Your heart condition had always made it so that you were in and out of the hospital since you were two. You had hated the stark white walls and bright lights on the ceiling since you were that young, not to mention the bed with pillows so big you could probably fit your small body entirely on them and still have room. It always made you feel fragile and small - always being trapped in your hospital room, unable to get out.
But at least the nurses were nice. They helped you take your medication, talked with you when you got bored, went on walks with you to the outside patio in the hospital, and even read bedtime stories to you to help you fall asleep. They were definitely closer friends to you than any of your school friends which you rarely got to see anymore.
You thought you would always be alone in your hospital room, until one day a boy was put in the empty bed on the other side of the room. You were ten at the time, and took the addition to be a personal offence at first. It was supposed to be your room. You never had to share before.
For the first two weeks, you didn’t speak a single word to the boy. You observed him in silence, judging whether he was a threat to the normalcy of your life or not. He had dark hair and catlike features. He also had a habit of singing when he thought you were asleep. Except you were rarely asleep, and instead heard his surprisingly beautiful voice softly letting out melodious notes.
One day at breakfast, you finally decided to talk to him.
“What’s your name?” You asked him, poking at your small stack of pancakes to see how fluffy they were.
“Gyehyeon. What’s yours?” He turned to you, small figure looking as fragile as yours as he sat up on his bed. Maybe you two were in the same boat.
“Y/n.” You took a bite that was mostly strawberry sauce than actual pancake.
“Why are you here?”
“Heart condition. You?”
“My growth is stunted.”
“Oh. Is that why you’re so small?”
He nodded, a small smile gracing his face. You thought he looked cute.
“How old are you?” You asked.
“Almost 12. But I’m the size of a 7 year old.” He pouted slightly, not touching his bowl of fruit.
“I’ll turn 11 next month…” You echoed, “I’m short too, so don’t feel bad about it… And the nurses here are really nice. I'm sure they’ll get you to grow up tall.” You encouraged, giving him a big smile.
“Is your heart condition serious?” He asked after some silence.
“My parents and the nurses say that I’ll be fine, but they always have conversations I can’t hear.” You explained.
“That usually means they’re hiding something from you and don’t want you to know how bad it really is.” Gyehyeon said sharply and you scoffed.
“What do you know about anything?!” You turned so you were facing away from the boy, his words cutting too deep. You didn’t like being told you were sick, as if you didn’t already know every time your heart acted up. You just wanted to be healthy.
“Sorry…” He mumbled, letting out a sigh and closing his eyes. A tear slipped down your cheek and the hollow beeping of your monitor was the only sound that filled the room.
//
“It’s your big day!” You cheered as a 17 year old Gyehyeon stepped out in his surgery gown. He had grown a lot over the years thanks to a strict diet and medication, and could now almost pass as the height of a short fifteen year old. You were proud of his progress. He looked stronger and healthier despite still being shorter than average.
“If I die, it was nice having you as my roommate.” He joked, masking his nerves.
“You won’t die. We’re pretty strong, you and I.”
He nodded, “I’m proud of us… I’ve grown almost 30 centimetres, you’ve been getting better. Hopefully we’ll both be out of here soon.”
Gyehyeon and you loved to talk about the future - how your lives would be like away from the hospital. You would both be normal healthy teenagers going to a real school and having real friends. It seemed like a dream, but one that was obtainable. Eventually.
Nurse Park came in soon. She was your favourite nurse, and both yours and Gyehyeon’s best friend.
“Look at you standing tall!” She said cheerily. She commented about Gyehyeon’s height every time she came in and it always left him embarrassed.
You reached out your hand, still sitting on your bed. Gyehyeon shuffled over silently and clasped your outstretched hand gently. Nurse Park shifted through Gyehyeon’s files in the cabinet on the side of the room, only adding to the tension and anxiety of the atmosphere.
Gyehyeon gave your hand a gentle squeeze as you laced your fingers with his. “You’re gonna be fine.” You whispered, bringing your intertwined hands up to your lips and kissing the back of his hand. He smiled.
“Once I get back from surgery, we’ll have our first proper kiss, remember?” He talked to you in a hushed voice so that Nurse Park wouldn’t overhear.
“I didn’t forget. You’ll have earned it by the time you're back in here.” You whispered back, hugging his short body closer to yours.
Over the years, playful frenemies had grown into true friendship, and that had grown into a proper crush. Now you were both sure that you really liked each other.
Nurse Park turned around and you let go of Gyehyeon. He waved to you hopefully as he followed Nurse Park out of the room. Now you just had to wait.
It was probably the hardest wait of your life. He was undergoing a surgery that was supposed to help fix his spinal cord so he could grow without it obstructing him. You knew it would go well. It wasn’t as big a procedure as some of the surgeries that you had gotten. But you still felt nervous for it because you could feel that he was nervous for it.
You spent your time listening to music and drawing little doodles of Gyehyeon as you waited for 10 hours to pass. Eventually, a nurse rolled a bed back into the room, and a knocked out Gyehyeon rested on it, looking peaceful and healthy.
You were relieved to have him back in your sight. Maybe it was because of his height that made you feel the need to watch over and protect him. Or maybe it was just because of how much he meant to you, but you always felt a little uneasy when anything big was happening to him and you weren’t there for it.
You thanked the nurse and she left the room after telling you that he should wake up within an hour, but would still be tired and under the effects of the anaesthesia. Once you were alone you walked over to his bed, making a small spot to sit at the bottom while you waited for him to wake up.
He stirred after forty minutes, slowly blinking his eyes open. You glanced up from your phone, smiling widely once you saw that he was awake again.
“You did it!” You said happily, prompting a smile from him.
“I can’t feel a thing.” He said drowsily but clearly very happy.
“You hopefully won’t remember me saying this because you’re still under anaesthesia, but… you’re really pretty. Even just after surgery you look so good, and it makes me blush.” You blurted out.
“Is that why your cheeks are pink? Cute…” He mumbled, eyes falling back closed.
You scooted closer to him, “I’ll let you sleep again… but don’t forget about our kiss later. I’ll be waiting.” You murmured to a half asleep Gyehyeon. He smiled again. You brushed your hands through his hair gently in a way that only lulled him to sleep faster.
You had to leave the room for your daily walk and checkups after that, and by the time you got back, Gyehyeon was awake again. The anaesthesia had worn off, and he was back to his happy and savage way of speaking to the nurses, cute grin on his face the entire time.
You were given your dinner and left alone again. As soon as you were, you raced back over to Gyehyeon’s bed and hopped on. He laughed at your eagerness, but you couldn’t care to hide it.
“I believe you earned yourself a present for surviving the surgery, oh great and mighty Gyehyeon.” You said dramatically, inching closer to him with each word.
“I wonder what this present could be?” He jested, grabbing your hands in his.
“I think it’s long overdue.”
“Definitely.” He concurred, his face only centimetres away from yours.
You smiled and closed your eyes, soon feeling Gyehyeon’s soft lips on yours in your first kiss. And it was amazing. He was amazing.
“I really like you.” He whispered when he pulled out.
“Me too.” You mumbled, kissing his nose quickly and making it dust slightly pink.
“I know… You said I was pretty after all.” He said slyly, and your face turned a darker shade of pink from embarrassment. “Oh, and by the way… You make me blush too.” He leaned in to kiss you again before you could freak out about him remembering your words from earlier.
He couldn’t think of anything better than this moment. It was perfect.

Badboy!Gyehyeon pt.2
pt.1
Warnings: mentions of violence and food
[a/n]: unrelated but the real struggle is only being able to focus at night but also not being able to stay up because you sleep early :”)
-
Back in class, you’re anxious. Confessing to Gyehyeon is on your mind, but you don’t know how or when you should do it. You’re not as cool as Gyehyeon; you can’t just confess naturally out of the blue.
“[y/n], what is an organic molecule?” the teacher asks, snapping you out of your daze.
Your face turns red, but luckily you read this in the textbook and know the answer.
“They usually have carbons linked together in chains, but there can be other elements in that chain, too,” you explain.
“Good. Glad to know you’re on top of things, but make sure you listen to my lessons too, okay?”
A few of your classmates snicker and you’re not able to notice what silences them.
Gyehyeon, somewhere behind you, shoots them all a glare and they quiet down.
You scribble something down in your notes.
I’ll just try to eat lunch with him and I’ll tell him then... you jot down.
-
When lunch time arrives, you push back in your chair and its legs scrape against the linoleum floor.
Standing up and walking rigidly towards Gyehyeon, who is surrounded by a few of his troublemaker friends, you clear your throat.
“Ha, look. It’s Gyehyeon’s lover,” one of Gyehyeon’s friends said, sticking his tongue out.
“Shut it before I shut your own mouth for you,” Gyehyeon says, glaring.
“What are you gonna do, kiss me?” the boy says, laughing.
“Yeah, with my fist,” Gyehyeon says.
They all shuffle away as his eyes seem to send arrows towards them. His glare is truly frightening.
His eyes immediately soften as he turns to you.
“Hey, [y/n]. Were you okay with the work I did for the project?” he asks, standing up.
“Yeah, um about that, I was wondering if you want to eat lunch with me so we can talk about,” you say, nervously.
He looks around, considering your question.
“Sure.”
After finding a place to eat that isn’t too busy, you start to talk.
“So I think we did really well on the project. I’ll be surprised if we get a bad grade,” you say, biting into your food.
“Yeah, I actually worked hard on a project for once,” Gyehyeon says, chucking.
“If you worked like this more often, your grades wouldn’t be so bad,” you advised.
“I know, but I just hate the whole memorization and regurgitation structure of school. Memorize it for a test and then forget it. It’s so annoying.”
“To each their own,” you hum.
I should do it now!
“About Friday evening-” you both say at the same time.
“You go first,” again, at the same time.
Laughter leaves both of your lips.
“Just go first,” Gyeheyeon says.
You take a deep breath.
“So about what you said on Friday... Gyehyeon I’ve really liked you for a long time. You probably don’t remember, but there was a time when I fell in the middle of a fight-”
“And I helped you pick up your stuff? I remember that,” Gyehyeon says, smiling briefly. “I treasure that memory a lot.”
He clears his throat and looks away.
“From that day, I started to like you... And I thought about what you said on Friday a lot, so if your heart really does pound when you’re around me, if you really know that you like me, I wouldn’t mind... dating you,” you say.
Your face is beet red, and Gyehyeon lifts up a hand to cup your right cheek.
“Honey, I’d love that. My heart has not stopped beating this fast for a while now, because I can’t seem to stop thinking about you,” Gyehyeon says, staring into your eyes.
You can’t help but laugh slightly.
“Why are you so cheesy? You act all tough but I can’t believe you’re this soft.”
“Me? Soft?” Gyehyeon says with wide eyes. “I don’t have to be soft all the time, honey.”
His finger lifts your chin up and his eyes move to your lips.
He’s not going to...? When you haven’t even been dating for more than five minutes?
His lips quickly press against yours, and they feel extremely warm, and soft.
He’s panting when he pulls away, and there’s a strange glint in his eyes. His smirk seems to say see? I’m not all that soft.
“Gyehyeon, even your kisses are soft,” you say, just to irk him.
He pushes you down onto the bench that you were sitting on side by side. Your back against the wood, he towers over you, pinning your arms to each side.
“Don’t make me kiss you again,” he says.
He does kiss you again, but it seems to be even softer than the first.
You tease him for it when he pulls away, and all he can do is sigh, laughing afterwards.

Every school has their own share of rowdy people who like to cause trouble and break the rules. You prefer to stay away from them. They’re usually right at the centre of drama, fights and all that is bad so you stay far away.
But there’s only so much you can do when you’ve somehow developed a crush on the most reckless of them all: Gyehyeon.
You can’t control your heart and your emotions, and when you’ve found a crush, that’s it. You’re doomed. There’s no getting out of it unless they break your heart, because your crushes are stubborn and firm.
It happened when you let your guard down and ended up walking through a hallway where a fight was in full swing. Your head was down, watching where you were placing your feet, and you didn’t pay any attention to the loud yelling that surrounded you. Your school was always loud, anyway.
Then you were thrown back.
You had accidentally bumped into someone but they, out of pure rage and fury, pushed you back so hard that you fell backwards, dropping all your books. Embarrassed, you quickly scrambled to gather them up so you could leave that mess of a place immediately.
You noticed a smooth hand that wasn’t yours reaching for one of your books. Looking up to match the hand with a face, your eyes landed on Gyehyeon.
Was he going to steal your book? Would he throw it at you? Whatever he was about to do, you were terrified. A string of apologies left your mouth as you sped up the process of gathering your books.
“Why are you apologizing?” he asked, a serious look on your face as he handed you the book that he had picked up. “All of these idiots should be saying sorry for pushing you to the ground,” he said, gesturing to the crowd behind him who were focused on some sort of fist-fight happening.
He got up and pushed his way through the crowd to the centre of the fight, and you quickly got up to find another way to class.
That was it.
That was all it took to send your heart into panic mode every time you’d see him.
Now, you have to hide your face every time he walks into class with his coat hanging off his shoulder because your face is already red from blushing. You pray that you’ll never get paired up with him for group projects because seeing him face to face up close will leave you a stuttering and nervous mess.
But the universe has wonderful ways of screwing people over.
At the beginning of your new term, one of your teachers is discussing a super important project.
“It won’t be due until the last week of class, but it’s important that you get started now, because it requires you to write weekly updates.”
Your friend, sitting beside you, nudges your right arm.
“If it’s a group project, let’s work on it together!” they say, flashing you a smile. You smile back, excited at the thought of being able to meet up with your friend every week with the project as an excuse.
“However,” your teacher says. “Because this is such an important project, it will be done in pairs.”
An exciting murmuring rings through the class, but it’s quickly silenced by your teacher.
“I will be choosing partners,” they say.
Sighs. Groans. Cries of despair sound from every side of the sunlit classroom.
“Shush. Now let me list out the names.”
You and your friends cross your fingers, hoping to be assigned as partners by some weird powers of the universe.
“[y/n] and Gyehyeon. I think since the two of you have differing personalities, you’ll have a lot to offer one another,” your teacher says.
You turn around and find Gyehyeon a couple rows behind you, but he doesn’t even bat an eye. You sigh.
“Hey, isn’t that whole ‘pairing the bad student with the good student’ thing overrated?” your friend complains.
“I guess not. Seems like teachers still like that whole approach,” you say, turning back to your desk.
At the end of class, your teacher allows everyone to talk to their partners and when you approach Gyehyeon, he has his legs crossed and doesn’t meet your eyes when you talk to him.
“So um, Gyehyeon, should we set a weekly time to meet for this project?” you ask.
“Sure, whatever. I’m free Friday evenings,” he says, writing something on the desk.
“Friday… Do you want to meet at a coffee shop or something?”
“Yeah, sounds good,” he says, getting up and leaving.
But… you hadn’t even decided on a time. With a sigh, you start to walk to your friend when you notice a chain of numbers written on Gyehyeon’s desk. “This is my number” is written above it, and assuming that’s what Gyehyeon must’ve been writing earlier, you add it to your contacts.
Is this Gyehyeon?
Yeah. [y/n]?
That’s right!
Can you be there on Friday at 6pm?
Sure.
-
Nervous but excited that you’ll be seeing your crush outside of class, you sit in the coffee shop, awaiting Gyehyeon’s arrival. The white tile floors and the wood walls ease your mind while the tall, green plants provide some colour to the simple atmosphere. The smell of coffee is strong and a blender is hard at work.
When you open up your notes on the wooden table to start working, A lightbulb hangs low from above, lighting your papers. Suddenly, a boy sits down on the seat in front of you. His face is swollen and in terrible condition.
“Gyehyeon, what happened?” you ask, concerned.
“It doesn’t matter,” he says, running his fingers through his hair. “So what’s this project about?”
You notice that Gyehyeon’s dark clothes are muddy, and people in the coffee shop are staring.
“I really think you should get cleaned up first,” you say, quietly.
He sighs and rolls his eyes but stands up to walk to the bathroom to the right. After a few minutes, he returns in his gym clothes from school.
“So Gyehyeon, this project…. Your cheek… it has a cut, it’s bleeding,” you say, not able to start explaining the project. Once again, the pretty but hard headed boy sighs, reaching for a napkin. You stop him though, and pull out a band-aid from your bag.
“I can’t wear that!” he starts, but you refuse. Since he washed his face in the bathroom already, you quickly apply the band-aid, your heart racing with how close Gyehyeon’s face is to you. His cheek feels soft under your fingers, but you quickly pull away, not wanting him to get mad.
Seeing a band-aid on his face makes him look cute, and you can’t help but laugh slightly.
“What?” he asks, coldly.
“I’m sorry, you just look… cute right now,” you say, quickly pulling out your notes and wiping the smirk off your face.
While your head is down, you don’t notice Gyehyeon’s small smile. Nor do you notice the slight blush that creeps up along his cheeks.
By the end of the first evening, you’ve surprisingly made some progress. The two of you have a plan for the project and are ready to get started next week. While your meeting with Gyehyeon was mostly him avoiding eye contact and answering your questions, you’re not so afraid of him anymore. He doesn’t make fun of you for being ‘too studious’  like some other people do, and you strangely feel comfortable around him.
-
Returning to school after the weekend, many stares are directed your way and people lower their voices when you pass through the hallway. Confused, you just ignore it until you reach your locker and your friend throws their arm around your shoulder.
“Hey, aren’t you noticing that people are being weird around you?” they say, gritting their teeth.
“Yeah, what’s going on?” you ask them, looking through your locker.
“Yeah um so Gyehyeon got into a fight after hearing some people talk about how you’re probably gonna do all the work for Gyehyeon on this project because you’re a perfectionist…”
“What? You mean… he…”
“He picked a fight with them because he got angry hearing them talk badly about you, so now,” your friend says, raising their voice to say, “everyone’s acting all weird and I don’t understand WHY THESE PEOPLE ARE WHISPERING!”
You hit their arm, worried that they’ll get in trouble for yelling. From the corner of your eye, you notice Gyehyeon walking towards you from the right with his hand in his pockets. Quickly you avert your gaze and act like you’re still looking through your locker.
“Hey, [y/n]. Ignore all these idiots, they’re not talking about you or anything. It’s me, it’s my fault so don’t worry,” he quickly says before walking off again, glaring at a group of people who were clearly making fun of you.
“What was that?” your friend says, laughing. “Is he looking out for you?”
“I have no clue what’s going on,” you say, closing your locker.
-
Gyehyeon manages to show up every Friday and helps out as much as he can with the project. Despite having a reputation of never getting his work done, he seems to be diligent with this project, which surprises you. However, he rarely talks to you in school, and even when you say hello to him in the hallways, he ignores you. Well, that’s what you think, but your friend tells you that he’s probably just too scared to say hi back. You think there’s no way that’s true. Him? Scared? No way.
Yet your crush for him somehow grows stronger. Seeing him sit across from you every Friday makes your heart burst. He looks so beautiful in every way possible, and hearing his voice when he responds to your questions just makes your heart flutter.
As the end of the term approaches and you enter the small coffee shop, expecting to wait for Gyehyeon for what may be one of your last meetings, you’re surprised to find him already there. His black turtleneck and leather jacket that he’s wearing over top actually look clean for once. His black jeans are ripped, but his black Converses are also strangely clean.
“You look nice today,” you say under your breath, not wanting him to hear.
“So do you,” he says, his ears turning red. “So, are we finishing up the project or what?”
“Almost,” you say, placing a hand on your notebook to open it.
Gyehyeon places his hand on top of yours.
You look up and he finally meets your eyes for once.
“Cause I don’t really want this to end,” he says, looking at you with a straight face.
Your heart races. What does he mean?
He suddenly retracts his hand and scratches the back of his neck.
“I’m sorry about that, I-”
“It’s okay,” you say, quickly opening your notebook so you can talk about the project and change the subject.
You hear Gyehyeon take a deep breath.
“Actually, [y/n], it’s not okay. Do you know how much people talk about you behind your back? Wow, only now did I notice… People are so stupid, they say things that aren’t even true…”
“What are you trying to say, Gyehyeon? People gossip about me? I know. This school sucks, everyone in it sucks. Can you please stop? Let’s just talk about the project-” you say, feeling hurt.
Gyehyeon’s mouth opens. “No, [y/n] I wasn’t trying to hurt you, I just mean… If you let me finish what I was saying, I’ve been shutting up these people for you and they keep telling me it’s none of my business, but maybe if we dated then they wouldn’t say that, right?” he presses his lips together after finishing his sentence.
Your face, which was burning with anger at the mention of gossip, is now red with embarrassment.
Gyehyeon? Date you?
“Can you stop speaking nonsense?” you mutter, flipping through your notebook for no reason.
Gyehyeon shuffles forward in his chair and lifts your chin up with one finger.
“Honey, I’m not speaking nonsense. If you let me date you, I can properly get these idiots to shut up,” he says, eyes sparkling under his red hair.
“First of all,” you say, your mouth dry. “I never asked you to ‘shut people up’ for me, so please don’t go around hurting anyone. Secondly, if you only want to date me as an excuse to fight people for my sake, then no. Thirdly, we have a project to work on.”
Gyehyeon sighs and rolls his eyes. Running his fingers through his damp hair, you assumed he showered before he came, he says, “I actually want to date you, okay? You don’t look down on me like half of the class, nor do you try to start fights with me like the other class. It genuinely angers me when people talk nonsense about you and I don’t really date because people call me a softie if I do, but I really want to date you, [y/n], only if you like me too. I think I like you, no I know, because my heart has never pounded this hard before around someone.”
He takes your hand off the table and places it on his chest. You can feel his heart beat.
“Gyehyeon… this is too much all at once,” you say. You desperately want to say yes. Your crush likes you! Of course you want to date him! But you’re so nervous!!
“It’s okay,” he says, holding your hand. “Take your time for now.” He nervously scratches the back of his neck before deciding to stand up.
“I need to go… I’ll finish the rest of my part at home. I’ll see you around.”
With that, you’re left alone with your thoughts. I’ll do it… I’ll confess to him properly, too. I’ll do it, you think. I’ll do it!
