Meet Bikeflights Ambassador Maria Doering
We caught up with Bikeflights Ambassador Maria Doering as she moved from North Carolina to Georgia, transitioning from undergraduate student-athlete to graduate student-athlete, a path that would have been unlikely had she stayed in her home country of Germany.
When Maria was growing up, she was eager to do whatever her older brother did. By age 10, despite not knowing other girls who mountain biked, Maria, like her brother, was traveling around Germany competing in mountain bike races.
“I just gradually got more and more competitive every year and wanted to do more races and take it more seriously,” she says, as she focused primarily on cross country and marathon-style mountain bike races.
After high school in Germany, athletes are typically faced with an either-or decision: Either continue to pursue sport, or continue with education. Fortunately she had some insight into a way to do both.
“I never wanted to just do one, and I had a friend who did the same with cross country skiing. He went to the US and was part of a college team. I thought that's a pretty cool opportunity to be part of a collegiate team and get your education but also get the support from the university to keep racing. So that made me want to come [to the US] and just pursue that path.”
Maria enrolled at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, fulfilling her desire to both obtain a degree in Business Administration and compete at a high level as a cyclist. It also allowed her to widen her scope of cycling disciplines beyond cross country to a variety of mountain bike disciplines like downhill, dual slalom, enduro and even road and cyclocross.
In 2022, Maria proved her off-road versatility and won a collegiate national championship in the individual omnium in which athletes compete in four disciplines: cross country, dual slalom, short track cross country and downhill.
It’s worth mentioning she’s already making a mark on her new collegiate team at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). She won events in three mountain bike disciplines in the first weekend of racing.
But while pursuing a master’s degree in business and competing for the collegiate cycling team seems like a full plate, Maria has found time for the past two years to throw on a kit for the Bissell ABG Cycling Team out of Michigan, a primarily gravel-focused team.
“When I tried it out, I really loved it, because I really do love the adventure component of gravel racing. And the long distance thing fits me pretty well,” she says of jumping into the gravel world.
And despite spending most of her competitive cycling life on a mountain bike, Maria has once again shown her ability to adapt and excel in a new discipline, appearing on podiums at gravel’s premier races like Unbound Gravel, Barry-Roubaix and Rule of Three.
Not to be confined to competing off-road on wheels, Maria has shown further versatility competing in the off-road triathlon series XTERRA, taking fifth in the US championship in Colorado in August.
Between graduate business classes and racing with her SCAD teammates, Maria looks to continue her gravel success at Big Sugar in October and to hit the Michigan trails for Iceman Cometh in November.
As many Bikeflights customers know, sometimes it’s emotionally difficult to part with a beloved bike, reluctantly place it in a box, attach the Bikeflights label and say final goodbyes with no hope of ever seeing it again.
Last spring Maria found a new owner for her cyclocross bike, boxed it up and Bikeflights’ed it off into the sunset.
A week later, on the streets of Stillwater, Oklahoma, as thousands of anxious cyclists milled around waiting for the start of MidSouth, Maria and her bike were briefly reunited. It looked a little different, having lost all its gears but one and a new cyclist by its side, but it was still the bike she remembered.
“I thought it was kind of cool to see my bike there, only a week later.”

Belgian Spring
The 2017 Barry Roubaix Story.
It's hot, it's dark, and it smells real bad. That is how I wake up in a hotel in the middle of nowhere Michigan with three other grown adults. Hotel rooms full of cyclists always have a similar smell to dorm rooms. As I walk to the window in the dark I'm dreading what I'm about to see, RAIN. Lots of rain with no signs of letting up.
As I ate my hotel breakfast after a shitty nights sleep, I noticed other cyclists starting to gather for their "continental breakfast" in the hotel lobby. I think to myself, "why do I keep signing up for this shit".
It's been a few years since my last "Barry". 2014 was the last time I was in Hastings Michigan, a cute little town just south of Grand Rapids. I always hear Barry come up when gravel races are mentioned. Lets be clear, there isn't really any gravel or mud at Barry. Rather, there is SAND, lots of sloppy sand that destroys bikes. If you've ever done any kind of hiking, cycling, or camping in Michigan, you're familiar with all the sand everywhere.
This year it was going to rain all day, and never get to 40 degrees. This ain't my 1st rodeo. I've ridden in these conditions before, too often actually. I know how to dress. Wool. Wool is your friend and should be your base. Wool is some magical fabric that man can not recreate synthetically. When wool gets wet, it stays warm. Nothing else does that. Then you need a decent shell. An actual rain coat. My weapon of choice has been the Giro Neo Rain jacket lately. Really a garbage bag would work just as well, something that is basically plastic to keep moisture out and heat in. Hands and feet are the tricky part. Shoe covers of some sort were a must. I had some crappy Specialized ones that I don't recommend, but they worked well enough. My gloves, my wonderful Bontrager gloves that I've worn all winter saved my life. I also recently invested in a Gore cycling cap. Which might be the single best piece of cycling apparel I have ever purchased. My head was warm and dry, the short bill helped keep the rain out of my face.
Sitting in the starting grid, I took a mental survey of the surrounding riders emotional vibes. Many were jovial, make jokes and talking shit. Others, have already lost. Their faces long and full of dread. This won't be a fitness test. No, rather it was going to be test of a persons will and inner strength.
Rain. Hard sleeting rain started started to pelt everyone once we hit the 1st pavement section. My only concern was my vision. I wear glasses and at some point I had to pull over and gently put them away in my jersey pocket. Which slowed me down quite a bit. I had to be more careful of my lines and try to hang with someone who could guide me. perferable with a real fender.
Despair, fear, loneliness, are how I've been seeing people describe their day at Barry-Roubaix. Mine could not be further from that. Like I said, this ain't my 1st rodeo. Mentally, I fine all day. Happy even, jamming to songs in my head leap frogging from one quitter to the next. While everyone was indoors playing on their power pads (Zwift) all winter, I was outside riding my bike. I'm accustom to shitty weather, and I think that paid off. I dropped people I had no business dropping. I also never really pushed it as hard as I could have, for whatever reason.
Eventually the rain let up and I could put my glasses back on and turn the gas back on. Half way through I started picking up others from Chicago. Eventually I'd lose them in the headwind. Yeah, headwind? I don't remember Michigan having much wind. WTF. Towards the end I would end up working with the the woman who would later win the women's Single Speed category until her rear hub started to crap out and I started recognizing more local kits in the distance. Clicking, scrapping, knocking, my poor bike pushed toward familiar roads and riders. We were on the roads back into town, and I was on a mission to catch every Chicago rider I could.
With the motivation of seeing Chainlink, Lovestar, and Tuxedo Thunder riders in the distance, it was time to be done with all this. By which point I could no longer feel my feet, at all. My hands decided to start getting warm again at the end, letting me eat a little. Slogging through those last few miles, trying to reach and pass every kit I could recognize was draining me. The last few bits of gravel/sand were REAL soft, sucking my power like a vampire in a blood bank. Pavement never felt so good beneath me as I rolled off that gritty spongy road.
With blocks to go, this one guy caught up to, and passed me. Who, I had been yo-yoing with all day and thought I had dropped for good a little bit ago. Dammit. He beat me. I was dead. I was done. I cheered a few Chicago friends at the finish before I made a B-line to the car to get that floor heater on full blast.
Only in the car do I finally become unhappy. Not cause I'm cold or didn't do the time I wanted, but the realization sets in that my bike is trashed and will probably need to be over hauled, replacing several parts. Oh, and my car is now full of sand. SIGH. Its a real Charlie Brown moment in that parking lot in Michigan, that I wouldn't trade for anything else.
Until next year Barry-Roubaix.
Thank you SnowyMountain for letting me use some photos!!

Best Cycling Races in the U.S.
If you are looking for the best cycling races in the US, then you are at the right place!
Cycling race is a thrilling event for both viewers and participants. Slower than car rallies but faster than foot-races, these races tend to provide a memorable impact upon the viewers. The United States of America is one of the largest hubs, producing world class cyclists. The first American bike race took place in 1878 in Boston, Massachusetts. Moreover, Chicago soon became the hub of bike racing in the country.
Below The List Of Best Cycling Races In USA.
Dirty Kanza 200 Where: Flint Hills region of Kansas When: May (first Saturday after Memorial Day)
As it sounds, Dirty Kanza is popular for its rugged and rough route. The competitiveness of this event has been the main cause for its glamour. 1500 participants tend to participate, and eventually narrow down to 34 participants in the inaugural event. The completion of the 200-mile ultramarathon is itself an award for the participants effort and dedication. But, don’t worry if you aren’t ready for a long-distance event, then you can opt for the 100-mile race. But, beware of the rocky and dangerous hills of Kansas, as it can be thrill for some and a matter of life and death for some!
Tour of Battenkill Where: Greenwich, New York When: Late May
The largest pro-amateur bicycle road race in North America is held in New York’s Battenkill valley. Unlike Kansas, Battenkill valley provides a lush green, exotic landscape, where nature is at its peak. Lush greenery, blossoming flowers, lakes reflecting the sky, and valleys tearing mountains add life to the cycle race. Although the distance is shorter than the rest of contemporary events, but the dynamics of this event make the experience worth wile.
Race Across America Where: Oceanside, California, to Annapolis, Maryland When: June
The race across America is a life time experience and a global achievement. The 3000-mile super ultramarathon is 30 % longer than the grand event of Tour de France. For 36 years this event has been challenging extreme cyclists all around the world to push their physical and mental limits.
The event starts in Oceanside, intersects 12 states, and climbs 175,000 feet. The route of this event intercepts four largest rivers of America, three major mountain ranges, and iconic landmarks such as Sonoran deserts, Gettysburg, and Monument Valley.
Barry-Roubaix Where: Hastings, Michigan When: Late March
A classic-style cycling experience featuring a variety of terrains to test cyclists of multiple levels. The four race lengths of Barry-Roubaix provide riders of different calibers to test their skills. It is also the largest gravel road bicycle race in the world. The race starts with over 3800 participants, and rewards winners over 34,000$. Wave starts provides riders ample of time to enjoy the scenery and landscapes.
Tour of Utah Ultimate Challenge Where: Utah (exact location varies) When: Early August
If you want your legs and quads to scream for mercy then this event is just for you! An ultimate fitness test and endurance challenge! But simultaneously, the compelling scenery across Utah, compensates for its difficulty. Highlighting some of the world’s best cyclists and teams for seven days in August, this event attracts global attention as the top international cycling event following the great Tour de France. The week-long Tour of Utah has attained the reputation as “America’s Toughest Stage Race,” incorporating Utah’s profuse natural beauty with consistent elevation changes and difficult mountain climbs.
Crater Lake Century Where: Crater Lake, Oregon When: Late August
Surrounding the deepest lake in the United States and the 7th deepest in the world, this ride starts at the Fort Klamath Museum on Crater Lake Highway (Rte 62) at 4,000 ft elevation. Even amongst volcanic wonders, Crater Lake could be difficult to describe The lake itself inspires cyclists to exert to their fullest extent. The bright blue lake reflecting the sky provides heavenly experience for the cyclists and makes them feel as if they are riding the skies. It is dubbed as “the best race in Oregon” by bicycling magazine.
Tour of California Where: California When: Mid to late May
The tour of California is an extremely competitive event amongst other events. Only the pros and workaholics get across the finish line. If you are dreaming to fight in this heart throbbing war, you have to train until pain is your mate. Event arrangements are the specialty for this event. Refreshments, mechanics, and judge-selection tend to be the highest of the organizer’s priorities.
Leadville 100 MTB Where: Leadville, Colorado When: Mid-August
Each year only 65% of participants make it till the finish line. If you want yourself to be amongst the lucky few you need to train really hard for this event. Achieving the elevation of more than 13,000 feet, this rocky terrain challenges major cyclists all across America. Held in 1994 for the first time, The Leadville 100 MTB is the second oldest 100-mile event amongst other events held in United States. The course comprises of gravel roads and mild trails.
Mt. Tam Century Ride Where: Marin County, California When: Early August
If you are looking for a breathtaking experience then this one is just for you. Don’t judge this event by its distance, as its distance is deluding. Elevated terrains, rocky roads, and extreme endurance is required to finish this 100-mile event. On the contrary, cyclists find this event more challenging and thrilling as compared to other events. According to a survey held in 2019, 96% riders recommended the Marin Century to a friend. 6 route options, each with a higher elevation allow cyclists to challenge themselves. The rest stops and post-ride food incorporate 15 fresh fruits including strawberries and cherries, baked goods, Brie cheese, and CloverSonoma chocolate milk etc.

Welcome to the inaugural Sunday Creek Classic!
Yes, Mt Buggery is very real. The first time you travel over it and through the rolling hills into Jimna you know it’s a special place and begging to be cycled. So with the increasing popularity of gravel bikes and big wheel mountain bikes 2021 seems like the right time to bring an event like the Sunday Creek Classic to life.
REGISTER NOW: www.sundaycreekclassic.cc
This event has been inspired by the great gravel events around the world, by European classics that feature wild weather and brutal courses and more recent events in America like Barry-Roubaix, Dirty Kanza and the Belgian Waffle Ride.
Starting in the sleepy farming town of Kenilworth, the 120km, almost entirely gravel route, heads towards Kandanga and Bella Creek and then west to Jimna before returning through Sunday Creek to Kenilworth. The route takes in everything from dry eucalyptus to sub-tropical rainforest forest and open cattle grazing country. And with 3,000 meters of climbing including the notorious climb to Mt Buggery, this event will be one of the toughest one day gravel events on the Australian calendar.
The 50km course is no laughing matter either with 1,500 meters of elevation, mostly in the second half of the course. It starts out along the same trails as the 120km course and then heads west to climb the ridge-line that starts with Mt Borumba and heads south-east back into Kenilworth the hard way.
It’s going to be tough, but nothing great comes without pushing yourself beyond what you believe is possible.
Personally, the goal of the event is two fold – firstly, I love Kenilworth and believe the area is an underrated adventure playground. As they grow, events like the Sunday Creek Classic can have a real positive impact on small town economies like Kenilworth.
The second goal is to build an event that becomes a must-do classic on the Australian cycling calendar. It will take time but I believe that region and the course have the makings of something that can become truely great.
So on behalf of the team, thank you for entering. See you out there!

A Mariposa randonneur bicycle built in 1980 for the Raid Pyrenean. Mike Barry Sr. and his business partner, Mike Brown, built two custom randonneur bikes for the ride with similarly unique features; internal gear brake cables, generator lighting activated by a gear lever on the seat tube so that the lights could be easily turned on and off in the tunnels, a pin held handmade decalleur, a lightweight rear carrier for their rain capes and other wet weather gear....the bikes were built with lightweight Vitus tubing. Although they were building many bikes at the time with 650B wheels, these were built with 700C wheels as they rode Clement Paris - Roubaix tubulars for the Raid as they were lighter and handled better than the clinchers. Both bikes were equipped with Mafac, Simplex and Cinelli components and Ideale saddles. #randonneurbike #mariposabicycles #mariposabikes #handbuiltbicycle #handmadebicycle #stronglight #ideale #cinelli #vintagebike #vitus #clement #raidpyrenean #decalleur (at Bicycle Specialties Ltd. - Mariposa Bicycles)
