Ballindalloch Castle

Ballindalloch Castle is located on the banks of the Avon River in Banffshire, Scotland. Built in the mid 16thcentury by the Macpherson-Grant family, the original castle was a turreted fortress designed in a Z plan with three stories and circular towers. The castle was added to throughout its history. Royalists breached the castle in 1645, but within a year, the Royalists were defeated, and the fire-damaged castle was repaired. In 1718, a two-story wing was added, and in 1770, another wing was added to the north to accommodate a French chef. In 1829, storms and floods did considerable damage, but by the 19thcentury, the fortress was transformed into a Victorian mansion. Further bathrooms were added in the 1960s, and a wing in the NE was taken down due to dry rot. The interior was redesigned in the 1980s. Ballindalloch Castle & Gardens remains in the ownership of the Macpherson-Grants. The castle boasts a grand Dining Room that once served as the Great Hall, a Drawing Room, a Smoking Room, a paneled Library, a tower Nursury, and more. The interior has wide staircases, oak balustrades, original artworks, military memorabilia, period furniture, a collection of literature, and a spiral staircase leading to the top of the original tower. Beneath the original 16thcentury castle is the dungeon, where wine is now kept. The estate has an 18thcentury dovecote, a Rockery for climbing, a Courtyard Garden, a laburnum arch, a tree-lined avenue, a Walled Garden, and the Ballindalloch Single Malt Distillery, which offers tours and tastings. The Castle offers tours, riverside walks, a children’s playground, a picnic area, and a tea and gift shop. Ballindalloch Castle & Gardens are temporarily closed to the public.

I was at the headwaters of the Spey system early this morning and the spate is settling back so looks like Tuesday might be a good day.
