Leave them begging for mercy, promising to do anything just to make it stop.

Leave them exhausted, barely able to keep their eyes open let alone put one foot in front of the other.

Leave them so broken they can’t bring themself to care about anyone or anything.

Leave them a blubbering mess, stumbling over their words trying to say the right thing to please whumper.

Leave them so mortified by everything that’s happened to them that they don’t even want to be found anymore because they don’t want people to know.

Honestly there is something so sadistically fun thinking of Zera's heart breaking when Bailey loses their progress and starts giving them the same terrified obedience that they once gave Slipknot.

Poor hero actually saw real progress only for it all to be undone and made worse with Bailey now fearing them too

Like I hate the thought of Bailey being recaptured but it offers up so much potential for Slipknot to mess with their head further. Like tell them that the heroes gave them up or something and as time goes on and there's no help in sight Bailey can't help but wonder if it's true.

Mwahahaha you're on the same wavelength as I am! Whether it's through Slipknot's interference, or a mistake that Zera makes, somehow Bailey is now terrified of Zera and giving them (and the rest of the heroes, but it hits Zera hardest) the same terrified obedience as they gave Slipknot, as you said.

Zera is just. Horrified. And they want to break down and scream and cry and rage about it, but they can't, because it will just make the situation worse. So now they have to keep their composure as long as Bailey is around, no matter how much they want to crumble.

I'm not sure which setup I like better, actually! If it's because of Slipknot, there's that angst from outside interference and that's always fun. But if it's something that Zera does? Oh. Sweet, sweet angst.

OOooooooooh what about both??? After Bailey is rescued after the recapture arc, something Zera does plays into that conditioning that Slipknot did and sets Bailey off. So you get the best of both situations!

If you're not even strong enough to hold two contradictory beliefs in your mind, you're not strong enough to handle reality.

If you never forget what you are, you'll never be punished for rebelling, and if you never rebel, you'll never forget who you belong to.

My brain fucking melts for a whumpee struggling to make eye contact—

When they avert their eyes in shame, when their cheeks grow hot and they can’t look whumper in the eye—When Whumper grips their jaw and forces them to look up, relishing in how unsettled they look from even a second of eye contact. 

“Does this put you on edge?” 

Whumper keeps a tight grip on their jaw, tilting their head slightly to the side, inspecting their face, smiling the whole time.

“You know your eyes don’t belong up here. It feels unnatural, doesn’t it?”

“I—yes, sir.”  

Whumper smiles at the quiver in their voice, the way their eyes automatically drop when whumper releases their jaw. 

“Where does your gaze belong then, hm?”

There is no hesitation this time.

"At your feet, sir"

Hm......

After hours of torture, practically ignoring Whumpee's begging, Whumper gets that one tool that Whumpee is the most afraid of. Already being exhausted from the long and excruciating session, when they see that specific tool, they are too weak to even react. They just silently cry, looking up at Whumper with their eyes begging, trying to get them to have mercy, even the smallest bit of mercy on them.

But Whumper proceeds to prepare the tool (whatever it might be), and something breaks in Whumpee. The thought of knowing that the pain won't stop, and it will get even worse is just too much for them to bear. They don't even resist when Whumper walks up to them and starts using the tool. They don't scream, don't beg, they simply can't.

They are just too weak and exhausted to make a sound.

But that doesn't stop Whumper from causing them even more torment.

It was probably unintentional because every plot discussion on the BioWare boards at the release of Mass Effect 3 made it painfully clear nobody in the company understood the reasons for the backlash, nobody understood why 2 was more popular than 1 (it feels obvious to me but it's like their target audiences barely intersect) and that 3 was a misguided attempt to recapture as many people as they could from either while putting in the most minimal amount of effort possible into script quality. Or maybe it was deliberate effort of one person.

Part of that is because LARGE games like that are written by committee - one writer writes one part of the game, then an editor is supposed to connect the pieces. It's how it's always been for Fallout-derivative games since Fallout itself (and BioWare hasn't made a not-Fallout-derivative type since MDK 2).

Mass Effect 2 in particular is already structured like a TV series with focus episodes on party members interspersed with Big Plot episodes (all three of them - Normandy's Destruction, Horizon and Suicide Mission, the DLC also adds Arrival as the fourth and the only one that actually matters to the overarching plot of the trilogy)

So it's not impossible a writer put in satire of the prison-industrial complex and it got put in without enough passes through the copaganda machine. Y'know, how despite Garrus's entire arc being about how Good Cops get pushed down in C-Sec, you get the whole deal with Bailey and Doing Good Cop Work Because Apparently There Aren't Enough Good Cops/Too Much Red Tape.

(highly similar how Dragon Age 2 has our token Morally Decent Person of the party, Aveline, regularly shunt Cop Work onto the party instead of her subordinates without the writing room considering how it makes her look as guard captain)

The smartest socio-political commentary BioWare has ever made is in Mass Effect 2 in the space prison mission where the warden is simultaneously knowingly running a for-profit reverse kidnapping/ransom and human trafficking scheme and while still genuinely believing himself to be the only thing standing between Depraved Criminals and Civilization because fuck if that doesn't describe the mentality of every cop and prison guard and the "logic" of entire prison-industrial complex in a nutshell
