Orihime's Powers and Representation
Tumblr media
Orihime's power in regards to her characterization. Orihime is an idealist. She exists in a very violent world, yet refuses to fight unless she's under really terrible pressure. She used to see Ichigo as her Prince Charming, her Knight in Shining Armor, until she realized that is simply wasn't the case. The girl was pretty much living in her own little fantasy world to cope with her HUGE troubles, which is why yanking her out of it and making her face a reality so stange to her own left her so distraught. So what do her powers do exactly? Reject reality.
Also in regards to Orihime, the reason why Loly and Menoly hate her even more after she uses her Reality Warper powers to bring them back to life. is more complicated than just being two ungrateful sadists. To start, Hollows/Arrancar/Espada as a whole are beings that are born when souls don't cross to Soul Society and stay in our world, becoming corrupted with supernatural energies. And here, two Arrancar girls (Hollows who have removed their mask and gained Shinigami-like powers) have witnessed how a lowly human has the power to undo death, pretty much messing with everything they know about their own existence. What is a crowning moment for Orihime, in the view of these two girls (and especially Loly, who had a better look at all of this than Menoly since she was horribly mutilated by Grimmjow yet she was not dead) is like catching view of an abomination, which explains the whole "she's a monster" deal.
Hollows, beings that are born from death, despair and fear, are being faced with a being who can literally rewrite reality so that events do not occur. Taken in this context, Orihime is less like an angel of mercy to these two and more like a God from their perspective. A being whose nature and abilities are so alien that they outright defy explanation. Considering this, its understandable that they would react less than pleasantly to what happened to them.
Further to the above point on Orihime's character in relation to her powers — there's a very specific reason why Orihime actually used to be useless on the battle field, and it's not any kind of limit on her power. It's been heavily alluded to that Orihime's power is pretty much limited by her own imagination. Naturally, when it comes to helping people, her healing powers can reverse pretty much anything. However, think about who Orihime is. She wouldn't hurt a fly if she could help it. She can take down random Hollows like that mook that was attacking Tatsuki in the school because it's monstrous in appearance, and they'll hurt more people if she doesn't attack. Place a humanoid enemy in front of her, and will take her a while to see that she should consider them an enemy, and she simply cannot attack them unless it's really needed. This is why Tsubaki's power will always be the most limited of her set.
Actually, about Tsubaki... think about the Shiten Koushun aka Shield of Four Heavens' Resistance. How is it formed? Via adding Tsubaki to the Three God Reflection Shield, thus making him turn a defensive barrier into an offensive weapon. Tsubaki is the weakest of the six Rikka spirits as well as the one who's less like her, personality wise; and the ones forming the Reflection Shield (Hinagiku, Lilly and Baigon) are relatively similar to her in character. This means that, if she wants to join the battle effectively, Orihime must accept to use Tsubaki yet not by simply sending him off towards the enemy (like many of her haters want her to), but by integrating him to the side that she dominates the most. Only by using Tsubaki in combination with Hinagiku, Lily, and Baigon can she draw his attack potential... mirroring how Orihime must now fight alongside Ichigo, Chad, and others if she wants to not stay behind. Also, when was the Shiten Koushun seen first? When she and Ichigo were attacked by Ginjou. Who was actually a humanoid enemy (more exactly the formwr Substitute Shinigami, but we didn't know that back then, and neither did she). This means that Orihime either is working on the issue mentioned above or has already gotten past behind it.
As for her Santen Kesshun (Three God Reflection Shield)? It too, is not the fragile thing it seems to be. It is specifically stated to Reject an attack and its consequences. It stands to perfectly good reason that it doesn't matter if the shield shatters instantly or not — another can always be thrown up. What matters is that whether the shield shatters or not, it genuinely DOES reject the attack that hits it.
Furthermore, it actually makes a ton of sense that it shatters so easily, too. Orihime's powers are a form of reality warping, after all, being what Aizen calls "the Rejection of Events"; she's essentially the Queen of Retcons. When her base shield blocks an attack, it also retcons that attack out of existence. But then, that raises the question... if there was never any attack to block, then why would she even make a shield in the first place? The reason it shatters isn't that it's fragile; it's the shield disappearing in a Puff of Logic because the attack it was meant to block suddenly never existed in the first place.

I am once again drunk and thinking about Orihime and how we never really got to see her powers used to their full potential here comes a poorly constructed finger painting presentation I conjured up of potential power ups for Hime bc while Shiten Kōshun was a step in the right direction for her, she only gets to use it like ONCE in the fuckin manga and I'm going insane over that!!
First one utilizes 5 of her Shun Shun Rikka, all but Tsubaki. Shunō on top. Shunō has always felt like a bit of the leader of the fairy group so I felt her to be the most fitting to be at the top, providing the healing. Baigon, Hinagiki, Lily and Ayame on bottom providing the shield. Ayame is usually helping with the healing, but with this ability she lends her power to Shunō so she can help with the barrier, considering Sōten Kisshun has been shown to be kind of a barrier along with a healer, it isn't too farfetched to assume Ayame can shield too.
This ability would allow Orihime to heal, as well as protect, at a larger scale. We've only really seen her able to heal two people at once at most, and I feel like having a mass healing/barrier ability would have been SUPER useful during TYBW, considering the, you know, thousands of injured and casualties. Plus, while this barrier is up, she could use Tsubaki outside still. Idk Japanese but considering the order of her ability names this would be like. Goten-something lol. "Go" meaning both 5 and protect could prove to make a nice punny name probably lol.
Second ability uses all 6 fairies, shaping them into a six pointed heart and shooting a deadly Cero/Cero-like beam(fullbringer powers are hollow-like so why tf not). Extremely powerful and a last resort bc it would take a massive amount of energy. Similar to how Tsubaki is only as strong as Orihime's drive to harm, this would only be as strong as her drive to protect the ones she loves (six pointed heart, six hearts beat AS ONE?? LOOK AT MY VISION BOY) and why not have her magical girly pose, pointer finger and all while she shoots it in homage to Ulquiorra 👀👀
That concludes my "Orihime's powers were interesting and she deserved to have her powers develop Kubo fr" presentation I'm going back to my drink and finger painting my love for Orihime yea yea

(shoulder touch prompt!) [ SHIELD ]: the sender catches hold of the receiver's shoulder and draws them back and away from a threat, pulling them behind them for their safety.

All she could do was stare at the hollow before her, the deafening roar of its power could be felt deep in her soul. Blood was dripping down her body, a hand gripping the other as it trickled down on her skin and dripped to the floor. Orihime felt real terror running through her, what was she supposed to do?
Her powers weren't working, she was having such a hard time summoning her Shun Shun Rikka, no matter how hard she tried. She thought it, yelled it, touched the pins that held her hair back, anything she could think of summing them. But nothing, no a whisper, not a greet, not even a Tsubaki who would normally yell and force her to concentrate. She was rendered useless, a normal human girl who was at the mercy of a hollow. Please, I don't want to die here!
The hollow started moving towards her, the look of hunger on its face. Orihime felt frozen, her body unable to move as fear cruised through her veins. All she could do was plead, repeating it quickly and with a quiver to her voice. "Hinagiku, Lily, Baigon." A finger stayed on the pins as if hoping the contact would work. "I reject" The hollow got closer. "I reject" As steps backward quickened. But nothing. "I reject! I r-reject! I reject!" Soon she felt like she could feel the breath of the hollows scream, closing her eyes she prepared for the impact. Instead, felt a hand pull her back from her shoulders, a body moved forward and the clink of a sword, feeling the energy of the following push back. Her eyes opened and she saw him, the familiar Shinigami substitute protecting her. He stood between her and the beast now off in front of them, injured as it was losing. All Orihime could do was look up a the boy, tears overflowing in her eyes as she let a hand come to the injury once again.

"K-Kurosaki-kun, you came." And she felt the instant relief of being safe again, her friend showing up at just the right time. She was safe, she would live, thanks to 𝒽𝒾𝓂.

BACKSTORY (COPY AND PASTE FROM WIKI)
Orihime and her brother, Sora Inoue, were raised by a drunken father and a prostitute mother, who always argued and beat their children. Fearing that their parents would kill Orihime, in the March that Sora turned eighteen, he ran away with Orihime, who was three years old, and raised her on his own from then on. For nine years, Orihime and Sora lived in harmony despite the fact that Orihime was bullied in school because of her unusual hair color. One day, Sora gave Orihime a pair of hairpins. However, Orihime refused to wear them because she said they were childish. That day, Sora died, and Orihime began wearing the hairpins every day since. After Sora's death, Orihime prayed for him every day. A year after Sora died, Orihime met Tatsuki Arisawa and befriended her and the amount of days she prayed for him diminished. After entering Karakura High School, she stopped praying for him and instead talked about Ichigo before she left and when she returned from school. She wanted to show Sora that she was happy and that he did not have to worry about her.
Since Sora's death, Orihime has lived by herself in Karakura Town, receiving financial support from a distantly related aunt living elsewhere.

PERSONALITIES
a sweet smart yet naive girl, neurodivergent with ADHD. really hyper and likes to talk about things she likes. likes to cook up weird food with weird combination making her food looks not very edible, but nevertheless all of them taste good, it just looks really unappetizing. she's not very good with social cues and tends to misunderstood other points or sometimes she tends to take things as jokes too literally or too seriously. heavily insecure about herself due to her past. she tends to zone out everyday and likes to stare at a wall. she stims by flapping her hands and jumping or overall just walking around, one of her stims is also really hurtful because at times when she gets too excited but couldn't expressed it she'll starts hitting her legs or arms.

ABILITIES
Shun Shun Rikka (盾舜六花, Six Flowers of the Hibiscus Shield; Viz "Six Princess Shielding Flowers"): Orihime's spirit energy is harbored in the pair of six-petal flower-shaped hairpins that her brother gave her. Shun Shun Rikka is composed of six spirits that reside within the hairpins, each of which is two petals on the clip when inactive. Only spiritually aware beings can see them. They reside in her hair-clips, which are shaped like six-petaled flowers. Through various combinations of the six fairies, Orihime has the power to reject phenomena by denying or undoing events in various forms. This power can be used for attack, defense, or healing (depending on the combination).
Santen Kesshun (三天結盾, Three Sacred Links Shield): is Orihime's defensive technique. It repels attacks by placing a shield between the enemy and target. The incantation arranges Hinagiku, Lily, and Baigon into a triangle which has the ability to repel the "outer shield". Because the barrier rejects negative events, it can also function as an airbag of sorts, allowing Orihime and anyone else nearby to survive a potentially lethal fall unharmed. Orihime is later able to shape Santen Kesshun into a dome-shaped barrier large enough to easily hold herself and other individuals
Sōten Kisshun (双天帰盾, Twin Sacred Return Shield): is Orihime's "healing" technique. It surrounds something to return it to its former, complete state. It rejects, reverses, and reconstructs phenomena that have occurred, even phenomena that Orihime hasn't witnessed. The incantation summons Ayame and Shun'ō to form a half-oval barrier around whatever or whomever Orihime wishes. Their ability is to repel the "inner shield." The shield placed inside means that they repel the damage within a limited area. In other words, they return a subject covered by the shield to the state that they were in before taking damage. Orihime fully restored Grimmjow's destroyed arm from nothing. Sōsuke Aizen describes this as "The Rejection of Events". Her ability is to limit, reject, and negate any kind of event that has happened to her target. Yasochika Iemura comments that the technique's healing speed is potentially faster than Isane Kotetsu's and his own. Far more powerful than "Temporal Regression" or "Spatial Regression", it is a power that trespasses into God's territory. Originally, Orihime wasn't able to restore a destroyed Tsubaki, but Hachigen Ushōda states that since she has powers very close to his own, she should be able to restore him to his original form, even without a shattered fragment. Later, she can fully resurrect the dead. While Orihime can heal wounds quickly, it takes longer for her to replenish the patient's Reiatsu. Large amounts of foreign spiritual pressure around a wound makes her power to reject ineffective
Koten Zanshun (孤天斬盾, Solitary Sacred Cutting Shield): is Orihime's offensive technique. It rejects the fusion of matter and splits it. The incantation summons Tsubaki, who has the ability to repel "both sides of the shield." He breaks through the enemy, puts up a shield inside, and repels the combined substance, splitting the enemy in two. While Tsubaki can cut through basically anything, Orihime's general dislike of combat and hesitance to use lethal force degrades the effectiveness of the technique, making him easy to counter and equally easy to injure
Shiten Kōshun (四天抗盾, Shield of Four Heavens' Resistance): is one of Orihime's techniques. It combines Shun Shun Rikka's offensive and defensive properties. The incantation integrates Tsubaki into the center of her Santen Kesshun ability, creating a triangular shield which, at the very instant of receiving an attack, disperses the resultant force as a concentrated explosion which is automatically returned along the attack's opposing trajectory

The designs for Hime’s Shun Shun Rikka seemed really sporadic and it was one of the things that distracted me my first time watching and also reading fully recently. I stewed over it long enough that I figured I’d give a redesign a shot, and overall I’m pleased with how they turned out.
I went a little heavier on the influence of each of their respective flowers, and tried to tie in their colours, in addition to the colours of each other and to Orihime as well.

Maker’s Notes:
This was hard given that I’m not really an IchiHime shipper (I’m IchiRuki devotee). I hope my symbolisms portrayed the ship well. No hate here, just trying to be neutral with my art.
And yes, I did just make an IchiRuki flag. I don’t want to start any wars here. Just giving respects to all the ships.
Again, NO hate here.

Perhaps he is a little bit deaf but amongst all that stuttering, it took a while for him to piece the words together. His eyes were downcast, the map was already crumbling in his hands due to the heavy downpour of rain that scattered across the forest’s horizons.
In short, he was pissed. More at himself than the girl who had tagged along with him mistakenly believing that he had a good sense of direction. “Look, I’m sure if we follow the sun we’re gonna get outta this place.” He looked up at the clouds, noticing they were still downcast and swore under his breath.

私は火無菊!!: watashi wa Hinagiku!!
I(polite) am [Fireless Chrysanthemum]!!
but specifically the pronunciation, “Hinagiku” is a synonym for 雛菊: “Daisy”
わしは梅厳!: washi wa Baigon!
I(used by old men) am [Stern Plum]!
あたしはリリィ!: atashi wa LILY!
I(used by young women/girls) am [the English word Lily]!
ぼくは舜桜!: boku wa Shun'ou!
I(boy-ishness) am [Excellent Cherrytree]!
彼女はあやめ: kanojyo wa Ayame!
She(polite) is Ayame![菖蒲:Iris]
俺の名は椿鬼!!: ore no na wa Tsubaki!!
My(informal, masculine) name is [Camellia Devil]!!
One of my favorite little details that Kubo worked into the Shunshunrikka’s first and I just realized basically ONLY appearance (sans a few fleeting returns by Tsubaki) is that each character had a distinct use of pronouns that speaks to their personalities:
Hinagiku uses a kind of stilted, overly textbook pronoun.  It’s “formal” but in a way that doesn’t make him sound pretentious, just kind of mechanical.  It seems to fit his strange cyborg eye and rigid, nosferatu-like disposition.
Baigon speaks in a distinctly outdated way that makes him sound like an old man.  It’s also a distinctly masculine pronoun, so he doesn’t just sound old, but a little gruff, suiting his broad build.
Lily speaks in a cute diminutive way that matches her perky demeanor.
Shun’ou speaks in a “boyish” way, in that it makes him sound youthful, but it is also commonly the pronoun a lot of anime/manga writers use to make tomboyish characters use to sound more masculine but without taking away their more conventionally feminine demeanor.  It’s probably why the anime cast a woman as Shun’ou’s voice actor.
Shun’ou actually introduces Ayame, who remains silent, which suits her apparently shy demeanor.  He introduces her as “kanojyo” which is literally written with the characters for “That + Woman.”  It’s kind of hard to describe, but as a third person pronoun it refers to a woman with some familiarity and formality, but not so much that it suggests anything unusual, but in contrast to Lily’s cutesy, energetic and informal pronoun it highlights how Ayame is much more demure.
And then of course, Tsubaki is the rowdy and foul mouthed fighter among the 6, and he appropriately uses “ore” which is a distinctly informal pronoun and makes him sound like a delinquent or a thug.
shame we NEVER got to see any more of their personalities ever again...
