The serious effects of global warming have led to a return to ancestral bio-construction techniques, including Bahareque, which is ecological, bioclimatic, earthquake-resistant and acoustic. As a sustainable housing solution in the countryside and poor urban areas, but also for new cultural, tourist and recreational projects due to its adaptability to modern bio-design. In Barichara, the bahareque has always been integrated with tapia pisada, being used for the division of common areas, because they take up less space. For the enclosure of Caneyes, construction of country houses, cabins, corrals, etc. Bahareque construction begins with the digging of trenches in the ground, where wooden or guadua columns are placed to support a frame woven from sticks and cane. This is filled with stones and covered with mud. The mud is prepared beforehand. It is wet and mixed by kicking it with the feet or with the help of oxen, until it acquires the right plasticity. It is then mixed with straw, sawdust or bagasse to give it more adherence.

Greener Takeout: Sustainable Packaging Strategies for Modern Restaurants
Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword; it’s a necessity. As climate change and plastic pollution continue to grab headlines, more industries are stepping up to reduce their environmental impact—and the restaurant industry is no exception. One key area where restaurants can make a difference is through sustainable packaging.
Whether it’s takeout containers, delivery bags, or straws, the packaging used to serve food has a profound effect on the environment. But the good news is, switching to eco-friendly alternatives doesn’t have to be a complicated or expensive endeavor. In fact, it can offer significant benefits to your business, your customers, and the planet.
In this article, we’ll dive into the importance of sustainable packaging for restaurants, explore practical alternatives to single-use plastic, and show how restaurants can make the transition to greener packaging.
Why Sustainable Packaging Matters:
The foodservice industry is a major contributor to waste. In fact, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), food packaging accounts for a large portion of the plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans. Some statistics to consider:
Plastic Waste: Around 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year, with much of it coming from single-use items like food packaging.
Landfill Impact: Items like Styrofoam and plastic containers take hundreds of years to break down, leaching toxic chemicals into the environment in the process.
For restaurants, adopting sustainable packaging is not just about being eco-friendly—it’s also about responding to growing consumer demand for green practices. A 2023 survey found that 73% of consumers are willing to pay more for food from a brand that is environmentally responsible. In other words, sustainable packaging can directly influence your restaurant’s bottom line.
The Key Benefits of Sustainable Packaging:
Before we look at alternatives, let’s explore why sustainable packaging is beneficial for restaurants.
1. Environmental Impact Reduction
The most obvious benefit is the reduction in environmental harm. By switching to biodegradable or recyclable materials, restaurants can cut down on single-use plastic waste, reduce carbon footprints, and contribute to a cleaner planet.
2. Cost Efficiency
While eco-friendly options might seem more expensive upfront, they can be cost-effective in the long term. Many sustainable materials are cheaper to produce, and some alternatives, like compostable containers, help reduce waste disposal fees. Additionally, reusable packaging models can eliminate the need for frequent purchases of disposable products.
3. Meeting Customer Expectations
Modern diners care about sustainability. A growing number of customers actively seek out businesses that align with their values. By offering green packaging, you appeal to environmentally conscious customers, which can drive loyalty, repeat business, and word-of-mouth recommendations.
4. Compliance with Regulations
As cities and governments worldwide introduce stricter regulations on plastic use, adopting sustainable packaging now means staying ahead of the curve. By making the transition early, you can avoid potential fines or legal issues related to plastic bans or recycling mandates.
5. Enhancing Your Brand Image
Sustainable Packaging Alternatives for Restaurants:
There is a wide range of sustainable packaging options available to restaurants today. The key is finding the right balance of cost, functionality, and environmental impact.
1. Compostable and Biodegradable Containers
Made from plant-based materials like cornstarch, sugarcane, and bamboo, compostable packaging breaks down quickly in industrial composting systems. It’s perfect for takeout containers, plates, and utensils.
Sugarcane (Bagasse): A byproduct of sugar production, bagasse containers are durable, microwaveable, and compostable. They can handle both hot and cold foods.
Cornstarch: This plant-based plastic is biodegradable and compostable, making it an excellent alternative for single-use cutlery and food containers.
Bamboo: A fast-growing, renewable resource, bamboo is often used for utensils, skewers, and takeaway packaging. It’s sturdy, compostable, and naturally antimicrobial.
2. Recycled Paper and Cardboard
Paper and cardboard are two of the most widely accepted recyclable materials. Many foodservice items like pizza boxes, sandwich wraps, and takeout bags can be made from recycled paper or cardboard. These materials are biodegradable and recyclable, making them a more sustainable choice.
Kraft Paper: This unbleached, brown paper is biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable. It’s commonly used for wrapping food, sandwich bags, or as a liner for takeaway boxes.
Recycled Cardboard: Takeout containers made from recycled cardboard are an eco-friendly alternative that’s still sturdy enough for most restaurant needs.
3. Glass and Aluminum Containers
Glass containers, while heavier and slightly more expensive, are reusable and 100% recyclable. They’re an excellent option for restaurants offering premium takeout or delivery options, especially for items like sauces, salads, or soups.
Aluminum is another widely recyclable material. Containers made from aluminum (such as for baked goods or leftovers) can be reused multiple times and recycled endlessly without degrading.
4. Plant-Based Plastics (PLA)
Polylactic acid (PLA) plastics are made from renewable resources like corn or sugarcane. These bioplastics are compostable, although they require industrial composting facilities to break down efficiently. PLA plastics can be used for everything from cups and containers to cutlery, but it’s important to make sure they are properly disposed of in the right composting environment.
5. Reusable Containers
For restaurants offering delivery or regular takeout, consider implementing a reusable container program. Customers could bring back their containers for a discount or a new meal in exchange. This not only cuts down on waste but also creates a sense of loyalty and community among your customer base.
Reusable Containers for Delivery: Partnering with a local service or using branded reusable containers for your takeout could set your restaurant apart. Think of it as a “returnable” system similar to reusable coffee cups.
6. Edible Packaging (Emerging Trend)
While still in its early stages, edible packaging made from seaweed, rice, or even fruit skins is an exciting innovation in sustainable packaging. These materials can eliminate waste entirely—customers can eat the packaging along with their food. While it’s not yet widespread, keep an eye on this area as it could transform how food is packaged in the future.
How Restaurants Can Make the Transition:
Transitioning to sustainable packaging isn’t an overnight process, but with a few strategic steps, restaurants can integrate eco-friendly alternatives seamlessly.
1. Assess Your Current Packaging

Look for packaging suppliers who specialize in eco-friendly products. Many companies now offer a range of sustainable packaging materials and can advise on which options are most suitable for your needs. Look for certifications such as compostable or recyclable to ensure you’re making the right choices.
3. Educate Staff and Customers
Ensure that your staff is well-informed about your sustainable packaging choices so they can answer customer questions. Use signage to educate customers about the environmental benefits of your packaging and how to dispose of it correctly. If you’re offering compostable packaging, make sure customers know where to compost it.
4. Monitor and Improve
Once you’ve switched to sustainable packaging, monitor its impact. Are your customers responding positively? Is there less waste? Track your waste disposal costs and look for opportunities to further improve your sustainability efforts.
5. Promote Your Green Efforts
Don’t keep your sustainability efforts a secret. Promote your use of sustainable packaging through social media, your website, and in-store signage. Customers love to support businesses that are transparent about their environmental practices.
Conclusion: A Green Shift for the Future
Switching to sustainable packaging is an investment that will pay off in the long run. Not only does it help protect the planet, but it can also build customer loyalty, enhance your brand, and ensure compliance with future regulations. While the process may take time and planning, the rewards are undeniable.
By embracing sustainable packaging, restaurants can play a pivotal role in the fight against plastic pollution, while simultaneously meeting the expectations of an eco-conscious customer base. Making the change isn’t just good for the environment—it’s good for your business too.

Green Olive Have Commercial Composting Certified by Australasian Bioplastics Association
Green Olive had achieved a certificate of conformance to the Australian Standard as 4736 by Australasian Bioplastics Association. The ABA is dedicated to promoting plastics that are biodegradable, compostable and based on renewable resources. Our certificate number is ABAP 10270, for our products: Sugarcane bagasse pulping (bowls, plates, container) (unprinted/uncoloured) up to a maximum thickness and grammage of 730 µm / 553 g/m2.
The ABA launched Australian Standard 4736-2006, compostable and biodegradable plastics “Biodegradable plastics suitable for composting and other microbial treatment” which is known as the ‘seedling logo’ certification system throughout Australia and New Zealand. The seedling logo clearly identifies and differentiates packaging materials as biodegradable packaging materials and compostable packaging materials. To be certified compostable and carry the seedling logo, suitable biopolymer materials must undergo a stringent test regime outlined by AS4736 and carried out by recognised independent accredited laboratories to the AS4736 standard.
What is Compostable?
Composting is the process of breaking down organic waste by microbial digestion to create compost. Compost has many beneficial uses including improving and fertilizing soil. To go through a composting process, organic waste requires the right level of heat, water, and oxygen. In a pile of organic waste, there are millions of tiny microbes that consume the waste, transforming the organic materials into compost.
Products that are designed to turn into nutrient-rich compost, a valuable resource that helps with the growth of plants. When products are composted there is no “waste” as nutrients are recycled. For a product to be labeled as "COMPOSTABLE", there are performance standards to be met first. Under the International Organization for Standardization (IOS), there are standards for both home and commercial composting. The main standards are from Europe, the US, and Australia.
Products manufactured by Green Olive, , including their compostable packaging, are tested and certified commercially compostable. For the above three things to be achieved for our packaging, optimal conditions are required: high temperature (on average 65℃), sufficient moisture and air, and the right population of microorganisms to chew down the waste. All these things are achieved in a commercial facility.
Bagasse compostable coffee cups and Biodegradable bagasse pulp cuplids have become a poster child for the anti-plastic movement, but we produce a lot more than cups and lids. We have bagasse food containers, bamboo cultery, biodegradable bagasse pulp plates, biodegradable bagasse pulp tray, biodegradable bagasse pulp clamshell, bagasse bawls, bagasse parcel boxes, paper straws and more compostable packaging for all occasions.

Mushroom Farming in Kerala: A Growing Agricultural Opportunity
Mushroom farming, once considered a niche agricultural practice, is steadily gaining popularity in Kerala due to its lucrative prospects and suitability to the region's climate. Known for its lush green landscapes and diverse agricultural practices, Kerala provides an ideal environment for cultivating various types of mushrooms, including oyster mushrooms, button mushrooms, and shiitake mushrooms.
Kerala's tropical climate and abundant rainfall create favorable conditions for mushroom cultivation throughout the year making it reasonable to do Mushroom Farming in Kerala. Unlike traditional crops that require extensive land and water resources, mushroom farming can be carried out in controlled environments such as sheds or polyhouses, making it a sustainable and cost-effective agricultural venture.
Types of Mushrooms Cultivated in Kerala
1. Oyster Mushrooms: Oyster mushrooms are one of the most popular varieties grown in Kerala due to their adaptability and high yield potential. They thrive in humid conditions and can be cultivated using a variety of substrates, including agricultural waste such as paddy straw and sugarcane bagasse.
2. Button Mushrooms: Button mushrooms are another sought-after variety known for their mild flavor and versatile culinary applications. They require cooler temperatures and controlled humidity levels, making them suitable for cultivation in shaded environments or climate-controlled facilities.
3. Shiitake Mushrooms: Shiitake mushrooms are prized for their rich umami flavor and medicinal properties. Cultivating shiitake mushrooms in Kerala typically involves inoculating hardwood logs with mushroom spawn and maintaining optimal moisture levels.
Steps Involved in Mushroom Farming
Successful mushroom farming in Kerala involves several key steps:
- Substrate Preparation: Selecting and preparing the substrate (growing medium) is crucial. Common substrates include agricultural residues like wheat straw, sawdust, or composted organic materials.
- Spawn Inoculation: Mushroom spawn, a vegetative growth stage of the fungus, is introduced into the substrate to initiate mushroom growth. Proper sterilization techniques and hygiene practices are essential to prevent contamination.
- Incubation and Fruiting: The inoculated substrate is kept in a dark, humid environment during the incubation period to allow mycelial growth. Once fully colonized, mushrooms begin to fruit, and environmental conditions are adjusted to promote healthy fruiting.
- Harvesting: Mushrooms are harvested at the peak of maturity to ensure optimal flavor and texture. Careful handling and proper storage are critical to maintain quality and shelf life.
Market Opportunities
The demand for mushrooms in Kerala extends beyond culinary preferences, with growing interest in their nutritional benefits and medicinal properties. Mushrooms are rich in protein, vitamins, and antioxidants, making them a valuable addition to the diet and a potential source of income for farmers.

How Can Companies Adapt to Eco-Friendly Trends?
The UK will soon ban the use of single-use plastics, which is not surprising given how much plastic ends up in our garbage and beaches. Consumers hate plastic that can only be used once, Instead, they prefer environmentally friendly containers over businesses that continue to pack food in them. Single-use plastics are not just extremely harmful to the environment. So, what are the best sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic?
Alternatives For Single-Use Plastic: When single-use plastic gets disposed of in garbage dumps, it can leak harmful chemicals into the environment and fail to biodegrade. It is important that you completely avoid using any single-use plastics in your packaging when using eco-friendly catering equipment.
Paper: Paper is a material that is very adaptable and may solve a lot of issues with single-use plastic. Paper straws are a great replacement for plastic straws since, as we all know, plastic straws cause a significant risk to marine life. They will not harm animals through their fast biodegradation.
In our grocery stores and food delivery, single-use plastic bags are common. They are quickly removed and end up in the garbage for hundreds or even thousands of years. Paper bags may, therefore, make a huge difference. These bags of paper make it easier to carry food, whether it's fruit and veggies or takeout, and they can be recycled. Bamboo: Bamboo is an excellent replacement for single-use plastic because, when it grows, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere rather than causing it to increase in temperature. When it comes to takeaway meals, plastic cutlery is an important issue. Bamboo cutlery is a wonderful option that will not break down over time. A possible replacement for plastic coffee shakers that frequently follow takeaway coffee is simply to use bamboo straws. Bamboo is a great substitute for single-use plastic since it regenerates from its own roots without any need for replanting, making it an incredibly adaptable and renewable crop.
Products that are recyclable: Using recyclable materials in place of single-use plastic is an alternative choice. Reusable glasses are now widely available for parties and other occasions. They are safe (they will break) and can be washed and used repeatedly. Packaging made of glass and stainless steel is another example of recyclable goods. While these solid substances could be washed and reused in many ways, they are not biodegradable.
Sugarcane or Bagasse: A new sustainable material that can easily replace single-use plastics is sugarcane fiber. The tough substance that remains after crushing sugarcane stalks to release juice is referred to as sugarcane, or bagasse. When mixed with water, this residue can be converted into fiber rather than being thrown away. Therefore, biodegradable plastic bowls, trays, bags, cartons, and other items can be produced. While Bagasse is totally biodegradable, it's a great alternative to single-use plastic.
Wood: Like bamboo, wood can be used in a lot of places where single-use plastic is not acceptable. Single-use plastic is quickly being replaced by wooden cutlery because it looks luxurious and biodegrades. Because wood is easily recycled and reused, and because it absorbs CO2 as it grows, it is one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. Applying wood also has the advantage of not harming the environment because any "waste" produced during the creation of wooden goods is 100% biodegradable.
What is the impact of moving to Eco-Friendly products? We have to do all in our power to fight the serious danger that single-use plastic presents to the environment, as it is a major cause of climate change. You can significantly reduce your company's carbon footprint by choosing to use recyclable packaging. Also, customers today are highly conscious of the environment and favor businesses that are decreasing their use of packaging and offering alternatives. This might strengthen your consumer base and improve the perception of your brand.
We will soon be able to replace single-use plastic with an abundance of sustainable alternatives, which will benefit the environment and increase corporate efficiency.

Aiden Lee Ping Wei - Agriculture waste recycled to produce Electricity
Aiden Lee Ping Wei is the Co-Founder and CEO of Graphjet Technology, pioneering the production of graphite and graphene directly from agricultural waste. In this post, Aiden Lee Ping Wei is sharing details on agriculture waste recycled to produce electricity.
Recycling agricultural waste to produce electricity is an increasingly popular method for sustainable energy production and waste management. This process not only helps in managing agricultural residues but also provides a renewable source of energy.
Here are some common methods used to convert agricultural waste into electricity:
Biogas Production:
Anaerobic Digestion: This process involves the breakdown of organic material in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas (a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide). Common agricultural wastes used include animal manure, crop residues, and food waste.
Biogas Utilization: The biogas can be used directly in combined heat and power (CHP) systems to generate both electricity and heat, or it can be upgraded to biomethane and injected into the natural gas grid.
Biomass Combustion:
Direct Combustion: Agricultural residues like straw, husks, and wood chips can be directly burned in biomass power plants to produce steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity.
Co-firing: Agricultural waste can be co-fired with coal or other fuels in existing power plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy production efficiency.
Gasification:
Thermal Gasification: This process converts organic material into syngas (a mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide) through high-temperature reactions with a controlled amount of oxygen. The syngas can be used to produce electricity in gas engines or turbines.
Pyrolysis:
Pyrolysis: This is the thermal decomposition of organic material at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. It produces bio-oil, syngas, and biochar. The syngas and bio-oil can be used for electricity generation, while biochar can be used as a soil amendment.
Liquid Biofuels:
Ethanol and Biodiesel Production: Agricultural waste such as corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, and other crop residues can be processed to produce ethanol or biodiesel. These biofuels can be used in generators to produce electricity.
Benefits of Using Agricultural Waste for Electricity:
Renewable Energy Source: Reduces reliance on fossil fuels and decreases greenhouse gas emissions.
Waste Management: Helps in managing and reducing agricultural waste, preventing it from being burned openly or left to decompose, which can cause environmental pollution.
Economic Advantages: Provides an additional revenue stream for farmers and creates jobs in rural areas.
Sustainable Farming: Enhances soil fertility and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers when by-products like biochar are used in fields.
Challenges:
Feedstock Supply: Continuous and reliable supply of agricultural waste can be challenging due to seasonal variations.
Technology Costs: Initial investment for setting up biogas plants, biomass power plants, or gasification units can be high.
Technical Expertise: Requires technical knowledge and expertise to operate and maintain the systems efficiently.
Examples of Successful Implementation:
Germany: Leading in biogas production with thousands of anaerobic digestion plants utilizing agricultural waste.
India: Various projects converting agricultural residues into biogas and electricity, especially in rural areas.
United States: Biomass power plants and biogas facilities are increasingly using agricultural waste to generate renewable energy.
In conclusion, recycling agricultural waste for electricity production is a viable and environmentally friendly approach to meet energy demands and manage waste sustainably. Advances in technology and supportive policies can further enhance the adoption and efficiency of these systems.
