Theo Loevendie The Rise of Spinoza
Ten years after the rave premiere of The Rise of Spinoza in 2014, the Dutch label Attacca released the live recording of Theo Loevendie’ one-act opera on CD. Here’s the review of the concert in NTRZaterdagMatinee I wrote at the time. After a decade, the opera is as poweful as ever, and the recording catches all the subtle details. Amsterdam, 11 October 2014 The audience jump to their feet the…

Important to understand here that there is a very big difference between AI in general and generative large language models, which are just one specific form of AI. People often use AI as a term just to referto Gemini and the like, but that's wildly incorrect.
A hospital saying they use AI does not necessarily mean they go "hey gemini, this patient says they have x and y symptom, what diagnose should I make?". It's much more likely to mean that they have, for example, fed thousands and thousands of pictures of mammograms into a learning system, each labelled with "normal" or "abnormal", after which they can input new pictures and the AI will, based on all the data it absorbed, calculate the likelihood of something being abnormal or not. That's something AI is actually very good at: one specific task, based on carefully curated neutral data. It picks up patterns we can't see, or much more quickly than we ever could. And the accepted way of using it in medical circles is, for example, letting the AI screen a massive amount of data (which otherwise would take weeks or months of human work) and then everything above a certain likelihood percentage gets checked by a health professional. The final decision will never depend entirely on a computer.
Now, if the hospital stated specifically that they're using Gemini to make diagnoses, then by all means, run.
Just to say that AI is a great tool if you use it responsibly, which it already often is in many sectors. Generative AI is just one form of AI, a way to calculate the most statistically probable word to follow the previous word. But Artifical Intelligence as a concept is so much more than just the language models, and it's important that everyone remembers that when the scaremongering starts.
*Is it true, or did Google Gemini just make it up, or did somebody just make that up about Google Gemini?
*Well, who knows; your guess is as good as Google Gemini's
#AI#Gemini#This brought to you by the AI show we saw this weekend#Thank you Jeroen Baert#Didn't really learn anything new there but did drive home the point that many many people don't understand nearly enough about it

La Danza de los Condenados Tomo 1
Novela gráfica Guión y dibujos de Federico Baert Fondos: Marcos Vergara. Color: Caio Di Lorenzo
