Tabi-tabi po: why we warn the spirits to get out of the way
If you're ever with a Filipino friend and walking in a wooded area, you may hear him or her say at some points these words, "tabi-tabi po." Sometimes this is said when passing by a huge anthill, or when having to cut through vegetation for whatever reason. What does 'tabi-tabi po' mean, and why do Filipinos say it?
Literally translated, 'tabi-tabi po' means "please step out of the way". In traditional Filipino mythology, spirits roam as they will throughout their domains, which include forests, huge anthills (the homes of the nuno sa punso) and just about any other area that is still connected to nature. Yes, even the garden counts. We'll get into that later. Most people of course cannot see when spirits and entities are crossing their path, so it's simply polite and courteous to tell them that a human will be passing through their area or crossing their path. Hence this can be phrased politely and quickly in the phrase "tabi-tabi po". This is usually considered sufficient protection against any retribution from spirits who otherwise might be offended about being trod on or tripped up in their domain.
Other occasions when the phrase "tabi-tabi po" may also be used include digging up or clearing away ground for a new building, or even when tossing out hot water into one's backyard (as not all Filipino homes have drains). The latter is especially important, as there is a belief that spirits who have been scalded by having water poured on them may choose to exact retribution by making the offender or another household member have boils, pustules or any other skin infection.
Do Spirits Really Cause Harm When Offended?
The more scientific or logically oriented of folks would argue that ill effects caused by walking through the forests or accidentally offending spirits are a case of the logical fallacy post hoc ergo propter hoc. Simply put, a person may think that Event A that happened right before Event B is the cause of Event B, even if this is not the actual cause. In this case, a walk through the woods may be mistakenly thought of as the cause of a serious illness that manifested sometime after. This is especially true of chronic illnesses such as heart disease that could manifest as a sudden heart attack that is completely unrelated to a trip through the woods.
There are some cases when exposure to an allergen can cause itching, difficulties with breathing or other conditions that may be self-limiting, or in later days were managed with simple antihistamines. Once upon a time, the go-to remedy was a consult with a local healer who would figure out a way to appease any entities thought to be living in the area. To provide relief in some cases, coconut oil would be applied on affected skin areas. It is not clear whether this would have any actual curative effect, or if this merely soothed an obviously irritated and frightened patient.
In other cases, bacterial infections such as impetigo were attributed to the influence of a vengeful spirit. Folk cures to clear up affected skin such as herbal infusions for bathing or application of medicated oils are no longer commonly used in this era of antibiotics.
But Why Say Tabi-Tabi Po Anyway?
There are many reasons that Filipinos, even those living in urban areas, will still say "tabi-tabi po" when faced with an anthill, a large tree or a forest. There is still a lingering undercurrent of some reverence towards nature, and there is an even stronger fear of the unknown. Most Filipinos are not readily cognizant as to the causes of illnesses, and even fewer these days know enough of plants and herbology to avoid exposure to natural allergens. Saying this phrase provides some bit of reassurance and confidence, even if somewhat scientifically mistaken.
However there are still a good number of Filipinos who claim to have seen supernatural beings, such as the nunos, with their own waking eyes. For such people, they can never be too careful.

Well I’m back lol. I had an interesting and insane weekend.
It started Thursday. We had a monsoon type rain storm that took out two of our trees in the backyard so my mother and I went to push them into the woods. I was not dressed for the occasion and I got my punishment for that. Everything was fine until I got smacked in the face with leaves.
When we were in the kitchen a few hours later mom noticed a brown spot on my face. Thinking it was dirt, I wiped at it, and it did end up coming off, or so I thought. Went to my bf’s house and noticed the morning of our trip that it was bigger. We stupidly scraped at it and it didn’t go away this time. Kind of ignored it. It was itchy but that was all. We rode to Erie, PA for Formula Drift, a high powered car event that I really enjoy. Just about the only sport I really get into.
I slept for most of the ride down, we got there around 10am. When I woke up I was a lot itchier and the whole left side of my face was inflamed and red around that brown spot. I called my mom and asked what I should do since we were gonna be at the races all day. She said put hand sanitizer on it to cut the itching and to keep it clean and dry it out. (We learned that was a very bad idea the next day.) So we thought it was contained and enjoyed the first day of FD.
The next day I woke up and there was swelling near my eye, and the whole far left side of my face was swollen out. When something similar happened to my mom with poison oak she had to take steroids which ended up giving her Diabetes. I was terrified. So I went to the urgent care at 8am, was told all our home remedies were a terrible idea and was given a prescription for steroid pills and antibiotics and benadryl. The brown spot was a cut and I was told I had cellulitis, a bacterial infection. So I took it as soon as I had eaten at 10:15am. We then proceeded to go to the track for the second day of FD, not getting back to the hotel until 1am. I had packed my pills for the day, thankfully.
I got home last night at 10pm after spending Sunday in Jamestown, NY at the comedy museums there. I sobbed quietly to myself at the George Carlin exhibit, and I assume you all know I would. I’ll be using the pictures I took there as my “carlin quote” for a little while.
This morning I woke up and the poison oak/sumac/ivy that had been on my arm was incredibly itchy and white and puffy and I was in hysterics so my mother had to call in to my work for me. I thought I would have to go back to the Urgent Care. I took my meds, rubbed hydrocortisone cream on my arm and passed out. When I woke up at 1150am it was still puffy but not white anymore.
So now I sit here, itchy and sad. The weekend ended up being a shit show, but this is why there hasn’t been anything that’s been posted lol. I now have the time to sit and queue posts.
