Guitar update: listening
Today, my daughter's school board had a virtual presentation of a whole variety of African instruments by a Black musician.
We learned about how the instruments were made and listened to some incredible music. He's been playing these instruments for so long that he doesn't know what age he started learning them. His father made the kora that he played many songs for us on (my favourite was the love song).
I also really liked the sound of the balaphon (the precursor to the xylophone).
I was hoping I would also get some idea of how to write Kennedy's theme, but I kinda forgot about that.

GEEZER interview by stayupforever.com
Tumblr media
Next up in our SUF collective artist interviews is the one and only GEEZER, a true pioneer and legend in the Acid Techno scene (and beyond) . With new vinyl releases coming out of his ears (including the new and magnificent SOUL BUTTER on Planet Techno Special) now in at http://www.stayupforeverrecords.com/2-vinyl we’ve also managed to round up a whole bunch of rare GEEZER records including loads of awesome RAWS and some Suf Specials, as well as CD copies of his LP which you can GET FREE if you order 2 or more RAW records, or any of the other Geezer records listed on the suf site. There are also 2 links to Geezer sets you can hear and some very interesting words from the man himself..so read on!!!!
When did you first start producing Acid Techno/ Techno and what was your first vinyl release?...... 1995 Is the year I started .. My first true Acid Techno solo record was Prozac (Smitten 007) which was released in ‘96 . My first collaboration release was Ad Astra with D.a.v.e the Drummer and that was Stay up forever 015 ..
What is your favourite vinyl release and why?...... I have a few as I’ve made a lot. My faves are the ones I’m most proud of Raw 009 is a definite candidate, it worked exactly how I wanted it to. There were a lot of housey/tec type tunes around at the time that used a vocal in the same way, I thought that it would work well with the raw groove that I had going on at the time so I combined both...and It went on to sell loads! Another more recent release is my Jah Scoop track - How Long Must The Wicked Reign (SUF special 004) - it came out in a similar way, again, exactly how I wanted it to ..
What is your favourite synth or bit of kit?...... My favourite synth is my Oberhiem SEM , its great, it has a very unique sound , and a lovely notch filter on it . It was originally built by Tom Oberhiem to run along side Bob’s Mini Moog to expand the oscillators from a 3 to 5 .. My other faves are the Mini Moog, the Sequential Circuits Pro One, and the ARP Odyssey ..
Why Acid Techno? What got you hooked on the music and the underground scene around it?........ When I first started Acid Techno wasn’t really Acid Techno and that’s what got me hooked..it was the sense that myself and my label/scene mates were creating something new, a new style of music that eventually went on to become the above genre. The same with the squat party rave thing as it was relatively new and born out of the festival scene..making, creating, and being part of something new...
Best Rave/Squat Party/Festival/Club/ Free party experience?....... Difficult question as there are so many...Castlemorton, The old GLC building opposite Parliament ...Loads of the teknivals .. Stonehenge etc ..And on a non squat free-festy level Boomtown wins hands down..and Megavonts in Brazil was brilliant ..
Is it important to you to see your music continue to be released on vinyl despite the fact it is now amost impossible to make money from vinyl on small runs, and more and more djs are using digital formats?...... I think it’s important to release not just my own but everyone’s music on all formats really, to get the music out to all. Personally i think Acid Techno sounds better on vinyl as it lends itself to it. I don’t think it sounds that great digitally. It’s warmer and more analog, whereas other styles of techno lend themselves more to digital..
Why the name ‘Geezer’, and what other names do you play and record under?......., Well, Geezer is an artist name I gave myself a long time before I started to make Acid Techno, it’s been my name for time, for all types of music .. Jah Scoop is a pseudonym I gave myself for a Reggae Techno sound I co-invented alongside Ben Balaphonic on the Highwire label .. I have purist Reggae releases under the Scoop name too. I also have numerous pseudonyms for all types of different musical stuff ..
Check out my latest releases on Planet Techno , Central Music , AnArchway Noise and Techno Route ..
Planet techno special 002 Soul Butter , Bongo’s and Burgers etc ..

The Nat Birchall Quartet - The Storyteller - A Musical Tribute to Yusef Lateef
With 20 years passing since his first foray into recorded jazz, Nat Birchall now ranks as one of the premier saxophonists of his generation. With several highly acclaimed albums in the locker, he now returns with his most ambitious project yet – a tribute to the legend that is Yusef Lateef. “When Jazzman Gerald first mentioned to me the idea of doing an album as a tribute to the jazz giant Dr Yusef A. Lateef, my first thought was "Where on earth do I start?" Lateef was such a colossus of music, and his scope so broad, that I couldn't hope to begin to cover his musical universe. He was a master of the tenor saxophone, a master of the flute, a master ballad player, a master blues player. Not to mention his skills as a composer and arranger and of course his exploration and use of musical methodology and instruments from all over the world.“ “I’ve always been a great admirer of Lateef, and the challenge was intriguing, so I decided to give it go. We interpreted some of his own compositions (Brother John, Morning & Ching Miau) as well as some compositions by others that he made his own by careful arrangement and interpretation (Love Theme from Spartacus, Ringo Oiwake). I also wrote some original songs that, while certainly not written in his style, might be said to fall into his very broad approach to music making.” “I also wanted to utilise as many different instruments as possible, something I hadn't explored too much until this album. So it was a nice opportunity to finally get around to playing some of the many small instruments I've collected over the years; the Turkish zurna, the mbira from Zimbabwe, the balaphon from Mali and the arghul from Egypt. We have also tried to use varied time signatures in the music, so we have songs in 3/4, 5/4 and 7/4 time, as well as the standard 4/4.” “Ultimately the best music tells a story to the listener and takes them to places they might not have imagined themselves. Yusef Lateef certainly did that, and as such was a master storyteller.” - Nat Birchall
