Hey man, as a long time mutual, I wanted to ask- what did you specialize in as a grad student? I know your field is in Middle Eastern studies, but I would love to hear if there's any particular nation/time period/political scene you specialize in.

I wound up going to grad school myself (I'm entering my last year now, a 3-year program), and while I'm still studying game design, I also developed a focus on genocide studies and advocacy. I wouldn't call it a minor, but it has become a big part of my studies and professional expertise.

All the same, I would love to talk shop about what your grad school experience has been like! And hope you're doing well!

Hey! I'm good! I actually have two master's degrees now, one in Middle East studies and one in international relations. I should probably update my blog header, as it's pretty out of date.

I didnt have an official specialization, but I did write my thesis on Yemen. Specifically the riots in Aden in 1947. These were inspired by the announcement that the state of Israel would be formed, and involved mobs attacking Jewish residents/migrants. I actually argued that the causes were not some kind of ancient ethnic conflict, but based upon the economic and political realities of the time.

It at least tangentially relates to genocide studies, involving what was happening with Israel and also the disappearance of the Yemeni Jewish population from Yemen.

I'd be glad to chat though! Especially since you're about to finish up. The transition from grad school back to the real world can be a tricky one!

I saw a PA comic for the first time in maybe a decade and it was Tycho ranting that video game companies aren’t “pro-consumer” or whatever. It was like going back to your home town and seeing people who still have the jobs they had in high school.

Greetings to all on this fine morning, from the Facebook Live Killer and No More Cowbell capital of the US--Erie, PA. I don’t juxtapose these two events to trivialize murder or to elevate some random arena policy change. I just wanted to point to the absurdity of life, and to say to all the Erie haters out there that this shit happens everywhere. Everywhere.

I’ll continue to focus my fascination with Erie’s odd side. It’s just more interesting to me. I love my hometown and I want to see it survive and succeed. I’m not on a mission to highlight the worst parts, I want to explore what has been and to show what I’ve found. As one frequent commenter recently said, “Keep Erie Weird”. Right on!

I'm genuinely scared now about what's going to happen to unions. Is there any chance in hell that they'll ever bounce back from this shit and that the law will one day drastically reverse in their favor, even if it's not within our lifetime?

I guess there’s a chance a new court could overturn things in 60 or 70 years, so maybe “permanent” wasn’t an accurate word. SCOTUS decisions get overturned, just not quickly.
