Known as the Taj Mahal of Negros, The Ruins is located in the borders of Talisay and Bacolod City. The mansion was owned by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson for his first wife, Maria Braga, a Portuguese from Macau whom he met in his vacations in Hongkong. As the name of the place implied, this attraction is the remains of the mansion during World War II wherein the family intentionally burned so that the Japanese people won’t use it as their headquarters. It took them weeks to fully burn the house because it was made of hardwood. For many years, the remains of the mansion were just left abandoned in the midst of a sugarcane plantation. Until the owners decided to fix it and put a landscape around the ruins. Today, this attraction is a must-see attraction in the Island of Negros. The Ruins also has a restaurant which serves Mediterranean food and operates from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM HOW TO GET THERE: If you are in Bacolod for sure 99% of any hired vehicles knew where ruin is. If you are commuting, you can hire a tricycle, either at Bangga Pepsi or at Bangga Rose Lawns (Memorial Park) and tell the driver to take you to the Ruins. The place can now be accessed when you are coming from the Bacolod-Silay Airport. If you would want to just drop by the place before you go to the airport, you can simply instruct the taxi to pass by the place. Most likely a 30 minutes stay at the Ruins would be enough if you are running out of time. The RUINS is open from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Mondays through Sundays including holidays. The Balay Negrense, also known as the Victor Gaston Ancestral House, is an antiques museum in Silay City that showcases the lifestyle of a late 19th-century Negrense sugar baron. In the 1890s, Don Victor Fernandez Gaston, a sugar baron whose family revolutionized the sugar-planting techniques in Negros, commissioned the construction of Balay Negrense for himself and his twelve children. Today, Balay Negrense is one of the most popular and photogenic tourist spots in Silay – a city already so picturesque and dated in itself that it was declared a National Historical Landmark. Balay Negrense is a time capsule not only for the history, culture and traditions of the Gaston family, but the town of Silay in general. ADDRESS: Barangay III, Cinco de Noviembre Street, Silay City, Negros Occidental ENTRANCE FEE: Php 60 for adults HOW TO GET THERE: Silay City is a 30 to 45-minute ride away from Bacolod City. Take a bus, van or jeepney bound for Silay and ask to be dropped off at the public plaza. From there, turn left and walk straight along Zulueta Street. Balay Negrense is at the corner of Zulueta and Cinco de Noviembre Street.
