can you tell me something about rubens barrichello? i know that wikipedia exists but learning information from people on tumblr is more interesting
oh rubens barrichello, the greatest second driver in the history of the sport. he was michael schumacher's number two (and apparently michael literally had it written into his contract that rubens would have to give up wins to help him win the championship, and rubens did not know about that) and the two of them are (i think, don't quote me on this) the second most successful driver pairing in the history of f1 (after brocedes of course). rubens was apparently exceptional at setting up a car, jenson button once said that he was the best at setting up a car that he had ever seen (and i think jenson also once said that rubens was his favourite ever teammate).
in 2002, rubens was absolutely dominating at the austrian grand prix. michael was well ahead in the championship and ferrari were dominating the season. towards the end of the race rubens was ordered to let michael past so he could win the race, which rubens did (unhappily, obviously). it caused a massive scandal, i think michael refused to take the top step or pulled rubens up there with him, and afterwards the team was fined something like a million dollars for breach of proceedings (not for the team orders but because of the podium stuff with michael and rubens. Later that year, at the US? grand prix, michael was leading but slowed down supposedly to try and finish in a dead heat with rubens, but rubens was awarded the win because he finished slightly ahead (it is thought that michael did this to pay rubens back for the win that was taken from him). because of the ferrari team order situation, the fia actually banned team orders from the 2003 season (although this move was reversed years later, also because of ferrari and the fernando is faster than you order given to felipe massa).
after being replaced at ferrari by felipe massa, rubens went on to drive for bar honda, and was teammates with jenson button. in 2009, after honda pulled out of f1 following the 2008 financial crash, both of them were retained by brawn. many people were critical of brawn retaining rubens, with some saying he should have been replaced by bruno senna (nephew of ayrton) but both jenson and rubens won multiple races that season, with jenson winning the wdc, and brawn winning the constructors. when jenson won the wdc in brazil he had to go back to the uk to do stuff for sponsors etc. as a sort of victory tour, but there were problems with his flights, so rubens lent him his private jet to take him back (i think rubens also has a pilot's license).
in addition to his achievements in f1, rubens also has the honour of being the very first person to beat the stig on british top gear, something that many f1 drivers had previously tried and failed (seriously i don't know if you have ever seen british top gear but it was one of the biggest shows in the world and when this happened it was a legitimately extraordinary moment).
i believe he now occasionally does commentary/media work for brazilian f1 broadcasters, and at least one of his sons has competed in the lower formulas. he is widely regarded as an incredibly nice man, and is deeply underrated as a driver

thoughts on the peak dirtbag jenson moment when he commentated the 2005 monaco gp hungover (he was at the cannes film festival the night before) (he woke up passed out on a yacht because he forgot he had to commentate) with a husky voice (he said he thought he sounded cool) after his team got banned for an illegal engine
You're right this was absolutely a PEAK Jenson moment. There are clips and gifs for those who haven't seen them. Context for everyone: In 2005, Jenson was racing for BAR (which would later become Honda and then Brawn and then Mercedes) and had an overall mid season, finishing 9th in the championship. The BAR car wasn't great, and during this time Jenson was looking for a way out of the contract to potentially get to Williams (this involved a court case where the judge ruled he had to stay at BAR for 2005). In any case, BAR got handed a three race ban and a fine for an illegal fuel tank. JB was still obligated to be at the racetrack during the day, but he could party all night given that he didn't have to race on Sunday.
During the Monaco GP weekend, Jenson went to Naomi Campbell's Cannes party as well as Dolce & Gabbana's party (pics below--gold jacket is naomi's party, blue is d&g). In his autobiography he writes that he slept on the sofa of someone's yacht for a few hours, took a cab back to Monaco, had a Bloody Mary for breakfast and headed straight to the commentary box.
And in case anyone was wondering, this is what he wore to Cannes:
#i dug out my copy of life to the limit just for you! an amazing ask!!!#jenson button#buttonmania#asks

Feeling like putting down my find so here is
JV/Ant Davidson Timeline
(Can’t guarantee 100% accuracy on all info, can’t guarantee no bias no projection, not using there full names because guess what, so less info about them together if you google their names together my blog appears on the 1st page)
JV was raised in Switzerland. Did math and computer science in Switzerland. He found out he needed an engineer background to enter F1 so went back to England to get a master in that. Got to work at BAR(later Honda, Brawn, Merc) eventually. (He had a billion interview on him hustling his way to BAR but that’s not relevant to the story here)
Ant was raised in a middle class family. Went to Karting with brother and he was more interested and started to compete in Karting. He worked his way to Formula Ford and was lucky to get a sponsorship( the sponsor bought a house and let him lived there). His sponsor talked to him about career choice, at that time, test driver made a decent amount of money and that f1 seat seems a bit too distant. So Ant ended up in BAR around the same time as JV
Well JV was not that much of an engineering guy. His job going into Honda was a combination of some data analysis, coordination between departments and some engineer. There was no proper strategist job back in the days so he just bounced around. (The untold interview he said he was suppose to fix an electronic problem on the front wing, Evan Short ended up doing that. Not saying that he knew nothing but inferring from his other interview, he definitely needed help). (Even now strategist have “low” status in the team since only the principal strategist can go to the track and everyone back home’s job is make sure to feed enough info through TR that the principal’s eyes are always on track).
Meanwhile, Ant was doing amazing as a test driver, too amazing that Honda was reluctant to release him to do actual f1 racing. He missed a seat(which team I forgot) but Honda eventually agreed to let him race for Super Aguri in 2007. That team didn’t last.
Then came the Brawn year. Before 2009, JV and Ant were already starting to worry about their jobs and registered a company together. Company never took off because here comes Brawn GP.
After the championship, our champ Jenson was scheduled to do victory laps in the factory for the fans but he already buggered off to McLaren. Ant did the laps and JV was his engineer for that.
Then came the Merc years.
Ant was doing a bunch of different things then: racing in WEC, driving the Merc simulator and later became a sky sport host. Ant missed the chance of winning a championship(he also missed a podium due to bad luck in 2007) but he got one eventually. When Alonso returned to F1, Ant interviewed him asking if Alonso remembered them racing against each other in WEC, Alonso did not remember. Ant also did Jenson’s retirement interview. Ant also did some interview later saying he was too nice to be competing in this shark tank of f1, nice guy can’t win races.
JV was doing a bunch of different things in Merc as well. He was in charge of simulator, junior team, esport team and development data analysis software for premier league(honorable mention: he wrote the drivers code of conduct in 2016 to prevent Lewis and Nico fighting). Ant was a reliable simulator driver, JV was working a lot with Ant at that time(JV didn’t need to be present for the crowd strike thing but he was there…) (Also they Merc’s equipment to tune cars for their friend’s Karting league, naughty boys). I want to believe JV cares about drivers he works with, especially junior team (he went up to hug Esteban Ocon(Merc junior driver) after his 2021 Hungarian gp win(Merc strategy was a disaster that race)
Ant said JV is one of his best friends. He phoned JV a lot during the Honda and Brawn years. Ant also texted JV to ask for technical details when he started to comment for Sky( Ant joked in 2023 pre season test that JV is getting to busy with his TP job to reply to his texts). JV also bugged Ant for a VIP pass during Ant’s LeMans years. JV had spent time with Ant’s family doing barbecue for JV’s birthday. JV is Ant’s kids’ god father.
Projection time: Brawn and Merc years treated JV so well he probably is a bit idealist about things now. The stuff he said at Williams make sense if your work experience is a streak of championships. JV will probably never get a reality check so hard the way Ant exit F1(divorce? Idw). Knowing they are good friends make me happy.

"A visit from Andrew Shovlin"
"The Leeds University Formula Student Team received a visit from Andrew Shovlin, an old engineering graduate who is now Chief Race Engineering for Mercedes F1 Team. Andrew was in Leeds to give a talk on his experiences in Formula 1 and the different areas of engineering which make up a F1 team. After the talk, Andrew had a look around the Formula Student workshop which is about to be the home of the F15 chassis, which is being built at the moment. He gave us some pointers on team management but unfortunately wouldn't let us borrow Lewis or Nico to drive!"
"A brief overview of Andrew's career:
Andrew graduated from the University of Leeds in 1998, after completing a BEng in Mechanical Engineering, he went on to complete a PhD in Vehicle Dynamics and Control and has had a very impressive F1 career since. After completing his PhD he joined the Research and Development department at BAR Honda in 1998, in a role focused on vehicle modelling and simulation. In December 2000, he was promoted to Assistant Race Engineer for Olivier Panis, with whom he worked for two years. When Jenson Button arrived at BAR Honda in 2003, Dr Shovlin worked alongside Craig Wilson on Button’s car, also in the capacity of Assistant Race Engineer. In 2004, he moved up to Senior Race Engineer, taking on full responsibility for engineering Button’s car. This marked the start of a well-publicised and highly successful partnership with the Formula One driver that culminated in Button winning the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship (WDC)
After his success in the 2009 WDC and the subsequent takeover of what was by then Brawn GP by Mercedes, Jenson Button jumped ship to McLaren, while Andrew Shovlin remained behind. Mercedes’ involvement coincided with the return of seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher and Andrew Shovlin has been chief engineer at Mercedes ever since. He is responsible for organising the car’s set-up before the race, testing new parts and devising the race strategy; in between races, he spends weeks and weeks at test tracks running simulations to improve the car.
