An unfortunate sight, but with a happy ending! This entangled Minke whale was found Thursday right outside Frenchman Bay. The whale was discovered by @barharborwhales Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company, who spotted fishing line in its mouth and probably wrapped around its tail fluke. In the second photo, the line is just visible underwater. The whale watch crew quickly responded by contacting our local distentanglement team from the Marine Department of Marine Resources. BHWW captains were able to stay with the whale until the team arrived. We have been notified that the team was able to successfully free the whale from the lines, and it was able to swim safely away! Entanglement is an all too frequent occurrence in the #gulfofmaine for marine mammals, and research and distentanglement efforts are needed to save these whales. Unfortunately, entanglement is one of the leading causes of human-related mortality for large whales. Thanks to everyone involved in saving this Minke whale! This is a beautiful shot of a mom-calf pair of Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins, seen from the @barharborwhales #whalewatch this summer. March is #dolphin awareness month! Dolphins are toothed whales, known as odontocetes, and are highly social.
