"I've noticed that younger fans seem to have trouble connecting the dots that a lot of adults on this website were kids younger or close to the age of Yusuke when this series was originally airing back in the 90s in Japan and the 2000s in the west.
Although these fictional characters' stories ended for them at 18 it doesn't mean that Yusuke and the gang stop being important, interesting, or compelling to us. It also doesn't mean that we have to stop loving these fictional characters and their stories after we turn 19.
If you as a minor 14-17 or someone aged 18 - 25 thay feels comfortable shipping these characters, viewing art of them, and reading fic about them ESPECIALLY NSFW art/fic; but your skin crawls that people older than you are creating that content, then you need to sit down with yourself and ask yourself if fandoms that are literally older than your existence are places that you are ready to be socializing in.
Fandoms that are older than your existence will have fans that are MUCH older than you and they are making content and having interactive conversations.
Yu Yu Hakusho is not an Adult Only fandom but it is a fandom that is Mostly Adults.
I fell in love with this show when I was a pre teen. I'm in my mid 30s. The show's target audience is teenagers. But here is the thing: it's target audience was teenagers back in the 90s and 2000s and that's still most of its audience today because Togashi told a fun and resonant story that tends to stick with its audience.
If you can't handle shipping content or adult conversations (conversations about mature topics and themes not necessarily 18+/NSFW but these are definitely present also) about Yu Yu Hakusho then you should try to avoid adult spaces when searching for discussion or content and stick to spaces specifically for minors.
A space specifically for minors would have a ban against all 18+/NSFW content that is strictly enforced. It would not have an 18+/NSFW section at all.
Tumblr and most of the discord servers for YYH that I've seen are adult spaces. Because there is an expectation that while minors are allowed on the websites they must be over a certain age with parental permission because adult conversations happen here where minors could see them.
All of this to say: Unplug from the adult spaces if you feel uncomfortable with adult themes and content or 18+/NSFW content.
Talk to friends irl about Yu Yu Hakusho or find a minor focused space online to talk about it. Come back to the adult spaces in a few years.
This applies to the 18 - 25 crowd also. If you can't handle seeing someone ship these characters or if someone ships them in a way that you don't agree with and it's so upsetting to you that it's causing you a great deal of anger or distress then you need to consider if you really want to be in the Greater Online Yu Yu Hakusho Fandom at this particular point in your life. Or if maybe you want to filter tags on tumblr and drop sites that you can't filter to make your fandom experience more smooth.
If Yu Yu Hakusho has lasted 30 years then it'll last another 3 or 5 years while you get adjusted and engage with Yu Yu Hakusho in minor focused or safely filtered fandom spaces. Trust me. Yu Yu Hakusho will be somewhere on the greater internet when you're older and you've gotten better at self regulating your intake of content online and your response to seeing content online that you don't like.
Yusuke, Kazuma, Kurama, Hiei, Keiko, Botan, Shizuru, Yukina, Genkai and the rest will be here when you get back. That's the great thing about resonant media. It sticks around because people connect to it.
You can love them as long as you want to. They'll always be there. They're not going anywhere."
This mod would just like to add
Tumblr media
No one shipping Yusuke x Keiko is sexualizing or exploiting minors; yes, even if the person shipping is 35 years old. These are cartoons, fictional, 2d drawings. If you want to play cute with "but they're 14!" No. Yusuke was created in 1992. He is 31.
If any of the above makes you, a minor, uncomfortable, then get out of adult spaces. Back in myyy day (que groans), any show I liked and looked at online had adult content, like Inuyasha or Naruto, even Teen Titans. I'd be 12 and see suddenly complete porn of Raven, and as a teen, I'd just exit out of it. Now, kids see things online, things they shouldn't see because the internet is NOT safe for kids without parental oversight, and their response is to... yell at the people making the content... for other adults.
If you wouldn't walk into Spencers and yell at the employees there for the vibrators, don't yell at adults drawing porn of Yukina and Hiei fucking. Exit out, or ask your mommy and daddy to put restrictions on what sites you can access. The internet is NOT your babysitter.

“Onii-san…?”
“Keiko, glad you could come.” My older brother greeted me as his face was buried under files with strands of midnight, black hair curtaining his onyx eyes.
“I wanted to ask how’s school for you,” he continued with fatigue lacing his voice.
“Well, I’m here at home and the tutors are quite—attentive—to academic progress,” I responded.
“Of course, well you see...as you know I am starting my official position and I thought it would be better if you decide what you want to do now that you will be expected to go to secondary school.”
I was dumbstruck. What does he mean I decide what I want to do?
“Apologies Kei, its…,” his eyes were barely focused on the mountainous documents. Icould hear a sigh before Shinji shifted in his chair to finally look at my (e/c) eyes.
“Sorry Kei, let me rephrase a bit,” his lanky, calloused hands held on to my right hand that was folded on my lap, “I know we’ve—you—have been stuck here in the compound since the day you were born...due to our circumstances. I also know you have been secretly training after hours with the advice of Principal Yoshinobu since we discovered your ability.”
At that my eyes widened in fear. It was not the will of the other big families’ elders I were to train as a sorcerer since it is more “beneficial” and “safer” to be tucked away from the world and pass my cursed energy and techniques down the line “like any good wife.”
That was true. I was told growing up, my brother as the future head and me as a highly potential, powerful wife. Of course basic defense and manipulation of cursed energy was taught, but beyond towards becoming a shaman was banned. There were only two Hideos. One Hideo already trained and became a Grade 1 sorcerer already. Another must be safe in case of emergency. In need for an heir. Especially after The Accident.
Interrupting my thoughts of planning an excuse, Shinji continued, “But, I am not angry. Rather impressed you hid this from the elders for over 10 years and conducted your training on your own.”
“Onii-san, you...knew?”
Shinji’s eyes shined in affection as he softly smiled at me, “Yes, it was coincidence I woke up from a nightmare to hear your quiet breathing techniques in the hidden garden when you were in first grade.”
At that I had no words. Does this mean he’s okay with it…?
“Now that you know that I know,” he took a deep breath as he let go of your hand to walk to the back of his desk, “I proposed you should be free to train as a sorcerer at the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, of course they were not fond of the idea; but, I argued that it is waste for a rare potential to just wait to pass it down the family.”
I thought for a moment, in shock of possible liberation.
“Wait, Onii-san, does that mean–”
“Yes,” he answered for me, “I will longer be an active sorcerer and completely devote myself to the Hideo family.”
I knew it. Shinji was sacrificing his job for me. Shinji and I both knew we didn’t like the weight that was chained to us at birth, but it’s inevitable since its our fate.
But how can he, who became a Semi-Grade 1 Sorcerer at age 13, and give it all up to be stuck here and become a husband as soon as they find a suitable bride? How can he just give up his life like some puppet. Just to bare a child and—
“Keiko, look at me,” Shinji saw the stress in my eyes. He gently grabbed my face in his hands to face him, “I know. I know. Do not blame yourself. I have lived and experienced what it is like to not be trapped here and...you should, too. You, Keiko, had always been the one protecting me. Ever since we were children, you—you always made sure the elders knew you would be here as the proper Hideo while I went out and risked my life and-and trained how I always dreamed. All in the exchange of you all alone here, surrounded in a remote bamboo forest, constantly studying to be a proper wife and pressured to marry and bear children for your husband. Y-you have been so selfless for me and I barely took notice of your isolation. You lived with this opposition thinking it’s normal and its ‘your destiny that you cannot change’.”
I could see the tears welling up in his eyes. I could tell Shinji didn’t want to look away, because if he did, he would cry even more.
“I-I can’t imagine the pressure and loneliness you must’ve felt while I was away all these years. Just communicating through minimal letters. So young and—“
He finally choked a sob before he hugged me. I knew what he was referring to. It took me forever to realize it, too.
Shinji blamed himself for everything that has happened. But I always told him it’s not his fault. The lessons I had to learn here were...necessary… for me, Hideo Keiko. I know he’s thinking back to that time when he had a surprise visit, and I tried to cover it up and never tell him. Because if I did, he would immediately come back home and face the same fate as me. At least then, one of us could live happily. Even for a little bit.
I just buried my face in his shoulder as I hugged him back in mutual comfort. After a few moments of reassurance that all is in the past now, he asked me, “So, would you like to transfer to a real school?”

Food In Star Trek
I have an inordinate number of thoughts about this so I decided to collect them here. Maybe someone will be interested.
There are no replicators in TOS.
Replicators were invented sometime in the decades between TOS an TNG. Technically this is contradicted by the presence of replicators in Discovery, but it’s clearly a mistake on the part of the Discovery writers, and it can be hand-waved as the prototypes being tested on the ultra-advanced USS Discovery and subsequently lost along with other experimental technology like the spore drive.
Instead of replicators TOS has the somewhat less advanced food synthesizers. Food synthesizers are programmed using cards, as seen in “And The Children Shall Lead.” The food eaten on the Enterprise suggests the synthesized food is more limited in both quality and variety than replicated food. In “Charlie X,” Kirk has a conversation with a cook about “synthetic meatloaf,” suggesting that producing synthesized food in mass quantities may also require some level of time and attention (whereas something simple like a chicken sandwich and coffee in “The Trouble With Tribbles” can be easily and readily dispensed). Also, sometimes the food comes out in the form of little multi-colored cubes.
It’s unclear how often food synthesizers are used outside of starships. Non-synthesized food is demonstrated to be widely available on planets and space stations. Some colonies still rely on agriculture, according to the discussion of grain in “The Trouble With Tribbles.” Additionally, Kirk’s friend Tom Leighton claims to have made a scientific breakthrough that could end starvation in “The Conscience of the King,” suggesting this is a more complex matter than simply distributing synthesizers. This may be because synthesizers require a significant amount of energy.
The exact differences between synthesizers and replicators is open to speculation. I believe synthesizers may require some amount of “raw material” in some form, but matter, rather than energy. However, it is also possible synthesizers are essentially early replicators limited to a few pre-programmed options, stored on the cards.
Replicators require significant amounts of energy.
Replicators are a development of transporter technology. They function by converting energy into matter, using the form of matter specified by the user, e.g. “tea, earl grey, hot.” They need energy to operate as well as the energy that is converted into matter, which could be a substantial amount. Voyager establishes that the energy cost of unrestricted replicator use is very great, forcing the crew to institute rations and rely on Neelix’s food when their access to energy sources is limited. Replicators are not truly unlimited, in that they rely on a steady source of energy. A damaged ship or a ship stranded in the Delta Quadrant, or perhaps a colony with limited infrastructure, cannot rely on replicators alone. Starfleet also issues field rations. These rations are likely replicated, but are made prior to missions, rather than supplying an away team with a portable replicator. This could suggest that replicators must be at least a certain size, or that a sufficient portable energy source does not exist.
Non-replicated food
One of the most interesting aspects of food in Star Trek is that, even when unlimited replicator use is available, some people still choose to eat non-replicated food. However, some of this food is made with replicated ingredients. It appears that cooking is fairly popular, for clear social and recreational reasons. During a conversation in an episode of TNG, Keiko expresses surprise not that Miles O’Brien’s mother cooks, but that she uses “real meat.” I believe several episodes imply that by the 24th century, most meat in the Federation is replicated, though sometimes is replicated raw and cooked. I suspect plant-based ingredients are more likely to be non-replicated but I have no textual evidence of this.
Sisko mentions on a few occasions that his father, who owns and operates a restaurant, prefers to use fresh, non-replicated ingredients. Interestingly, not all restaurants do this: Quark’s serves almost exclusively replicated food (though the alcohol is more complicated). Various characters on Star Trek profess to taste a difference between replicated and non-replicated food, and I believe they do. Replicators are incredibly precise devices that match the molecular structure of items. A person could, theoretically, make a perfect recreation of a dish they had cooked by programming the exact patterns from that dish into the replicator. But cooking is unpredictable, with a slight but almost certain variation in molecular structure each time a dish is prepared, even if the exact same recipe is followed. Using non-replicated ingredients adds an additional level of unpredictability. Non-replicated food may not necessarily be “better” but there is a real chemical difference, in addition to the psychological and social differences inherent to the experience of eating non-replicated food.
Restaurants in the age of replicators
The existence of restaurants is absolutely fascinating. Sisko’s in New Orleans obviously provides food prepared by Joseph Sisko. But Quark’s serves replicated food. Starfleet officers living on Deep Space Nine are shown to have replicators in their quarters. Do civilians have them as well? If so, why are they paying Quark for food? Perhaps Quark has proprietary recipes--custom replicator patterns that cannot be easily recreated (anything can theoretically be recreated if the correct pattern is guessed). The Klingon restaurant on the Promenade may be the same way, as Federation replicators may not come with a wide variety of Klingon dishes pre-programmed, and Federation citizens may not know how to create the patterns.
Replicators are not idiot proof!
It’s still possible to get bad food out of a replicator. Ultimately replicators are computers, which means they require the correct commands in order to give the desired results. Tom Paris becomes frustrated in one of the first episodes of Voyager because, despite offering several varieties of tomato soup, the replicator produces soup he doesn’t like. Perhaps if he had been more specific he would have been more satisfied. There is an absolutely maddening variation in the level of specificity used in replicator commands. From “tea, earl grey, hot” to “coffee, double strong double sweet” to people requesting water at specific degrees celsius. One can safely assume that personal replicators can be programmed to recognize consistent shorthand for regular orders, but many of these various commands are given to replicators in public areas or by guests. Presumably replicators will default to a certain version of an item if details are not specified and are also shown to sometimes request additional clarification. There is certainly room for people to create their own unique recipes by making specific requests of a replicator without physically cooking, leading to either good or bad results.
Alcohol
Alcohol can be replicated, as shown in Up The Long Ladder. Presumably restrictions can be placed on this function. However, most of the drinks at 10 Forward are apparently synthehol, which does not induce intoxication (though Guninan does have real alcohol). Apparently synthehol is basically futuristic non-alcoholic beer and distinct from replicated alcohol. I believe the drinks at Quark’s are truly alcohol, though he could probably reduce synthehol if requested. It’s unclear if all forms of alcohol can be replicated, as Quark mentions stocking up on kanar for the Cardassians, and a ban on Romulan ale would be difficult if it could be replicated. (There would be some barriers to replication such as reverse-engineering the replicator pattern, and restrictions could be put in place to prevent replicators from dispensing it, but I imagine these could be fairly easily circumvented).
All in all, food in Star Trek is complicated and very interesting, at least to me.

Honor Bound
Tumblr media
Honor Bound is the second book in the Honors trilogy written by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre. It follows Zara, who after the events of the first book is now caught stranded in deep space with her Leviathan and her Honors partner. Things pick up immediately, and the dangers Zara faces this time around are much greater than she could have ever imagined. Since book 1 ended on a pretty intense note and some dramatic revelations, this review will definitely have SPOILERS for the first book, because it’s impossible for me to talk about the plot without spoiling what happened in book 1. With that in mind let’s talk about this book. I liked Honor Bound more than I liked Honor Among Thieves, and that’s mostly because it retained all the good parts from book 1, while doing away with some of the things I didn’t much care for. For one, this is a plot that is a lot more action packed; now that we know the Leviathan are at war with the Phage, and so far as we know Nadim and Typhon are the only two Leviathan left in light years, the stakes are much higher and the danger a lot more immediate. We still have the quiet, character building scenes from the first book between Nadim and Zara, but the cast has expanded and they get to do a lot more than just drill weapons into space ships. We also have a new setting; the Silver reminded me of Mos Eisley mixed with Knowhere, mixed with New Samara; it’s a space station full of grifters, pirates, illegal fighting rings and gambling dens, ruled by a Godlike criminal mastermind. The fact that it’s also full of aliens of all kinds made it especially like Knowhere and Mos Eisley; we meet all these new species and kinds of aliens, and we have the characters interacting with a world that so far removed from anything they have known on Earth or even their tour that it was really entertaining to read. Because of this new location and the expanded cast, the humor has also increased; my favorite parts of the book were watching Chao-Xing and Zara interacting as partners in the fighting ring. I really liked what the authors did with the characters, especially C-X; in the first book she was an antagonistic, one note douche, and here she’s a much more nuanced, pretty cool foil to Zara. Since we follow the characters gearing up for war, we spent a good portion of the book with the various characters working on the Silver, to get access to weapons and upgrades for the Leviathans. We also bring back an actual honest to God heist plot, and I was pleased with how well executed it was. The authors excel at character interactions which made even the parts that felt familiar interesting. That’s probably the biggest problem with this series; though I think the characters are well developed and interesting, the Phage as an enemy are genuinely creepy and threatening, and I really like the direction the series is taking with its examinations of relationships between races and aliens, a lot of it just feels well tread. There’s a bit of Star Wars, a bit of the Keiko/Expanse Series, a bit of Guardians of the Galaxy. The heist itself was so much like Temple of Doom/Raiders of the Lost arc, that I wondered for a moment if I had skipped back to reading the Unearthed series. Most to every single action set piece is lifted from somewhere else, or so similar in tone and execution that it might as well be. The other thing that annoyed me about this book, was again, the plot with New Detroit and Zara’s ex. Look, I know I complained in book 1, how I didn’t think the start of the book belonged in this series, how the Honors program itself, and all the build up we spent in New Detroit has no impact on anything that happens afterward. But I didn’t mean bring back Case and the mafia damn it! The interludes we get were simply ridiculous next to this plot about a swarm of near indestructible, mindless aliens that eat Leviathans from the inside out and pilot their carcasses. There is even a point in the book where the guy after Zara is told that his daughter getting robbed is not important enough to have him interject his own man in a program designed by ALIENS to advance humanity so he could have him kill her. That’s the other thing I didn’t get; is that the plan? Is Case supposed to kill Zara? Why? How is that going to help mafia man get his encrypted drug back? Or what, is Case going to kidnap Zara and bring her back to Earth and avoid a political scandal? There are so many more interesting things in the book, and so many more are set up for the next one, like the Godlike being that the Phage was created to exterminate, and humanity’s relationship to the universe, and the Leviathan relationship to humanity, and it has to share time with drug lords from Earth. The most original stuff in these books really are the characters and their relationships. Zara and Nadim were beautiful in this book; I loved the progression of their relationship, how bonded they are and yet how they are still young and fight and have problems with trust and anger. The bit where Nadim gets furious at Zara for shutting him out in her possible moment of death was heartbreaking; I really appreciated Zara was called out on not having the right to make those decisions for him. I also enjoyed the progression in the relationship between Zara and Beatriz. I find it a bit odd that Zara is having more trouble coming to terms with her feelings for a human girl than she did for a literal alien whale spaceship, but nobody's perfect. I also enjoyed how far Beatriz has come as a character; she has grown and changed so much from the scared girl she was the first time she came on board Nadim, who was afraid of space. The one thing I do have to point out with Zara though, was the writing. In book 1, she is described as black, and there’s a lot of focus on her hair and how she takes care of her hair and her curls. Here, I got the sense that the authors were actively trying to make her sound black; there were many points where she uses ‘damn’ and ‘fine’, in a way she had never done in the first book, and it just felt so cringey and awkward. You have to write your characters consistently; why would Zara start using slang now, on a spaceship in space, when she hadn’t, while she still lived in New Detroit? Authors who are not black should just be banned from writing AAVE, or at the very least they should have an actual black person read and correct their dialogue, so it doesn’t sound… well like your mom is trying to be hip with the kids. Outside of those issues, I really did enjoy this book. I am interested and more than a little hype to see how this series will end; I didn’t expect to get as invested as I did, or to like it as much as I did. If you haven’t checked this series out, I really recommend it; it’s a fun ride, with some unique character relationships and some rather interesting existential questions.

Tips for Debating Orca Captivity
1. Stop saying shut down SeaWorld. This seems horrible for me to say, but it makes us seem unreasonable. They are a huge rescue group and we need to acknowledge that, while advocating for the relocating of orcas and dolphins to sea sanctuaries. They can keep doing their thing without them.
2. Recognize the other cetaceans in captivity. Blackfish has everyone riled up about orcas, which I love with all my heart, but nobody seems to think about all the dolphins, belugas, and porpoises in captivity. SeaWorld only said they'd stop breeding orcas because we're only talking about orcas (that and that a law was about to be made in CA banning their breeding)! Orcas are literally big dolphins, others suffer no less in captivity.
3. Stop only going after SeaWorld! This post is kind of focused on them but there are so many other marine parks that get no attention that have the same problems. Examples are the Miami Seaquarium, where the oldest captive orca is kept alone in basically a fish bowl, Marineland, and Six Flags has dolphins. More beneath the cut, LONG post.
4) Stop saying orcas live as long as humans. They don't. Females live 50 years, males live 30 years. Examples like Granny are rare, that's like saying humans live to 122 years (oldest person). When you give false info it discredits your argument. The actual captive age of death averages at 13 years at SeaWorld (not even including stillborns and ones that died under a year old), so age is still a valid argument.
5) Stop relying only on Blackfish. It's inspired so many people, but procaps think it's exaggerated propaganda, and it'll make you seem a lot more credible if you bring up some other sources. Instead of saying "x says this", do the research yourself. I found a list of all SeaWorld's past orcas are did the math myself to come to the average lifespan of 13 years, again, it makes you seem more credible. Research any anti-captivity "facts" you see. For example, SeaWorld doesn't deprive their orcas of food if they don't preform, and they don't capture cetaceans from the wild anymore. Again, it makes you seem uneducated and like you've been fed "propaganda" there are plenty of true awful things about orca captivity.
6. Take in opposing info if you've got the time. It's good for preparing rebuttals.
7. Advocate for wild cetaceans in danger. The Southern Resident Killer Whale pods are dying due to human activity, as well as several others. Taiji is still having massive dolphin slaughters every year.
8. Don't be rude. It's tempting to just say "ANIMAL ABUSER! FUCK OFF!" when dealing with these people but it won't change their minds. Have a conversation.
So, here are some good talking points. Keiko is a great example of how well sea pens can work out. His release deserves it's own post (technically a failure, but he wasn't a good candidate for release, lived a full life and died of natural causes under human care basically), but he lived in one for 4 years beforehand, and it did wonders for his health. The navy keeps dozens of dolphins in a facility made of sea pens just miles from SeaWorld San Diego. They're not a theoretical, we're already using them. Seaworld does separate mothers and offspring. Katina has had 5 of 7 taken from her. Every one of Kalina's was taken from her. Two of Takara's were taken. List these by name. Not every one was taken as a calf, but mother and offspring should never be separated. Their bonds last for life. SeaWorld does give their orcas drugs. Court documents prove that they give them benzodiazepines (anti-stress). Ex-trainers have reported constant antibiotics, which contributes to antibiotic resistance, which was probably a factor in the deaths of many orcas. There are also examples of antacids and antipsychotics. Their teeth wear down to the gums from chewing on metal and concrete, officials at Marineland in the documentary "Inside the Tanks" even say that they do it out of boredom. Procaps may say that this happens in the wild, which is true, but not down to the gums, and that is because of suction feeding and preying on rough skinned animals, which does not happen in tanks. The "they swim up to 100 miles a day" is accurate to my knowledge. SeaWorld has said that their orcas log in the water because "all animals rest" but dolphins  (including orcas) don't ever fully sleep, they rest one part of their brain at a time. They are always moving in the wild. They log due to a lack of stimulation, same reason they chew on metal and concrete. They also repeatedly regurgitate food and beach themselves on the tank slideouts. This boredom caused repetitive behavior has a name: stereotypic behavior, or "zoochosis", because of how common it is in caged animals. They're so prone to this because of how incredibly intelligent they are. SeaWorld has done scientific studies on orcas, but have only done 51 since 1977, and only 32 published peer-reviewed relevant to wild orcas, and several are debatably not helpful to them. Since 1977. Their lifespan is significantly shorter than wild orcas. Most animals live /longer/ in captivity. While their new "educational" shows are informative, there are no benefits to their orcas. It's just "and this is a pectoral fin" instead of "wave to the audience!" I watched a video of one and they conveniently left out how far they swim and their lifespans, both impressive, notable facts. There have also been a large number of aggressive incidents other than Tilikum's kills (there’s got to be a better way to phrase that...), while orcas are incredibly peaceful in the wild, another sign of stress. There’s a significant amount of orca on orca aggression due to the forced “pods”, even deaths. Take a look at Morgan, in Loro Parque. I'm hugely anti captivity so this is just some advice for you guys.

6.Skip Beat – Yoshiki Nakamura
