E20161004-0001—Calliandra californica by John Rusk Via Flickr: Calliandra californica—Baja fairy duster. This plant, a native of Baja California, barely makes it into the California Floristic Province. I have another photo of the species in habitat at a location that must be near the southern border of the province. This specimen has been growing in a sunny, well-protected spot on the west side of our home since the late 1990s. It blooms every year. Photographed at a private garden in Berkeley, CA

Calliandra ‘Sierra Starr’
This modest-sized shrub is a hybrid between 2 species of Calliandra (sometimes called “fairy duster”). One of these is Calliandra eriophylla, native to the southwestern U.S. and adjacent northwestern Mexico. The other is Calliandra californica, from Baja California. The burst of bright-red stamens makes its flowers very showy, and it does not hurt that it keeps this up for much of the year. The cultivar name is sometimes incorrectly listed as ‘Sierra Star’, but it was named after nurseryman Greg Starr, so the second “r” is not a typo. It belongs to the Mimosa subfamily of the Pea Family (Fabaceae).

Red fairy duster / Baja fairy duster (calliandra californica) Magical little puffs! Interestingly, the leaves, rather than the flowers close at night.

Baja fairy duster (Calliandra californica)
“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder without any such gift from the fairies, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.” ― Rachel Carson

The Baja Fairy Duster (Calliandra californica) is a native shrub growing up to 6 ft with a bright red inflorescence and bipinnate leaves that actually close at night and conserve water very well making this an excellent drought-tolerant (xeriscape) wildlife and ornamental species. For those who are herbologically inclined, it is also used as a calming, mind-leveling nervine flower essence and for the friendly neighborhood permaculturist, it's a N-fixer!
