The Viking’s Belly

Erik was a viking warrior famous for his exploits across the Danelands. His reputation was fearsome; his body full and strong; his blonde hair long and beautifully combed, his eyes pools of icewater and his chest as full and fearsome as a mountainside. His reputation was all the more impressive for one so young, only just a man and yet already renowned across the fjords.

His nickname in the raids was Eirk Barebelly because that was how he liked to fight: with only a pair of leather straps crossed across his mighty, thick chest (pectorals bouncing as he ran, nipples hard as diamonds in the cold) to hold his shield, and a cloth of fur around his middle, held in place by a bronze belt. His thick thighs were encased in leggings, his calved and feet protected by strong boots. But his belly, with its deep indent of a belly-button, trail of gold-blonde hair running up the lower curve and full expanse of well-fed flesh, was left bare – a challenge to his opponents and a declaration of the strength of his gut.

But there was another reason Erik kept his stomach exposed while raiding: it was to prevent the ruining of good armour in the aftermath. For raiding builds up a healthy appetite among all viking warriors – and Erik's appetites were greater than most. When his blood was up and the rest of his vikings were feasting and drinking and fucking, Erik would go on the hunt for a better sport. Erik's belly was blessed by Andrihimmir, god of feasting and slaughter, and required filling with only the finest meat.

Erik discovered this gift bestowed upon his belly when he was on the cusp of manhood and he and an old rival were sent out into the woods – to see who would become foremost warrior of their clan by surviving on their wits, without weapons or food. His rival, a redheaded boy called Harald was thick of chest and arm – but cruel and cowardly. He clung to Erik like a shadow as they navigated the winter wood, moaning and bellyaching about the lack of food – how they should wait till everyone was abed and raid their longhall instead. They would feast like kings, Harald said, patting his firm belly. It was at this point Erik's belly gave out a wolfish groan. A yawning hunger overcame his stomach – and it occurred to him that there were no rules on what he could hunt.

He overpowered Harald easily, shucking off his furs with one hand, exposing his strong heaving torso and naked loins, before devouring him in a few easy gulps. His belly swelled out immediately as he swallowed down Harald's kicking feet – ripping his tunic in two as the cloth expanded and tore as his great belly bulged and stretched the cloth to its limit. It spilled out of his now open tunic like a rolling boulder, and heaved in front of him, far heavier than a pregnant wife's – rounder of form and deeper of belly-button (like the one eye of Odin, deep and dark and a reminder of sacrifice).
