✿ Summary: Sometimes you just need a midnight swim and let the night take over
✿ Pairing: Established relationship (kind of established lol); Idol! Taehyung x Barista! Reader
✿ Rating: Explicit (18+)
✿ Genre: Established relationship(ish), smut, and fluff
✿ Warnings: Smut and swearing
✿ Part of, ‘That Irish Barista series
“Why do you want us to leave?”
“Jungkook, just leave.”
He watched his members leave his room (he ignored the grunting and the sighs) and he smiled to himself. Tonight he invited Y/N over but this time it was a little different. Instead of having an inside date, he wanted to take her to the private pool. He asked the staff to have more privacy by shutting off the security cameras because he didn’t want anything to be leaked. They easily agreed to his conditions because one, he was Kim Taehyung, and two, he threatened to sue them if anything was leaked.
He needs to get his mind off of last week, the fact that his leader likes the girl that he was in love with. What are the odds? Whoever was writing his story really knew how to make things complicated. He of course didn’t tell Y/N anything because he didn’t want her to feel more uncomfortable with Namjoon. Yes, Namjoon is his leader and brother but Y/N is his and he wouldn’t give up that easily. He’s been waiting his whole life for someone like her.
He heard a knock at the door and walked towards it, “Jungkook, I swear-”
“Why do you always think I’m Jungkook?”
He looked down at her and felt embarrassed. She gave him a small smirk and let out a small laugh at his reaction. He looked her up and down with curious eyes at her outfit. She was wearing a baggy black shirt that barely covered her biker shorts and her hair was in a messy bun. She had a bag and he was assuming her essentials were in there. There was something about her in biker shorts that made him feel hot, “I’m wearing my bathing suit like you told me to do.”
“Ah, I can’t wait to see you in it.”
She rolled her eyes and looked away from his mischievous eyes, “It’s a one-piece, don’t get too excited.”
He let out a deep chuckle and leaned down to her level to whisper in her ear. Her eyes widen and she felt her whole body get warm, “I don’t care what it is, you're going to be fucking hot.”
“A-Anyways, let-let’s go.”
She turned around and he watched her walk down the hall. He let out a small chuckle and leaned against the door frame, “You're going the wrong way, princess. Also, you kinda need me to get in.”
“Shut up and get your shit before I leave.”
“You won’t do that, I won't let you.”
“You're so annoying.”
He grabbed his bag and headed out to see Y/N leaning against the wall looking down at the floor with her flushed face. He chuckled at her and locked his door. He went up to her and trapped her against the wall. She looked up at him with wide eyes but she didn’t push him away. Taehyung leaned down and kissed her neck gently. She let out a small moan and pushed him away, “L-Let’s go.”
The two walked up to the swimming pool and Y/N stared at the long pool with wide eyes. “This is so nice...are you sure I can go in it?”
Taehyung let out a small laugh and placed his bag on the table. He grabbed her bag out of her arm as she continued to stare at the pool with wide eyes, “Of course, you can. I can’t wait to see you wet.”
“You're so perverted, god.”
He shrugged his shoulders and took off his shirt as she watched closely. She stared at his slightly tanned skin and the only thing she thought was sucking on his broad shoulders. Leaving marks on his neck and scratching his back as he had his way with her. Of course, they haven’t had sex yet but that didn’t stop her from picturing things. He glanced at her with a raised eyebrow but pretended he was looking at something else. He walked past her and gently smacked her butt causing her to jump from the impact, “You’re so perverted, god.”
She pouted at this and looked at the water, “Don’t mock me...”
He ignored her and went to the steps of the pool. Slowly going into the cold water and he was aware that she was watching. He got into the pool fully and put some of the water into his hair as he looked at her, “Are you coming in or you're just going to watch me?”
“Shut up! I wasn’t watching.”
She took off her shirt and shorts as he watched her. She was wearing a simple pink one-piece with bows at her shoulders, it showed off her curves perfectly. He swam towards her and leaned against the wall making her raise her eyebrow, “What?”
“You just look so hot.”
She ignored this and took a sip of her water before letting her hair down from the bun. She walked towards the steps and Taehyung quickly swam back with excitement. She sat on the first step and he sat next to her. He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her into him, making her sit in his lap. Her legs caged his thighs and she wrapped her arms around his neck, “Aren't there cameras here?”
“Yeah but I told them to shut it off tonight.”
“Oh? Why?”
He sucked at her neck gently and her moaning echoed through the empty pool, “Want to find out.”
She pushed away and went down towards his shorts. She looked back up at him and gave him a smirk, “Oh, I want to find out.”
He smirked at her and looked around, “Thought you were nervous about the cameras?”
“I trust you.”
His smirk was completely wiped off and he looked at her with a soft smile, “You do?”
She looked up at him and returned the softness, “Of course I do.”
“Fuck, Y/N...I...” Should I tell her I love her? No...it’s not time. “I trust you too.”
She pulled down his pants and wrapped her hand around the base so she could wrap her lips around his tip. She leaned down and brought the tip to her mouth as Taehyung gasped through his teeth, “Ah~.”
The feeling of her lips and tongue licking at his slit and going around his tip made him go crazy. Y/N was all his, no matter what, “Fuck, Y/N.” His head lolled to the side as he watched her lap at his head, “That feels so good.”
“That’s good to know.” She wrapped her hands around him and started moving up and down. She glanced up at him to see his eyebrows twisted in pleasure. She went back down and wrapped her mouth around his tip again, “So good for me.”
She let out a muffled noise as she continued her doings. His fingers threaded through her hair as she went faster, “Y-Y/N go faster.”
She looked up at him and moaned out at his dazed out look, her mouth never leaving his cock. Her tongue lapped at his slit eagerly, wanting it to come out quicker. Her hands moved so fast that he couldn’t even process anything. It only took a few more pumps of her hands and her sucking him hard that he just came from one glance. Heavy breathing echoed through the room and Y/N wiped her mouth as she looked at him.
“You good?”
He let out a small chuckle and looked at her, “I’m good but we're not done.”
“Oh?”
“Go on the ledge and spread.”
She raised her eyebrow at him but nodded her head. She sat on the edge and did what she was told to do. Taehyung pulled up his shorts and looked down at her with him biting his lip. Her face flushed and she glared at him, “S-Stop staring at me! It’s annoying.”
“God, you're such a brat.”
“No, I’m-”
She jumped slightly when she felt a smack on her thigh and a loud moan escaped, “You are one.”
He glanced down and out of nowhere, he flicked at her clit, hard. She jumped at the sudden pain and covered her mouth with her hand. He pushed aside her bathing suit and was met with her glistening entrance and he watched her clenching around nothing, “Why you clenching?”
“Don’t ask stupid questions.”
He clicked his tongue and shook his head at her, “You're so naughty.” He flicked at her clit again making her clench. He slapped the inside of her thigh and she shook her head, “S-Stop. Don’t you want a t-taste?”
“Don’t say that. It feels weird.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know maybe because the last time you said that you gave me soy sauce in water telling me it was coke.”
“I thought it was funny...”
He growled and dropped to his knees in front of her and his fingers pulled her folds apart so he could admire the pussy that he came to love. She was about to say something but was cut off with a loud moan. He began to lap at the swollen clit and she felt her back arch. His hands gripped her thighs to keep them apart as he sucked on the bud. She whined and panted in pure bliss as she held his head in place.
He contentedly licked and sucked at her folds. He was glad that he made this date happen. Her hands gripped at his hair as Taehyung licks became harder. She felt herself getting hot and pulled down her bathing suit to grope herself as she pinched her nipple when he kissed her clit. She felt herself let loose and the moans echoed through the room. He removed himself and looked down at her with a smirk. He leaned down and sucked at the top of her boob and left a hickey, “You're mine.”
“I-I’m yours...”
He put her bathing suit back in place and kissed her cheek, “You're okay?”
She nodded her head and wrapped her arms around his neck, “Can we cuddle?”
“You want to cuddle in the water?”
“Yes...And then we can eat our lunch. You know the actual date.”
He let out a small laugh and leaned down kissing her forehead, “Okay, that sounds nice. I got your favorite food too.”
“You treat me so well...Now cuddle with me, asshole.”
“Yes, love.”

You had been on tour with Yoongi the whole time filming every single thing you could. It was your unofficial job while you were on the tour and it was kind of fun, you were almost sure you were going to miss doing this when the tour was eventually over. As his girlfriend and unofficial videographer, you capture not only his performances but also intimate, heartwarming moments behind the stage and even moments between the two of you that the fans can't help but love whenever they get to watch the moments back.
The crowd’s roar can still be heard faintly from outside the venue as Yoongi collapses on the couch in the green room, his breath uneven but his smile wide. He'd been looking forward to ending the show so he could come back and see you.
“Another one down,” he says, brushing his hand through his damp hair, the sweat making his hair dye run just a little as he sighed in relief. As much as he adored performing he liked this moment a whole lot better. It was when the show was over and he got to relax, laying on the sofa and reliving every single moment that had happened on the stage.
“You killed it tonight.” You give him a soft nudge, holding up the camera, smirking behind the camera as you giggle a little.
“Care to say something to your fans?” You arched a brow as the tired Yoongi was completely replaced and the energetic one you knew came back. Yoongi grinned, giving the camera a playful wink as he sat up straight.
“What should I say? Thank you for coming to my show… and for putting up with this one,” he teases, nodding toward you which you scoffed about. You roll your eyes and laugh at him, pulling a face behind the camera.
“They love me, what can I say?” you say sarcastically. The fans really did love you—ever since you started showing up in his tour vlogs, they’ve been shipping you two hard. What started as a simple behind-the-scenes role had blossomed into a full-on fan-favorite love story. It was the final show though which meant this was going to be the last vlog you had to do together but you just remembered all of the old ones.
Tumblr media
]
Cafe Vlog
It was early in the morning, the sun just peeking over the horizon as the camera clicked on. You and Yoongi were sitting in a café in some city, the name long forgotten after so many stops that the two of you had over this whole trip. You'd tried to keep up, even picking up magnets from every stop that the two of you had. Yoongi’s wearing a mask and a bucket hat, but his eyes are smiling over at you. He loved that you'd taken so well to the camera and were enjoying the job he'd given to you.
“Coffee time,” you say, the camera panning to Yoongi as you giggle behind it, the camera shaking ever-so-slightly but he smirked under his mask.
“This one can’t function without it.” You finished earning a scoff from Yoongi. It wasn't like he was the only one who couldn't survive without coffee in the mornings, he knew that for a fact you were the same way since he'd spent the last four years in a relationship with you,
“Don’t lie, you’re the same,” he retorts, nudging your arm with a small smile as you giggle at him.
"Shh, no one needs to know about me. It's all about youuuu," You giggled zooming the camera in and out on his face before moving it to begin zooming in on the barista making your drinks. In the background, you hear Yoongi humming softly to himself, completely forgetting about the recording.
When he finally notices the camera pointing at him, he gives it an exaggerated, tired look and blushes a little when he realises you'd been recording his humming habit.
“Can’t a guy have some peace?” He teases, holding his hands up and covering the lens while smirking at you.
“Not when he’s this cute,” you say, flipping the camera back to yourself for a moment before turning it off. But even as the camera powers down, Yoongi leans in to kiss your cheek, an act so casual, yet it never fails to send butterflies through your chest.
Tumblr media
Concert Vlog
It’s late after another concert. Yoongi’s in his sweats, lying on the hotel room bed, half-asleep but still glued to his phone, responding to fans on Weverse. You’re sitting cross-legged beside him, editing the vlog footage from the day, clicking through it all to figure out what to edit. The camera was currently sitting across from you both on the mantle recording without either of you knowing it was on.
“You gonna keep ignoring me?” you tease, smirking at Yoongi who looked two minutes away from sleeping. Yoongi glances up, his eyes heavy with exhaustion but filled with warmth, he smiles tiredly at you. He wasn't ignoring you per se but he was shattered after the concert and wanted nothing more than to fall asleep.
“I’m not ignoring you. Just…multitasking,” He yawns, stretching out on the sofa and letting out a small whimper when his back cracked a little.
You laugh softly, slowly getting up from your place on the floor but the camera stays on him a bit longer than intended, capturing the moment when he finally tosses his phone aside and pulls you into his chest. He wraps his arms around you, resting his chin on top of your head.
The two of you forget the camera’s still on the bed, capturing the way he murmurs into your hair and snuggles into you closely, relaxing completely with you right by his side,
“I’m really glad you’re here.” He whispers, slowly linking your hands together and squeezing softly,
“Always,” you reply softly, cuddling into him shutting your eyes and humming softly.
"I'd never be able to go without you this long." He admits, running his fingers up and down your arm softly lulling you into a complete state of relaxation.
"Luckily you never will," You giggle, leaning up and kissing him softly on the lips.
Tumblr media
Concert Prep
Backstage before the next concert, Yoongi was stretching, loosening up for the performance, doing all of his vocal warm-ups while someone attached his microphone to his chest. You were behind him, camera in hand, capturing every detail of his pre-show ritual, smiling to yourself at him. When he first started he was too nervous to do all of this alone but as the concerts went by you saw his confidence growing more and more.
“Do I look okay?” he asks, turning around suddenly, giving you a mock-serious look. You zoom in on his face with the camera, teasing him and giggling wildly.
“You look like you’re about to destroy this stage, so yeah, I think you’re good.” You giggle keeping your real compliments for when he was off the stage and off camera later. He laughs softly, tugging at his jacket. The camera wobbles as you go to fix the collar for him, your touch lingering on his shoulders, your eyes staring into his as you smile brightly at him. For a moment, the two of you share a quiet glance, your eyes dancing between each other with unspoken words. You don’t notice the camera still recording as you step closer, brushing a stray hair away from his eyes.
“Thanks,” he says, voice lower, more intimate. The sound of the crew bustling around you fades as your fingers linger on his cheek for just a second too long.
“You’ve got this, baby. I promise,” you whisper, giving him a reassuring smile before stepping back to capture the rest of the backstage prep.
When you eventually checked the footage back later that night, you realize the camera had caught the entire exchange—every touch, every glance, and the love that’s evident between the two of you. Fans are going to go crazy for this.
Tumblr media
The final concert of the D-Day tour felt completely different to every single other moment on the tour. The energy in the air is electric, yet there's a bittersweetness in knowing that this incredible journey is coming to an end. Yoongi stands on stage, drenched in sweat, his eyes scanning the thousands of cheering fans. He smiles that small, quiet smile you know so well—the one that says everything without words.
Backstage, you were already there capturing his final moments before he disappeared behind the curtain. You couldn't have been prouder of him for all of this and you'd felt incredible to be bought on along the way.
When Yoongi finally walks off the stage, his gaze immediately finds yours. He strides toward you with a giant smile on his face, his usual calm exterior cracking just a little as the enormity of the night hits him.
“It’s over,” he murmurs, pulling you into a tight embrace. You wrap your arms around him, feeling the warmth of his body and the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It felt bittersweet to him. Part of him was glad all of this was over but he was going to miss being able to perform on stage.
“You did it,” you whisper into his ear, kissing his temple softly and giggling at him as he blushed a little. You didn't care that he was covered in sweat, you were too happy to care.
“I’m so proud of you.” Yoongi pulls back slightly, his eyes searching yours as he smiles brightly.
“I couldn’t have done it without you." Your heart stutters at his words. He'd said stuff like this before but you couldn't help the way your heart fluttered each and every single time. Before you can respond, Yoongi glances down at the camera in your hands, his mind ticking as he smirks to himself. He chuckles softly, taking it from you and flipping it on. The red recording light flickers to life as he points it at you.
“What are you doing?” you laugh, trying to hide behind your hands, but he doesn’t let you, he shakes his head and keeps the view on you.
“Finishing the vlog,” he says simply, his voice gentle.
“The fans need to see the most important part of the tour.” He smirks at you and you lower your hands, feeling your face flush as he keeps the camera trained on you.
“Yoongi…” you start, but he interrupts,
“You.” His voice is so full of love, that it’s almost overwhelming. To him, you were the most important part of all of this. There was no way he would have been able to do all of this without you cheering him on from the sidelines.
“They need to see you. You’ve been here for every show, every moment. You’ve kept me going.” He lowers the camera and pulls you back into his arms. This time, neither of you cared that the camera was still rolling, capturing the moment as you stood there, wrapped in each other. It’s real, unfiltered, and the perfect way to close out this chapter of your lives together. The camera continues to record, Yoongi presses a kiss to your forehead, and for a moment, the world fades away. It’s just the two of you, in your own little bubble, as it’s always been.
Tumblr media
Later, when you sit down to edit the final vlog, you leave that moment in, knowing it’s exactly what the fans will love: a raw, unguarded glimpse into your relationship. You upload it with a simple title: Thank you.
Within minutes, the comments flood in, filled with love, support, and admiration for both of you, something that made your heart flutter. Fans from all around the world thank Yoongi for the tour, for his music—and for sharing a piece of his heart through the vlogs. But what touches you most are the comments directed at your relationship:
Suga96: "They’re perfect together."
JinsLeftiris: "This is the kind of love we all dream about."
Jiminismywrecker "You can see how much they love each other. It’s beautiful." Yoongi leans over your shoulder, reading the comments with a smile, kissing your shoulder softly and chuckling as he looks at them.
“They’re right, you know.” He tells you with a knowing smirk.
“About what?” you ask, turning to look at him, your lips catching his quickly as he chuckled.
“We’re perfect together.” He said before kissing you softly, making you giggle against him.

chpt. 1: new digs
september 16, 2004
If this job has taught you one thing, it’s that the laws of truth can and will be bent by anyone with enough concentrated effort. People come to you to find very specific truths; birth parents, cheating spouses, the details of shady business deals.
But if this job has taught you one thing, it's that the truth will also reveal itself to anyone with enough concentrated effort.
Though, there's always a handful of cases that force you to delve deep into things you’d rather leave buried. Like the person in Oregon who didn't show up in any photographs. Or the small town in Maryland with the strange, centuries-old secret society.
You’ve seen sides of human nature that have left you cynical, distrusting. Some have called you “dead inside,” but you’re not here to brag. Naturally, you are excellent at your job.
And when the Mayor of Farrow’s End, a sleepy town with enough missing persons cases to warrant a Netflix documentary, contacted you about a possible case, you accepted almost instantly.
Even her first correspondence and initial offer were strange. She stated a preference to discuss the finer details in person and in person only, which to you immediately suggested that the entire investigation would be a matter of confidentiality.
You were proven right when you met with her a week later. And while being proven right is usually one of your favorite things, you didn’t exactly expect this.
The offer: investigative services regarding (but not limited to) local missing persons/homicides, ecological disturbances, environmental chemical imbalances. etc.
In exchange for: monthly salary, rent support, covered business expenses.
And above all, everything must remain off the books.
The salary along with the rent support is very generous considering what you're used to, but you don’t tell the Mayor that. You do inform her that, while you wear many hats, you are not an ecologist, nor a chemist.
Mayor Summerbee, a middle-aged Asian woman with a sweet smile and even warmer eyes, informs you that you will have access to the local University’s college of natural sciences. She gives you the contact information for one Min Yoongi, a botanist who works in the school's research department.
Then she gives you the contact information for one Kim Taehyung, the town coroner and pathologist. Apparently, both of them will be available for consultation.
She is eager, maybe even desperate, smiling at you with an urgent sheen in her eyes.
When you accept her offer, shaking her hand with your usual firm grip, she seems to exhale in relief.
You move to Farrow’s End by the end of the week. It’s not as if you have much to move, just a trunkful of books and a handful of duffel bags. You’ve always moved around for work, and even if you didn’t, staying in one place for too long makes you nervous.
Your bags hit the pavement beside your boots as you survey your new home. It's a small, quaint house. The paint is faded but the architectural structure is sturdy. Two bedrooms, one bathroom, kitchen, living room. The whole place is in a slight state of disrepair, but you can't complain.
You spend the next day cleaning and unpacking, which doesn't take long since you leave most of your books in the trunk. You're exploring the town by the end of the afternoon.
The town square, though full of shops and businesses, is nearly barren. A few civilians putter around, their faces weathered and reflective of the gloom in the air. They stare at you as you pass by, a cocktail of curiosity and slight suspicion.
The next thing you notice is the posters. They're everywhere, on the crumbling brick walls, stuck on lampposts, taped to the windows, all displaying a variety of subjects. Events at the University, local night markets, antiques for sale.
But there are a few that stick out. THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE LAKE! Sign the petition to restrict land access →
HAVING STRANGE DREAMS? You're not alone, contact a psychic today!
BEWARE! DO NOT FEED LOCAL WILDLIFE.
Though, what's more strange to you is what you don't see. There are barely any missing person posters, and the few that you do see appear to have been ripped away.
Work begins now, you think to yourself as you snap some photos of several posters, flapping in the cold wind.
You pop into the general store to pick up some essentials, and the store clerk immediately recognizes that you're not a local.
He asks where you're from, you reply with the standard answer: a city not too far but not too close. He asks what you're doing here, you reply with the standard answer: you're a journalist. You add in the suggestion that you're working with the University about a story, and he doesn't question any further.
You're not sure if it's because he takes the hint or because he loses interest.
During the drive home, you notice something looming in the distance. Atop the highest hill is a dark house, with spires and towers rising from the tops of spindly trees. Even from here, you can see that the architecture is old and ornate, almost ancient in a hypnotic way. You're fairly certain you can see a murder of crows circling above.
An unusual feeling hangs around the house, like there's some kind of aura surrounding it. Welcoming some, yet blocking others.
Very strange indeed.
You spend the rest of the night huddled next to the fireplace, using the flickering orange light to skim over newspaper clippings.
No, the house does not have a heating system. But you don't mind too much, you have plenty of wood and warm clothes.
Five missing and three dead in the last year. Local law enforcement has done everything they could with what they had to work with, which apparently wasn't much. Scattered locations, no visible connection between the victims, and an alarming lack of evidence.
Eyelids heavy, you leave the papers scattered across the floor and head to bed, already looking forward to tomorrow's first coffee.

september 17, 2004
The University appears to be just as old as the rest of the town. Original wood, aged stone, curved iron accents. The brick walkway is slick with morning rain, and the sky is swirling with fog.
Perfect weather, it makes you ready to get to work.
The directory stated that Min Yoongi would be in Montgomery Hall, the natural sciences building, either in the greenhouse or in one of the labs, according to the TA you talked to earlier on the phone.
It takes some wandering, but what you like about this place is that people don't seem to notice your presence as much as they do in town. Out there, you're an easily identifiable outsider. Here, you're just another passerby with a purpose.
You find him in one of the lab rooms, tucked into a little nook that's encased with plastic sheeting, dotted with beads of moisture. The small space is crowded with greenery, big pots of tall plants with fanning leaves, draping vines from wall planters, seedlings in little trays.
Through the condensation dripping down the plastic walls, you can see that he's spraying the plants down with water, wearing a classic white coat.
You're indulging in your bad habit again. Your footsteps are notoriously quiet (you've been told), and you (apparently) have a tendency to sneak up on people and observe them for several minutes before they notice that you are there.
But it's a skill you delight in.
The man is of average height, thin, black hair, delicate features. You notice that the soles of his boots are caked with mud, and his skin is dewy from the humidifiers pumping moisture into the room.
"You already know my opinion on this," you hear him say, muffled by the spray of the water.
For a moment, you think he's talking to you, that he's rejecting your case before you've even presented it to him. But he isn't facing you, and his tone is decidedly casual, like he's talking to an old friend.
"It's bad for the others, anyway," he continues. "Don't wiggle your trigger hairs at me like that."
A pause, the water flow stops. Then a sigh of defeat.
"Fine, one puff. Then you quit pouting, got it?"
There's the sound of shuffling, then the fwick of a lighter being ignited.
Your curiosity gets the better of you, and you step forward to peer through the slit in the plastic sheeting.
There's a Venus fly trap on one of the shelves, and between the jaws of one of the trap mouths, is a lit cigarette.
The man's head piques up when you enter his field of vision. Eyes widening, he looks like a cat that's been caught off guard.
He looks between you and the plant several times. You're fairly certain you see the tip of the cigarette glow ember, as if the plant were actually inhaling.
The man snatches the cigarette away and crushes it beneath the wet sole of his boot.
"Nasty habit," he finally says with a nervous chuckle. An awkward, straight-mouthed smile crosses his face, making his cheeks puff out slightly.
"Min Yoongi?" you ask.
"Yes, ma'am," he responds politely.
"I'm ______," you say, holding out a hand to shake.
He shuffles forward, his cold slim fingers meeting yours.
"Ah, the mayor mentioned that you'd be around."
That throws you a bit, because from what you've gathered about this case, you assumed that the mayor didn't want to be associated with it.
"Yes, would you mind filling me in on some of the ecological disturbances that have been going on in town?"
It's as if the question sends ants crawling down his spine. His neutral smile dissipates into an anxious twitch of his lips. He turns the hose back on and resumes spritzing the plants.
"What do you want to know?" he asks, a new tension in his voice.
Odd.
"Well," you start, "The mayor tells me that locals have been complaining about strange mushrooms invading their yards, increased acidity in their soil. Would you know anything about that?"
His eyebrows are knitted as he dampens the leaves of a spiraling fern.
"Mushrooms are really just the fruit of fungi, they bloom like flowers when the conditions are just right. Moisture, shade, an abundance of organic material, stuff like that. When it comes to the acidity, there's a variety of factors. All the rainfall recently leads to leaching, and the increased use of fertilizers causes nitrification. It's pretty standard."
You raise an eyebrow. He's deflecting.
"People have been saying that these mushrooms have been particularly hard to get rid of."
Yoongi 's brows furrow as if he's thinking hard.
"Fungi are tricky like that. We don't know much about them, really. They're their own class of life form. It could be a particularly stubborn strain."
"There's also been some unusual plant growth, creeping vines or the like. Very resistant to herbicides, apparently."
He pauses, considers it.
"Hmm," he mutters, the nozzle of the hose going lax in his hand.
“Also,” you continue, trying to further engage his curiosity. “There's been several cases of strange root rot?”
You add a questioning tone to your voice, gauging his reaction. Apparently, he hasn’t heard about it, because he looks up at you with the same question in his eyes.
“Root rot? In household plants?” he asks.
“No, in residencies.”
Yoongi stares at you for a moment, and you can tell he’s intrigued.
“I would benefit a lot from your knowledge, if I could just bring you a few samples, maybe go out and do some fieldwork—”
“You wouldn’t like working with me,” Yoongi interrupts. “I’m very…particular.”
You have a feeling the word is meant as a substitute for something else.
“Wonderful, so am I,” you reply, digging one of the many notebooks out of your bag. Flipping to the calendar, you click open your open your pen and start scribbling.
“Mornings are best, get the most out of the daylight. Make sure to bring your equipment and something to write on, and a camera if you have one.”
“Wait, I just don’t know if I’m going to be much use to you,” Yoongi says a little nervously, sticking his hands in his pockets.
You pause your scribbling to look at him. He’s pale in the fluorescent light, but not just physically. He has pale mannerisms and pale expressions, the countenance of a person that doesn’t feel as if they belong.
You know the feeling well.
“Coffee is always on me. How do you like it?” you say instead.
“Does Wednesday work?”
Tumblr media
september 18, 2004
Three dead and five missing in less than six months. First, Michael Bradley, aged forty-two. Cause of death: chronic poisoning/exposure to toxic chemicals. He was found in his garage surrounded by household cleaners and herbicides. Apparently he’d been trying to get rid of the same strange mushrooms in his yard.
For now, all you have to work with is what they’ve published in the newspapers, and it seems that all that's come out of it is a public service announcement warning homeowners to be careful around toxic chemicals. His wife, Mary Bradley, hasn't commented on the circumstances of her husband’s death. And no one else has inquired any further into the matter.
Until today, obviously. Mrs. Bradley didn't answer her phone, and when you knocked on her door earlier this morning, she seemed less than pleased.
You opened with the standard introduction: I'm a journalist working on a story, would you mind consenting to an interview? Mrs. Bradley narrowed her eyes and scanned you up and down with barely concealed suspicion.
She asked what a journalist would find interesting about a common, accidental death in a small town. Apparently, the citizens of Farrow's End are very perceptive to outsiders.
You mentioned that fact that although Bradley's death appeared accidental, it's not common for people to die at the hands of household chemicals from prolonged exposure. Chronic poisoning is rarely without symptoms, why didn't he go to hospital?
She didn't have anything to say to that. You asked if she'd be comfortable divulging some of the details of his death, maybe even giving you access to the autopsy report. But she just grimaced at the mention, insisting that she had nothing to say about the matter and that you should leave right away.
She slammed the door in your face, but luckily it wasn't the first time people have resisted your questions. Unfortunately, a significant part of your job involves being a pain in the ass.
You linger in the front yard, where it's impossible not to notice the gnarled tree stumps and large rings of mushrooms scattered across the lawn.
You're not a mycologist by any means, but even you can tell that these mushrooms are strange. They seem to be multicolored, red and orange and brown, changing depending on the light like a hologram, but without any of the shine. They aren't bulb-shaped like many other mushrooms, but twist in tendrils this way and that, stretching.
And a smell hangs about them. You can't really describe it, something like damp and musk and old meat. Standing there, breathing them in, for too long makes your head spin.
And the trees, or rather, what's left of them. Nothing but stumps now, but you can tell that they were old when they were cut down. There's that same multi-colored effect to them, except it runs in veins throughout the tree's bark, spiraling into the rings.
You'll have to ask Yoongi about it.
Curiosity nips at you like a non-venomous snake even after you're home. It's not deadly, but it sure as hell is annoying.
What kind of disease infects fungi and trees? Why would the mayor care about privately investigating such a thing? And a thousand other questions.
You shove your boots on and enter back into the chill. You remember seeing a bookstore in town.
Tumblr media
The Magic Shop: Books and Oddities
The front window glows with warm light, crowded with displayed volumes and curiosities (a stuffed raven, a jar of yellowing teeth, insects encased in amber).
The door swings open with the ring of a bell. Someone calls out "Welcome in," in a deep-velvet voice.
The smell of parchment and aged leather envelopes you like a familiar hug. You can't help pausing in the doorway and inhaling deeply. No matter what city you're in, places like this always feel like home.
It's everything that a bookstore should be: crowded, mysterious, and slightly dusty. The shelves are tightly grouped and arranged like a labyrinth few are privy to, and stacks—no, towers—of books occupy every corner.
You enter into the space, feet padding on the braided rugs, eyes drinking in the details. There are labels on the shelves, haphazardly spaced. They start normal enough: gardening, self-help, adventure.
But then you realize that they branch off into even more labels, or rather sub-labels. There's nocturnal gardening, gardening under the influence, Faerie gardens and goblin gardens. Each labeled sub-genre branches into even more specific sub-categories, creating a seemingly endless array of subjects.
You could explore this place for hours. In fact, you intend to over the course of your stay in Farrow's End.
You spend an indeterminate amount of time exploring all the labels and categories. The shelves twist this way and that, creating little nooks where the occasional armchair is tucked into.
Eventually, you come to a more open area with a wide-sprawling desk. The man sitting behind it is tall and tan, glasses perched on his nose, with short chestnut hair that shifts golden in the candlelight.
He's deeply focused on the book in his hands: A Comprehensive Guide to Navigating Parallel Universes and Pocket Dimensions.
Typically, you hate to bother people in a bookstore, especially if they're already reading. It's supposed to be a space for quiet reflection, for self-exploration and uninterrupted browsing. But you still have a job to do, and it's clear that you won't be able to navigate the complicated system yourself. At least, not in a concise period of time.
So you square your shoulders and prepare yourself to address the (handsome, you notice) man at the counter.
"Excuse me," you begin in a hushed voice.
The man's head whips up, as if he completely forgot there was another person here.
"Yes?" He says in that same deep voice, friendly and eager. "Do you need help finding something?" It sounds like he can't quite believe the fact. This place must not get many customers.
"Yes, if you don't mind."
His face lights up as if nothing would delight him more.
"Do you have anything on unusual mushrooms?" you ask.
The man sets down his book and slips out from behind the desk. "Hmm..." he mumbles to himself, expertly weaving between the shelves while you hurry to catch up.
"Let's see here..." he says, passing a wall draped with vines from a hanging planter, like the ones in Yoongi's lab, you notice.
"Fungi," he mutters, fingertips ghosting over the shelves. The sections under Fungi are vast and wide-ranging. Poisons & Antidotes, Moss & Lichens, Carnivorous, Aberrations.
He pauses at that last one, eyes flitting between the volumes.
"Anything specific?" he asks.
You debate on how much to disclose, but with the several cases of strange fungi in people's yards, it's probably common small town knowledge by now.
"Anything about an unusual fungus with...tendrils?" You can't help the hesitation, you're not sure if it's a common feature among mushrooms.
Apparently, it's not as unusual as you thought, because the man only nods and shifts his attention to one of the lower shelves. His slim fingers finally land on an old cloth-bound book with a red toadstool on the spine. There's no title on the cover, but the man seems to be familiar with it.
"Here you go," he says, handing it to you. "I think you'll find what you're looking for in this one."
He says it with the confidence of someone who's read every book in the building front to back. A very specific part of your brain tells you that this fact is almost certainly true.
"Thank you very much," you say, turning the book over in your hands.
"My pleasure," he replies, and means it.
"How much?"
He guides you back to the counter and rings it up for a very good price.
You're itching to ask questions, but you're not sure where to start.
The man places the book into a brown paper bag printed with Magic Shop Books and Oddities and hands it to you with a warm smile.
You lose your nerve and take the bag in silence. Then, as if he could smell the fragmented thoughts darting around in your skull, he says, "Be careful in the woods."
You look at him. There's the same friendly smile, but now with a hint of good-natured curiosity.
"If you're going mushroom hunting, I mean," he adds.
You stare at him for perhaps too long.
"Thanks," you say, dropping a generous tip into the jar next to the register.
"Hope to see you again," he calls out as you exit through the front door.
Tumblr media
A moth to flame, bees to honey. Insert: you to coffee shops with perfect ambient lighting. You spot it just as you're leaving the narrow alley that leads to the bookshop.
Turning the corner onto a cobblestone walkway, you catch sight of the cafe windows, slick with the recent rain. But from what you can see through the glass, it looks like a warm, cozy place.
Glancing at the front door, you notice an OPEN sign, even though it's quite late. You're opening the door and stepping inside before you're even conscious of it.
The interior reflects the same aged aesthetic as the exterior, dark wood and brick and brass accents. But the kitchen area houses clean chrome appliances, and there are shelves stacked with white dishes behind them. Golden light warms a glass case fully stocked with a manner of pastries, breads, and other nibbles, all of which still seem to be steaming hot.
You immediately decide that you like this place.
"Good evening," a pleasant voice calls, though you can't yet identify the speaker.
The smell of steam and freshly-ground coffee beans becomes richer as you approach the counter. You can hear someone puttering around in the back room.
You glance at the menu's wide selection, and when you look back at the counter, a man is standing right in front of you.
You don't scare easily, but it's enough to make you jump a little.
"What can I get you?" the man asks cheerfully. He's tall and slim, wearing a white button-up and black slacks under an apron. Brown hair, dark eyes, and a full smiling mouth.
You order a coffee and a pastry.
"What time do you close?" you ask, wanting to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere but also not wanting to be the asshole that settles in just before closing.
"On Wednesdays we close at noon, otherwise we're open twenty-four hours," he replies, sounding delighted by rather than annoyed by the fact.
A twenty-four hour coffee shop? You really like this place.
He must see your eyebrows raise in surprise, because then he proudly adds, "Only one in town."
Pleasantly surprised, you look around the shop to assess the seating options. There are booths tucked along the walls, a few tables and chairs, and a few plush-looking armchairs near the windows.
"Please, have a seat and make yourself at home. I enjoy the company," the man says as he makes your drink.
You take him up on it, settling into one of the chairs by the frosted glass of the window. It's then that you take a closer look at the book the shop owner recommended.
A fraying cloth-bound cover, a red toadstool instead of a title. Inside, a table of contents. First, a bit of basic mycology, which you greatly benefit from. Immediately after, a range of mutations, circumstances, and environmental factors that caused the direct disturbance to said mycology.
You get lost in it quite easily, sipping your drink (which is expertly brewed) and nibbling your pastry (which is almost too delicious for words). You know that you'll be spending a considerable amount of time here throughout your stay in Farrow's End.
The book cites several case studies, all suggesting that a new strain of fungus is not only spreading rapidly, but infecting all other strains it has access to.
You read on, only momentarily distracted by the occasional customers that enter into the establishment. Like the group of students, most likely from the University, who order a large batch of espresso to-go. Or the old man who orders a sandwich and black coffee and sits outside despite the late-night chill.
You don't realize it, but you read on until the early morning. The first few faint, pale rays of sunlight stretch across your current page through the window, and you jerk to attention when you realize what time it is.
Not that you have somewhere in particular to be today. But you've always liked to get a jump on things early on in the investigation. And you have better luck getting interviews during the day.
You had no idea that time was passing so quickly. This place seems to have an air of particular tranquility, the kind that only a handful of coffee shops are able to achieve. It's the feeling of finding a quiet place after being overstimulated for hours.
You take your dishes to the counter, drop a tip into the jar, and step into the morning chill.
Exhaustion sets in on the journey home, and you crash moments after your head hits the pillow.
The dreams start that night.

Here is the first part! There will end up being a second chapter.
CEO Yoongi x Female Barista/College Student Reader
Title: Cold Brewed Love
Summary: When you begged the owner of Jin’s Java House to hire more employees you didn’t mean for him to stick you with the cold, rude, arrogant CEO Min Yoongi. Over time something begins to brew between you both and you end up forced to make decisions way above the pay grade of a cafe barista.
Warnings: Angst, swearing, hints of smut(nothing explicit), Yoongi is mean but we all know he’ll turn fluffy later, violence, kidnapping, mention of a gun
Word Count: 6,934
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
You walked into work today at Jin’s Java House filled with dread at the situation. Lately things had been a nightmare there and you definitely didn’t get paid enough to put up with it. The only reason you hadn’t quit like everyone else was because the owner Jin was very flexible with your schedule and would accommodate your college schedule around your shifts, plus he let you have unlimited free coffee and snacks any time you wanted which really helped your already small bank account.
Your plan was to only work here a few months until something better came along, but now here you were two years later still at the same position as a barista at a coffee shop in the lobby of the largest office building in your city. It got your bills paid and you figured once you graduated college soon you could move on elsewhere.
After you clocked in Jin asked you to meet him in the office so you followed along hoping for good news.
“Y/N this is Jungkook. He’s the new employee I was telling you about. Please make sure he gets up and running before you move to the evening shift.”, he said before walking away to answer a phone call.
“Hi”, Jungkook nervously smiled.
“Hi”, you smiled back, “So the easiest thing to learn would be the register so we will start there.”, you said motioning for him to follow.
Thankfully he was a pretty fast learner. After just about an hour of you showing him the register he was already taking some orders by himself which you were very grateful for and thought maybe things were finally starting to look up.
After the morning rush you were just mindlessly wiping down the counter when Jungkook walked over to you.
“Who is that?”, he asked almost in awe.
You rolled your eyes after quickly recognizing the man walking by in his perfectly tailored suit and slicked back hair with a piece that fell perfectly against his forehead, “That’s Min Yoongi. He’s the CEO of MYG INC.”
“Wow he’s beautiful.”, Jungkook whispered.
You chuckled, “Yeah unfortunately his personality doesn’t match his appearance.”
You braced yourself for a fight with him, but thankfully it seemed like Yoongi was going to pass on the coffee today and headed straight for the elevators instead.
“I take it you’ve had some bad experiences with him?”, Jungkook asked.
“Yeah you could say that”.
You and Yoongi have a difficult history. You are about the same age, but he runs a successful billion dollar company while you make coffee for barely above minimum wage and also take classes at the local college which makes you feel intimidated by him and maybe even a little jealous. And he knows that.
His order was the first one you had ever made. Not only were you nervous because it was your first time, but he was also one of the most handsome men you had ever seen and you developed almost an instant crush on him. You were so nervous in fact that you dropped his cup of coffee making it spill all over the counter and right onto his expensive leather shoes. He was quick to reprimand you to the point his assistant Hoseok stepped in and pulled him away from the counter while giving you an apologetic smile. Hoseok returned later that day to apologize for his boss’ actions and offered to buy you lunch from the neighboring Thai restaurant.
Then just a few months later you had been asked by Jin to take up several cases of pastries to Yoongi’s office for some big meeting they were having. After you placed everything in the break room you quickly moved trying to hurry back down to the cafe to help out your co-worker who was working alone during the breakfast rush in your absence when in your haste you turned and ran right into Yoongi causing the stack of documents he was holding to fly everywhere through the office. He had a scowl and some choice words for you once again while you crawled around on your hands and knees trying to reorganize the mess and not cry in front of him. Hoseok was quick to save you then too and that’s how your friendship with ‘Hobi’ started.
Ever since that day though, Yoongi was always rude to you while ordering his coffee. He purposely got your name wrong even though it was right on your name tag. He hardly ever looked up from his phone and if he did it was only to look down on you and try to make you feel small. You hated him. But you hated it even more that no matter how much you hated him you couldn’t abolish the little crush you had on him. He was easily one of, if not your least favorite customer to deal with and you couldn’t ever see that changing.
A few weeks go by and thankfully Jungkook was getting faster and faster, but at the end of the day he was still on the newer side. Jin hired two more people, Jimin and Taehyung but they weren’t going to be starting for another week. Taehyung was going to work mornings with Jungkook and Jimin was going to work the evening shift with you. Today was your last morning shift because your classes started in a couple days so you begged Jin for a few days off to relax and reset which he approved after convincing his sister to come help out at the cafe for a few days.
Jungkook was manning the register as usual since he was much more of people person than you were while you worked away at making the orders.
It was a particularly busy day, worse than usual. There was a huge conference being held in one of the offices bringing in lots of out of town customers as well as your regulars. Jungkook was doing his best to take orders on his own leaving you to have to do all of the prep and stocking as well as make everything ordered.
You stared out at the sea of people letting out a sigh before returning back to the drink you were working on.
You were making a particularly difficult drink when Jungkook nervously stepped up next to you. “Y/N there is a customer at the register that wants to speak to the manager.”, he whispered.
You technically weren’t a manager, but you were the closest there was so you made a mental note to talk to Jin about a promotion and a raise before taking a deep breath to steady your nerves.
“Please hand this drink to order 613. I’ll handle the complaint.”, you said before grabbing a few free drink coupons as an apology.
Stepping up to the counter you felt your stomach twist at the sight. This wasn’t going to be any normal complaint. Not only did you have to apologize for something out of your control, but you had to apologize to your least favorite customer, Mr. Min Yoongi.
He didn’t even give you a chance to speak before he started, “The wait time is ridiculous. There is no reason that it should take nearly twenty-five minutes in line to get a mediocre cup of coffee.”
“I know Sir. I apologize. It’s just Jungkook and I and he’s still pretty new. We’re trying our best.”
“Clearly your best is not good enough. I don’t know how you can get any lower than a measly coffee maker, but maybe you should try something else.”
“Again I apologize Sir. Here are some coupons for free drinks and I’ll make sure to speak with the owner about improving our processes.”, you said still trying to be professional.
He scoffed, “Do I look like I need coupons for a free drink?“
“No, but there is not much else I can offer you. I apologize for the long wait, but as I said we’re trying our best.”
“Do better because this is unacceptable.”, he spat before leaving his coffee and walking way.
At that point the wall you built up crumbled and tears began to fall freely.
“Hey go in the back and take a few. I’ll be okay.”, Jungkook said.
“No it’s okay. I have to make the orders.”
“Y/N, go. I’ll be okay. I’ll make some of the drinks that I know and then ones I don’t I’ll just wing it. I mean they can’t get any more upset than they already are so what’s a wrong drink going to do.”, he chuckled.
You nodded and walked to the back for a few minutes.
You couldn’t believe the audacity of Yoongi. Like sure the wait times were terrible, but it’s not like he couldn’t afford to just order coffee from somewhere else or send Hobi to get it. You felt like he purposely just wanted to ruin your day and that hurt more than it should have.
After taking a small break you returned to the front thankful that Jungkook had everything taken care of. It seemed like most of the line left after Yoongi’s spectacle and you walking away so there were only a few people left.
“See I told you I could handle it.”, Jungkook smiled as he was clearly making the wrong drink, but judging by the puppy dog eyes the girl at the counter was giving him you didn’t think she’d really care anyways.
“Thank you Kookie. That break really helped.”, you said giving his arm a squeeze.
When your shift finally ended you said goodbye to Jungkook and left for home. Exhausted you plopped down on your couch taking out your phone.
You: Is your boss PMSing or something? He was an even bigger jerk than normal today.
Hobi: Ohhh that’s probably what he was mumbling about when he got in.
You: What?
Hobi: Nothing, it’s nothing. Yeah sorry about him. He’s trying to close this really important deal or something. He always gets like this when he’s working on that. Plus I think his parents are on his case about something.
You: Well he should learn to keep his emotions to himself before he really hurts someone.
Hobi: I thought you said he was an emotionless robot…
You: 😑
Your mini vacation was much needed especially after your latest Yoongi encounter, but it went by way too fast for your liking. Classes started up again and they were already kicking your ass. You moved to the evening shift at work which was a nice change of pace. It was a little slower than the mornings and although you missed Jungkook you were getting along great with Jimin.
Earlier today Jin had texted you to let you know a new employee would be starting at night. He didn’t give you much info other than he’d only be working part time and you were oddly warned not to have sex in the office because this guy was apparently super hot. You were just excited to get another worker so maybe you could eventually reduce your hours a little and take some of the stress off so you weren’t going to complain.
Your shift was going by extremely slow so you had your back to the counter as you wiped down one of the old machines trying to accomplish something for the day. From behind you someone cleared their throat making you jump a little.
“Hi welcome to Jin’s Java House how can I help you today?”
You stopped in your tracks feeling your heart speed up, “M-Mr.Min?”, you asked.
He rolled his eyes before grabbing an apron from the rack.
“Uh Mr. Min?”, you questioned.
He looked more pissed off than ever.
“Y/N”, he said finally looking at your name tag, “I guess I am your new coworker for the next several weeks. Maybe I’ll be able to to come up with a better system to solve the slow service around here.”
“Umm uh sir? W-what do you mean coworker?”
He rolled his eyes again, “Obviously I mean we are working together.”
“I know what a coworker is. My question is why is a successful billionaire ceo working at a coffee shop for minimum wage?”
“Because my lovely parents think I need to learn some humility and how to talk to people other than just demanding things. They said I do this or they’re removing me from the company so I have no choice.”, he said picking at some lint on his shirt.
“So I’m working here for a little. I figured if anyone knows some humbleness it’s a nobody coffee maker.”
Being the reliable hard worker you are you sucked it up, “Okay sir. The easiest thing is to learn the register first.”
He followed you over to where the computer was located.
“Okay so this row is the specials. This row is basic coffees. Then when you select a coffee it asks if you want to add any thing. That’s where you’ll find the flavorings and toppings. This row is cold drinks. This row is baked goods.”
You noticed he was very quiet so when you looked up you weren’t surprised to see him staring at some blond in a very short pencil skirt sitting at one of the cafe tables. It did make you feel a sting of jealousy, but you quickly shook that away.
“Are you even listening?”, you questioned.
“Y/N, I run a billion dollar company. I think I can figure out a few buttons on a computer screen at a coffee shop.”, he smirked.
“Okay, here’s your first customer.”, you smiled as Mrs. Kang walked up to the counter. She was a familiar regular who was notoriously difficult and you couldn’t wait to watch Yoongi crash and burn.
“Hi, welcome to Jin’s Java House, how can I help you?”, he greeted her as cocky as ever.
“Sure can I get a medium coffee with two pumps of hazelnut, half a pump of vanilla but make sure it’s only half a pump. Last time they definitely put too much. I want the coffee fresh brewed but a mix of the house blend and the cinnamon nut. Then also add a caramel swirl and use half oat milk half almond milk that is warmed up so it doesn’t cool the coffee too much. I also want a banana nut muffin on the side but warm it up also.”
You felt a deep sense of happiness as you watched Yoongi’s fingers hover over the buttons unsure of how to complete the order. Reluctantly he looked at you for assistance.
You showed him how to type in the order while Jimin got to work making it.
That was definitely a humbling experience for Yoongi who was much more open to help after that.
The following few weeks flew by between your classes and shifts at the coffee shop. You and Yoongi were working surprisingly well together. He was actually a decent worker and wasn’t as insufferable to be around.
“Y/N please stop calling me Sir.”, he said one evening.
“I’m sorry it’s just a habit.”
“Well please just call me Yoongi. Sir is reserved for other things.”, he smirked.
You quickly turned away hoping to hide your blushing cheeks from him.
He even apologized for always treating you so coldly, especially that one day he made you run in the back and cry. He chuckled saying Hobi heard him ranting about how much of an idiot he was. He said he came down later in the day to apologize, but you were already gone and he said it bothered him ever since. There was a small shift in your relationship after that.
He had texted you earlier today to let you know that he was going out and wouldn’t be working tonight which kind of made you feel a little as as you had grown to look forward to working with him.
“I strive to be like him one day. Rich, successful, good looking, always having a hot woman on my arm.”, Jimin sighed.
You spun around just in time to see Yoongi walking through the lobby towards the door with the pencil skirt blonde tightly clinging to his arm as he licked his lips while looking down at her.
You don’t know what you expected when he said he was going out or why that sight made your chest tighten, but you quickly returned to portioning out coffee beans so Jimin wouldn’t see your eyes watering.
Maybe you were naive or just had too much wishful thinking, but you had really thought that maybe there was a small chance Yoongi was starting to like you too. You noticed his gaze lingering a little longer than it used it. How he’d “accidentally” bump into you or brush his fingers against your skin. How he started showing up a little earlier every shift and would immediately make his way over to you. But apparently it was all in your head. The more you thought about it the more you felt silly for thinking someone like him could ever be interested in someone like you. So you spent the rest of the shift trying to keep your thoughts away from what Yoongi was up to.
After last night you were thankful it was Saturday because Yoongi never worked weekends which meant you could avoid him for a couple days.
Unfortunately for you, luck was not on your side because when you arrived for your shift Yoongi was already behind the counter.
You faked a smile as you rounded the counter to grab your apron with Yoongi following behind with a red drink in his hands.
“I got you a smoothie from that health place down the street.”
You looked at him confused.
“I just thought you might be sick of coffee.”, he said feeling self conscious all of a sudden for some reason.
“Oh thank you. I’m sorry. I just wasn’t expecting you to be working today.”, you said taking the drink from him.
Shyly he scratched the back of his neck, “Oh yeah I figured since I couldn’t work yesterday I’d pick up a few hours tonight.”
You nodded before clocking in and heading over to wipe down the already clean counter just to avoid him. Being around him made you feel so confused and conflicted and you didn’t have it in you to deal with that right now.
“How was your date last night? She was hot. I bet you had a good time with her.”, Jimin smirked as he handed Yoongi a cup to fill.
You happened to look up noticing Yoongi quickly turn away from you, but you didn’t miss the slight blush on his cheeks.
He turned back to Jimin, “Yeah she was alright.”
“You gonna see her again? Does she have any single friends or maybe a hot older sister?”
You rolled your eyes before walking away not really wanting to hear Yoongi’s answer anyways.
As days went on you got over Yoongi and the pencil skirt incident until it was Friday and yet again Yoongi texted you that he couldn’t work because he would be going out.
Before he left the office he stopped over at the coffee shop.
As much as you wanted to you couldn’t stop staring. He looked good. His suit jacket was thrown over his shoulder. The sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up giving you a great view of his hands and forearms that you weirdly loved. His hair was messily styled after the gel gave out from hours of work. As he walked up to the counter you were hit with the scent of his cologne, a comforting cinnamon and vanilla that made you think of eating Christmas cookies by the fire place.
“I thought you were going out?”, you asked sounding more hurt than you wanted.
“Meeting that hot blonde again?”, Jimin asked wiggling his eyebrows.
Yoongi chuckled, “No not tonight. I’m just meeting my parents for dinner at that new sushi place everyone’s talking about. I thought I’d stop by and see if either of you wanted me to bring you something back for dinner.”
Your heart felt warmed that the once cold CEO was now going out of the way to see if you wanted food and you also selfishly felt joy at the fact that he wasn’t meeting that woman again tonight.
“Oh my god yes! I’m starving!”, Jimin excitedly exclaimed making you and Yoongi laugh. As you watched Yoongi write down Jimins order someone walked up to the counter and cleared their throat. Expecting a customer you were happily surprised to see Jungkook.
“Kookie!!”, you shouted jogging around the corner and into his arms missing the scowl that crossed Yoongi’s face.
“What are you doing here? I feel like I haven’t seen you in months.”
“I was in the area and thought I’d stop by to get a coffee and say hi.”
As you walked over to the register to ring in an employee drink Yoongi leaned forward over the counter motioning for Jimin to do the same.
“Who is that?”, Yoongi whispered.
“Ummm that is Jungkook. He works on the morning shift. Haven’t you seen him before?”
Now that Jimin mentioned it he did remember seeing this kid working at the coffee shop. He didn’t like him back then and he really didn’t like him now watching him as he flexed his muscles in a tight black tshirt while you excitedly told him about the paper you were writing for your philosophy class. Yoongi wondered if maybe he should start going to the gym more. He also felt a bit of jealousy watching you so easily talk to Jungkook. You always acted so scared of him which he knew was mostly his own fault, but still. He wished you could freely talk about your life with him or that you would act that excited when he walked in. He also wished Jimin would stop bringing up that woman. He didn’t even remember her name. He had zero real interest in her and just wanted to have a distraction to try and stop his growing crush for you because he knew at the of the day you deserved better than him. But then he saw the look on your face as he walked out of the office building with her that night and he couldn’t take it. He gave the woman some money to buy dinner as an apology and also keep her quiet and went home by himself wishing he was as work with you instead.
And now here you were flirting with this Kookie guy right in front of him.
“Hello earth to Yoongi.”, Jimin said waving his hands in his face.
“Sorry what was that?”
“I changed my mind. I want a rainbow roll instead of the eel roll.”
“Oh yeah sure. Whatever you want.”, he said going to write that down when he saw it. You using your fingers to trace over Jungkook’s new tattoo as he conveniently flexed his bicep at the same time and that was it.
Yoongi never thought of himself as a jealous man because if one woman broke his heart he could have another replacing her that same night, but there was something different about you. And watching this all unfold made him turn green with envy.
He took out his wallet and handed Jimin a card, “Here take my card and go order whatever you want. Get something for Y/N too. I’ll cover your shift while you’re gone.”
Jimin looked at the shiny black card and wasn’t about to question him so he happily threw his apron down on the counter before sprinting for the door.
Yoongi picked up the apron putting it on trying to cover as much of his outfit as he could regretting not bringing a change of clothes since Gucci and coffee didn’t really mix.
As he walked around the counter you looked at him stunned, “What are you doing? I thought you had to meet your parents? And where is Jimin?”
Yoongi finished washing his hands before he walked back over to you, “I gave Jimin my card and told him to go get us dinner. Seemed like he needed a break. My parents will understand. I mean, me working here was their idea to begin with.”
“Oh okay.”, you replied still suspicious but there wasn’t anything you could do anyways.
Jungkook was quick to sense the tension in the air so he gave you both a goodbye before grabbing his drink and practically jogging out of the building.
“So uh how are your um classes going? What’s your major again?”, he nervously asked.
“Oh they’re alright. Lots of work.”, you chuckled, “My major is in marketing with a minor in communications.”
“Wow that’s pretty amazing. You must have big plans for once you graduate.”
“Yeah I guess. Maybe I’ll work for one of your rivals one day.”, you joked getting a laugh out of him.
Jimin seemed to be taking his time getting dinner which left you and Yoongi alone with each other until a familiar face showed up at the counter.
“Hey Namjoon, what are you doing here?”, you asked.
“Hi Y/N, I’m checking out the new art exhibit up the street and thought I’d grab a coffee first. I didn’t know you worked here.”
“Yeah have to get myself through college somehow.”
“Hey a jobs a job. Did you get your results back from Mrs. Cho’s class? That test kicked my ass.”
You giggled, “Yeah tell me about it. I studied for days and still barely squeaked by.”
Yoongi watched the scene unfold before him. “What is going on around here tonight?”, he thought to himself. You flirting with a tall handsome guy with cute dimples who was smart and artistic and friendly and Yoongi felt his blood boil again as he watched him flirt right back. He knew he couldn’t take much more of this.
As soon as Namjoon said goodbye he walked up next to you.
“Maybe we should call Jimin. Knowing him he’s probably going on a shopping spree with your card right now.”, you laughed turning to look at Yoongi.
He stood in front of you not saying anything. His hands were sweating and he felt like he was going to throw up. He leads very important meetings with some of the most powerful people in the world with ease. He’s had to fire people two days before Christmas and didn’t think twice about it. He’s faced his parents and told them off like he had a death wish but it didn’t phase him. But standing here in front of you was the most nervous he had ever been.
“Will you go out with me?”, he blurted out unsure of where this sudden confidence boost came from.
“I’m sorry what?”, you questioned.
“Y/N, will you please go out with me?”
“Like on a date??”
“Yes…like on a date…with me…Min Yoongi…and you…”
Internally you swooned seeing how nervous and flustered he was, but you did your best to remain cool on the outside.
“Yes, I would like to go on a date with you…Min Yoongi.”
You nervously paced around your bedroom that was littered with different dresses and skirts and shoes. Sure you had been on dates before but never with enemy turned lovers that were also successful billionaire ceos.
“Seriously, Yoongi isn’t going to care what you wear. He doesn’t worry about stuff like that.”, Hobi chuckled from where he was laid out on your bed snacking on some of your chips.
“Yeah well I’ve seen the women he’s left the office with over the years and I beg to differ.”
“Yeah and 99% of those women were one night stands that he just used to get his dick wet. Y/N trust me. He likes you more than that.”
“Really?”, you questioned.
Hobi nodded, “He’s been a nervous wreck all week. I swear I’ve had to cancel fifteen different reservations because he never thought the restaurant was good enough. He’s called every florist in the city looking for a bouquet that he felt was pretty enough for you. And you didn’t hear this from me and I’ll throw you right under the bus if you say you did, but he even had Jimin come up to our office yesterday and I heard Yoongi asking him for romance tips.”
“Whaaattt?”, you stated in shock.
“Mmhmm yes ma’am. I know it’s hard to believe, but Yoongi doesn’t usually do romance. He’s more of a fuck ‘em and leave ‘em kind of guy. So he is really trying to impress you.”
You knew Hobi was trying to help, but now you were even more nervous than before.
After settling on a simple black dress with your “comfy” heels Hobi left you with a hug and made you promise to text him afterwards so he could get all the details.
Yoongi was exactly on time as he nervously handed you a beautiful bouquet of red, white, and pink roses.
“Thank you. They’re beautiful.”, you smiled quickly placing them in a vase of water.
Offering you his hand he lead you out to a waiting car that quickly sped off to your destination after you were settled in.
“You look very nice tonight Y/N.”, he blushed.
“You looking really nice yourself.”, you added. And he did. He was dressed down from his usual business suit, but somehow still dressed up for the date. He wore perfectly tailored black dress pants and a slim fitting black dress shirt tucked in with the sleeves rolled up just like you liked. He had a few dainty bracelets and some earrings on to accessorize the look which was finished off with his hair lightly styled. His cologne was intoxicating like something you’d never smelled before. Masculine but yet soft and gentle much like the person who was wearing it. He looked incredible and it took everything in you not to beg him to take you in the back of the car right then.
The restaurant, of course, was fancy and expensive and you would have never even set foot in it if it wasn’t for Yoongi.
“I hope this okay. Now that I think about it should’ve asked you where you wanted to go. I’m sorry. We can go somewhere else if you would like. I don’t know if you even like steak.”, he ranted after noticing you staring in awe.
You shook your head, “Yoongi this is great. Everything looks so good. I can’t decide what to get.”
“Well order whatever you want.”, he smiled trying to relax a little.
Dinner went smoothly. The food and drinks were good. Yoongi was a great conversationist once he got rid of some of his nerves. You had a great time and when he walked you back up to your apartment you felt a sense of nervousness about what the next move should be.
As you awkwardly stood in front of your door you could feel the tension between you both until Yoongi broke it and chuckled, “I’m sorry I’m kind of new at all of this. I don’t usually take women on actual dates.”
You laughed along with him, “That’s okay. Just do what feels right to you.”
Taking a step forward he placed his hands on your hips, “Right now it feels right to kiss you.”
“Then do it.”, You replied trying to hide the quiver in your voice.
A simple kiss turned into another turned into hands wandering and undoing belts and removing clothes until you were both naked under the covers of your bed entangled with one another.
When you woke up the following morning with Yoongi’s naked chest pressed closely against your bare back and his arms still tightly wrapped around your waist you felt the most content you had in a long time. A feeling you didn’t know was possible.
“How was your date with Yoongi last night?”, Jin questioned when you walked in for your Saturday evening shift. You looked around surprised. The only people that new about your date were Hobi and Jimin. You knew Hobi and Jin had never even met let alone talked so you through a glare in Jimin’s direction who put his hands up in defense as if to say he had nothing to do with it.
Jin continued, “It’s all over the internet. I knew the two of you would end up together. That’s why I said no office sex.”
In a panic you took out your phone and started searching. Sure enough the first headline you read was ‘MYG INC.’s Min Yoongi Finally Settling Down?’ Another one read ‘Who Is the Mystery Girl That Stole the Heart of One of the Worlds Most Wanted Bachelors’. Both were accompanied by photos of you and Yoongi at the restaurant, driving in his car, and even walking into your apartment building.
“What? I didn’t know we were even being followed.”, you whispered to yourself.
“I wouldn’t worry about it. Must be a slow news day. It’ll be forgotten about by tomorrow.”, Jimin said while clocking in.
You pulled out your phone about to call Yoongi when you already heard his voice behind you.
He leaned on the counter giving you a sad smile.
“What are you doing here?”, you asked.
“I have some work stuff I need to get done so I thought I’d come into the office. I’m guessing you saw the news?”
You nodded, “Yeah I have.”
You noticed that Yoongi seemed uncomfortable maybe even worried about something.
He shook his head, “This is so fucked up. I didn’t think anyone would follow us. The last thing I wanted was for it to get out that I was dating you.”
You looked at him with wide eyes, “Are you embarrassed to be with me?”
Yoongi looked like he could cry. Frantically he reached over to grab your hand shaking his head, “God no Y/N. I would never be embarrassed to be with you. There’s just a lot of crazy people in this world you know and I just want to keep you safe. That’s all.”
Something about his words didn’t sit right with you, but in the moment you chose to let it go.
“I have to get upstairs, but call me at the end of your shift.”, he said leaning in for a kiss before deciding against it after noticing a customer walk up to the counter. Instead giving your hand a quick squeeze before walking to the elevators.
Before you knew it your shift was over. Taking out your phone and sitting down at one of the empty tables you called Yoongi who answered on the first ring like he had been waiting all day for your call.
“Hey baby, How was work?”
“Alright. Jimin tripped and fell face first into a piece of chocolate cake he was carrying which was pretty hysterical.”
Yoongi chuckled at that, “I wish I could’ve seen that. Where are you now?”
“Just sitting next to the cafe. I think I’m going to go home and get something to eat. What about you?”
“I have to have an emergency meeting in a few minutes with our partners in Japan. There was a big dip in profits in that market so we need to figure out a plan. Shouldn’t be too long though.”
“I know you’ll figure it out. Call me when you’re done with your meeting.”
“Hey uh Y/N, how about you go to my place instead?”
“Okay yeah that sounds good? I’ll just stop home and change and then head over.”
“No!…I uh…I mean why go out of your way? My place is just down the street from the office building. I’ll call the guards and let them know to let you in. I’ll text you the address and the entrance code. Just go in and shower, find something of mine to wear, get a snack if you want. I’ll let you know when I’m on my way and I’ll order us dinner.”
“Okkkkaaaay. I’ll see you later.”
“”Alright babe I gotta go. I’ll see you tonight.”
You hung up feeling very confused if not even concerned. You knew you would eventually go to his place, but you didn’t expect it to be so suddenly and with him being so pushy about it too.
“You hanging out with Yoongi tonight?”, Jimin asked taking a seat next to you.
“Uh yeah I guess so. He wants me to go straight to his place.”
“Wow he doesn’t waste any time does he? He’s a man who knows what he wants.”, Jimin chuckled.
You laughed with him, but then were smacked in the face with a sudden realization.
There was no way in hell you were going to let Yoongi, the guy you’ve been dating less than a day and also successful rich ceo, see you in your purple polka dot granny panties and mismatched sports bra. You hadn’t even washed your hair from last night and you definitely could already feel some stubble on your legs. None of this would bother you if you two had been together for a while but with the relationship being so new you still wanted to impresses him. Yoongi did say to head straight for his place, but you knew his “quick” meeting was probably to going to be a while so you could make it home, shower, and change into something nicer and then head to Yoongi’s and he’d never know and you were sure he’d appreciate it.
“Great work today Jimin! Gotta go.”, you said jumping up and running towards the door leaving Jimin behind looking dumbfounded.
Once in your bedroom you grabbed the white lace lingerie set that you thankfully decided to splurge on as a birthday gift to yourself a few months ago and started heading towards your bathroom when you felt someone grab you from behind.
For a minute you thought maybe Yoongi’s meeting really had been quick and he beat you home until an unfamiliar voice spoke, “Gotcha! Don’t fight or make this difficult. It’ll only make it worse for you.“
You tried your best to break free elbowing the guy in the throat and you managed to escape to the bathroom slamming shut and locking the door behind you.
You knew you should’ve called the police first, but at that moment there was only one person you could think about. Quickly you dialed Yoongi’s number, but it went straight to voicemail. He must still be in the meeting and had his phone shut off.
“Yoongi please help me.”, you screamed., “I went home. I’m sorry I know you said not to but I didn’t think anything would happen. There’s a man here. He broke in and he’s trying to kidnap me or something. I need you Yoongi.”Just as you hung up and we’re about to call the police there were now two men who busted through the bathroom door that was separating you from them.
“I told you not to make this difficult.”, the man from earlier spat as he picked you up by your wrists and began dragging you down the hallway. You tried to fight back but ultimately they overpowered you.
“For fucks sake I didn’t think that guy was ever going to shut up.”, Yoongi groaned with a stretch.
“Yeah that meeting took a lot longer than it should have. I’ll have the summary notes typed up and on your desk within an hour.”, Hoseok replied.
“No it can wait until Monday. Go home and relax.”, Yoongi said with a smile.
“Ahhh so not only does my best friend enjoy the benefits of boyfriend Yoongi but I also get them?”, he smirked.
“Go, before I change my mind.”
Hoseok laughed, but quickly exited the office knowing his boss really could change his mind.
Yoongi finally pulled out his phone noticing the missed call and voice email from you. He didn’t think much of it at first until the recording started playing and all the blood drained from his face. He felt like he could pass out.
He grabbed his keys and began sprinting through the office building out to the garage. He jumped in his car speeding off completely barreling through the security gate. He tried calling you over and over but there was no answer.
His car stopped in front of your apartment. Yoongi reached over into the glove box grabbing the loaded hand gun he had hidden there and thanked the stars he decided to drive himself to work today instead of having a driver pick him up like he usually would.
He ran up the six flights of stairs to your floor like they were nothing. The adrenaline running through his body made him feel like he’s was on a high and unstoppable.
Entering your apartment he drew his gun, but then immediately saw the clear signs that there had been a struggle. He checked every room, under the bed, in the closets. He screamed your name, but there was no answer.
He dropped down on the couch before running his hands over his face and groaning, “Fuck! I fucking knew something like this would happen.”
He stood up and walked to the door where right in front of his face was a note that was stabbed into the wall with a bloody knife,
“Min Yoongi, We told you not to fuck with us, but you didn’t listen. Now we have your girl and one of you is going to pay the price to make things right.”

ACT VI.
The crisp winter air nipped at my cheeks as I stepped out of my apartment building, my scarf wrapped snugly around my neck. It was a lazy Sunday, the kind of day where I would’ve normally curled up with a book or caught up on my favorite shows. But today was different. Today, Taehyung had insisted we spend the day together—no work, no drama, just us.
As I adjusted my coat, making sure not to freeze despite the sun outside, I saw him across the street, standing next to a streetlamp. He looked effortlessly handsome in a cream-colored sweater under a beige trench coat, his dark hair slightly tousled by the breeze. His eyes lit up the moment he spotted me, and I couldn’t help but smile back.
In his hands was a small bouquet of flowers—white daisies and pink tulips, delicate and cheerful.
“For you,” he said as I approached, holding the bouquet out with a boyish grin.
“Flowers?” I teased, taking them gently. “Are you trying to win me over?”
He smirked. “Maybe. Is it working?”
I laughed, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “It’s a good start.”
We began walking down the quiet street, the crunch of our shoes against the pavement mingling with the sounds of the city waking up. A few blocks away, we found our favorite little café, the one with the cozy atmosphere and the best hot chocolate in town.
Taehyung held the door open for me, and we were greeted by the familiar scent of cocoa and cinnamon. The café was warm, a stark contrast to the chilly weather outside.
“Two hot chocolates?” the barista asked with a knowing smile as we approached the counter.
“You know us too well,” Taehyung replied with a soft chuckle. We have been visiting this coffee shop back when we were only college students. This place held memories of us. And I cherished it a lot.
Once our drinks were ready—complete with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder—we found a corner booth by the window. The steam from the mugs curled into the air as we sat across from each other, the sunlight streaming in and casting a golden glow over his face.
“So,” he began, his tone playful. “What’s on your mind, Miss Y/N? Besides how devastatingly handsome I am.”
I rolled my eyes, taking a sip of my hot chocolate to hide my smile. “I was actually thinking about how certain someone managed to spill wine on my dress last night.”
His expression softened, the teasing replaced by genuine concern. “You handled that so well. I would’ve lost my cool.”
“Well,” I said, swirling my spoon in the whipped cream, “I guess I’ve had enough practice dealing with people like Tina.”
He reached across the table, resting his hand over mine. “You don’t give yourself enough credit. You are more badass than you think.”
His words warmed me more than the hot chocolate ever could. "I honestly don't know what I will do without you, Tae. I am grateful to have you in my life." I spoke out, it was the truth, I never expressed my gratefulness but now I did. I wanted him to know that I cherished him. Tae's cheeks flushed.  "I will always be here, Y/N. No matter what." My heart skept a beat. I grinned at him and brough the glass toward my lips as if to hide my blush. "So, what's the deal with your Boss tho? There seems to be tension between him and you. I didn't like how he stole you away from me last night..." I froze. My smile faltered and I cleared my throat. "He is just . . . a bit controlling, that's all." "Controlling? He is possessive of you, Y/N. His eyes are feral when he is around you." My frown deepened and I shook my head. "That's not true. I mean, he did made fun of me and my way of work but that's all. He thrives for perfection." Tae's eyes darkened, he stared at me for a minute longer, before a deep sigh escaped his lips. "I just want you to be self-aware of your surroundings, Y/N." Maybe he was right. Maybe I was too caught up between him and Yoongi to even notice what was happening. I couldn't keep this up. My feelings didn't matter, all that matters is my job and how I do it. An awkward silence stretched between me and Taehyung. We were both lost in thoughts now. Gosh, he shouldn't have mentioned Jungkook. Because with Jungkook there is also Yoongi.
After we finished our drinks, we spent the rest of the day wandering around the city. Taehyung led me to a park we used to visit back when we were teenagers. The trees were bare, their branches dusted with the season’s first frost, but the air was alive with laughter from families and couples enjoying the day.
We stopped by the frozen pond, watching as kids skated in clumsy circles. Taehyung nudged me gently with his shoulder.
“Remember the time I tried to teach you how to skate?” he asked, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
I groaned, covering my face with my hands. “Don’t remind me. I think I fell a dozen times..”
“And I caught you every single time,” he added, a proud smile on his face. He was the cutest with how he smiled, it was like stars appeared in his eyes everytime he did.
We walked on, stopping occasionally to take in the sights or to snap a picture. At one point, we found a street musician playing a soulful tune on his guitar. Taehyung pulled me to the side, bowing dramatically.
“May I have this dance?” he asked, his voice dripping with charm.
“Here? In the middle of the park?” I asked, laughing nervously.
“Why not?” He took my hand before I could protest, spinning me gently in a slow circle.
People passed by, some smiling at the sight of us, but I didn’t care. For a moment, it felt like the rest of the world had disappeared, leaving just the two of us.
By the time the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, we found ourselves sitting on a bench overlooking the river. Taehyung wrapped his scarf around my neck, ignoring my protests that I was fine.
“I don’t want you catching a cold,” he said, tucking the ends neatly under my coat.
“Thanks, Dad,” I teased, but the truth was, I didn’t mind. He was caring by nature, and maybe to be cared for felt good...
As the day came to an end, I realized how much I needed this. No work, no stress, no complicated feelings about Yoongi or Jungkook—just a simple, perfect day with Taehyung..
“Still cold?” he asked, noticing my movements.
“Not really,” I admitted. “This scarf is ridiculously warm.”
He smiled, his hands shoved casually into his pockets. “It’s because it’s mine. Everything I own is top-tier.”
I nudged him with my elbow, grinning. “Oh, please. That’s the most Taehyung thing you’ve said all day.”
He laughed, the sound light and easy, and I couldn’t help but smile wider. There was something about him—his energy, his warmth—that made everything feel okay, even after the chaos of last night.
As we turned the corner onto my street, he slowed his pace.
“You know,” he began, his tone softer now, “I really enjoyed today. It’s been a while since I’ve seen you so relaxed.”
“I guess I needed it,” I replied, glancing up at him. “Just a perfect day with an old friend.”
“Old friend?” he repeated, pretending to be offended. “I’ll have you know I’m as youthful as ever. If anything, I’ve only gotten better with age.”
I rolled my eyes but couldn’t stop the laugh that escaped me. “You’re ridiculous.”
“And you love it,” he shot back, his grin widening.
I didn’t respond, but the way my cheeks warmed betrayed me.
When we reached my building, we stopped just outside the entrance. The soft hum of the city buzzed in the background as we turned to face each other.
“Well,” I said, clutching the bouquet of flowers he’d given me earlier, “thanks for today. Really.”
“Anytime,” he said, his voice gentle. “I mean it. If you ever need to escape, just call me. I’ll be there.”
For a moment, neither of us said anything. The streetlight above cast a faint glow on his face, highlighting the sincerity in his eyes.
“You’re a good friend, Tae,” I said softly, though the words felt heavier than they should have.
His smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he recovered quickly, his expression warm and playful again. “Only a good friend? I’ll have to work on upgrading that title.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “Goodnight, Taehyung.”
“Goodnight, Y/N,” he replied, his voice low and filled with something unspoken.
I turned to unlock the door to my building, but before I could step inside, I heard him call my name.
I turned back, and there he was, standing a few feet away, his hands still in his pockets. “Don’t forget to put those flowers in water,” he said, a lopsided grin on his face.
“I won’t,” I promised, holding up the bouquet.
And with that, he turned and walked away, his figure disappearing into the quiet night. I stood there for a moment, watching him go, the warmth from the day still lingering in my chest.
As I finally stepped inside, I couldn’t help but smile to myself. Today had been perfect—simple, sweet, and exactly what I needed.
-
The scene outside the company building was unlike anything I’d ever seen. Reporters shouted over each other, their cameras flashing relentlessly as they aimed toward the entrance. Police cars were parked haphazardly along the curb, their lights casting ominous blue and red hues against the surrounding buildings.
My heart sank as I tried to push through the crowd, clutching my bag tightly. The questions flying through the air were disjointed but enough to spark unease in my chest.
“Is it true Jeon Enterprises is under investigation?” “CEO Jeon Jungkook has yet to make a statement—” "Is there a suspect already?"
I forced myself to block out the noise, stepping up to the security guard at the entrance. My heart was thumping fast and loud in my chest. This entire atmosphere looked like a crime series. I had no idea what happened but whatever it was, it was serious.
“I work here,” I said, fumbling with my badge. My hands shook slightly, and I hated how obvious it was.
The tall bulky guard dressed in a black suit squinted at my badge, then gave me a short nod. “Go ahead.”
His words did nothing to calm me as I entered the building, the usual hum of productivity replaced by frantic whispers and hurried footsteps. Police officers roamed the lobby, speaking into radios, while employees stood in clusters, their faces pale with shock.
What on earth happened?
I hurried toward the elevator, my pulse quickening with every step. The ride up to our floor felt like an eternity, and when the doors opened, the sight made my stomach churn.
Officers were everywhere, combing through desks and confiscating files. The normally pristine office space was in disarray, papers scattered and voices raised in hushed tones.
“Y/N!”
I turned to see Rya approaching me, her expression frantic. I could see the paleness on her face, she was definitely shocked and panicked.
“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Rya glanced around before pulling me aside, her grip on my arm tight. “Tina... she’s dead.”
I froze, her words not registering at first. “What?”
“They found her body last night at her apartment,” Rya said, her voice shaking. “And the last person who was seen with her was Jungkook. Police came and took him with them twenty minutes ago. They treated him like a suspect!”
The air seemed to leave my lungs. My mind raced as I tried to piece together what she was saying. Tina? Dead? And Jungkook?
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “That doesn’t make any sense. Jungkook wouldn’t—”
“I know,” Rya interrupted, her voice urgent. “But the police don’t care about what we think. And the media is having a field day with it. They are also got a search order to see if they can find any clue on what happened, Jungkook's office is a raided mess. Cops took everything.”
I glanced around the chaotic office, my chest tightening. Jungkook wasn’t just my boss; he was someone I had come to respect despite our rocky start. The idea that he could be involved in something like this was incomprehensible.
Rya’s hand hovered over the remote as the reporter’s voice filled the tense air of the office.
“Breaking news this morning,” the reporter began, her tone grave. “Authorities have confirmed the discovery of a deceased individual late last night at their apartment. The victim has been identified as an employee of Jeon Enterprises and was last seen attending the high-profile masquerade ball hosted by MNT Media just days ago.”
Rya and I exchanged a glance, our breaths caught in the shared silence. The weight of the words was crushing, and my mind raced to process what I already knew.
“Last seen at the ball...” Rya whispered, her voice barely audible, but I caught the way her hands trembled as she gripped the remote.
I swallowed hard, fighting the knot forming in my throat.
The broadcast continued, showing images of the ball—the glittering chandeliers, the elegant gowns, the masked faces. And then it switched to a live shot of an apartment building cordoned off with police tape, officers moving in and out under the glow of harsh floodlights.
“Sources close to the investigation report signs of foul play, though no official suspects have been named. Jeon Jungkook, CEO of Jeon Enterprises, has been confirmed to have been the last one who saw the victim alive, and authorities have expressed interest in speaking with him.”
“Damn it,” Rya muttered, her voice cracking slightly.
I didn’t answer, the words sticking to the back of my throat. We both knew it was. There was no need to say it out loud.
Instead, I fixed my gaze on the screen, where the reporter was now recounting snippets. “The victim was known to be a driven and outspoken employee, with significant professional ties and ongoing disputes that may have played a role in the events leading up to their death.”
"Y/N... this is bad. Really bad. The board is already panicking, and if this gets any worse, it could take down the entire company.”
I felt like the floor was tilting beneath me, the weight of the situation pressing down on my shoulders.
“I need to find Yoongi,” I muttered, my voice steadier than I felt.
“Yoongi?” Rya frowned.
“He’ll know what to do,” I said, more to convince myself than her. “He always does.”
Without waiting for her response, I turned and started toward his office, my mind a whirlwind of fear, confusion, and determination. Whatever was happening, I needed answers—and fast.
His free hand clenched into a fist at his side. “I don’t care what strings you have to pull—just do it.”
He ended the call abruptly, exhaling sharply before he turned, noticing me standing hesitantly behind him. His expression softened slightly, though the strain in his features remained.
“It’s a mess,” he admitted, his tone heavy. “As you already know, Tina was found in her apartment late last night. She has been shot in the head.”
I swallowed hard, the reality of his words sinking in. Shot in the head? What kind of an animal would do that to her?! Surely, Tina was not one of the best people, she was selfish and her ego reached the skies, but not even once did I wish her death. “And Jungkook? Why are they linking him to this?”
Yoongi’s gaze flicked to the side, conflicted. “He was seen leaving her building around the time they estimate it happened. There’s footage from a security camera, but it doesn’t show much. Just him walking out.”
“That doesn’t mean he did anything,” I said quickly, feeling a surge of defensiveness I didn’t expect.
“I know,” Yoongi said, his voice firm. “But right now, appearances are everything. The media doesn’t care about proof—they just want a story. And Tina being...” He hesitated, his expression darkening. “Well, let’s just say she didn’t make herself any friends around here. People are talking, and not in Jungkook’s favor.”
I was trying to process everything. Tina’s death. Jungkook being questioned. The chaos in the office. It felt like the ground beneath me was shifting, and I couldn’t find my footing.
“Do you think he did it?” I asked quietly, almost afraid of his answer.
Yoongi met my gaze, his dark eyes steady. “No,” he said firmly. “I’ve known Jungkook long enough to say that he’s not capable of something like this. But whether he did or didn’t isn’t the issue right now. It’s about what people believe.”
The weight of his words settled heavily in my chest.
“What do we do?” I asked, desperate for some kind of direction.
Yoongi sighed, “For now, we wait. The lawyers are working on getting him released, but until then, we need to keep things from spiraling. The company is already under enough scrutiny.”
I nodded, though it felt like a hollow gesture. Waiting wasn’t exactly my strong suit, especially not when someone I cared about was at the center of it all.
“What about us?” I asked hesitantly. “What can I do to help?”
Yoongi’s gaze softened, and for a moment, the weight he carried seemed to lift just slightly.
“Just stay out of the crossfire, Y/N,” he said gently. “You’ve already been through enough. Let me handle this.”
I bristled slightly at his words, not because I didn’t appreciate his concern, but because I hated feeling powerless.
“Yoongi,” I said firmly, standing. “I’m not going to sit on the sidelines while everything falls apart. If there’s anything I can do—anything—just tell me.”
He studied me for a long moment, his expression unreadable, before he finally nodded.
After leaving Yoongi’s office, I couldn’t shake the weight pressing down on me. Tina’s death had sent shockwaves through the entire company, and though I’d never liked her—she’d been awful to me more times than I could count—this wasn’t what she deserved.
The thought of her lifeless and alone in her apartment was too much. No matter how cruel she’d been, she was still a person, someone with her own struggles and stories I’d never known. She was still someone's daughter, sister, cousin. . .
I needed to talk to someone.
I found Hoseok and Rya in the break room, sitting at one of the tables near the window. Both of them looked tense, their earlier easy smiles replaced with furrowed brows and quiet whispers.
“Hey,” I said softly as I approached. They looked up, and Rya immediately slid over to make room for me.
“Y/N,” Hoseok said, his tone heavy. “How are you holding up?”
I sat down, clasping my hands together to stop them from trembling. “I’m not sure,” I admitted. “This whole thing with Tina... it doesn’t feel real. I know we didn’t get along, but...” I trailed off, unsure how to put the jumble of emotions into words.
“She was a nightmare,” Rya said bluntly, though her voice lacked its usual bite. “But I never thought... this. I mean, she could be petty and cruel, but murder?”
Hoseok frowned, leaning forward. “Nobody deserves that,” he said quietly. “Not even Tina. She could be terrible, sure, but she was still a person.”
The room fell silent for a moment, the three of us lost in our own thoughts.
“I keep thinking about the last time I saw her,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “At the ball. She seemed so... smug. Like she was on top of the world. And now, she’s gone.”
Rya crossed her arms, looking conflicted. “Do you think someone here could’ve done it? I mean, everyone knew she had enemies, but this is... extreme.”
Hoseok shook his head. “I don’t want to believe it, but with the police here, searching the office...” He trailed off, his expression darkening. “It’s hard not to wonder.”
“And Jungkook?” Rya asked, looking at me. “Do you think he’s involved?”
“No,” I said firmly, surprising even myself with the conviction in my voice. “I don’t. He might be cold and distant sometimes, but he’s not a killer. He’s... he’s better than that.”
Hoseok and Rya exchanged a glance, but neither argued.
“What happens now?” Rya asked after a moment. “If Jungkook is being investigated, what does that mean for the company? For us?”
I shook my head, feeling the weight of uncertainty settle over me again. “I don’t know,” I admitted. “But I think we need to stick together. Now more than ever.”
They both nodded, and for the first time in a long while, I felt a glimmer of solidarity between us.
As the three of us sat there, piecing together what little we knew, I couldn’t help but feel that this was just the beginning of something much bigger—and much darker—than any of us could imagine.
-
The morning was gray and oppressive, the atmosphere at Jeon Enterprises thick with unease. I was called to help clear out Tina’s desk under police supervision, a task I didn’t relish but couldn’t refuse. The sight of her empty chair sent a chill through me. Tina had been vile, no doubt about it, but to think she was gone—and in such a horrific way—made my stomach turn.
The desk was surprisingly tidy for someone as chaotic as Tina. Neat stacks of papers, pristine stationery, and a drawer full of color-coded folders. Yet as I sifted through the surface level, something felt off. It was too perfect, almost staged.
A detective stood nearby, arms crossed as he observed. “Anything that seems unusual, set it aside,” he said flatly.
Unusual? Where did I even start? Tina herself was a cocktail of ambition and cruelty, a persona that could fill a thousand file folders with secrets. As I reached into the bottom drawer, my fingers brushed against something that didn’t feel like an office supply. It was wedged under a stack of legal pads—a worn, leather-bound journal.
I glanced at the detective, who was momentarily distracted by another officer. With a quick, furtive motion, I slipped the journal into my bag. I told myself I’d hand it over eventually, but something about it called to me. A gut feeling. Tina had gone out of her way to hide this. Why?
Once I got home that evening, I pulled the journal out and set it on my kitchen table. The leather was cracked and faded, the corners worn down like it had been carried around for years. When I opened it, the faint scent of Tina’s signature perfume wafted up, mingled with something darker—ink and secrecy.
The first few pages were mundane. Meeting notes, to-do lists, sketches of presentation layouts. But as I flipped further, the tone shifted. The handwriting became erratic, the words slanting across the page with a kind of manic energy.
November 3: Another meeting with K. Promises, promises. Does he think I’m stupid? I’ll take what’s mine before he screws me over.
November 12: Y/N is such a naive little thing. Too easy to push around. If only she knew how far out of her depth she is. Pathetic.
I recoiled at the venom in her words. My name was scrawled there like a curse, surrounded by complaints about nearly everyone in the office. Tina hadn’t just disliked people—she’d despised them.
And then there were the cryptic entries:
December 1: The deal is in place. If K tries to back out, he’ll regret it.
December 15: I’m not playing games anymore. If they think they can silence me, they’re dead wrong.
The entries stopped abruptly a week before her death. My fingers trembled as I turned the pages, my heart pounding in my chest. Who was “K”? What deal? And what had Tina meant by “silence”?
Before I could dive further, my phone buzzed. The name on the screen made my blood run cold: Richard Delgrassi. My father’s old associate.
“Mr. Delgrassi? How did you find my number?” I said cautiously, picking up the call.
“I called your father, wanted to check up on you.” his voice was smooth, but there was an edge to it, like a blade sheathed in silk. “Are you okay? I heard about your co-worker Tina.”
I swallowed thickly, deep sigh escaped my lips. "I am fine, sir. It just . . . shocked us all."
“I am really sorry to hear that, if you need anything, please let me know. If you want to leave the company and start somewhere fresh, I will help you out." Leave. Why would I want to leave? I hummed. "Of course, sir, I will let you know." I heard him shuffle on the other side of the line. "What about Jungkook, I heard he is at the police station for questioning." I started pacing back and forth, "Well, right now we don't have much information on what happens next, but hopefully police would release him soon." "I hope so too." he spoke but something in his voice didn't feel sincere. "Alright, I just wanted to check up on you. Know you have someone you can count on." "Thank you, sir..."
The line went dead before I could ask anything else. I stared at the phone, my heart hammering in my chest.
I glanced back at the journal, its leather cover now looking more sinister than mysterious. Whatever Tina had been involved in, it wasn’t just office politics. It was something far darker, and I was smack in the middle of it.
-
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I stood in front of the police station, staring at the cold, gray walls. It didn’t feel real—none of it did. My mind kept replaying the moment I heard the news: Tina, my manager, was dead. Murdered. And Jungkook, the CEO of the company I’d worked for, was the prime suspect unofficially.
The shock of it had hit me hard. Tina’s death had left a void in our office, and the fact that Jungkook, the man I already thought I knew so well, was now behind bars... it shattered everything.
I took a deep breath before walking through the sterile halls of the station. The fluorescent lights buzzed above me, making the air feel thick and oppressive. I passed the front desk, where the officers barely acknowledged me and suddenly bumped into someone.
The impact jolted me slightly, and I looked up to find Yoongi standing there, his dark eyes sharp and unreadable as ever. He sighed heavily, as if seeing me here was the last thing he needed.
“What the hell are you doing here, Y/N?” he asked, his tone low but laced with irritation.
I straightened my posture, refusing to let him intimidate me. “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m here to see Jungkook.”
Yoongi crossed his arms, his expression hardening. “You shouldn’t be here. This isn’t your fight, and it’s definitely not safe.”
“Not safe?” I scoffed, keeping my voice low so the officers milling about wouldn’t overhear. “I work at the same company, Yoongi. Tina was my manager too, in case you forgot. This affects all of us, not just you.”
He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. “That’s exactly why you need to stay out of it. Let the police handle this. Do you even realize how messy this is going to get?”
I glared at him, my frustration boiling over. “Messy or not, I have a right to know what’s going on. Jungkook isn’t just some random CEO. He’s—”
“He’s what?” Yoongi cut in, his tone sharp. “Your boss? Your friend? Someone you think you can trust? Newsflash, Y/N: trust doesn’t mean a damn thing right now.”
I felt the sting of his words but refused to back down. “You’re unbelievable,” I shot back. “You act like you’re the only one allowed to care about what’s happening.”
Yoongi ran a hand through his messy long hair, his jaw tight. I could notice he has been sleep deprived too, the dark circles under his eyes screamed tiredness. “I care because I know what’s at stake. And you showing up here, trying to play detective, is only going to make things worse.”
I stepped closer, narrowing the gap between us. “Then why are you here, Yoongi? If you think it’s so dangerous, why aren’t you staying out of it?”
His lips pressed into a thin line, and for a moment, he didn’t answer. I saw his eyes darken and he took a sharp breath through his nose, hands now resting on his hips. "Fucking hell, why are you so stubborn?" "Maybe I am good at annoying the hell out of you." His eyes narrowed but he didn't say anything. There was a silence stretching between us before he finally turned around and headed down the hallway.
“Fine,” he muttered over his shoulder. “If you’re so hell-bent on getting involved, follow me. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
We made our way to the interrogation room, where Jungkook was being held. My heart felt like it was lodged in my throat as we approached the small, glass-walled room. Jungkook sat inside, his hands folded on the metal table in front of him. He looked tired, his usually sharp features drawn and pale.
The officer standing outside the door nodded at Yoongi, allowing us in. I hesitated for a moment before stepping inside, the air thick with tension.
Jungkook glanced up, his dark eyes meeting mine briefly before shifting to Yoongi.
“Didn’t expect visitors,” he said, his voice low and rough.
Yoongi pulled out a chair and sat down, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp. “We’re not here to chat. What’s going on, Jungkook?”
Jungkook leaned back in his chair, his gaze flickering between the two of us. “You tell me. One minute, I’m at the office; the next, I’m hauled in here like a criminal.”
“Did you know Tina was dead?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts to stay composed.
His jaw tightened, and for a moment, he didn’t answer. “I didn’t kill her, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“Then why are you here?” Yoongi pressed, his tone firm.
Jungkook let out a bitter laugh. “Because someone saw me with her at the ball, and apparently, that’s enough to make me the prime suspect. Never mind that half the company was there."
I glanced at Yoongi, who didn’t break his stare. “And what about Tina? Did she say anything to you that night? Act strange? Mention something... off?”
Jungkook’s expression darkened. “She didn’t say much of anything to me. She was too busy playing her games, like always. I told everything to the police but they still keep me in this godforsaken hole.”
“Games?” I asked, leaning forward.
“Y/N, you know fully well how she was,” Jungkook said, his voice bitter. “Testing people's limits, making sure everyone knew she had the upper hand. But I didn’t play along, and maybe that pissed her off. Who knows?”
Yoongi tapped his fingers against the table, his gaze never leaving Jungkook. “You need to give us more than that. If you want us to help you, we need something concrete.”
Jungkook’s eyebrow raised, he was shifting his eyes from me and Yoongi. I looked away, avoiding his gaze. “Help me? Since when are you two playing detectives?”
I rolled my eyes. "We are trying to help you out." I snapped and Jungkook shifted in his seat, letting out a deep sigh of defeat.
The tension in the room thickened, and I felt a pang of guilt watching Jungkook sitting there, defiant but vulnerable. I glanced at Yoongi, his steely demeanor unwavering as he leaned back in his chair, arms crossed.
"Do you know for how long you will be captive here?" I finally asked. Jungkook shrugged. "No idea, until they find an evidence that the killer was not me." "What happens to the comapny now?" I pressed, "is it gonna shut down?" "I will take over." Yoongi muttered, "for the time being, until Jungkook gets released." I frowned glancing at Jungkook who hummed, I guess they managed to talk this through.  "Fine, we will keep digging and see what we will find."  "We?" My Boss frowned, "Y/N, I don't want you to get involved in this." "See?!Told her the same thingg, she doesn't listen." "Stop blabbing about the same things, I want in and I want to help. You two, adult men, act like kids. Jungkook, your situation here is not colorful at all. The quicker we get you out, the quick it would be your name to be cleared in front of the media." -
The sharp chill of the late evening air greeted us as we stepped out of the police station. I pulled my coat tighter around myself, my mind still racing with everything that had just transpired. Jungkook’s face, a mixture of frustration and vulnerability, was etched in my memory.
“I’ll call a cab,” I muttered, fishing my phone out of my bag.
Yoongi raised an eyebrow, stepping toward the parking lot. “Don’t bother. I’ll drive you.”
I stopped mid-dial and turned to him. “No offense, but I don’t think that’s a great idea.”
His expression didn’t change, but there was an edge of impatience in his voice. “Why? Because I’m not the most charming chauffeur? Or are you still mad at me for that club thing-y?”
“Neither,” I said quickly, my tone defensive. “It’s just... I don’t need you to babysit me, Yoongi. I can take care of myself.”
“Clearly,” he said dryly, gesturing to my phone. “And you’ll do that by waiting alone outside a police station at night for a cab? Genius plan.”
I opened my mouth to argue but stopped when I realized how ridiculous it would sound. With a resigned sigh, I slid my phone back into my bag. “Fine. But no commentary while you drive.”
“Deal,” he said with a small smirk, leading the way to his car.
The ride started in silence, the hum of the engine the only sound between us. Yoongi’s driving was calm and efficient, and for some reason, it annoyed me that he didn’t seem as rattled by everything as I was.
“Yesterday,” I began, breaking the silence, “when I was cleaning out Tina’s desk... I found something.”
He glanced at me briefly before returning his eyes to the road. “The journal.”
I blinked, surprised. “How did you—”
"Do you think I am that stupid?"  There was silence, he narrowed his eyes, "don't even answer this, Y/N." I chuckled at that and shrugged my shoulders. "I saw you take a suspicious looking book off Tina's desk without the police looking so..." "I figured that it's better to find who did it first with a solid evidence, before turning it to the police." I hesitated but continued, “It’s... disturbing. Tina wrote about people she hated—colleagues, clients, even... me.”
Yoongi didn’t react visibly, but I caught his fingers tightening slightly on the steering wheel.
“She was ruthless,” I continued. “Manipulating people, sabotaging careers—it’s all in there. And then there are these cryptic entries about a ‘deal.’ She doesn’t say who it was with, but it’s obvious it was risky. She mentioned being scared, like she knew it might backfire.”
Yoongi’s jaw clenched. “And now she’s dead.”
I swallowed hard, the reality of it hitting me again. “Yeah. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Someone she crossed or someone involved in that deal... they might have wanted her gone.”
“You said the police don’t know about it yet?” he asked, his voice tense.
“No,” I admitted. “I didn’t trust them to handle it the right way, especially with the way they’re already treating Jungkook.”
“Smart,” Yoongi said, nodding approvingly. “But if that journal is as explosive as you say, keeping it quiet might put you in danger.”
I bit my lip, anxiety bubbling in my chest. “I know. But what choice do I have? If it can help clear Jungkook’s name, I can’t just ignore it.”
Yoongi pulled into a quieter street, the streetlights casting long shadows over the car. He turned to me, his dark eyes serious. “You’re not doing this alone, Y/N. Whatever’s in that journal, we’re going to figure it out together.”
For a moment, his words surprised me. Despite his often aloof demeanor, there was an unexpected warmth in his voice.
“Thank you,” I said quietly, meaning it.
He nodded once and turned his attention back to the road, the rest of the drive passing in contemplative silence.
When we finally reached my place, he parked at the curb and leaned back in his seat. “Keep the journal close. Don’t let anyone else see it for now.”
“I won’t,” I assured him, opening the door.
As I stepped out, he called after me, “And Y/N?”
I paused, turning back.
“Be careful,” he said, his expression unreadable in the dim light.
I nodded, clutching my bag tightly as I headed up to my apartment, the weight of the journal—and everything it represented—feeling heavier than ever.

“Y/N, I-”
“Taehyung, I need a few minutes of silence...please.”
Taehyung sighed and looked down at his hotel carpet in defeat. He had no idea this was going to happen, how could he? He was excited that Y/N was here with him, he missed her so much but he never imagined their reunion would turn out like this. Her sitting away from him mad/sad at what happened and him looking down at the ground with confusion. How was he supposed to know his ex-girlfriend was going to show up?
Eight hours ago
Y/N was waiting at the airport with her phone in her hand. Jungkook was the one that helped her plan all of this and she felt touched that he wanted to help her. They didn’t have many interactions but she was glad that he liked her. She was reading random news articles until she got a text from Jungkook, I’m in the private section. I’ll meet you at the entrance and then we can go : ).
She smiled at this and put her phone in her pocket as she stood up. She gathered her luggage and headed towards the area. This was her first time out of the country. She wanted to go to Ireland last year but things got complicated with the tickets. She's never missed someone so much that she would spend almost a thousand dollars to go see them but here she is.
She looked past all the people around her the best she could and saw Jungkook leaning behind the sign. She knew it was him because she bought him that hoodie before he left New York. She smiled to herself and ran towards him with joy in her step, “Kook.”
Jungkook looked up from his phone and she couldn’t see his face. He had a mask and sunglasses on but she could tell that he was smiling through the lens, “Y/N. How was your flight?”
“It was long, it was my first time flying outside of the country.”
“Oh, really? I hope it went well for you.”
Y/N shrugged her shoulders and let out a small laugh, “It was fine. Nothing great nor bad happened, that’s all you can ask for. How's Tae?”
Jungkook looked around before he tilted his head towards the exit and she nodded her head. The two walked through the area with Jungkook’s hand gently on her back, “Tae’s been...he’s been off.”
She looked at him and frowned at this, “Why? Is it because of the lack of sleep or something else?”
“I honestly think it's because he misses you. You know this is the first time he had someone on tour. I don’t think he knows how to act, he's a sensitive person who just hides it.”
“We-We’re not together.”
“Sureee....”
She nodded her head and made a mental note. She bit her lip because she wanted to know how Taehyung was doing with Namjoon but she didn’t know if it was appropriate for her to ask, “How have you been doing?”
Jungkook opened the door for her and they entered the parking lot. He took off his mask and sunglasses to give her his bunny smile, “I’ve been having fun. Hoseok has been taking me out to ramen almost every night.”
“That sounds fun, has he talked about Julia?”
Jungkook rolled his eyes at this and let out a small groan, “Yes, he tells me everything. Why?”
Y/N sighed at this and looked at him, “Julia hasn’t really been talking to us all that much.”
“Oh, why?”
“Her cousin is in town. When he's in town, we don’t hear from her. At least Hoseok talks about her, makes me feel better.”
Jungkook opened the car door for her and nodded his head, “I’m sure she's okay. Let me put your luggage in the back.”
“Thank you, kook.”He sat next to her in the middle after doing that and it was clear he was excited. She raised her eyebrow at this and let out a small laugh, “You're really excited about this.”
“I never surprised Tae before. Well, not like this. I’m excited to see his face and maybe then he can be happy.”
Y/N frowned at this and looked down at her shoes, “Has he been sad?”
“He’s been more irritated. He hasn’t talked to Namjoon or Yoongi in a week or so.”
I know about Namjoon but Yoongi...that means something happened, “I’m sure it's stress too.”
“That’s true, he’s not really good at handling stress. I was thinking we should just go straight to his room.”
She nodded her head and smiled at him, “That sounds exciting. I missed him.”
“And trust me, he missed you.”
The ride there was short and the nerves started to come through. It’s been a while since she’s seen Taehyung. Yes, they talk on the phone almost every day and even Facetime but this was different. Would he act the same with her in person? She hoped so. She just recently figured out her feelings towards him and wanted him to feel the same way. She thought he did but you can never be so sure about people. Of course, he was different but you never know.
They walked in the long tan hallway and with each step she took, her steps got louder in her ears. It felt like the walls around her were sucking her up and she felt like she was going to get sick. Jungkook noticed this and gently rubbed her shoulders causing her to look up at him, “It's going to be okay. You shouldn’t feel nervous, he missed you.”
“I hope so...he’s told me so many times but I don’t know...it’s my brain being my enemy right now.”
“Well, listen to your heart then.”
She sighed and nodded her head, “You’re right...is this his room?”
Jungkook nodded his head and smiled at her, “Good luck.”
“What do you mean-” Jungkook knocked on the door and ran away leaving her standing with a confused look. She blinked twice and she registered what just happened. Jungkook left her and she was by herself now. That asshole.
“Jungkook, I swear- Y/N?”
She stared at him with a blank expression until she processed. It was Taehyung, it was really him looking at her with shock, “Tae, surprise.”
Taehyung didn’t even say anything and immediately wrapped his arms around her waist and brought her into a tight hug. She smiled to herself and wrapped her arms around his neck as she felt soft kisses on her neck, “I miss you so much, Y/N.”
“I miss you too.”
When they let go Taehyung smiled at her and pushed some hair behind her ear, “How did you get here?”
“Jungkook helped me.”
“That little brat. I should’ve known he was up to something.”
She raised her eyebrow and tilted her head, “How?”
“He was acting weird. He’s not good at hiding things.”
She got on her tippy toes and placed a kiss on his chin, “I’m glad he hid this. I missed you so much, Tae.”
“I missed you more. Did you pack that pink bra I like?”
She rolled her eyes and smacked his shoulders, “Shut the fuck up and get inside.” He grabbed her luggage and closed the door as she looked back at him with a small smirk, “Yes, yes I did.”
Taehyung bit his lip and set her luggage in the corner, “Are you wearing it?”
“I don’t know...I forgot. It was a long flight.”
“How about we found out together.”
Y/N shrugged her shoulders and sat on the bed with her legs slightly open, “I guess, I have nothing else to do.”
Taehyung let out a small laugh and took off the shirt, “Let’s investigate.”
She smiled to herself and shrugged her shoulders, “If you can. I don’t think you can solve the mystery.”
“Is that right? I guess I have to get to work.”
“Yes, you do...sir.”
˗ˏˋ✩ˎˊ˗
After four rounds, Y/N and Taehyung lay in the bed as they stared up at the ceiling together. She was cuddled into his side as his arm was wrapped around her shoulder. He leaned down and kissed the top of her head, “I missed you. Fuck, I missed this.”
She let out a small laugh and placed a kiss on his chest, “I can’t believe I lasted this long without you.”
“You sound dramatic.”
She moved to straddle his waist and shrugged her shoulders, “I have nothing else to do...hey can I ask you something?”
“Of course you can.”
She looked away for a split second and then back at him with a frown, “Jungkook told me you haven’t been talking to Yoongi...is everything okay?”
Taehyung sighed, he needed to slap the shit out of Jungkook the next time he saw him, “Baby, it's nothing...I just found out something and I didn’t like it.”
“Tae, please tell me.”
He sighed and nodded his head, “I found out what happened with my ex...Namjoon and Yoongi lied to me about it.”
“Tell me.”
Taehyung told her everything and she was shocked, “I just don’t know what to do, baby.”
Y/N kissed his forehead and gave him a small smile, “You just need time...but you have to remember you work with them. You have to try and work with them, even though you're not happy about it. Once this tour is done, you can have a small break from them.”
He nodded his head and softly rubbed her thigh, “You're right...I just can’t help it.”
“I know babe but time will heal. Don’t rush it.”
Before he could say anything there was a knock at the door. She got off his waist and gave him a small smile, “I have to go to the bathroom. I’ll be waiting for you.”
He smiled at her and felt his heart flutter at her words. He watched her go into the bathroom and she gave him a small wave before she closed the door. He got up and put on random black shorts from his bag and a shirt as he made his way to the door. He opened the door and he frowned at what was in front of him, “Aria? What the hell are you doing here?”
Aria gave him a small smile, “I wanted to see you...I needed to talk to you.”
“I don’t want to talk to you. Leave me alone, Yoongi told me everything. Why would you do that to me?”
Aria sighed and looked away from him, “I was being selfish...I was protecting myself.”
“You broke me and you didn’t care.”
Aria looked back and glared at him, “I did care!”
“No, you didn’t. If you cared then you would have never done that to me. Honestly, I want to say thank you for doing that. I met the girl of my dreams and it's not you.”
“That tweet then, it's true.”
Taehyung sighed and rolled his eyes, “Aria just leave.”
“Tae, is everything okay?”
Tae turned to see Y/N in a white robe and he couldn’t help a smile, “Is that her?”
Aria moved past him and looked at Y/N with a glare as Y/N returned the glare, “I have a name but you're not worth knowing it.”
Aria looked back at Taehyung and shook her head, “Your dream girl is this? She's average.”
“I may be average but at least I would never break Taehyung’s heart. You're embarrassing yourself...have some self-respect.”
She scoffed at this as she continued to stare at Taehyung, “You really think I’ll let this go.”
Taehyund nodded his head and made his way to Y/N. He wrapped his arm around her waist, “Yeah because I don’t want you and never will.”
She let out a small laugh and shook her head, “You made the worst decision, remember I have pictures of us and I’ll find out who you are. I’ll make your life hell.”
“Then I’ll sue you.”
Aria didn’t say anything but she slammed the door. Y/N shook her head and walked towards the bed with her head hanging low. Taehyung followed her with a worried look, “Y/N, I-”
“Taehyung, I need a few minutes of silence...please.”
He was about to leave but she grabbed his wrist, “Tae...what are we?”
“What do you mean?”
Y/N looked away and then back with a shy gaze, “Are we together? I heard you call me your dream girl but we never clarified...”
Taehyung let out a laugh and shook his head, “A girl just threatened us together and you're worried about our status?”
“She can try it. I can take care of myself, what are we?”
“Well, you're my girlfriend.”
Y/N smiled at this and leaned forward placing a kiss on his forehead, “Let’s sue her together then.”
“That was really hot coming from you.”
She smirked at this and untied her robe, “Then show me how hot it was.”
Extended Ending:
Jungkook was eating ramen with Hoseok when his phone buzzed. Hoseok raised his eyebrow and put the bowl down, “Who is it?”
“It's Taehyung but he shouldn’t be texting me.”
Hoseok let out a small laugh and put down his chopsticks, “What did he say?”
“When you get back I’m going to kick your ass...Hyung! What did I do! I gave him the greatest gift!”
“Well...you're going to deal with it..”

enamored ༓ myg (m) | one
Tumblr media
✑ Summary: Min Yoongi is nothing like what you imagined him to be when you saw him preform at the local cafe in town. Yet little by little he surprises you with his true self, until somehow you find yourself completely enamored with him.
Tumblr media
pairing: new independent artist!yoongi x veterinarian!reader
genre/AU: fluff, angst, eventual smut, strangers2acquaintance2lovers, mini-series
word count: 4,643
Warnings: Nothing too heavy but oc is around 25, mention of unhealthy past relationships, yoon is a struggling artist, talk about social insecurity, cats, the rest of the fluff stuff is for you to find out haha
now playing: cold/mess
a/n: Due to me and my fellow Yoon enthusiasts missing myg, I bring us this three-part mini-series. I'm not sure how this will go but hope you enjoy! 🥰 Lowkey has me thinking of Yoongi pre-debut days.
Tumblr media
Tonight’s the first night the local coffeehouse you and your friend, Nara, visit for weekly rant sessions is showcasing musicians of all backgrounds, statuses, and genres. And you are very much looking forward to the absolute cutie pictured in a fluffy sky-blue cardigan, a big gummy smile on, and undeniably soft, chocolate eyes.
His arms casually rest atop his guitar followed by the words ‘Agustd’ in scripted font underneath. You’ve never heard of him before but you’re convinced that he’ll play something light and uplifting given the aesthetic of his image displayed on the TV screen.
“God it’s packed like a football stadium here,” Nara interrupts your gaze on the tv from across the table. She sits with her hands folded on the wooden surface, a giant diamond sparkling on her left hand.
“You’re telling me,” you tsk. “I already came close to bumping into a middle-aged man with two lattes in his hands and a couple of college girls attempting to film a TikTok on our way in.”
It’s no exaggeration to say the cafe itself is swarming with new faces who are eager for a night of leisure while overworked baristas rush to fulfill orders. You have the innate instinct to offer them your help, though they’d likely advise it’s better for you to remain seated.
“Have you ever been to a football stadium though?” You ask more condescendingly than intended, but you find her analogy amusing since she’s never been one to pay attention to sports.
Nara rolls her eyes at your light probing. “No, but I’ve seen pictures. You know how big of a fan my Yunjun is of football. He’s gone to the United States to watch the super bowl eight times now.”
She says it proudly, but the reality is that her lovey Yunjun has not once invited her to go with him. Instead, he takes three of his closest friends and disappears to the other side of the world for two weeks. Everyone knows the super bowl only lasts one day so why the hell is he there for that long? Likely to get drunk with his buddies, that’s why.
“You know I don’t like him,” you say bluntly. “Why are you marrying him again?” Nara’s confident smile turns into a defensive scowl as she proceeds to tell you, once again, all the ways that Yunjun “completes her”.
On and on she continues for ten minutes straight until her voice slowly drowns out to the clapping and cheering of the crowd behind her. A young woman named Yuri just finished performing a few of her original songs and is thanking the audience for listening. You lightly clap along in politeness.
“Anyway, as I was saying,” Nara pipes up once the crowd falls silent again. “Yunjun is extremely thoughtful. Yesterday he messaged me to meet for lunch without me having to ask first.”
“Uh huh…” you drawl out, eyes shifting between her and the distracting movements of bodies behind her. The young woman who just performed steps off the stage while a young man steps forward to take her place.
You struggle to keep eye contact with Nara as said man lazily slumps himself on the wooden stool at the front of the room and balances his acoustic guitar on his knee. He looks like he just rolled out of bed ten minutes ago; hair tousled about, a big black sweatshirt covering half his body, and possibly the most somber facial expression on.
Is that the same guy from the promo image? Agust something?
You lean your head to the side and past Nara’s head to get a better view.
It is him but he looks so starkly different from his photo on the TV screen. His mood is much more melancholy than you imagined, like Grumpy Bear from Care Bears.
It makes you wild with curiosity.
You find yourself placing a hand under your chin, intent on listening to his every word. By now, Nara's noticed your interest in the musician so she's stopped talking and pays attention to him as well.
“Hi, I’m Agustd and I'm an independent artist,” he introduces himself in a low voice, lips pressed to the microphone. His focus is set on the audience in front of him at first but then, as if feeling your heavy stare, he flicks his eyes directly into yours. "I'm also known as Min Yoongi."
You feel your stomach flutter at the gesture which only seems to grow in intensity when he doesn't bother to remove his gaze from you.
He can't actually be looking at you, right?
"I'm starting off with a song I wrote a few years ago titled Seesaw," he continues. "I wrote it while going through, what I thought was at the time, a hopeless period of my life. Please enjoy." And with that he begins strumming on the chords of his guitar, eyes slowly closing to immerse himself in the beautiful music.
Everyone is on the edge of their seats as much as you when he leans further into the mic, lips gently parting.
"In the beginning, well, it was fun
Just going up and down itself
Before we knew, we both became sick of
meaningless waste of emotions
A repeated seesaw, seesaw game
Having come this far, I got sick of, got sick of it
A repeated seesaw, seesaw game
We’re both got tired and became sick of it..."
As Yoongi continues to preform with closed eyes and breathy voice, you take in the rawness of his lyrics. Seesaw tells about relationship that's grown draining; that the weight of staying in something so tiring should come to an end sooner rather than later.
It resonates with you deeply as you've experienced first-hand the challenges of staying in a bottomless relationship. You didn't want to acknowledge it at the time, but you put in all the effort when you and your ex were together. And though it was three years ago since your break up, the constant feeling of exhaustion and being less than haunts you every night.
The vibrations in Yoongi's voice echoing off the mic tells you he's been through similar pain. So much so that it thrums in your own chest and you realize how wrong you'd been to think he'd compose a lighthearted song.
"How crafty the heart of a person is
Though we know one will get hurt if the other is not there,
because we both don’t want to be the bad guy,
we continue to awkwardly pass the buck, umm umm
and end up becoming exhausted, ironically reaching the paralleled balance
Ay, this is not the kind of balance that I wanted..."
With every line, you notice Yoongi's delicate fingers struggling to hold down each chord. It's clear that he's thinking about whoever this song is about in this very moment. Nevertheless, he presses on with a fervent spirit until the end.
You and a handful of people are the only ones who clap when the last line of Seesaw is sung. The rest of the audience is oddly reluctant to applaud and your best guess is that they weren't expecting to hear something so profoundly reflective. The musicians before him had been far more upbeat so to speak.
"Thank you," Yoongi mutters with hesitance. He scans the mute crowd who seemingly cause the air to grow thicker by exchanging awkward glances with one another.
Without another word, Yoongi surprises everyone by standing up from his stool and walking over to the seat he was sitting in before coming on stage. He picks up a few loose papers, and his keys, and zips his guitar into its case before heading for the exit.
"Didn't he have more songs to play?" Nara turns to you with a frown on her face, puzzled at the turn of events.
"I thought so too," you reply, fingers restless as you watch him leave the cafe. "You know what...I'll be right back." You're unsure what prompts you to follow him out other than your unsettled conscience telling you that this isn't the first time he's gotten this type of response and that he deserves better.
Tumblr media
"Excuse me, Agustd? Or Yoongi?" You're sure he can hear your voice call to him as he opens the rear door of his beater car. His head whips in your direction immediately.
"Yeah?" He answers simply yet when he sees the white of your eyes, he does a double take; stunned that the only person he cared to recognize the whole night followed him out.
Typically with small gigs like this Yoongj doesn't take much note of the crowd unless they're booing him off the stage. And even then he plays it off. But somehow, your relaxed gaze soothed him, so he remembers you—he remembers the way you made him feel.
"I just wanted to say you sounded good. Better than good actually," you correct yourself, words sputtering out a little too fast. "Seesaw is amazing and you're a genius to have written it."
Your hands get clammier as you approach him. You hope this doesn't sound dumb but something in you won't let him leave without giving him at least a shred of honest encouragement.
The corner of Yoongi's mouth barely quirks up before it quickly falls back down. He sets his guitar in the back seat of his car, then shuts the door and gives you a nod. "Thanks but you don't have to say that."
He moves to the driver's door and reaches to grip the handle but out of nowhere, you stop him by placing a hand over his wrist.
"I mean it," you assure him.
Yoongi doesn't move a muscle as he glances between your hand around his wrist and your seemingly oblivious face. For three seconds you stare at each other with intense eyes, wordless as you take in each other's micro-expressions.
Through the physical contact, you can both feel the rapid beating of each other's hearts but you're unsure if it's simply nerves from an embarrassing situation or something else entirely.
"Sorry." You finally come to your senses and retract your fingers. "I just wanted to tell you that I connected with the lyrics of your song. Not everyone does and that's okay but it really is amazing Yoongi. So don't pay attention to those rude people in there okay?"
At this, Yoongi's expressions soften and a timid smile forms on his plushy lips. He runs a hand through his messy hair, smoothing down some of the loose strands sticking up.
"I appreciate you coming out to tell me this...wait what's your name?"
"__."
"__. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed my music but don't worry, I don't take it personally when people dislike my songs. It just means it wasn't for them." He shrugs carelessly but there's a hidden sorrow laced in his tone. He holds his chin high yes, but his heart is so deep in his chest.
"Hey," you start. "If I was a music manager I'd sign you on immediately. You don't happen to have that song recorded do you? Uploaded to music platforms or anything?"
"Yeah, I just put it on Spotify actually. I also have some CDs." Yoongi pauses and wets his lips. "If you're interested," he finishes with slightly averted eyes.
"Call me old fashioned but could I get one of those?"
"What?" He taken aback by your response.
"A cd. You said you have one?"
"Uh sure, yeah just a second." He walks to the trunk of his car, opens the lid, and rummages around until he pulls forward a small cardboard box. "I don't have great packaging yet but here's one." Yoongi holds out a plain white sleeve with a disk inside. "Hope you don't mind but I signed my name on it. Thought it would make it personal or something."
You take the disk from his hand and cheese at him. "Wow, I can't believe I'm getting an autographed version right off the bat. How much?"
Yoongi shakes his head. "You can have it."
"No, really how much?" Taking this man's cd without paying him a dime does not sit well with you. Regardless, Yoongi continues to insist.
"It's on me. Maybe when I get to the point where I can have concerts you'll come." He jokes but you remain serious, digging into your pocket for your wallet. You take 26000 won out ($20) and shove it in his hand. "Hey wait!" Yoongi calls after you when you quickly start backing away from him.
"No takebacks!" You holler. "I'm sorry to leave so suddenly but my friend's waiting for me inside. It was nice meeting you Yoongi and I look forward to when you become a raging success. Until then, I'll be streaming your songs on Spotify! Treat yourself to something nice alright?"
He steps forward, mouth falling open as if to say something but nothing comes out. Your face is already turned away from him as he watches you trot back to the cafe'. He rolls the cash in his hand and stuffs it in his back pocket, hoping that maybe he'll cross paths with you again.
Tumblr media
A week passes and you've not forgotten your interaction with Min Yoongi. You wish you hadn't run away like you did but it's true that Nara was waiting for you inside. Any longer and she would have sent a search party for you–she's on the extreme end.
Plus, you didn't want him giving the money back to you. It was a noble gesture to hand it over to you for free but it wasn't necessary. Yoongi is an independent artist who's working to establish himself in the music industry and you were more than willing to pay for good music.
You're currently sitting in your car, replaying the affair in your head for the umpteenth time while you wait for your pizza to be ready. You were told you'd get a text notification though it's taking longer than usual, given how much louder the growling of your stomach has gotten.
Finding new ways to distract yourself gets more challenging with each passing minute. You open the glove department of your car and pull out Yoongi's cd, admiring the beautiful signature marked in black ink on the disk.
Seesaw - Agustd 2018
It's crazy of you but you kind of miss him. Yoongi wasn't like anything you expected him to be, so deep and grounded while at the same time warm-hearted. He was incredibly handsome too. And when you touched his arm, eyes piercing into his, it was like you were being magnetically pulled to him.
Is that possible though? Sharing a magnetic force with practically a stranger?
Your contemplation is interrupted when the sound of your phone notification rings off. Finally, your order's ready. You toss the cd back into the glove box and head inside the pizza shop.
Tumblr media
"Hi, welcome to Little Slice of Heaven," the young lady at the counter greets you with a cheery smile. "How can I help you?"
"I have an order for __." You open your wallet and hand over your credit card. She takes it from you speedier than you like, ringing it up then returning it to you with a paper receipt.
"I'll go grab it for you." She swiftly turns around, nearly bumping into one of her coworkers. "Shit sorry!" The person gives a small grunt in response before mumbling an 'its fine, I got it'.
"Order for __."
You stash the receipt in your pocket, then look up to take the boxes of steaming hot pizza. "Yes, thank you so m–," You freeze at once at the familiar face in the iconic navy blue Little Slice of Heaven uniform.
"Yoongi?" He seems to be just as motionless as you when you say his name. "I didn't know..."
"I just started," he answers shortly. "It's uh, good to see you again. How have you been?"
"Oh you know, still alive. Pizza helps me." You chuckle to help break the ice. Yoongi doesn't laugh but you do catch his eyes softening the smallest bit. "What about you? How have you been?"
"Good. Music's good too." He runs a hand through his hair, a habit you're beginning to pick up from him. "I–sorry I must sound like an idiot. I didn't expect to see anyone I knew here tonight."
"You don't sound like an idiot. You said you just started working here right?"
He nods.
"Yoongi!" An older man with a navy blue visor on his head calls from one of the pizza ovens in the back. "I need you to deliver this to the lovely couple sitting at table 8. Times ticking!"
Yoongi looks at the man, then at you. He knows what he needs to do except the thought of letting you leave after getting the rare chance to see you again causes him to linger in place.
"It's okay," you try to ease him, despite also feeling conflicted to leave. "You're working. I come here often so I'll see you around." You're only able to take two steps before the same voice hollers to you.
"Wait, __. What are you doing tomorrow at 6?"
"It's Saturday so, probably watching re-runs of Friends. Why?"
For the first time, Yoongi lets out a hearty laugh and you're instantly reminded of his photo from the cafe last week; the one of him in the sky-blue cardigan with his guitar. His expression exudes the same joyful aura as if his two personas suddenly merge as one.
"I love Friends," he says. "The whole Ross and Rachel thing is driving me mad though, like why won't they–"
"Yoongi the food needs to go now!" His coworker yells at him again, wiping his sweat fro his brow. "Tell your girlfriend or whoever that is that you have work to do!"
"She's not my girlfriend!" Yoongi responds with rosy cheeks. "Sorry, I gotta get back to it. I know Friends is tough to compete with but do you think you'd have an hour to spare? We could–I could get a pizza for us to split. Already got your order down." He gives a lopsided grin as he jokes lightly.
"Okay." You break into a smile. "I wouldn't dream of passing up my comfort food." You sound calm but the back of your mind reels with uncertainty. Is he asking you out or is it the so-called "hang out", sometimes masked as a pre-date?
He reaches for the pad of paper on the counter next to him, scribbles something down, and tears it off to give it to you. "Here's my number. Feel free to text me if anything changes. No pressure though."
Once you take the paper from him, he disappears into the back of the kitchen before you can get another word out. Min Yoongi, you hum silently, timid yet takes initiative. Cute.
Tumblr media
You decide it's better to see Yoongi's proposal as a hang out rather than a date. It's not like he came out and said, "do you want to go out" or anything. So at 6 pm on the dot, you agree to meet him at Little Slice of Heaven. As promised, he brings a pizza for you to share.
He's already changed out of his work clothes by the time you arrive; sporting a white t-shirt, jeans, and a thin chain necklace. The basic look works on him.
"So I didn't get to ask you yesterday," you start, turning to Yoongi who sits on the swivel stool next to you. "How do you like it here and what made you come?"
He shrugs and places a slice of pizza on his paper plate. "Pays the bills. I was working as a waiter down on main street a few months ago. I chose to leave that place due to poor management and...I lack social skills, evidently."
"Come on, you do not." You refuse to believe it. "Anytime we've talked it's been pleasant so any naysayers probably don't even know what side's up."
Yoongi snorts in amusement. "We've only had two conversations __." He says it flatly yet it doesn't keep your cheeks from feeling flushed, warmth blooming in the pit of your belly. Your name sounds different from his lips this time.
"You're right, and both times you've shown great social skills."
"I think you're stretching it a little. As I recall I was a bit more reserved with you than usual. Must have been awkward for you."
"Not in the slightest," you deny. "There's nothing awkward about being reserved. In fact, sometimes it's better and it typically means you're a better listener than most. And if you were so awful, you wouldn't be working here right? This is food service too."
"Thanks for saying that." He glances down at his hands in his lap, unsure of how much you're saying rings true, then looks back up at you. "I don't need to talk with people as much as I do a server though. It's more like I hand them their pizza and wish them a good life."
"Well, I guess you make a point there. But trust me Yoongi, you don't lack social skills. Can I ask you something though? Weirdly off-topic."
"Shoot."
"It's about your photo from the cafe last week. It showed you in a blue cardigan with a smile on your face except when you came in to play that day..."
An unexpected grin forms on his face as he finishes your sentence. "I looked like I hated my life or something right? Or like Grumpy Bear from that kiddy cartoon, Caring Bears.
"Care Bears."
"Right, Care Bears." He chuckles lightly. "The music I tend to write shows my raw feelings and experiences. A song like Seesaw, as you've heard, is no exception, but I don't think my overall theme has to be dark as well. The image you saw shows the current version of me, the one who's liberated from those past experiences."
"That's extremely meaningful, Yoongi."
"As far as why I showed up in a giant black sweatshirt, it's because I wanted to dress comfortably. I always get a little nervous performing in front of a live audience so it helps. Especially since I'm only a new artist without a label supporting me. I was also a little sleepy from mixing beats the night before too, I won't lie."
"That makes so much sense. How long have you been making music for?"
"Since a teenager. Like thirteen."
"Seriously?" You nearly fall off your chair. Yoongi is a born genius it seems.
"Yeah. I never pursued being an independent artist until now. Resources and connections were pretty grim for me. Since becoming an adult I've made some progress. Still working to get my name out there though."
"I understand." You nod along. "Being an independent artist, you must have to do a lot to gain exposure. Have you considered uploading videos of yourself playing your songs on social media?"
"I've done some and they've been good. I'm actually trying to send my songs to a few record labels but I haven't heard back from any yet. It's been a good six months so I don't know. There's still one that I'm holding out hope for. I only sent my music to them a week ago."
"That's a shame they didn't contact you. Just means they missed out on Agustd which they will, without a doubt, be regretting later. Do you have an estimate on when the newest label will reach out to you?"
"No clue. They say it takes anywhere from a week to three months. By the way," he pauses. "I have to ask. Do you really like my music? I don't mean that rudely or anything."
"Hell yeah, I like it! You're honestly insanely talented and love it actually."
"God," Yoongi fakes an eye roll. "Don't tell me you're my first groupie."
You both share a laugh that can only be described as natural.
"Enough about me." He speaks first after your laughter settles down. "What do you do? Have any crazy hobbies?"
"I'm afraid I don't have any crazy hobbies at the moment. I work as a vet downtown and I don't have much free time unless it's to binge-watch movies on the weekend. I love my job though."
"Ah," Yoongi narrows his eyes as if coming to a drastic realization. "It's all coming together."
"What is?"
"The reason why you're so kind and stable." He gathers several napkins and hands them over to you when some of the water from your glass accidentally spills on the table. "No you have a bright energy to you, but it's not hyper. It's like you really care in a hospitable way. You work with animals which requires a lot of heart. Do you have any pets at home?"
"Yeah, I actually have two cats. Both siamese. I want to get a dog but right now I wouldn't be around to take care of it well. Cats are a little more independent." You wipe up the water with the napkins and continue. "Thanks for saying all that Yoongi. I'm not sure stable is the best way to describe me."
"Well, for what it's worth you're the most stable person I've met. I think everyone needs someone like you in their life."
"I–what kind of people are you hanging around?" You feel flustered so you do the first thing that comes to mind, nudge his shoulder playfully which he laughs at. "I'm not all that. I have faults like anyone else."
"Name one." He taps the table with a finger to make a point. "Dare you."
"I don't know, I dislike vacuuming my rug."
"Oh my god." He covers his mouth to feign shock. "Scandalous. I don't think we should eat together again after that. Wow."
"Stop it, that was a dumb one. I have stuff I swear. If this were a first date I'd be a bit appalled that you're asking me to list my faults. It isn't usually the time you try to pick each other apart."
"Actually, it sort of is to an extent. You have to observe each other right? So those so-called red flags will come up sooner than later to keep you from unnecessary pain and heartache later."
You maul on his words. "Point made. Wish I knew that three years ago," you hum. Yoongi seems to agree with you from the way he quietly nods.
"Ex-boyfriend?" he asks.
"Yup, what about you? Ex-girlfriend?"
He nods again and it puts an end to any further talk about exes or past relationships.
"By the way," Yoongi folds his arms against his chest. "I have a cat too. I got him two years ago at a shelter. He's pretty much my best friend."
The excitement on your face is impossible to conceal. Min Yoongi has a cat? You need to know everything about said cat right now.
"What's his name? Is he a long hair? You give me long-haired cat dad vibes." You're hasty— so sue you, you're a vet. Animals are sort of your wheelhouse.
"His name's Kiwi and he's an overly fed Russian Blue. He's six years old." Yoongi laughs and leans towards you with mirthful eyes. "If you want, I can introduce you to him." He cocks a brow and your shoulders perk up.
"Honest? I would actually die to see your cat."
Yoongi slides off his chair and tosses the empty pizza box in the trash. "Let's go to my place then."
"What?" You crickle the napkin in your hand and toss it on your paper plate. "Now?"
"Yeah now's as good a time as ever." He takes his keys from his jeans pocket and gestures for the door. "Don't worry, I won't make you stay for long."

“Someone looks happy today. Who’s got you smiling like that, darling?” You look over at Seokjin who greets you the second you walk into the office today, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips as he crosses his arms over his chest. “Was it a man?” He asks and you feel heat slowly rising upon your cheeks.
He takes note of that.
“Well actually, u-um,” you scratch the back of your head, trying to play it cool but knowing nothing can ever get past the Kim Seokjin.
“No way! You’re serious?” Someone else comes up from the other side of the room and you turn to find Jimin and Taehyung walking over, the older of the 95 liner holding a hand over his gaped mouth as if this was the most shocking news he’s ever heard in his life.
“I never knew you had a man in your life already, Y/N,” Taehyung says with an arm coming over to pull you into a headlock as he ruffles your hair.
“Tae!” You whine, pouting slightly at his antics. “I don’t have a man but there was this cute barista I saw just a few blocks away.”
“Damn! She’s now taken!” He smacks his hands over his heart in a dramatic gesture you have to push him off you a bit so the coffee in your hand doesn’t spill over.
“I’m not,” you reiterate.
“But there’s a chance, yeah?” Seokjin says as he takes your coffee cup without permission to show off the number written there. “He gave you his number.”
“That’s…” You avert your eyes, biting your lower lip.
“Ooh, look at that,” Jimin takes the cup in his hand, examining it with a playful snicker, “he drew a little heart.”
“Stop it guys, you’re embarrassing.” You try to take your coffee back, only they don’t give you a chance.
“Hey if it doesn’t work out, you can always come back into my arms to cry, yeah? I’ll always be right here to cheer you up.” Despite how playful he sounds right now, you know there’s always a high chance Taehyung means it more than anything. It doesn’t take over the fact that his constant flirting doesn’t always get you worked up, however.
“I-I don’t think I’ll be needing it but uh, thanks for the offer.”
“Well, whatever happens,” you see Seokjin take the coffee back from Jimin who’s still laughing over the little note the barista gave you, in order to hand it back to you, “as long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.”
You feel a light pat on your head, a gentle gesture he tends to do when he wishes to cheer you up.
Ah. How sweet.
You feel your heart skip a beat.
“...Thanks Jin.”
.
.
.
“I never took you as a coffee person.” Yoongi, on the more quiet side, as compared to the rest of the boys, gives you a small raise in his brow when he takes note of the coffee you have on your desk for the third day in a row. “I thought you preferred tea or...other things.”
You did once speak on drink preferences though you never thought Yoongi would ever take note of them seriously because they were always just small talks that led to no direction. Yet here he is, raising a brow at the coffee you have.
“Is it the barista?” He asks and you know by now the boys probably all know your encounter with the cute barista a few blocks down the street. When you feel your cheeks heating up, you hear Yoongi let out a small chuckle. “I get it, Y/N. Feelings always start off with the infatuation you have for someone, but you have to keep in mind not to force anything you dislike for someone else. What’re you going to do when you’re unhappy just to keep someone else happy? That isn’t exactly healthy, now is it?”
“You sound like my mom always giving me life lessons,” Hoseok comes in with rolled eyes over his hyung’s words. “Don’t listen to him, Y/N.”
“You know I’m right.”
“Even if you are, it’s not like they can’t talk things over once they get closer. Isn’t that right?” Hoseok turns to you, putting you on the spot and making you freeze up.
“W-well, yes. I suppose so.”
“Well.” Yoongi lets out a sigh. “If you aren’t going to drink the coffee, just order a black coffee and I’ll drink it for you the next time you return.”
And so it becomes a routine where you’re rushing in the morning, ordering the black coffee just to have a small conversation with the cute barista before it’s time for work and once you’re in, Yoongi takes the coffee for you, drinking it.
For a good time it goes on like this; the constant teasing from the boys, Namjoon scolding them, and Yoongi sitting back to enjoy the show with his free coffee every morning.
Though at times you feel Taehyung’s flirty comments are much more common than usual, Seokjin’s a little gentler, Jimin’s a little touchier, Jungkook’s a bit more pouty and cranky, Hoseok’s by your side more often, Yoongi more willing to engage in conversations rather than his usual responses of “mhm” and “yes” or “no,” and Namjoon being more observant.
Perhaps it’s the change in the seasons, perhaps it’s the new project the team’s working on, or perhaps they’re just looking out for you because you’re still a bit new to everything and they don’t want you getting hurt or taken advantage of.
They’re kind after all. Ever since the first day you joined the company since your move here, the boys have been nothing but kind and welcoming towards you, helping you out in areas you need to improve on, exchanging numbers, offering to hang out outside work hours, and just anything and everything for you in order to help you feel more comfortable.
It’s sweet having people looking out for you.
“Date?” One late night with just you and Jungkook left behind, you decide to relay the news to him as the two of you finally finish off for the night. “Well finally, seems like that bastard wasn’t ever going to pick up the guts to ask you out.” He sounds a bit irritated, as he usually would when the topic of the barista is brought up. “So then, where you going?”
“He said he’ll be taking me out to dinner.”
“Dinner, huh? So you’ll be dressing up all nice and pretty for him, huh?”
“Well-” You cut yourself off, looking off to the side with a hand hovered over your cheeks. “It’s..the normal thing to do, right? When..one goes on a date?”
“I guess,” he shrugs, sounding bored with his hands in his pockets.
“I haven’t done this in a while, I’m kind of nervous. Though to be honest, I don’t really enjoy one-on-one meal dates too much, especially with someone I don’t really know that well. I mean even though I find him cute and nice it’s just…hm, I don’t know. It’s just nerve-wracking I guess.”
“Really? Dinner dates aren’t your thing?” Jungkook looks over at you, a bit surprised.
“I just get too much social anxiety,” you chuckle nervously his way. “I mean, there’s always a chance my date might ditch me and I’ll end up sitting there being awkwardly stared at by other customers and the waiter will also be placed in an awkward position. Not to mention the food choices are way too many to choose from and you can never really guess what will be good and what will not. Plus I’m just an awkward person in general when it comes to one-on-one interaction over a formal occasion. What if he finds me boring?”
“He’d be a fool if he did,” he mutters under his breath.
“Huh?”
Jungkook clears his throat, speaking louder this time. “I said that’s stupid to be worrying over.”
“Oh.” You blink. “Is it?”
“I’m not saying it’s–” He pauses, takes a breath in and out before speaking again. “What I meant was, you shouldn’t worry about that because you’re not boring. Well, not to me.”
“Ha ha, that totally helped release all of my anxieties at once.”
“I’m just saying,” he purses his lips into a small pout, “I mean I get awkward with people all the time because I’m an idiot who doesn’t know how to keep a conversation going but I’ve never been uncomfortable with you. You’ve never made me feel bored and I’ve never had a thought of wanting to get out of a conversation with you so it’d be dumb if that bastard did. I’m the most awkward person on Earth. I’m sure you’ll do fine with him.”
You giggle at the way Jungkook seems to shy away after giving you a few compliments, his ears a little red, head turned off to the side but you catch sight of the slight blush on his cheeks under the night sky.
“Thanks, Jungkook.”
“Come on,” he rushes forward, opening the passenger side of the door for you in order to snap out of his embarrassment. “Get in, I’ll take you home.”
.
.
.
“Uh, what? You want me to spy on Y/N?” Namjoon looks the maknaes dead in the eyes before turning his back to them, returning to the coffee maker in the break room. “No. I’m on a break, stop bothering me.”
“Oh come on hyung!” Taehyung whines as he tugs on the hem of Namjoon’s blazer.
“If you’re that desperate to see how her date goes, why don’t you go yourself?” He pauses. “Actually, that’s a bad idea.”
“Yeah exactly! Taehyung and I both know we’d do a horrible job and get noticed right away, which will put Y/N in an awkward situation, and Jungkook here has anger issues so if that barista does something wrong, he’s also bound to get noticed.”
“Listen, I know I have my problems but hearing it out loud still hurts, you know.”
“The truth hurts, maknae.” Jimin pats his head, causing him to frown even deeper. “And Yoongi hyung,” he turns back to Namjoon again, “he’s also bound to punch the dude if something goes wrong. Jin and Hoseok hyung are great candidates but they’re working that day. You’re the only one available, hyung.”
“I’m also working that day.”
“You get out early.”
“How is it that you know my schedule so well, Park Jimin?” Coffee done and set in a cup, Namjoon turns back to the three of them, letting out a heavy sigh. “Can’t you just let it go? Y/N can’t keep staying under our wings forever. She’s a grown woman capable of taking care of herself.”
“Yes, yes, but what if something goes wrong?” Jungkook says, the three of them still holding their stance.
“Seems like you want it to go wrong.” Namjoon takes a sip of his drink, staring them down.
“Whaaat? Now why would I want that? Y/N’s happiness matters most of all and if that happiness is with the barista, why would I wanna intervene?”
“You’re gritting your teeth.”
He avoids eye contact, not even wanting to deny Namjoon’s accusation as he places his hands in his pockets.
In the end, the maknaes’ persuasion skills are much more in effect as they manage to rope Namjoon into their shenanigans, so when the day comes, the man finds himself being there to be the witness to how your date with the barista goes.
And unfortunately on your end, it doesn’t go too well.
“You…have a girlfriend?” You look at the phone he has in his hand when he turns around, surprised you caught him in the act when he excused himself to pick up a call, only to leave you in that restaurant for some time so you decided to step out to check up on him and now here you are, staring at a man who holds onto a dumb expression because he got caught.
“Who’s that?” You hear a voice from the other line of his phone and Woosung turns around for a second again, putting the phone back to his ear as he whispers “I’ll call you back” before turning back shamelessly around with an awkward smile.
You bite your lower lip, feeling like a fool as your shoulders keep their tense state and you take a step back. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Things were rocky,” he says, “we still are–”
“That doesn’t make it right to go around and sweeten up to other girls,” you cut him off, not wanting to hear the excuses. “If you wanted another relationship, you should have broken up with your girlfriend first but instead here you are, making a fool out of me, using me as a side piece. If things went back to normal with your girlfriend, you were just going to toss me off to the side, weren’t you? Or use me as a secret affair?”
“Y/N-”
“Don’t say my name, please.” You take a few more steps back, feeling lightheaded and done. “Don’t contact me again. Delete my number, please.”
You turn to walk off, only to have your wrist pulled back.
“Hear me out-”
“I don’t want to hear anything!” You try to pull your arm back to get away from him but his grip is too tight for you to actually do much. “Let me go. You have a girlfriend.”
“I’ll break up with her,” Woosung tries to concede but you can only scoff in his face.
“Are you serious? If you can go around her back and try to get with other girls, you can do that to me too.”
“Y/N-”
“Let go,” you beg, feeling your voice crack as the tears finally begin to form upon the forceful way he holds onto you, not wanting to release his grip no matter how much you try to escape. “Please, I don’t want anything to do with you anymore, I-”
Just as you feel a drop of tear about to fall from your eye, a foreign hand is placed right upon your eyes to block your vision, the sling of arm he has on you pulling you back against his chest and a voice rumbles from the depths of his throat.
“Do not ever waste your tears on spoiled milk, sweetheart, do not let him think he has power over you,” the voice says, a voice you recognize, a voice that begins to fight off the fear you had thinking you were alone and no one would help you out of this situation. Suddenly the hand isn’t so foreign anymore and you find yourself relaxing a bit into that chest of his.
“Mind letting go of that precious hand, buddy?” Namjoon says, his voice dropping an octave when he addresses your admirer. “We don’t want to make a scene here now do we? Unless you do, and in that case, I can definitely give you a show.”
When he doesn’t say a word in response, too frightened at how grave Namjoon sounds, your rescuer lets out a scoff before giving you a squeeze on the shoulder to let you know that you were to be leaving.
He turns you around, taking his hand off your eyes, but not from your shoulder, and guiding you away from the scene, knowing not to leave you alone until the two of you were finally away from the sight of Woosung.
“You alright?” Only then does Namjoon let you go and take a step back, watching to make sure you don’t look too uncomfortable.
Yet his hands being placed on you wasn’t the problem, it was the fact that you just found out the guy you thought was interested in you had a girlfriend all along, and in the shameful feeling you’re suddenly forced to face tonight, your head lowers to the ground, unable to look Namjoon in the eyes.
“Sorry you had to…see that.”
“Why are you apologizing? You have nothing to apologize for.” He hands you a tissue to which you take, wiping your tears despite it still coming down, and when it seems as if they won’t stop any time soon, Namjoon takes the initiative to take a step forward and pull you into his arms, embracing you in the way you need it.
You bury your face into his chest as he holds you, the night breeze flying past with nothing but the sound of a few cars passing by and your little sniffles, and in this very moment, all you can think is that Namjoon’s arms feel so warm, so comfortable, and so kind.
Just what you need.
Just what you needed.
“Sorry,” you croak out again, voice sounding a little more broken but Namjoon shakes his head as he holds you tighter.
“It’s alright.”
“I probably look like a fool,” you say and yet he shakes his head.
“None of this was your fault.”
“I should have known,” you pull back just slightly to wipe at your eyes, “all men, whether in Korea or elsewhere, has the audacity to be such assholes.”
“Hmm, you’re right. In one way or another, everyone’s the same.”
You look up at him, sight a little blurry. “Why’re you not defending men or saying ‘not all men’?”
“Because that’d piss you off,” you scoff, “and I know how we can be.”
“But you…” You bite onto your lower lip, staring down at his white dress shirt as tear stains and some bits of your makeup managed to fall upon them — a sight he doesn’t care to pay attention to. You now feel embarrassed for a different reason. “I probably look like a mess right now, I’m so sorry,” you cry, hating the sight of your mascara wet on your fingers.
“You’re cute,” Namjoon chuckles and you give him a little punch on the chest, wanting to hide your embarrassment and only causing him to laugh a little more.
“How’d you know to even find me? How’d you even get there in the first place? It was like you were already there.”
“Well…” When he hesitates, you look back up at him, blinking.
“Don’t tell me Jungkook set you up to this?”
“Not just him.”
The maknaes. “Of course it’s them.” You let out a sigh. “I’m kind of surprised with how protective they seem to be, they didn’t come here themselves and sent you instead.”
“They sent me because they knew if something went wrong, they wouldn’t be able to stop themselves before that barista has a couple of bruises on his face.”
You laugh a little at that sentiment. “Well aren’t they aware.”
“If I tell them you cried, I wonder what they’d do.”
“Don’t!” You quickly say, grabbing a fistful of his shirt to make sure he knows just how serious you are. “I already told them where Woosung works at so if they know what he did, who knows what they’d do.”
“Are you that worried?”
“They have absolutely no care for what other people think of them so of course I’m worried.” You quickly wipe the remaining tears left on your face. “I don’t want to be the reason someone gets hurt.”
“I suppose I can leave out a few details.”
“Thanks, Namjoon.” You look around the empty streets of the night, feeling a bit awkward now that things are starting to calm down. “And..thanks…for being there…..and here, right now.”
Namjoon lets out a light chuckle. “Mr. Bang told us to look out for our newbie, didn’t he?” He says, a light reminder of your company CEO’s words to them when you first joined. “Though even without him saying so, we’d still be taking care of you.”
You smile up his way, knowing that if he hadn’t been here tonight, a different outcome would have occurred and you aren’t sure how you would have been able to deal with things were it not for him.
.
.
.
“Sorry you won’t be getting your usual free coffee anymore.” When you take a seat beside Yoongi the next day, something tells you he probably knows the actual full story about what happened the night before unlike the three younger ones. Namjoon probably felt it safe to tell the older ones and that you wouldn’t blame him for it.
He’s right.
Before the man can reply, Jimin’s sliding his chair on over with a comment of his own. “Who cares? Hyung can get his own coffee and there’s always plenty of fishes in the sea.”
“He’s right, I’m a fish,” Taehyung says with a smirk sent your way. “I’m a great fish.”
You laugh a little at that. “It’s alright guys. He was cute but I forgot that pretty faces don't always mean pretty hearts.”
“I’m literally right in front of you but go off.” Taehyung sits himself on Jimin’s lap with a roll of his eyes, causing you to giggle.
“I knew he was a red flag,” Jungkook joins in with his arms leaning over your desk. “Everything about the dude screamed red flag.”
“You never even met him.”
“Doesn’t mean I can’t tell,” he argues. “If you ask me, even Taehyung’s a better candidate.”
“See, what’d I tell you?” The older one is quick to agree as his eyes light up. “Why don’t you give me a chance, sweetheart? I’d never break your heart.”
“That’s a lie,” you laugh.
He pouts. “Why would you say that? You don’t trust me?”
“I’m just saying it’s inevitable to break someone’s heart whether you mean to or not. That’s just what happens when you’re in a relationship right? Not everything is smooth sailing.”
“Well, you can break my heart anytime.”
“Alright, alright, stop bothering me and get back to your stations already.” When Yoongi finally speaks up among the conversation you seemed to attract without meaning to, the three boys are quick to obey their hyung’s words, sitting up and scattering to their destination after a quick wave of goodbye your way.
You yourself were just about to return to your own station when Yoongi stops you mid-way.
“By the way,” he starts, allowing you to look back at him, “Stop apologizing, you’ll wear yourself out.”
It’s blunt the way he says it but you know that Yoongi always means well so it makes your insides warm hearing him giving you kind words in return to what you initially came to him for.
.
.
.
“So, what do you think about this?”
Hoseok takes a glance at your computer screen before looking back at you, whose eyes seem to look slightly dreary despite the excitement settled in them.
“I think you need to take a break,” he says and you’re quick to frown.
“Come on, Hoseok, just look it over for a second, yeah? I promise I’ll stop bothering after.”
“You said that last time.”
“I really promise this time!”
“No, you’re lying,” he says with a poke at your forehead, forcing your head to get pushed back away from him. “You’ve been working too hard these days you might actually collapse soon and what kind of sunbae would I be if I didn’t look out for my hoobae’s health?”
“But I’m fine-”
He knows all too well the sudden shift in focus you’ve had on work ever since the failed date with the barista down the street, a sort of focus that forces you to work much too hard and way too much than needed.
“Come on, it’s almost midnight.”
“And?”
You’ve even forgotten what tomorrow implies.
He takes ahold of your chair, rolling it away from your computer so he can make sure everything’s saved before shutting it off, causing you to groan in response, yet when he goes on to get your jacket, you’re reluctantly obedient.
“Have you forgotten what today is?” He asks and you look at your phone.
“The twenty-second of January. Why?”
“What’s tomorrow?”
“The twenty-third.”
He rolls his eyes. “Of course you’ve forgotten.”
“Forgotten what?” Wide eyes, innocent and curious, totally oblivious as you allow him to help you put your arms through the sleeves of your jacket.
Hoseok looks out the window and you follow his eyes, wondering why the night sky has caught his attention, but when there’s nothing there and he says nothing in reply to your question, you go on to gather your things just as he checks his watch.
“Are you free right now?” He asks, not looking up from his watch.
“I have a few minutes to spare.”
“Just a few?”
You chuckle. “I’m free, Hoseok.”
“Great.” He takes a step from where you are gathering your things, sliding up from behind and leans right into your ear. “Happy birthday, Y/N.”
It’s so soft and quiet against your ear but you know you haven’t misheard a thing just as the phone on the desk lights up and you see that it’s 12:00 am, the twenty-third of January; your 26th birthday.
“Come on then,” he takes your bag before you can protest, walking off to have you chasing him right behind, “we’ve got plans.”
“Plans?” You blink, hurrying to keep up. “Wait, what do you mean ‘we’?”
Yet you receive no answer as he takes you in his car and drives off with a grin on his face, leaving you wondering with anticipation for what’s to happen.
It doesn’t take long before the two of you arrive at some sort of park you don’t think you’ve ever visited before.
“Why are we here?” You ask and yet all you receive is Hoseok’s hand asking you to just trust him and follow along. You take his hand and he leads you toward the inner part of the park until you’re standing right before a fountain. “How pretty,” you say, wondering why you never took the chance to ever come to such a place before. “Hoseok, you–”
When you turn around to address the man who brought you here in the first place, there’s no one in sight.
“Hoseok?” You call for him, confused as you begin to look around.
Just then, lights begin to appear.
Pretty little fairy lights decorated along the lampposts and hedges of the part. Bright white and golden all around, leaving you to only stare in awe at the sudden burst of lights gleaming all around while you stand in the center of it all, heart picking up its pace at just how pretty everything looks.
All for you.
No one’s ever done something as grand as this for you, not even your closest friend,s and yet here you are, cherished by people whom you’ve known for only a year or so.
“Do you like it?”
You turn at the familiar voice to see Hoseok with a grin, and just behind him stands the rest of the guys who share the same sentiment.
“Like it?” Words can’t even begin to describe. “I..”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Are you crying?!” Seokjin’s the first to rush up to you when he sees your hands raising up to your face, taking them in his and blowing his warm breath onto them to warm it up as Yoongi presses both his gloved hands upon your cheeks. “Don’t cry now, this was supposed to make you happy.”
“I am happy,” you say as a few tears slip. “I’m really happy.”
“Are you sure because crying usually means—”
“I promise,” you cut Yoongi off when you see the serious frown he has on his face, a sign of worry as he frets over your tears. “I promise I’m happy.”
“You have such an odd way of proving you’re happy,” he grumbles under his breath, causing you to let out a laugh.
“We have cake but I don’t think you’d be able to blow out the candles in this windy environment.”
January is still Winter after all.
“That’s alright,” you say to Jimin, “we can just pretend the fire’s on.”
And so he goes on to get the cake with Taehyung in toll, and in the middle of the pretty park they’ve taken the time to show you, a soft birthday song rings in the air, and when that’s over, you intertwine your fingers together for a wish before blowing out the imaginary fire on the candles.
January is a bit cold, a little worse when the moon has risen high in the sky, but tonight you feel anything but the coldness, not when these seven boys have taken the time to dedicate themselves to making sure you’re having a good time.
.
.
.
“You know if you keep staring at me, you might burn a hole in my face.”
“Hm? What are you talking about?” Hoseok starts, his chin still propped upon his hand, eyes shamelessly staring without a hint of movement anytime soon. You let out a little chuckle, flustered, and hit him lightly on the chest. “What? Do I make you flustered?”
“You’re almost as bad as Taehyung sometimes.”
“What’s wrong with a little flirting?”
“I’m going to take it the wrong way one day,” you tell him as you get up from your seat to head on over to the printer where a few papers await their turn. “I know you’re all joking though but sometimes, well, admittedly,” you hide your face behind your hair, staring straight at the printing machine to finish its job, “my heart does skip a beat...or two.”
“Really?” He says it so nonchalantly you think your reaction is the least bit of his concern. “Hm, then it’s working,” until he says those words.
“Huh?” You look up, flustered, with blinking eyes. “What do you mean it’s…working?”
Hoseok sends you a smirk just as Taehyung slides up along his side, arm draping over the older man’s shoulder with a mirrored smirk.
“Oh I think you know what that means, darling,” the younger one states, his brows wiggling playfully.
You take the collection of papers that have been printed out for you and huddle them close to your chest, not fully comprehending them only because you wouldn’t want to create a misunderstanding and interpret things wrong when it’s actually meant to have a different meaning.
“I..I-I..”
Before you can finish your stuttering, however, a roll of paper comes along to smack both Hoseok and Taehyung on the head.
“Stop flirting during work hours, you know better than that,” Namjoon warns with a firm expression.
“But you know our girl will never get it if we don’t get to the point,” Hoseok argues.
“The point?” You blink.
“Then get to the point.” Yoongi rolls his eyes, looking exasperated by the antics of the group as he joins the crowd with Jungkook, just as Jimin and Seokjin walk through the doors.
It’s clear the seven of them all know exactly what’s going on while you remain standing there in confusion, left to try to interpret things under your own limited understanding unless they decide they want to come out and just say whatever it is they’re holding out on.
“See, look at her. She’s confused.” Yoongi points out, his head beckoning your way to make them look at you.
You freeze under their stares, not…uncomfortable but more so…shy.
“She’s not confused, she knows exactly what’s happening,” Seokjin speaks up, a slight grin resting on his lips as he walks a few steps forward to take your papers for you. They were meant for him in the first place. “She’s just afraid it might turn out to be false,” he says, purposely staring you down with that glint of playfulness in his eyes.
“Now we don’t want any miscommunications around here, do we?” Jimin sneaks up behind you, hands pressed upon your shoulders. “So why don’t you tell our little one exactly what you mean, hyung?” He’s baiting Hoseok, that slyness in his tone not being able to escape your ears especially when he’s so close to you.
As for the older one, he simply remains calm, instead glancing at the maknae. “Didn’t you want to do the honors? You’ve been waiting for the perfect moment, right?”
Jungkook’s cheeks turn red, his face turning to the side in an instant once the attention is brought down to him instead, and while Jimin snickers, Taehyung holds his laugh, Seokjin hides a grin behind his hand, and Namjoon’s expression turns fond, you find the gentleman who became the first friend you made ever since moving to Korea and working alongside him as a new employee to be quite cute.
He’s always been cute from the very beginning.
You’re the closest in age after all, so with him feeling more comfortable to approach you and make you feel comfortable, you found his company to be a delight you enjoyed looking forward to each day you came to work.
And now here he is, almost a year later, flustered like a teenage boy trying to hand his crush a love letter.
And the boys are eating it up.
“Jungkook?” So you call out to him, knowing he may need a little bit of encouragement to tell you the thing he needs to say, all the while preparing your heart just in case the answer you’re seeking turns out to be wrong and you were just misinterpreting things. “It’s alright, take your time.”
“That’s right, maknae, we’ve got all the time in the world.”
You lightly hit Taehyung on the chest. “You’re not helping the boy.”
He laughs in response. “You already know what he’s trying to say so why not save him the embarrassment?”
“Do I?”
“Oh, would you look at that?” Namjoon raises a brow, impressed. “Someone’s feeling cocky.”
“Huh, no I didn’t mean that!” You’re quick to say, hands rushing to wave it off as you become flustered again. “J-Jungkook I didn’t-” You turn to him, stumbling out your words. “Well, I mean, I think I..I-I don’t exactly..-But if it’s what I think it is..-But if it isn’t, uh-”
“Oh god, they’re hopeless,” Jimin laughs aloud before simply squeezing your shoulders as he leans in. “Why don’t we stop the act and just become ours, hm? I think you know we all feel the same way at this point.”
“Hyung what the hell?!” Jungkook suddenly shouts with his mouth held agape, offended his moment was stolen from him.
“You were taking too long!”
“That doesn’t mean you can take the spotlight!”
In the midst of their little dispute, all you can hear is Jimin’s short yet meaningful confession in your ears, one that seems to make your heart race more than any man has ever made it beat before and you stand there right in the center, eyes unblinking, feeling as if the world is slowing down as you hear each beat your heart drums aloud for you.
“So what do you say?!” Taehyung jumps in, leaving Hoseok’s side to drape his arm around you instead.
“You’re both so annoying!” Jungkook yells, his brows furrowed deeply as his lips jut into a pout.
With cheeks heated and heart set aflame, you take the pouty man’s hand and look him straight in the eyes, taking a moment to calm him down so that the whole room can fall silent, before you turn to look at them all, hands trembling a bit when you say;
“Mmn, I’ll…I can…..yeah.”
Their faces brighten in an instant, and in that moment you realize despite how brave and nonchalant they all may seem to appear on the outside, perhaps deep within their hearts, they were just as nervous and frightened of what your answer may be.
And for that you say the words that Jungkook had been meaning to say but was robbed of the opportunity.
“I like you. I like you so…so much.”
.
.
.
Two years later
“Mr. Bang approved the proposal and he told me he’d be able to connect me with some people and-” you let out a scream of delight as you jump around before Seokjin, taking his hands along with you for him to see just how excited you are right now. “I’m ranking up Jin! I’m ranking up! And soon the company’s going to skyrocket and my efforts will be rewarded! It is rewarded! It’s being rewarded!”
Despite the onlookers of passersby taking quick glances at the two of you as you jump for joy, Seokjin simply smiles fondly at the pretty girl before him, looking her happiest and knowing he’d never want to rain on her parade and cast that look aside.
“Look at that, my little rockstar all grown up,” he says with a smile so gentle and fond of you you think you might fall in love with him all over again.
“Are you proud?” You ask and he chuckles as if the answer was that obvious and did not warrant a question.
“So proud,” he reaffirms your thoughts with hands cupping your cheeks and bringing his nose to playfully graze it with yours before he proudly lands a short yet sweet kiss on your lips.
“Jin, don’t do that in public,” you back away just a little, now noticing the people who’re just trying to walk the street.
Yet Seokjin laughs at you. “I thought you enjoyed public displays of affection.”
“I never said that,” you say as you take his hand and begin to walk off towards the apartment building the eight of you reside in, “that’s Taehyung and Hoseok. And Yoongi doesn’t care about anything so whether it’s embarrassing or not, he’ll do it if he’s in the mood — which can get a little frustrating.”
“Does it?”
“It does. Though now that I think about it, I think all of you except Namjoon and I care about modesty when it comes to displaying affections publicly.”
Seokjin raises a brow. “Jungkook too?”
“He enjoys seeing my reactions!” You say with a huff. “But then when I get him flustered, he goes on a whole rant as if he doesn’t do it frequently to me. Couldn’t you talk to him for me? He’d listen to you.”
“You think he’d listen to me?”
“You’re right, never mind, he never listens to you.”
“I listen well,” just as the elevator doors pop open, someone approaches the two of you from behind, their head propping in between your two bodies, “there’s just a time and place for everything.”
Seokjin rolls his eyes at Jungkook’s response as the three of you walk into the elevator. “It’d be good if you can listen to your elders, Jungkook.”
“Come on now, don’t start giving me life lessons again. It’s just that sometimes tuning some people out is the best thing to do.”
“Excuse me?” You hide your laugh behind a hand at Seokjin’s offended expression but he catches you quickly. “And what’re you doing teaming up with him? You were against him just a few seconds ago,” he says, snaking his arm around your waist to pull you in as you let out a yelp at his tickles.
“You can’t win against our maknae bond, hyung,” Jungkook snickers as he takes your other side, wrapping his arm around you as well.
“Stop, you’re going to suffocate me.”
Just then, the ding to the elevator is heard and you take their moment of distraction to escape their clutches, quick to rush out the doors and run for your apartment door.
When the door opens after unlocking the code, you run right in towards the first person you see, shoes and all.
“Yoongi catch!”
He looks like he’s just gotten up from a nap and yet when he sees you running towards him at full speed, he doesn’t think twice before his arms are instinctively holding you up when you jump onto him successfully.
“What’re you doing back early?” He yawns when another voice chimes in.
“Yeah, you’re not supposed to be back until an hour later,” Namjoon says.
You narrow your eyes. “Not happy at my early arrival?”
“I was trying to surprise you with a cake,” Taehyung yells from the kitchen, to which you turn to see both him and Jimin busy with frostings and cake batter.
“Tae? Baking?” You get down from Yoongi’s stronghold to walk towards them as Hoseok comes around to take your coat.
Taehyung pouts. “Are you doubting my skills? Why don’t you doubt Jimin?”
“Because we all know I’m a great baker.”
“Y/N, shoes.” Seokjin warns from where he stands, pointed eyes your way, stopping you just before you step into the kitchen.
Hoseok helps you out of them so you thank him with a kiss on his cheek.
“Thanks.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he nods as he walks over to the shoe rack.
“What’s the cake for?” You step into kitchen territory once approved, peeking over Jimin’s side as he focuses on decorating the cake and seeing the words ‘congratulations’ on it. “Wha..but I didn’t even tell you what the results were.”
“Do we even have to hear it?” Jimin chuckles, stopping midway to give you a kiss on the head.
“You were that confident I’d do well?” Your lower lip juts out, feeling touched by their actions.
“Oh baby, we knew,” Taehyung says, kissing you on the cheek.
“Why is it that you guys spoil me so much? You’re going to overwhelm me.”
“Because you’re our girl, why else?”
Such a calm answer, so straightforward and simple as if that was obvious from the very beginning. They’ve always been like this; considerate and sweet, and when Taehyung pokes your nose and leaves frosting there and you chase him after to exact revenge, when Namjoon scolds the two of you in a calm voice and Jimin shouts at the both of you to not make a mess, Jungkook laughing in the corner, wanting to join in but Seokjin pulling him back, all the while Hoseok and Yoongi simply stands back observing it all, the happiness that bloomed from the very moment you met the seven of them and how they’ve managed to continue allowing you to live in these sweet moments, you know that you will never care for anything else as long as they remain by your side until the very end.
Nothing else in this world matters more than their love and support.

chpt. 2: but first, fieldwork
september 22, 2004
You've been having strange dreams. Normally, you don't remember most of your dreams, but these have been oddly vivid and long-lasting, like the lingering stench of a cigarette that sticks to your clothes.
In some, you're wandering through a forest, wading through a thick mist. No, not wandering, because it feels like you're searching for something, you just don't know what.
In others, you're submerged in murky green water. Tendrils of seagrass like twisting trees brush against your ankles. And there's a sound reverberating through the water, something like chittering and groaning at the same time.
When you wake up, the window above your bed is open, though you don't remember unlatching it last night. Just outside the glass is a canopy of green, bright and vigorous from the early dew.
You pull the window shut and dismiss the dreams completely from your mind, because you have things to do. Today is your first day of fieldwork with Yoongi, the botanist.
Yoongi is punctual, which you very much like. He arrives at the meeting spot three minutes early. Luckily, you were there ten minutes early.
"G'morning," he mumbles, his voice still raspy with sleep. His hair is ruffled and his eyes are slightly droopy. He's wearing dark jeans and a flannel, but appears comfortable in the frigid air.
"Morning, thanks for coming," you say, handing him the iced americano and glazed bun you just picked up from the coffee shop.
Cat's Den, it's called. The same barista from your previous visit was working, and he seemed just as cheerful.
"Thank you," Yoongi says with new life in his voice, gratefully sipping from his drink.
You inform him that your first stop will be the residence of Mrs. Bradley. You want him to see the strange fungus in person to get the most accurate identification.
The two of you pile into your Honda CRX. It's a beater car, with scratches on the exterior and ripped seats. You've had it ever since you were a teenager, but the engine has held up throughout the years.
When you ask Yoongi if he's heard of the death of Michael Bradley, he just scrunches his brows.
"I think it was in the paper once," he says. "Something about household cleaners and chemicals. The mayor kept it buttoned up, apparently."
Again, the mention of the mayor. She kept the case under wraps, but clearly she trusts Yoongi to know about it since she recommended him to you.
"Hmm, well Mrs. Bradley won't submit to questioning so far," you say, rattling with the car as it traverses over a ridge in the dirt road.
"So far?" Yoongi prompts, and you can hear the slight amusement in his tone.
The corner of your mouth tugs up in a barely concealed smirk. "I can be very persistent," you add.
You stop the car a block away from their house. Yoongi follows you dutifully when you exit wordlessly and make you way onto their lawn. The ring of mushrooms is still there. In fact, it appears to have gotten wider.
You drop to one knee and begin taking pictures.
"Won't Mrs. Bradley get upset?" Yoongi asks, looking into the dark windows of the house.
"She leaves for work at five a.m." you reply. "We'll be finished long before she gets back."
He doesn't reply, because the mushrooms have snagged almost every ounce of his attention.
"Very peculiar," he mutters to himself.
"Can you identify them?" you ask, trying not to divulge how much you're waiting on his reply.
Yoongi pulls a retractable magnifying glass from his pocket and flips it open, dropping to the damp earth beside you.
"Infundibuliform cap shape," he says, more to himself than to you. But from what you've gathered from the book, it means a "deeply depressed" cap shape. In this case, it makes the cap look like a set of tendrils. Reaching out.
Yoongi takes out a pair of tweezers and turns the mushroom this way and that, examining it.
Something catches your eye.
"Pores and gills?" you say. Typically mushrooms have one or the other, but this one has a membrane covered in small holes as well as an underside full of thin openings.
"False gills, ridges," Yoongi supplements, deep in concentration. "Gills can be detached, but ridges are built into the structure."
"Is that common among mushrooms?" you ask.
"Hmm, not entirely sure. Not a mycologist," he replies, snipping off one of the mushrooms and dropping it into a specimen bag.
A part of you lights up inside. It looks like he's going to help you with this whole thing, judging by his interest in the strange fungi.
You're greatly appreciative, because reading that book on mushrooms was not exactly the most effortless research endeavor. It was plenty interesting, but still chock full of scientific terminology that you aren't familiar with.
"I have a friend back at the university who can take a closer look at this," Yoongi says, rising to a stand.
A flutter in your stomach. This is coming along nicely. The more professional opinions you can get, the better.
"Take a look at this," you say, leading him to the rotted tree trunk.
You watch as his delicate features twist, perplexed. He really is very pretty, but you shouldn't be thinking such things.
"Is this common among trees?" you ask a little hesitantly. It's such a shame to break his concentration when he looks like that.
"Not that I know of," he mutters, taking a tentative step closer.
You did a bit of research on tree rot, but nothing you saw looked quite like this. Wood, even rotted wood, has a splintered appearance. This wood looks almost wet, maybe even flesh-like. It looks, and smells, like an infected wound.
You take plenty of pictures.
"Can I get a copy of those?" Yoongi asks, looking at you with wide, eager eyes. A cat that's caught sight of a treat.
"Yes, of course," you reply with only the slightest bit of difficulty.
"Thank you." He flashes you a gummy smile. Fuck.
"Okay," you blurt out suddenly, pretending to check your watch. "Let's get moving."
Your next location is the sight of Jarvis Laplan's death.
The forest, you've learned thanks to Yoongi's kind direction, has been unofficially divided into sections by the surrounding civilians. There's the "North Star" area, mostly made up of sparse trees and grasses. This is where most of the residential homes are backdropped against, including Bradley's.
Then "Gunman's," an area southwest of North Star. Aptly named, this is the designated hunting grounds, clearly labeled and fenced. A few residences outline Gunman's, including Laplan's. But Laplan wasn't found in Gunman's, he was found in Ulthar's Grove.
"Ulthar's Grove," south of Gunman's and absolutely NOT a hunting area. Apparently, local stray cats and other rodents flock to this area, roaming about freely and building nests in hollow tree stumps. Children and teenagers can sometimes be found playing in this area, because of the several residences tucked into its borders and the relative safety compared to other areas of the forest.
Then, at the center of it all, Lurking Lake. Aptly named, it is not well-inhabited and generally avoided by locals. A naturally formed lake, it is infested with algae, an invasive species of eel-like fish, and characterized by a distinctive musky smell.
You and Yoongi enter into Ulthar's Grove, weaving through gnarled trees and mossy stones.
As if he can't help it, Yoongi points out the names of the local flora as you pass them. The scientific names and the common names, seemingly for your benefit. It's quite amusing, watching his face light up when he recognizes a familiar species.
And you learn a lot, taking as many notes as you can on the local wildlife while navigating the path.
You don't notice, but Yoongi is sneaking glances at you while you scribble feverishly.
"Are my ramblings really that interesting?" he prods playfully.
Your attention is jerked from the page. You glance at him over your shoulder, feeling a burn in your cheeks.
"I try to remember everything I learn," you say, and your voice betrays none of the slight embarrassment you feel at being observed in your "natural habitat." Because you've always been very intent, maybe even obsessed, with collecting knowledge. You suppose that's one of the things that makes you good at your job.
As if he can sense your thoughts, Yoongi says, "So, you're a journalist?"
You never told him exactly what your occupation was, only that the mayor sent you. You hesitate for a moment. For some reason, you have no desire to lie to him.
"Private investigator," you reply.
He hums in acknowledgement. He doesn't ask who you were hired by, but the subtext is clear enough. The mayor recommended him to you for a reason, after all.
The two of you arrive at the site. No longer is it wrapped in police tape, but the same eerie air of caution still lingers.
Aged thirty-five, he was found in the woods. More specifically, in a little clearing among the closely-knit trees, in the center of a ring of dead grass.
Apparently, Laplan was dissatisfied with the control of local wildlife, and took it upon himself to do a bit of "population control." He was found in hunting gear with a .35 Remington, without a single shot fired.
Yoongi says that very little information was in the papers, similar to Bradley. Just a warning to civilians regarding a recent animal attack.
"He wasn't attacked, he was mauled," you can't help but say as you examine the site. The mayor gave you snippets of the police reports, but you still have yet to get your hands on the coroner's report.
"By what?" Yoongi asks, a strange hesitation in his voice.
You look at him.
"Not sure" you reply, turning your attention to the surroundings at hand.
Laplan was found here, among this break in the trees. The ring of dead grass remains, and half of you expects to see a pool of blood in the center of it. But there is nothing but brittle vegetation.
"What kind of animal?" Yoongi asks as he circles around the perimeter.
"A mountain lion, presumably." But for some reason, a reason that you can't name, you doubt it.
A wave of uneasiness ripples through you.
"Let's fan out a bit, try to see if any of the trees around here have the same rot," you call out, eager for a distraction.
The two of you explore the area for a while, noting irregularities in the plant life. Evidently, thanks to Yoongi's commentary, you discover that the surrounding plants appear to be dehydrated, despite the abundant rain. Neither of you find any of the strange mushrooms in this part of the woods.
Yoongi checks his watch at noon on the dot.
"We should get moving. You said there's one more site you wanted to visit, right?"
He's right, the site of Sharon Mason, the final and most recently deceased. You remember now that Yoongi said he had to leave at two p.m., though he didn't mention why.
Lurking Lake, and the surrounding woods which apparently don't have a name, according to Yoongi. They are simply known as "the woods surrounding Lurking Lake."
And you must say, the name lives up to its potential. First of all, it's bigger than you thought it would be. It has a presence, the beating heart of the forest.
Under the gray sky, the water is dark green with a peculiar, abysmal deepness. The perimeter of the lake is outlined by wild grass and moss-robed stones, and the outer edges of the water have a film of algae.
Fog hangs over the landscape like a misty curtain, swirling along the ground.
"She was found by the lake, right?" Yoongi asks, examining some sort of cattail grass by the lakeshore.
"In the lake," you correct, bending over to look closer at the pebbled shore.
"Barely anything in the papers again," Yoongi says before you get the chance to ask. "Mainly because they don't know all that much."
"Hmm," you reply, staring at some sort of microscopic, squirming plankton in the shallow lake water.
Sharon Mason, aged seventeen. Found floating in the lake. Homicide ruled out, apparently.
The third death in under three months, and it certainly left a mark on the community, especially since she was only a teenager. You wonder if this was the catalyst that drove the mayor to hire a private investigator.
"Has the college noticed anything unusual about the lake? In the ecosystem, I mean," you ask.
"Not that I know of," Yoongi immediately responds. A little too quickly.
You straighten up and watch as he paces around the edge of the water, hands in his pockets.
"Nothing?" you ask again, a little more pointed this time. Because you hardly believe that nothing has surfaced at the university. Why else would the mayor include investigative services in "ecological disturbances" in her job description?
"No, ma'am," Yoongi replies, and the politeness in his voice is incriminating.
You'll have to look into it.
"Well, I won't know the finer details until I get the coroner's report," you say.
Yoongi looks up at you.
"The coroner?" he asks, curiosity and something else in his tone.
"Yes, I'll need to speak to him eventually. Do you happen to know where his office is? I've been having trouble getting him on the phone," you say.
You're watching closely for his reply, and you see his eyes flicker to something in the distance.
Following his gaze, you see it. The massive house on the hill, dark and towering over the valley. Through the mist, it looks like an abandoned Victorian mansion.
"The Addams House," Yoongi says from behind you.
"Addams? Is that who lives there?" you ask with your eyes still fixed on the house, like a beacon that you can't look away from.
"Used to, they're long gone now," Yoongi replies. "The new owner rents it out now,"
"And who would that be?" you press.
Yoongi just shrugs.
"The only people who know for sure are the tenants themselves. Apparently, he's a bit of a recluse."
Hmm, interesting.
"And...that's where the coroner's office is?" you ask, a little incredulous.
He nods a little hesitantly.
"Mm hmm, it's in the basement."
"Ah, of course it is," you can't help but reply, and it makes Yoongi smile a bit.
There's a pause as the two of you poke around.
"So, what exactly are you looking for?" Yoongi asks.
That makes you stop and think for a moment, because you're not entirely sure what it is you're looking for here. At Bradley's place, it was the mushrooms. Laplan's place of death, any indication of unusual wildlife or animal activity. Here at the lake, you don't even have a cause of death.
"I'm not entirely sure," you admit, again not finding it in you to lie to him. "I'll have a much better idea when I get the coroner's report."
Something you said seems to remind him, prompting him to check his watch.
"I have to go now," he says, quickly gathering his things.
"Alright, I'll give you a ride back," you offer. Not that you would ever admit it, but you're not quite ready to part from him yet.
"No, no, that's alright," he blurts out, already making his way towards the outline of trees. "It's a short walk," he insists.
"From here?" you question, but by the time you turn around, all you can see is his dark hair and slight frame darting expertly between the trees.
Your shoulders deflate as you let the rest of your sentence die with a puff of breath. A strange man, no doubt. But then again, that's how you like them.
Later that day, you venture to the coffee shop to do some more research, but the establishment is closed. The man mentioned something about only being closed on Wednesday afternoons.
The bookstore on the other side of the alley is closed too, none of the warm light from last time leaking from the front window.
You use your entire living room floor as your cork board and red thread, scattering open books and papers like a difficult-to-navigate parchment sea.
And you sail that sea until three a.m.
Five missing. The first is Alissa Ward, aged thirty-two, last seen at a grocery store at 5:32 p.m. She returned home at 5:47, according to her home security system, and then randomly left through the back door at 2:42 a.m. She lived alone, and it took a while for authorities to report her missing.
Then, Brynn Synder, aged twenty-nine, last seen at her boyfriend's place the night before her disappearance. Apparently, she had a habit of running through the woods in the early morning, and she was reported missing when she failed to show up at brunch with friends the next morning.
The police searched the woods. They found nothing.
You fall asleep on the couch as you're nearing the end of her file, dreaming of feet pounding on dirt.

september 23, 2004.
The coroner proves to be even more elusive than you thought. He appears to be averse to his faxing machine, and downright allergic to his telephone.
By midmorning, you're trudging up through the damp earth to the house on the hill. The closer you get, the more massive it appears. Ancient brickwork, towers and iron spires, neatly clipped hedges flush to the sides of house, and crowned by spindly trees overhead.
There's a tall iron gate encompassing the entire property, spiraling with twisting designs. You try it, but it appears to be sealed even though you don't see a lock of any kind.
You still rattle it a few times for good measure, causing the metal to creak and screech as if it were alive, and very displeased at the rough treatment.
A moment later, a figure emerges from the fog. A man, it looks like, wearing a large coat. As he approaches, you notice the floppy black hair hanging in front of his face.
"Hello, I'm sorry to bother you," you call out when he's close enough to hear you. Really, you're not sorry, since you've been trying to get a hold of the coroner for several days now, with not so much as a return message.
The man is young, with a strong jaw and handsome features. But his skin, it's somehow completely colorless. You can't quite explain it, but it looks like ice, translucent yet cloudy at the same time. And what's weirder is the way your eyes can't quite stay focused on it. It makes your head throb if you stare at the same place for too long.
"I need to speak to the coroner," you say, putting authority in your voice. If you want to get anywhere with this case, you'll need the causes of death.
"He...He isn't here right now," the man says, sounding a little nervous. Now that you're closer, you can see his bunny-like front teeth biting at his strangely colorless lips.
"When will he be back?" you reply.
The man's head is downturned, eyes flickering over the ground.
"I'm not sure. He's spread quite thin, you see," he says.
You raise an eyebrow, unsatisfied.
"W-Well there aren't many forensic pathologists in this area, so he has to service the next three towns. And he always takes Wednesdays off for personal reasons, so he hasn't been in yet and-"
"Alright, kid," you interrupt his rambling, since he only appears to be getting more nervous by the second.
"Just have him call me as soon as possible, okay?" You hand him a card with your information scratched onto it, and he reaches through the gate's bars to take it between his extremely cold fingers.
"Yes ma'am," he says obediently, scurrying back up the hill and disappearing behind a hedge wall.
Strange young man, you think. But, as you're starting to realize, that is the norm in this town.

"She saw through my glamour," Jungkook announces to the room. And everyone freezes, stealing little glances at each other.
"I told you, she's perceptive," Yoongi says from his place on the chaise lounge.
"Curious too, she came into the bookshop looking for something on strange fungi," Namjoon supplies.
"And spent the entire night in the cafe reading," Jin adds.
"She won't stop calling my office. I'm not sure what I'm going to tell her," Taehyung admits.
"She's just doing her job," Jimin counters.
"In any case," a stern voice interrupts, the only voice that hasn’t spoken so far.
“Keep an eye on her.”
