiculousness that internet memes were founded on, and because of that, have embedded themselves into the worldwide meme culture.

Next is songs that relate to shared cultural experiences, so basically all of the movie tunes, game soundtracks, and just other experiences that aren't inherently musical, but contain musical elements. Everyone loves Smash Mouth's "All Star", and was popularized through none other than the hit movie Shrek. On its own it's a great song, but it's unlikely it would have reached the fame it has today had it not been for Shrek, which in and of itself has become a meme. Of course, the other one that everyone knows is "Megalovania" from the game Undertale. Its simple musical motifs combined to make it the insanely recognizable tune it is today, and has almost detached itself from its source entirely. Mario Kart has had several songs that have become memes, including "Coconut Mall" as well as "Dolphin Shoals", which gave birth to the famous Mario Kart Lick. And who could forget about Star Wars with its main theme, "The Imperial March", and "Duel of the Fates" among others. Lazy Town gave us a few gems as well, like "Cooking by the Book" and of course "We Are Number One". Most of these reach meme status because there are simple musical elements that make them instantly recognizable and can trigger pleasant memories of whatever media they came from, that media being a shared piece of culture among the majority of a generation. "All Star" begins that iconic leap from the the root to the fifth of the scale on the opening line, and "Coconut Mall" creates that frenzied feeling like entering a Macy's on Black Friday which just makes it so fun to listen to.

I need to take a minute to comment on the songs in this category that arguably had the biggest impact on the culture of this generation: Minecraft Parodies. Simply say "Creeper" in a room full of high schoolers and I guarantee you it will be followed by a chorus of "Aww man", most likely followed by the rest of the song. You probably already know what song I'm talking about. "Revenge" by CaptainSparklez and Tryhardninja was the song that powered a generation of Minecrafters, and its resurgence in recent years was met with a flash flood of nostalgia and overall good vibes. We had other hits that grew to immense popularity, like "Fallen Kingdom" and "TNT", along with countless others (and I really do mean countless). The parody craze was so prevalent, some people who otherwise probably never would have gotten into music began releasing hit songs. Not to mention all of the original Minecraft songs that came into the spotlight, like "Take Back the Night", "Creepers Gonna Creep", and so many others. This craze spread beyond Minecraft to some newer games like Fortnite, which allowed the creation of one of the most popular parodies today: Leviathan's "Chug Jug with You". Overall, these helped define a generation and not only allowed musicians to be involved in the things they like, but also allowed many people into the world of music.

This next category involves music that became associated with a certain format, as in there's little to no meme within the music outside of that format. The one everyone knows is the iconic Rickroll, the act of building suspense and breaking the tension with the beginning to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" rather than whatever else would logically release tension. Meme formats are tailored to the individual song, and this is no different. The song begins with a sudden electronic drum fill before going into an upbeat 80s dance tune. Often the video preceding the Rickroll will build up to something desirable to the viewer, and that sudden fill subverting their expectations invokes a sense of disappointment, having been cheated out of their reward. However, the fun sound of the rest of the song helps ease that disappointment. The Coffin Dance and Shot on iPhone memes employed a similar concept by building up tension and releasing it by cutting to the music. However, here the music played throughout to help build up that tension while a video, often depicting someone doing something risky or getting hurt in some way, cutting to just the music at the climax of the clip. This employs driving principle of EDM, building up tension and releasing it at the drop. The meme works by mirroring that suspense and resolution of the video with that of the song, and that resolution being different than what would otherwise logically happen is what allows the meme to spread. Obviously, this isn't the only way songs can be part of a format; songs like "Baka Mitai" and "Shooting Stars" have all had their time to shine. However, these memes that work to subvert the expectations of the audience arguably have the biggest impact of the songs in this category.

Finally, we have the remixes, which typically involve altering any of the songs from the above categories. One of the most popular forms of the remix is the mashup, and who better to bring up here than the legendary SilvaGunner, whose videos advertise a track from a video game OST, but end up being some other meme mashed up into it. The reason mashups work as memes is because it subverts our expectations, even when we know it's a mashup. Our brains know how each song goes, but when we listen to them together it creates something completely new that either sounds great or absolutely horrendous. Yet we still listen to them because they're interesting. Additionally, remixing a meme song in a funny way is a common form of musical meme. It can occur through, super heavy distortion, or repeating a section of a song throughout the song at a level far more than a mere motif, or deleting parts of a song leaving only the memeable parts, or simple pitch shifting, among so many other ways of remixing. The possibilities are endless. The reason remixes are such good memes is they take songs with cultural significance and change them entirely, giving them a whole new meaning.

Well there you have it. Music and memes have gone hand-in-hand since the very beginning, and as culture evolves and memes become more advanced, there's no doubt that these threads will entangle themselves even further. It depends on how solid my outline is. I was writing the next 3-4 chapters all in one doc, because I wasn't sure how I was going to group them together or even what order some of them would be in. I did create a final 'piq6' document a few days ago though, I do like having that all together and being able to see the whole thing. If I know exactly what's going into the next chapter I'll just write it in its own document.

The dual POVs thing also complicates shit, since I have to figure out the best way to alternate Gale and Leo's sections. Very often I'll just group all of Gale's scenes and then do a double page-break before Leo's scenes, and I'll figure out where Leo's scenes will go afterwards.

You should have seen me trying to sort through the original doth document, lol. I had all of Donnie's scenes written and then like half of Leo's, all in one big document. After like chapter 4 or something I knew I was going to need to figure out what was going where and set off on a massive reordering campaign. I think I had like eight different documents open to copy/paste text into, and three different highlighter colors on the master document denoting stuff that was placed, stuff that I placed and changed my mind on. Add to that there was an extra Donnie scene originally that I broke up and added to the others. The whole thing was just a fucking mess.

Oh, I also have a scraps document where I shove bits that I cut but didn't want to delete. And blurbs I want to use in the future and jotted down while the inspiration was with me. I think I have like three different documents for this right now, and nothing is labeled well. There has been one incident where I could never find the blurb I was looking for.

I'm hoping to get something out next week! Hopefully these long breaks will stop being so much of a thing, I've been working ahead a lot and we're getting into some stuff I've been really excited about.

Personal channels

Jared is the first to really be active on YT : he doesn’t have a big community until he starts streaming for eight hours straight ; he becomes unexpectedly popular.

his fanbase makes memes out of his ragequits or his ridiculous winning poses. 

He called his fans “children” one time and it stuck with them.

Every now and then he posts tutorials on how to fix tech junk, pretty much like that one guy he saw doing a big “FUCK U” to apple 

His channel’s name is TheInsanelyCoolJaredKleinman but it’s kind of a mouthful so the internet shortened it to TICJK. His intro is “*spinning chair* SUP FUCKERS THE INSANELY COOL JARED KLEINMAN HERE AND TODAY-”

Connor accidentally uploaded an unedited video and the algorithm pushes him in the front of the scene maybe six months after he posted it.

Most of his channel is just him sitting at his desk, often high, ranting about everything that is wrong in the world and how one can get better on a personal level.

His most popular vid is the one where he talks about beating depression and prevening suicide. He almost cries on camera.

His channel reeks of chaotic energy and people are here for it.

His channel’s name is murphyrules and his intro is “Okay so.”

Alana does pretty much the same thing as Connor, but in a more calm,  collected way. Her channel is all about feel-good activism.

A lot of her vids are recorded outside. She usually writes what she wants to say before she turns on her camera and checks multiple times that her arguments are fair and valid.

She’s very LGBTQ+ oriented and talks a lot about feminism and racism, and just equality in general.

Her fanbase is pretty small and chill, so she hosts a discord where her fans can talk together and reach out whenever they’re in need.

He channel’s name is just Alana Beck and her intro is generally a quote from someone probably famous followed by “Hello everyone, you’re in the good place.” She likes the Good Place.

Zoe starts later than the rest of the team, but really gets into it when she sees how much it helps Connor and wants to try it for herself.

She mostly posts covers of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald‘s songs, but occasionally makes book reviews.

She’s probably the least connected to her fans, because they aren’t all that numerous and barely comment, but she always gets an excellent ratio views/likes.

Her style is a little messy but everyone sees how much potential she has and is encouraging her to impose herself more.

Her channel’s name is Soul’s Pulse. She doesn’t have a real intro, but she fingerguns more often than not.

Evan didn’t plan to become a youtuber at first.

He’s mostly in the background of the other’s vids, like sometimes he’s listening to music in Jared’s room during a livestream, or how he sits on Connor’s bed when he decides to film anything, because he’s often high and Evan doesn’t want him to get hurt while setting up his stuff, or he goes on walks with Alana and holds the camera for her when she vlogs outside so she can have her hands free, or sometimes he and Zoe discuss about a particular line in a song or a book and try to understand why it works the way it works.

But one day Jared edits out twenty seconds out of one of his streams and it’s just Evan rapping at the speed of fast on Guns and Ships and the internet basically exploses.

He’s not sure at first, but then under the insistant demands on his instagram and twitter he finally makes his own channel : turns out he’s very good at beatboxing, rapping and singing acapella, so he mostly does that for a while, but then branches out a little and starts doing his own rant videos about ecology and mental health.

His channel’s name is Ev Rants and his intro is “Today is a good day and here’s why.”

Collabs

Jared is, as often in their group, the first to be asked to do official collabs with his friends, and not just Evan or Alana walking by in the background.

Jared & Connor sometimes play together online on random games, and eventually get kicked out of their respective teams because they keep targeting each other no matter what the main goal is. They often end teaming up and beating everyone else’s ass.

Jared & Alana play strategy board games. It usually take them a whole day to get through a single game because they keep trying to one-up each other with ridiculous yet very effective tactics.

Jared & Zoe collab very rarely on Jared’s channel, but there are one or two videos of Zoe describing very cool mods she found for Skyrim.

Jared & Evan don’t really collab, it’s more like Evan tags along at some point during livestreams and acts like an unhelpful second driver, trying to give Jared directions. It’s very frustrating for both of them but very funny for the public.

Connor never titles his videos as collabs, and his thumbnails are always a black screen with the title on it, so it’s generally a surprise whenever there is someone else on screen.

Connor & Jared made a short series of videos where Jared looks at stuff on the internet and Connor has to tell if it’s true or made up.

Connor & Alana team up on subjects like white/male privilege or capitalism and make a lot of historical researches to understand where it comes from and why it still exists.

Connor & Zoe’s collabs are the more frequent as they live under the same roof. It’s always less-than-a-minute videos recorded with a phone, where one of the siblings does something stupid or weird, like accidentally setting fire to a frying pan.

Connor & Evan are both present in most of Connor’s videos, but Evan doesn’t always speak up. When he does, it turns into a question-answers kind of game about a specific topic until they both know enough about it to write a whole thesis.

Alana puts all the tags possible on her collabs, because she wants to make sure everyone knows that, yes, she actually has friends in real life.

Alana & Jared once tried to host a DnD night with the gang, but ended fighting over technicalities of the main quest. It’s probably the longest video on her channel to this day.

Alana & Connor vlog together when she finds a way to lure him outside of his house. They go to museums where Alana plays the guide and Connor makes snarky comments about everything, but they overall enjoy themselves.

Alana & Zoe decided from the start that their collabs would never be heavy themed, so they do a lot of challenges - or at least the non-dangerous or stupid ones - and tags and asks videos.

Alana & Evan love to record their treks in the mountains or in the forest, because Evan has an impressive memory when it comes to trees and plants, and Alana is always eager to learn.

Zoe gets more important once the others include her in their videos, but there is always the idea that her subs are here for her and her only.

Zoe & Jared make vine compilations. That’s it, that’s all they do.

Zoe & Connor made one (1) cover together on a random song and for some reason it’s now a daily thing.

Zoe & Alana talk a lot about music theory when they are together. Sometimes they also do wholesome memes and satisfying sped-up videos of the two of them cleaning a whole room.

Zoe & Evan sing a lot acapella when they have the time, and if they don’t they just review cartoons. (Zoe has a thing for Steven Universe, but shhh.)

Evan & Jared come up with game theories when they collab on Evan’s channel. The most popular video about it is the one where they realized the theme songs of the characters in Undertale are always connected to one another.

Evan & Connor make sure to film together once every five videos. They don’t always know what they will be talking about, but Evan just hit the record button and they spend the afternoon together, after what he edits it out and keeps the important parts.

Evan & Alana do yoga on saturdays, sometimes with Connor as a special guest. It never goes as planned and always ends in laughter when one of them inevitably slips and falls.

Evan & Zoe’s collabs are kind of messy when it’s on Evan’s channel, but it’s always wonky DIY and weird cooking recipes they found online. They sing together while working.

Group channel

Alana is the one who thinks of it, because she’s been asked multiple times on her Discord if she would do a Q&A, and most of the questions are about her relationships with the other members of the team.

They call the channel Dear Unholy Five after the first meme to come out is all five responding “porn”at the same time at the question “what did the internet brought you that you would never have learned in school ?”

Zoe does most of the group challenges on this channel instead of her own, like making everyone’s makeup - this one was a disaster, they had no idea what they were doing - or watching terrible movies and commenting it.

Connor uses the channel as an excuse to play ouija. Evan is lowkey the only one enjoying himself, weirdly enough. Jared jokes that Evan has a supernatural kink on top of the tree one. “Ghost tree kink” becomes a new meme within the community.

Jared just loves being asked stuff.

The community

Because the group is close-knitted and is used to read each-other’s comments, Zoe quickly notices that some of their fans are starting to shipping them. While her and Alana’s relationship isn’t a secret - they hold hands in various vlogs and sometimes even kiss on camera, and no one really made a big deal about it - Evan isn’t officially out of the closet, Jared’s SO prefers to keep their identity private and Connor isn’t the most comfortable around feelings.

As it starts happening more and more often, Connor and Evan figure out that whatever is between them doesn’t need to make it on the internet, so they don’t confirm nor deny anything.

It only fuels the fanbase more, but because they’re such a small community based on each other’s respect and privacy they don’t pry too much, and when anyone starts to be too nosy the rest of the fanbase quickly shut them down. There are however the occasional shippers who never miss anything on screen and notice whenever Connor makes heart-eyes at Evan, or when Evan becomes flustered by Connor’s proximity.

Zoe is the one unexpectedly confirming the theories when she records the two boys singing Marianas Trench at two in the morning, and Connor suddenly kisses Evan in the middle of Here’s to the Zeros and resumes on singing like it’s nothing. The bad quality of the video doesn’t stop it from trending, before Zoe finally takes it down on Evan’s request.

The fans stay respectful of their wish for privacy, and after the first wave of hype it just becomes common knowledge that they’re together. (It doesn’t stop Connor from killing his fans a little whenever he and Evan swap clothes, though.)

1. A favorite character you have played.

I love all my PCs in one way or another, but I think right now I’m having the most fun playing Teeth!

She’s well meaning and incredibly capable, but her lack of focus, poor speech skills, and unsettling appearance often mean that the people she’s trying to help either fear her or don’t take her seriously. It’s an interesting dynamic to work with.

(Plus I love her +11 to intimidation, and how many times Tumbling Fool’s insane benefits has saved her life.)

2. Your favorite character that someone else has played.

I don’t like choosing favorites when it comes to my friends and their work, so I’ll pass on this. But I will say that, more recently, I had a lotta fun roleplaying with Rumex Capricium (@person334) during a Death House oneshot.

Rumex is a grave cleric, who mistook my rogue for a doctor based on her attire and was positively mortified any time she showcased her lack of medical training. (”Wow buddy, it uh, it looks like you really need to rearticulate your splines…” “Ma’am what the fuck are you talking about”)

9. Your favorite thing about D&D.

Messing with the other player characters in harmless ways (Lavinia’s eyepatch, Sloane’s scams, Maya’s disguises, Teeth… in general) is my absolute favorite part of DND, and is the main reason why you’ll never catch me playing a brooding, serious character.

My second favorite thing is finding creative solutions to problems; whether it be using the environment to dispatch enemies in combat, or playing charades with a lobster man because nobody speaks Undercommon.

Ulgrok the Hardy, the orc forge Cleric who is described as a “calm, serene hermit” but frequently causes the most destruction out of all of us

Birel Nairo, the wood elf Fighter (whose backstory I’m a little hazy on, but I think it involves him having failed to prevent the assassination of a noble…?)

Mite Evon, the aasimar gunsmith who is loyal to his fellow city watch members, above all else

And a wood elf assassin, whose name I just cannot seem to remember right now. Michael, if you’re reading this, I am so so sorry

And then there’s Team Skull, an all-bard party currently playing through Tales of the Yawning Portal, run by @person334:

Teeth the Dispater Tiefling Satire Bard. She’s a recovering long-term Feeblemind victim, and sometimes struggles to keep her head in the game. Also has a rat named Yu-Yu.

Glorm the Goblin Swords Bard. Due to some very weird circumstances, he’s wound up permanently disguising himself as a dwarf so he can wield Whelm.

Voltriant the Aarakocra Lore Bard. Frequently uses his flight to haul us out of trap-related trouble, and recently befriended Blackrazor.

Chaucer the Red Dragonborn Whispers Bard. Recently learned to be a little less reckless, after an incident involving a wall of fire and a doppelganger that nearly killed him.

Callisto Arktos, the Triton Valor Bard. As the only one of us who’s proficient in heavy weapons, she’s usually the one wrecking people’s shit. Once stole an axe from a dragon’s horde and then killed them with it.

And sometimes also Riki Beatbox, the Kenku Bard, who has been phasing in and out since Sunless Citadel.

(Since we’re playing Dead in Thay, we’re temporarily being accompanied by Lilly Vale, Arkan, and River Neptis. I don’t know much about these characters, but from what I gather they started out in Curse of Strahd and all really hate red wizards.)

Prolific Melbourne artist and designer Beci Orpin is one of the hardest working people we know. She and her husband Raph Rashid, a Melbourne hospitality legend, and their teenage sons Ari + Tyke are bunkering down in Brunswick right now during this time of social distancing.

Although Beci has worked as a freelancer for a huge part of her career, it’s been over six years since she’s actually worked at home – and it’s been a bit of a challenge getting back into the swing of things. We spoke to Beci about reviving her home office situation, her fears for their family’s restaurant businesses, and hopes for reassessing humanity, when all this is over.

Hey Beci! Thanks for being the first person we’ve profiled in this new series. How has your work been affected by the current state of the world?

I had heaps of travel booked for April and May – I was travelling for more than a month in America, Perth, Sydney and Byron Bay and that’s been all cancelled. I’ve been pretty quiet with work and thought I might just not have any…but I have gotten some jobs over the last few days. They’re all kind of based around health, which is great because it’s something that is still at the forefront of what people are willing to spend money on and invest in right now. It’s not manic yet, but I was kind of preparing for it to be nothing for a few months. And it still might be.

What are your workdays looking like at the moment? 

I’ve got a terrible home office so I’ve just been trying to get it together, I can’t work in a space that I don’t love! I’ve been trying to make it into something that I actually want to spend time in. I try to keep a routine, but I am finding myself very easily distracted.

What are you getting distracted by?

The washing, the dishes! Also, my kids are hungry ALL the time!

What’s the biggest challenge for you guys right now?

Definitely Raph’s business [Beci’s husband, Raph Rashid, owns Juanita Peaches, Beatbox Kitchen, All Day Donuts + Taco Truck in Melbourne]. It’s terrible for Raph. It’s awful. He had every event cancel that was booked, so that was just crazy. We’re definitely trying to adapt in any way possible by offering alternatives – coming to meet people, leaving food at people’s doors, we’re hoping that will get us through because a lot of the restaurant staff are on contracts so obviously we’d really love to keep as many staff as possible. Trying to ensure that it survives will be huge, and to try to keep supporting staff who we feel a responsibility to.

We’re pretty active, so I think it’s going to be kind of hard to stay inside. I’m kind of excited too though. I had such a mental start to the year, I am kind of excited to stay inside. Although I’m sure that will last three days and then I’ll be losing my mind.

Yeah! I hope I don’t go crazy or drive my boyfriend insane whilst we’re both stuck in the house together..

Yeah! I’m super grateful that we have a garden so I can go outside, and we’ve got a big park across the road so we can still go there.

Is there anything you’re feeling optimistic about?

I feel optimistic about, at the end of it, what people will learn from all this. About reassessing humanity. I don’t know. I hope it will give people a better definition of consuming, and what they can be grateful for in a modern society.

I think really good things come out of dark times – it’s historical. It will be horrific, but I hope there are some good things.

I’m hopeful for that too. There hasn’t been a time where everyone in the whole world is going through the same thing, and there is potentially a lot of power in that. 

Yeah, I think so too. It’s a bit of a wake-up call I think. I go up and down. At one moment I think everything’s going to be fine, and then the next minute I’m like oh my god, are we going to be okay?

Who or what is bringing you good vibes right now? 

The internet is really good right now, I think you can see all the benefits of social media, which might be one of the positive things that come out of this too. I’ve had so many great conversations with people already, there are so many incredible memes. I’ve been chatting to this girl in LA on Instagram (@gentlethrills) who has been doing all these cool projects at home, and I am so here for it! It’s what prompted me to do my home office, I’m loving all that kind of stuff because it’s really easy to put on the internet.

What are you listening to? 

I find it hard to focus on podcasts, but there are lots of cool Covid-19-themed playlists on Spotify right now I’ve been listening to!

What are the things you’re trying to do to stay sane on a daily basis?

I’ve got heaps of creative projects. There’s an embroidery that I want to do, I want to make some pillowcases, rearranging furniture… all of those things make me really happy. I’m planting vegetables at the moment, meditation, try to keep a routine for me and the kids, try to not watch too much on-demand TV. I’m thinking of doing virtual dinner parties where we Skype a whole bunch of our friends and eat dinner together.

What businesses are you trying to support right now?

Anything local. If you do have money and you’re not too scared to spend it, then definitely just find a homewares business and buy some stuff for your house! I just bought a vase from Ellie King. We’ve got some savings so we are kind of in the position to help people, so I’m kind of just like, can I subscribe to a weekly flower subscription from Hattie Molloy? Can I get a voucher and do it later? I’m trying to support friends who run their own businesses and who I know would really struggle. Also people like Tsuno, a subscription service for pads and tampons etc. I just really want to keep my local community going. Who can we buy from and what we can do to support people?

But even as he was writing down lyrics — picking out references from an iPhone note of random stuff he’d been keeping — he was strangely sure of himself.“I don’t want to sound bigheaded,” he said, “but I knew it would do bits.” (Translation: Mr. Austin knew the song would connect widely.)The result was “Mary Berry,” a delightful, deadpan ode to life in small-town Britain. The title is a nod to the 84-year-old former “Great British Bake Off” co-host. In the song, Mr. Austin says he “needs a girl like” Ms. Berry; he defeats a local man in badminton; pulls out a secret Android cellphone; performs his own circumcision; threatens to fight the TV host Piers Morgan; flexes his discount Slazenger sneakers; and announces, “Top thing on my bucket list is to slide tackle the Queen.” For his rap alter-ego he borrowed the name Niko Bellic, an Eastern European gangster character from the video game Grand Theft Auto IV.As Mr. Austin later wrote on Instagram: “I decided to make a song within like 2 days and then 3 weeks later I signed a deal for it, now it’s 2mil+ streams across 3 platforms CRUUUD.”This success seems both calculated and hilariously accidental. Teen creators now live knowing that any given thing they post might just change their life.

Crafting the Second Single on the Poets Estate

On a recent weekday on the high street of the tiny old town of Newport Pagnell, near London, Mr. Austin sat in a foofy coffee shop with a Realtree-style coat zipped to the neck. (He only opened it once, briefly, to remove a single key from a Prada fanny pack surreptitiously strapped to his waist.) He grew up, and still lives, in a humdrum subdivision down the road called the Poets Estate. He and his buddies used to skateboard, break into abandoned places, hang out at the kebab shop.And the rest of the time — “deffo, 100 percent” — he was on the internet. At 8 or 9, that meant building Lego animations on YouTube. (“Like, a skeleton horse chasing a guy,” Mr. Austin said.) By 14 or 15, it was prank calls and mock news channel stuff. He managed to build up a bit of a YouTube following, then switched his attention to Instagram, where he first posted cool-guy fit pics before having a revelation.“Mate, if I’m just showing you what I’m wearing, that’s not gonna get me anywhere. This is Instagram. You can’t deep it,” Mr. Austin said, meaning “take it seriously.” So he pivoted and started posting stuff like “me looking in the mirror, and in the mirror is this really buff guy,” he said. “It was the right turn to make.”Around the same time, inspired by the multi-hyphenate talent Tyler, the Creator, he introduced a clothing label called Crowd; he now sells to customers as far as Dubai. He used to work at a Subway, but quit when a Crowd pop-up netted him more money in one weekend than he’d previously made in a month. He even wrote an elaborate resignation letter: “Thanks to everyone even Carlos bye Marisa I hope I can transfer my sandwich making skills to my future day to day life.”As much as anything, “Mary Berry” was a promo for Crowd. Underappreciated Nekomas x Secret Talents

Because I have so many headcanons about wonderful boys who need so much more appreciation.

Kai plays the piano and saxophone and he sings! He’s pretty good, but he doesn’t really show off about it: it’s just a hobby. When the rest of the team find out, he’s happy to play them a couple of songs but he drew the line at All Star.

Yamamoto is actually really good at painting. He’s especially good at painting landscapes. It calms him down a lot. Akane’s room has lots of pretty paintings in all her favourite colours on the walls! The rest of the team are super supportive and think that the paintings are amazing... Kuroo asks if Tora can use him as a nude model. Kuroo gets hit.

Fukunaga can beatbox and play the drums really well. Nobody suspects it at all. Even when they hear it they can’t quite gather how good he is, and how someone so quiet can do something so loud. Nonetheless, the boy’s got rhythm! Sometimes, on a silent and boring bus journey he’ll start beatboxing for either Kai or Inuoka (or both) to liven the journey up!

Inuoka can rap! There is a video of him online rapping Alphabet Aerobics and it’s good. Also, unlike the others, he’s happy to perform meme songs (he knows all the words to You Reposted In The Wrong Neighbourhood and all of cupcakKe’s songs and Yaku is appalled). 

Shibayama can dance! Really well. He has a YouTube channel where he posts his dance videos and it really boosts his confidence! He doesn’t tell the others for a while because he’s a little scared of what they may think, but one day Kuroo finds his channel whilst browsing and absolutely loses it. Since when was his baby kouhai allowed to have such moves? Anyway, in his shock he shares it with the rest of the team and somewhere on the channel Inuoka finds a video of a request to do this dance. He is never the same again. Also, (based on this hc here and the thought that Yachi too is an awesome dancer) the two of them do a couple of collabs together forming an unlikely friendship between Inuoka and Kiyoko (I told myself I wouldn’t make it shippy but hey)
