Excerpts from "Kashmir Caged" - the report by Jean Drèze (economist), Maimoona Abbas Mollah (CPI(M) & AIDWA), Kavita Krishnan (CPI(ML) Liberation & AIPWA), and Vimal Bhai (NAPM) who travelled extensively in Kashmir on a fact-finding mission from 9 to 13 August 2019:
"● In every lane of Srinagar city, every town, every village, that we visited, we received an extensive schooling from ordinary people, including school kids, on the history of the Kashmir dispute. They were angry and appalled at the manner in which the Indian media was whitewashing this history. Many said: “Article 370 was the contract between Kashmir’s leadership and India’s. Had that contract not been signed, Kashmir would never have acceded to India. With Article 370 gone, India no longer has any basis for its claim over Kashmir.” One man in the Jahangir Chowk area near Lal Chowk, described Article 370 as a ‘mangalsutra’ (sacred necklace worn by married women) symbolising a contract (analogous to the marital contract) between Kashmir and India.
● There is widespread anger against the Indian media. People are imprisoned in their homes, unable to communicate with each other, express themselves on social media, or make their voices heard in any way. In their homes, they watch Indian TV claim that Kashmir welcomes the Government decisions. They seethe with rage at the erasure of their voices. As one young man in Safakadal put it, “Kiski shaadi hai, aur kaun naach raha hai?! (It’s supposed to be our wedding, but it’s only others who are dancing!) If this move is supposed to be for our benefit and development, why not ask what we ourselves think about it?”
● "There are more soldiers here than people”, said a young baker at Watpura near Bandipora. His friend added, “We’re afraid, because the army camp nearby keeps imposing impossible rules. They insist we have to return within half an hour if we leave home. If my kid isn't well, and I have to take her to the hospital, it may take more than half an hour. If someone visits their daughter who lives in next village, they may take more than half hour to return. But if there’s any delay, they will harass us.” The CRPF paramilitary is everywhere, outside nearly every home in Kashmir. These are clearly not there to provide “security” to Kashmiris - on the contrary, their presence creates fear for the people.
● Some 10,000 people protested in Soura (Srinagar) on 9 August. The forces responded with pellet gun fire, injuring several. We attempted to go to Soura on 10 August, but were stopped by a CRPF barricade. We did see young protestors on the road that day as well, blockading the road.
● We met two victims of pellet gun injuries in SMHS hospital in Srinagar. The two young men (Waqar Ahmad and Wahid) had faces, arms and torso full of pellets. Their eyes were bloodshot and blinded. Waqar had a catheter in which the urine, red with blood from internal bleeding, could be seen. Their family members, weeping with grief and rage, told us that the two men had not been pelting stones. They had been peacefully protesting.
● On 6 August, a graphic designer for the Rising Kashmir newspaper, Samir Ahmad, (in his early 20s) had remonstrated with a CRPF man near his home in the Manderbag area of Srinagar, asking him to allow an old man to pass. Later the same day, when Samir opened the door to his house, CRPF fired at him with a pellet gun, unprovoked. He got 172 pellets in his arm and face near the eyes, but his eyesight is safe. It is clear that the pellet guns are deliberately aimed at the face and eyes, and unarmed, peaceful civilians standing at their own front doors can be targets.
● At least 600 political leaders and civil society activists are under arrest. There is no clear information on what laws are invoked to arrest them, or where they are being held.
● A very large number of political leaders are under house arrest - it is impossible to ascertain how many. We tried to meet CPIM MLA Mohd Yusuf Tarigami - but were refused entry into his home in Srinagar, where he is being under house arrest.
● In every village we visited, as well as in downtown Srinagar, there were very young schoolboys and teenagers who had been arbitrarily picked up by police or army/paramilitary and held in illegal detention. We met a 11-year-old boy in Pampore who had been held in a police station between 5 August and 11 August. He had been beaten up, and he said there were boys even younger than him in custody, from nearby villages.
● Hundreds of boys and teens are being picked up from their beds in midnight raids. The only purpose of these raids is to create fear. Women and girls told us of molestation by armed forces during these raids. Parents feared meeting us and telling us about the “arrests” (abductions) of their boys. They are afraid of Public Security Act cases being filed. The other fear is that the boys may be “disappeared” - i.e killed in custody and dumped in mass graves of which Kashmir has a grim history. As one neighbour of an arrested boy said, “There is no record of these arrests. It is illegal detention. So if the boy “disappears” - i.e is killed in custody - the police/army can just say they never had him in custody in the first place.”
● But the protests are not likely to stop. A young man at Sopore said: “Jitna zulm karenge, utna ham ubharenge” (The more you oppress us, the more we will rise up)."

#Tarkhan (#ਤਰਖਾਣ)
Tarkhan is a north Indian tribe which has been historically present in a Punjab and its nearby areas. Tarkhans are an ethnic minority and most of Tarkhans are followers of Sikhism and small number is a follower of Hinduism. Very small of number of ethnic Tarkhans are found in Pakistan, these Tarkhans are followers of Islam. Tarkhans are subdivided into various clans (ਗੋਤ).
Tarkhan #Occupations:
Tarkhan occupations are carpentry, blacksmithing, masonry and farming. The Lohars (blacksmiths) of Punjab are Tarkhans who work with metals and term Tarkhan-Lohar is also used. This diversity in Tarkhan occupations is very clear from Sikh history, where different Tarkhan-Sikhs had different occupations. For example: Baba Lalo Ghattaura, one of the first Sikhs of Guru Nanak was a carpenter, family of Baba BHAI Roop Chand has always been farmers, Baba Hardas Singh Bhamra made the famous nagni used to kill the drunken elephant, he was also scholar, and close associate of 10th Sikh Guru, and Mistry Des Raj Kalsi of Sur Singh played an important role in re-construction of Akal Takht after it was destroyed by Ahmed Shah Abdali. In modern day Punjab, every house, every building is made by Tarkhans, all machinery such as combines, ploughs and harvesters are made by Tarkhans including manufacturing of tractors, also welding and repairing despite being a small minority. Tarkhans are the only people in Indian sub-continent to be masters of more than occupations.
#Ancient #History of Tarkhans:
Kasgarli Mahmut was 11th century scholar from Kashgar. He explained the word Tarkhan in the following way: "It is a name given before the Islamic religion. It means prince (Bey, Umar) in Arghu language." It is clear the word Tarkhan was not pure Turkish and that it was adopted into Turkish from the old language of Sogdiana. This was proved in the Turkish dictionary Divan u Lugat it-Turk written by Kasgarli Mahmut. Sogd was a name of a nation who settled in Balasagun. These were of the Sogd race. Sogd lay between Bukhara and Samarqand. Sogdia (/ˈsɒɡdiə/) or Sogdiana was an ancient Iranian civilization.
Historian H. Beveridge in his paper titled Tarkhan and Tarquinius points out that antiquity of Tarkhan is evidenced by the fact it's etymology is lost. He also states that Tarkhan was both a personal title and the name of a tribe. Bipin Shah in his paper titled Patali of Alexander, Sack of Nagar Thatta and Arghoon rule of Sindh talks about pre-historic central asian tribe named Tarkhan. Beveridge, Isaac Taylor, C. R. Condor and J. G. R. Farlong in their writings all agree that Tarkhan, Tarkan and Tarquin are same. Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, or Tarquin the Elder, was the legendary fifth king of Rome from 616 to 579 BC. Tarkhan was used among the Hittites (1700BCE- 1200BCE) to refer the tribal Chiefs. Also, the the Kassites (1531BCE-1155 BCE) had god called Tartakhan.
Khodadad Rezakhani of Freie Universität (Berlin) in the paper titled Continuity and Change in Late Antique Irān: An Economic View of the Sasanians writes (year is 560 AD): "These are the famous Nezak Tarkhans who claimed descent from the Alkhon king Khingila (Grenet 2002: 218). We know that these Tarkhans controlled the passes across the Hindukush both to Bamiyan and also to Kabul, via the Panjshir Valley (Baker and Allchin 1991). Based on the pattern of the earlier Hephthalites, they established and controlled formidable castles on both sides of the Surkhab River in southern Tokharistan, controlling the trade and military route from Bactria to Bamiyan (Grenet 2002: 218-20)."
In Eras of Humanity by Genealogy, Brian Starr writes about Kama Tarkhan of Huns. Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese traveller of 7th century AD also mentions various Tarkhans in Indian subcontinent such as Tarkhan of Samarkand, a meeting between king and 200 Tarkhans. Across the Hindukush of the First Millennium a collection of the papers by S. Kuwayama makes the mention of Chebishi Tarkhan who along with Tafu Tegin was sent to court of Tang Dynasty by King of Gandhara in 753 AD. Tarkhan Dynasty ruled over Gilgit in 7th and 8th century and was founded by a prince from Badakhshan. Further, founders of Maglot dynasty of Nagar and Ayash dynasty of Hunza were both Tarkhan princes. Tradition traces the origin of these Tarkhans to an imaginary Kayāni prince of Persia, by name Azur Jamshid, who is said to have fled here after the Arab conquest of Persia.
The town named Tarkhan in Egypt has been a site of various archeological diggings, some which were as old as 4000 BCE and oldest woven piece of cloth called Tarkhan Dress. In the town of Chal Tarkhan (Iran) many artifacts were found belonging to Sassanian Period (224 to 651 AD). Tarkhankut is name of peninsula in Ukraine and there are various places named Tarkhan in Russia. Tarkhans have been present in Indian subcontinent atleast since 6th century AD.
The ancient history of Tarkhans is also evidenced from the origin of various Tarkhan clans, such as Ubbi was a Germanic tribe and Bahra a Arabic tribe. There are places named after various Tarkhan clans in Iran (Panesar E-Takshan, Hunejan etc) and Tarkhan clans such as Siyan and Salh are also found among Kurds. Padam and Rattan being of native Indian origin. Menander 1 a Indo-Greek king was born in place named Kalasi (Alexandria of the Caucasusn) around 165 BCE. More than 90% Tarkhans have Tarkhan exclusive clans, only a very little overlap with others.

𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗻 #𝗣𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
According to 1881 census of British India there were 263,479 Tarkhan Sikhs. In the book The Crucial Decade by S.C. Sharma writes that Tarkhans too are found in all the three religious groups in this province, on 1921 their numerical strength in the (United) Punjab was 684,000. The small population of Tarkhans is also evidenced from the fact most of villages in Punjab used to have only three to four houses of Tarkhan families.

Tarkhan #Traditons
Tarkhans engage in ancestor worship in the form of Jathere (ਜਠੇਰੇ) and Matti (ਮੱਟੀ), different Tarkhan clans have different jathere However, this practice is now dying. Members within a same clan (ਗੋਤ) are related by blood. For marriages, Tarkhan practice class endogamy but clan exogamy i.e. they marry with Tarkhans only, however outside their maternal (ਨਾਨਕੇ) and paternal (ਦਾਦਕੇ) clans.
#Ramgarhia:
Some Tarkhan Sikhs identify with Ramgarhia as Ramgarhia Misl (Ramgarhia Confedration) was the one of most powerful Sikh Misl out of 12 misls. The founder and leader of Ramgarhia Misl was Maharaja Jassa Singh Bhamra, who was a Tarkhan himself and most of soldiers in Misl were from Tarkhan tribe. Strength of Misl is evidenced from fact that Ramgarhia Misl along with other sikh generals won Delhi and it was Jassa Singh Ramgarhia who dragged the Mughal throne from Delhi to Akal Takht, where it lies even today in Ramgarhia Bungas. In the Tawarikh Darbar Sahib by Udham Singh, it is written that Maharaja Jassa Singh of Ramgarhia Misl and his son Sardar Jodh Singh together contributed Rs 5 Lakh for construction of Ramgarhia Bungas.

"বাকের ভাই - reimagined " he is a rogue fictional character created by none other than the literary genius #HumayunAhmed portrayed in the popular television drama “কোথাও কেউ নেই“ . As the leader of this small #BikerGang, #BakerBhai lived on the edges of society, just outside the law and the mainstream society. The character is revealed to be a caring human being, with a clear sense of morality, truth and justice which made him a sensation overnight among the middle class in Bangladesh. By the end of the show, he is betrayed by his friend and found guilty of a murder he committed while defending an innocent, and finally hanged in #Dhaka Central Jail. And that was when, for a period of time, the veil between reality and fiction thinned out to oblivion. The episode before the series finale had set the perfect tone for the tragic ending. Baker Bhai was in jail, awaiting his hanging in silent suffering. His execution was to be shown in the last episode. Meanwhile, the morning of the last broadcast, the streets and homes of Dhaka city erupted into unanimous mourning. A veil of sadness had fallen over the city of Dhaka People were gathering in all parts of the city, reportedly grief-stricken and already mourning the unjust death of Baker Bhai. A mob of a few thousand had gathered outside Dhaka Central Jail itself, and was demanding that the police release Baker Bhai from custody, insisting that he does not deserve to die. In the face of such Franz Kafka-esque surrealism everyone seemed to have gone delusional. Letters and petitions urged Ahmed not to kill off Baker Bhai. He stretched his arm to hug Anika but, to shock or surprise, her side of the bed was empty. He woke with a jolt and checked the time. Shivaay: *to himself* Yeh ladki subah 6:30 bake kaise uth gayi!? His thoughts were interrupted by a pair of silky-smooth hands which wrapped around his bare torso. He immediately recognised them and held them. He turned back to see his lady love, dressed in royal purple silk robe. He tucked her hair strands behind her ear, which were blocking the view to his favourite sight: Anika Shivaay Singh Oberoi's angelic visage. Anika: Aap phirse mujhe taad kyoon rahe hain? Shivaay: Tum phirse itni khoobsurat kyoon lag rahi ho?... Actually, aaj kuch zyaada hi khoobsurat lag rahi ho. Anything special? Anika: Special toh hain. She sits beside him and hugs him. Anika: *whispers in his ear* Happy birthday Shivaay. Shivaay: *reciprocates the hug* Thank you jaan. He doesn't break the hug as he was expecting something from her but he soon broke the hug, unsatisfied. Anika: Arey! Achanak aapko kya ho gaya? Shivaay: Shaadi ke baad yeh mera pehla birthday hain. Dadi: Woh toh koi bhi laa sakte hain. Anika: Haan... likin agar us baker ne koi gadbad ki toh use jhaad bhi lagaani hogi na. Gauri: Bhauji, kahiye toh hum bhi aapke saath chalet hain. Jaroorat padi toh us chiraute ko ek jhaap main deewar se sata denge. Anika: *panics* Nahi nahi nahi nahi nahi nahi! All look towards her suspiciously. Anika: Mera matlab... tumhe chalne ki kya zaroorat hain? Ek cake hi toh laana hain, main le aaongi. Aur tumhe toh badi maa ki madad bhi karni hain. Gauri: Arey haan! Hum toh bhool hi gaye they. Anika: *in mind* Baal-baal bach gayi. ShivOmRu come out of the kitchen with French Toast for everyone then take their seats. Om: So, humne kya miss kiya? Jahnvi: Hum bas Shivaay ki birthday party ki planning kar rahe they. Shivaay: Thanks everyone but I would like agar sirf family wale ho. No outsiders and definitely not media. Shakti: Birthday boy ki baat sunli na. Sirf ghar wale. Anika: *in mind* Shivaay ne mera dil khush kar diya! Naach Anika! She did a subtle 'happy dance' to herself. After breakfast, everyone got busy in their work. Anika got ready and kept all her things in her "Chikni" bag. Shivaay comes there. Shivaay: Kaheen jaa rahi ho? Anika: *unknowingly* City Hospital. She bit her tongue after realising what she said while Shivaay panicked. Shivaay: Hospital? Kya hua? Kaheen chot lagi hain? Tabyat theek nahi hain? Main doctor ko ghar bula loon? Anika: Shivaay relax. *tries to cover up* Main... City Hospital ke... paas wali cake shop se aapka cake lene jaa rahi hoon. *hurries* Accha, mujhe der ho rahi hain. Bye. She quickly leaves from there, leaving Shivaay confused. Shivaay: *to himself* Aaj yeh itna weird behave kyoon kar rahi hain? Well, woh normal kab rehti hain? He shrugged his shoulders and went to his study. Evening. Shivaay's outfit  Shivaay's outfit Shivaay's outfit  Anika's outfit The family members chatted, giggled and played some games organised by Dadi. One of them included to do push-ups with your wife sitting on your back. After some time, it was time to cut the cake. Rudra: Bhaiya, pakka is cake main kuch toh hain. Bhabhi isse pick karne personally gayi thi. Anika: Aisa kuch nahi hain. *in her mind* Khaas cake nahi, kuch aur hain. Om: Achha, baatein baad main. Shivaay, cake kaato. Shivaay cuts the cake and all sing 'Happy Birthday' for him. He feeds it to Anika, OmRu, Dadi and everyone else. Rudra takes some cream and puts it on Shivaay's face. Shivaay's mouth into 'O' shape. Shivaay: What is this!? Rudra: Happy birthday bhaiya. Shivaay: *takes some cream and runs behind Rudra* Ruk tu! After running around the whole house, Shivaay cleans up and joins them again. Shivaay: Wow! That was fun... but wait a second, *calls out* Anika. Anika: Haan. Shivaay: Mera birthday khattam hone wala hain. Kya tum mujhe bataogi ki mera gift kya hain? Anika: *goes closer to him* Aapko isse achha gift aaj tak nahi mila hoga. Shivaay forwards his hand. Anika: Uh uh uh. Aap usse abhi nahi pakad sakte. Shivaay: *sarcastically* Toh kya next birthday pe pakdoon? Anika: Nahi. Agle birthday se ... *calculates on her fingers* ... 3 mahine pehle. Shivaay: Aise kya cheez hain jisse aane itna time lagega? Woh aa kahaan se raha hain? Anika: *sways side-to-side* Woh toh mere paas hi hain. She keeps her hands on his chest and bites her lower lip. Shivaay: Anika? She keeps his hand on her stomach and lowers her voice so only he can hear her. Anika: *whispers* Main maa banne wali hoon. Shivaay eyes widened with what she just said. He looked at her and she nodded in assurance with happy tears. Shivaay had big, ear-to-ear smile. He lifted Anika and swayed her in circles. Shivaay: Anika! Anika: Shivaay! Kya kar rahe hain? Mujhe neeche utaariye. He kept her down and cupped her face. Shivaay: *stammers with happiness* Sach? Tum...maa...matlab...main...papa...matlab...humara...baby... Anika nodded with each of his words. Rest of the family was confused. Dadi: Billu, kya hua tum dono ko? Shivaay: *happily* Dadi, congratulations! Aapka promotion hone wala hain. Dadi: Hein? Shivaay: Aap par dadi banne wale ho! All: Kya!? Shivaay: Haan! OmRu ran Shivaay and engulfed him in bone crushing hug. OmRu: Congratulations Shivaay/ Bhaiya! Gauri and Bhavya ran to Anika carefully hugged her. TejVi and Shakti came to them and blessed them. Dadi came to Anika and removed the bad eye (nazar) from her. Dadi: Anika puttar, tune aaj is parivaar bahot badi khushi di hain. Rudra: Haan Bhabhi. Finally, ab main sabse chhota member nahi rahoonga. Shakti: Arey bhai, kam-se-kam hone wale mummy-papa ko saath main toh khade hone do. + OmRu And RiYa pushed ShivIka towards each other. They looked at each other and blushed. Shivaay: *holds her hand* Thank you Anika, meri family complete karne ke liye. Anika: Thank you Shivaay. Mujhe ek family dene ke liye. Tarkhan (ਤਰਖਾਣ)
Tarkhan is a north Indian tribe which has been historically present in a Punjab and its nearby areas. Tarkhans are an ethnic minority and most of Tarkhans are followers of Sikhism and small number is a follower of Hinduism. Very small of number of ethnic Tarkhans are found in Pakistan, these Tarkhans are followers of Islam. Tarkhans are subdivided into various clans (ਗੋਤ).
Tarkhan Occupations
Tarkhan occupations are carpentry, blacksmithing, masonry and farming. The Lohars (blacksmiths) of Punjab are Tarkhans who work with metals and term Tarkhan-Lohar is also used. This diversity in Tarkhan occupations is very clear from Sikh history, where different Tarkhan-Sikhs had different occupations. For example: Baba Lalo Ghattaura, one of the first Sikhs of Guru Nanak was a carpenter, family of Baba BHAI Roop Chand has always been farmers, Baba Hardas Singh Bhamra made the famous nagni used to kill the drunken elephant, he was also scholar, and close associate of 10th Sikh Guru, and Mistry Des Raj Kalsi of Sur Singh played an important role in re-construction of Akal Takht after it was destroyed by Ahmed Shah Abdali. In modern day Punjab, every house, every building is made by Tarkhans, all machinery such as combines, ploughs and harvesters are made by Tarkhans including manufacturing of tractors, also welding and repairing despite being a small minority. Tarkhans are the only people in Indian sub-continent to be masters of more than occupations.
Ancient History of Tarkhans:
Kasgarli Mahmut was 11th century scholar from Kashgar. He explained the word Tarkhan in the following way: "It is a name given before the Islamic religion. It means prince (Bey, Umar) in Arghu language." It is clear the word Tarkhan was not pure Turkish and that it was adopted into Turkish from the old language of Sogdiana. This was proved in the Turkish dictionary Divan u Lugat it-Turk written by Kasgarli Mahmut. Sogd was a name of a nation who settled in Balasagun. These were of the Sogd race. Sogd lay between Bukhara and Samarqand. Sogdia (/ˈsɒɡdiə/) or Sogdiana was an ancient Iranian civilization.
Historian H. Beveridge in his paper titled Tarkhan and Tarquinius points out that antiquity of Tarkhan is evidenced by the fact it's etymology is lost. He also states that Tarkhan was both a personal title and the name of a tribe. Bipin Shah in his paper titled Patali of Alexander, Sack of Nagar Thatta and Arghoon rule of Sindh talks about pre-historic central asian tribe named Tarkhan. Beveridge, Isaac Taylor, C. R. Condor and J. G. R. Farlong in their writings all agree that Tarkhan, Tarkan and Tarquin are same. Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, or Tarquin the Elder, was the legendary fifth king of Rome from 616 to 579 BC. Tarkhan was used among the Hittites (1700BCE- 1200BCE) to refer the tribal Chiefs. Also, the the Kassites (1531BCE-1155 BCE) had god called Tartakhan.
Khodadad Rezakhani of Freie Universität (Berlin) in the paper titled Continuity and Change in Late Antique Irān: An Economic View of the Sasanians writes (year is 560 AD): "These are the famous Nezak Tarkhans who claimed descent from the Alkhon king Khingila (Grenet 2002: 218). We know that these Tarkhans controlled the passes across the Hindukush both to Bamiyan and also to Kabul, via the Panjshir Valley (Baker and Allchin 1991). Based on the pattern of the earlier Hephthalites, they established and controlled formidable castles on both sides of the Surkhab River in southern Tokharistan, controlling the trade and military route from Bactria to Bamiyan (Grenet 2002: 218-20)."
In Eras of Humanity by Genealogy, Brian Starr writes about Kama Tarkhan of Huns. Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese traveller of 7th century AD also mentions various Tarkhans in Indian subcontinent such as Tarkhan of Samarkand, a meeting between king and 200 Tarkhans. Across the Hindukush of the First Millennium a collection of the papers by S. Kuwayama makes the mention of Chebishi Tarkhan who along with Tafu Tegin was sent to court of Tang Dynasty by King of Gandhara in 753 AD. Tarkhan Dynasty ruled over Gilgit in 7th and 8th century and was founded by a prince from Badakhshan. Further, founders of Maglot dynasty of Nagar and Ayash dynasty of Hunza were both Tarkhan princes. Tradition traces the origin of these Tarkhans to an imaginary Kayāni prince of Persia, by name Azur Jamshid, who is said to have fled here after the Arab conquest of Persia.
The town named Tarkhan in Egypt has been a site of various archeological diggings, some which were as old as 4000 BCE and oldest woven piece of cloth called Tarkhan Dress. In the town of Chal Tarkhan (Iran) many artifacts were found belonging to Sassanian Period (224 to 651 AD). Tarkhankut is name of peninsula in Ukraine and there are various places named Tarkhan in Russia. Tarkhans have been present in Indian subcontinent atleast since 6th century AD.
The ancient history of Tarkhans is also evidenced from the origin of various Tarkhan clans, such as Ubbi was a Germanic tribe and Bahra a Arabic tribe. There are places named after various Tarkhan clans in Iran (Panesar E-Takshan, Hunejan etc) and Tarkhan clans such as Siyan and Salh are also found among Kurds. Padam and Rattan being of native Indian origin. Menander 1 a Indo-Greek king was born in place named Kalasi (Alexandria of the Caucasusn) around 165 BCE. More than 90% Tarkhans have Tarkhan exclusive clans, only a very little overlap with others.

• Bardish Chaggar: First female Leader of the Government in the House of Commons in the history of Canada.
• Baba Sukha Singh Kalsi: There are 7 episodes dedicated to his bravery in Panth Prakash.
• Sir Mota Singh Matharu, QC: First Asian to become judge in United Kingdom.
• Lt-Colonel Kamal Kalsi (US Army).
• Sardar Bahadur Ram Singh, M.V.O, K.-I.-H.: Legendary Sikh Architect
𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
According to 1881 census of British India there were 263,479 Tarkhan Sikhs. In the book The Crucial Decade by S.C. Sharma writes that Tarkhans too are found in all the three religious groups in this province, on 1921 their numerical strength in the (United) Punjab was 684,000. The small population of Tarkhans is also evidenced from the fact most of villages in Punjab used to have only three to four houses of Tarkhan families.

Tarkhan Traditons
Tarkhans engage in ancestor worship in the form of Jathere (ਜਠੇਰੇ) and Matti (ਮੱਟੀ), different Tarkhan clans have different jathere However, this practice is now dying. Members within a same clan (ਗੋਤ) are related by blood. For marriages, Tarkhan practice class endogamy but clan exogamy i.e. they marry with Tarkhans only, however outside their maternal (ਨਾਨਕੇ) and paternal (ਦਾਦਕੇ) clans.
Ramgarhia:
Some Tarkhan Sikhs identify with Ramgarhia as Ramgarhia Misl (Ramgarhia Confedration) was the one of most powerful Sikh Misl out of 12 misls. The founder and leader of Ramgarhia Misl was Maharaja Jassa Singh Bhamra, who was a Tarkhan himself and most of soldiers in Misl were from Tarkhan tribe. Strength of Misl is evidenced from fact that Ramgarhia Misl along with other sikh generals won Delhi and it was Jassa Singh Ramgarhia who dragged the Mughal throne from Delhi to Akal Takht, where it lies even today in Ramgarhia Bungas. In the Tawarikh Darbar Sahib by Udham Singh, it is written that Maharaja Jassa Singh of Ramgarhia Misl and his son Sardar Jodh Singh together contributed Rs 5 Lakh for construction of Ramgarhia Bungas.

টিভি নাটকে এত শিল্পী, কিন্তু দক্ষ অভিনেতা-অভিনেত্রীর বড্ড অভাব
টিভি নাটকে বাজেট সংকট, গল্প সংকট গেল কয়েক বছর ধরে লেগেই আছে। এসবের সঙ্গে আরো একটি বড় সংকট হচ্ছে টিভি নাটকে দক্ষ শিল্পীর। টিভি চ্যানেলের সংখ্যা বাড়ার পাশাপাশি নাটক নির্মাণের সংখ্যাও বেড়েছে। এই চ্যানেলগুলোর জন্য প্রতি বছর প্রায় ৭০০-৮০০ নাটক নির্মাণ হচ্ছে। এসব নাটকে তারকাশিল্পীদের বাইরে নতুন মুখও দেখা যায়। কিন্তু দর্শকের মনে নতুন শিল্পীরা আসন করে নিতে পারছেন না বলেই জানা যায়।

That is the experience "Annihilation" by Crisis Entertainment promises to give players in its upcoming release for free across all platforms. Players can expect to find themselves in a dystopian, cyberpunk, future, facing off against a diverse cast of characters with unique backstories that pay homage to 90's nostalgia like "Tin Goyenda", "Baker Bhai" or "Masud Rana".
The Business Standard sat down with the founder and CEO of Crisis Entertainment, Shadman Sian, to gain further insight into this promising game.

On my to do list of readings has been to read again, the brilliant John Berger who recently passed away. (YouTube Link to John Berger: Art of Looking / PDF version of the book online) – I realise how difficult it is to write a review of my own work – so, bare with me! :)
I wanted to reflect and review ‘At Kamalapur’ the current exhibition of portrait drawings at the Gram Bangla, 68 Brick Lane, London.
As the artist whose work is being exhibited,  I have struggled to be a little removed from it – to have until now to think about what it means to me to get to part of the process. I recently managed to visit the Picasso exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London- it left me intrigued, perhaps in a way I was not expecting – the image that continues to play on my mind is the one ‘Claude Drawing’ it struck a cord in me – and reminded me of a drawing I did of the children drawing at the station, ‘The site of Drawing’ : a slight deviation, but reflects for me quickly – influences and inspirations that continually reshape the work we do and the meanings we take from them. Time provides, always some scope for critical reflection.
A lot of my occupation within this strand of life, of self exploration as artist in a situated environment has been to force myself to ‘look’, and ‘see’ and ‘hear’ with quite possibly a rudimentary tool set – pencils, paper, charcoals, Chinese ink and sometimes oil pastels.  Why these set of tools? because they are simple, they are honest materials to work with in depicting lines, movements, marks, scratches, shades of light and dark onto paper, they allow for abstraction and focus and the potential to re-work until what I draw, connects with what I think am seeing. Its tough.
‘At Kamalapur’ exhibition finally provides an opportunity to hear about how other people – the public- look and see these drawings, removed away from the site of Dhaka’s main station.  What is it that the artist wants to present, and in this case – represent? ‘I would wish my portraits to be of the people, not like them. Not having a look of the sitter, being them’. (Lucian Freud)
The curated space, with eight A2 drawings, (2 figures, 6 portraits) framed strongly in black; and the selection of similar drawings provides the potential to have a conversation. I left it to the viewer to imagine what the life of each drawing maybe about. It has led to interesting dialogue.
I did not have any interest in recreating or curating the experiences of being in the station, as such it was not curated to be an immersive experience. As a snapshot of a project spanning now two years, in various shapes and forms, it really simply acts as an introduction for me, to really think about the purpose of art and drawing and also the intent to exhibit. The obsessions of technique, of aesthetic qualities, of proportion is slowly being left to one side- yet, the significance of them not being lost. Perhaps we are not being critical enough – of its intentions, the ethics and mortality, of such ideas.  The number of times I have left the space emotionally vulnerable has beguiled me, yet, I go back. Wanting to continually push the ways that I see.
Within this particular drawing process, the abstraction to a white paper space, to limited interference – reduced to the face, to the eyes or sometimes the figure. I continue to question how I look at people and what it means to be. The sitters are people, as much as you and I are, and its that human quality, through the technique of drawing, that I am keen to understand. What does it mean to be a human being?  especially on a piece of paper? the question to challenge the potential of the art making process. The drawings are often transitory, of a moment in time of a person’s life. Sometimes, larger than life, often, they still feel romanticised. A failure on my part, perhaps?
However, when work is presented in a restaurant space, in a street filled with so much activity, and madness of culture and consumption, does it work? Or is it that, the romance of the idea – of being lost in such spaces – of having other things to do, despite it being carefully placed? It being the backdrop to a busy canteen of people of eating and chatting? So, how much abstraction and curation is required here? Does the art command itself to be seen? and how will people know? Do I care so much about that? What makes me feel uncomfortable? What prods me to continue on asking and potentially making? Can it be more than emotive? instinctual? The potential to see a truth, an outpouring of love? it is hard to say. Even so, I tried to summarise, the context of presenting these drawings in a space on Brick Lane, in a simple way. In order to allow the viewer to see exactly what it is that I am focused on.  Perhaps, I also need to ask others write a review, and a continual conversation to take place – as build up to a potentially larger exhibition and publication.
The exhibition is free to view and runs until 22- January 2017 from 10am – 11pm, daily.

ABOUT: AT KAMALAPUR
‘At Kamalapur’ is an on-going art project by Ruhul Abdin, and forms as part of a series of portrait drawings of people at the Kamalapur Railway Station, in Bangladesh’s capital, the megacity of Dhaka.  
Drawn from life, in conte charcoal and pencil on A2 drawing paper and studies across sketchbooks, the portraits express what the artist sees, and feels at the time. There is a rigour of revisiting the site, and re-drawing the same sitters, if chance permits.  
There are very limited conversations, or even time for such an activity with his sitters, and therefore, a lot of the portraits will only be a memory of seeing.  Those portraits where conversations have taken place, it is in confidence and in respect to the sitter, to not then expose those stories. 
Concentration is the main challenge, and so is the ability to let go of the drawing, when a sitter decides that they do not want to be sitting for the portrait drawing anymore.  
It is up to the viewer to imagine what the life of each sitter may be.
Dhaka, it is one of the most dense megacities in the world, with a population of over 17 million people. Kamalapur Station is the largest in the country and the most important terminal for transportation between Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh.
