Just after midnight on the 3rd of March, 1868, whilst Barnum was sleeping a fire engulfed his museum. The lingering winter air was so biting that the water froze as it left the fire hoses. "Barnum & Elwood" In the past it had concerned me a little bit, that both the names I'm using for my duo are names used in other famous duos. Elwood, of the "Blues Brothers", part of the duo "Elwood & Joliet Jake" and Barnum, of the duo Barnum & Bailey (an American tradition which I am sad to see end). But something about these names just always felt right, both as individuals for the characters & they sound good together as well. Elwood, just always seemed like a cool, old-timey country name. & Being that the series takes place in 1932, & that Elwood is a country goat who grew up on a farm, who also happens to eat wood, it just felt right. Also, I am a tremendous fan of Dan Aykroyd as an actor, but especially as a writer, so I've just grown up always loving the name Elwood. The Elwood's have that cool composure in common, but as for Elwood's character, there was probably a big influence from Woody Harrelson's character from Cheers. For Barnum, though it's not really a first name, it kinda sounds like an old school first name, & P.T. Barnum was a huge influence on the con-man character of Barnum. P.T. Barnum one of the single most interesting and dynamic characters in American history, it just felt like the perfect homage to the great huckster. (He was also influenced quite a bit by Professor Marvel from Wizard of Oz & Saul Goodman too). In 1843, the USA's greatest showman, P. T. Barnum opened Barnum's American Museum in New York City. Within its walls a zoo, an aquarium, and performing gymnasts, magicians, fortune tellers and 'human freaks' all existed together. The museum also housed a theatre, pictured above, which was the first to show matinée performances - another creation from the American circus tycoon. The name Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) is synonymous with the circus. He is, after all, the Barnum of Barnum & Bailey which, after merging with Ringling Bros. (following the deaths of both Barnum & Bailey), became America's longest running circus, pitching up for the final time in 2017. On the contemporary popularity of Mr P. T. Barnum, historian James W. Cook asserts: "Barnum was the most widely visible and widely known American of the 19th century.
