Day one.

The whole house is in an uproar. Where is Backup? Where did he go? Is he still on the grounds, or is Obelus right? Why did Backuo run away?

Piper sits in his windowsill, looking at the sky. The moon is peeking out. He wonders if Backup is looking, too.

Day two.

The commotion is still going around, people buzzing with excitement. Obelus attempted suicide. There's no trace of Backup. Any picture that existed was destroyed, along with any video evidence.

Piper sits on the floor by his window. He sees the moon again. Two minimally cloudy nights in a row.

Day seven.

The buzz has turned grim. People speculate that Backup ran off to die. Maybe he had enough. Maybe he's going to be a terrorist. Maybe he wants a new life. There's all sorts of discussion, but nobody really has a high opinion of him.

Piper stares at the rain splashing against his window. He bets on different drops winning. Is Backup in the rain somewhere?

Day thirty.

It's old news. Only a whisper of what has happened circulates. Obelus is drinking more than he used to. In a matter of months, the top three were reduced to nothing. Dead. Gone. Useless.

Piper studies at a desk. It's not his own. He broke into Backup's room again. There was no real evidence left behind. Backup didn't take anything unnecessary.

Only Piper noticed the recent take-up of crossword puzzles.

Day sixty.

Somebody intervened. Obelus is still drinking, but they've managed to get him back to how he was before Backup ran away. Maybe he's just numb to it now.

Piper dyes his hair black for the first time.

Day sixty one.

"Call me Umbral," he tells anyone who calls him Piper. They go along with it. Geniuses aren't immune to being scene or emo or whatever.

Umbral is used to doing stage makeup. For the first time, he simply does some eyeliner. He remembers Backup doing makeup sometimes.

Day one hundred and twenty.

Umbral has successfully gotten everyone to call him Umbral. Even the professors, even Roger-- yes, it matters. It sounds much nicer when the geezer scolds him.

Umbral got his hands on cosmetic contacts. His blue eyes are now covered in black. He carries eye drops on him now, because he refuses to take the contacts out unless he's going to sleep.

A year passes.

Puberty treats Umbral like laffy taffy. He shoots up in height to the point where growing pains make it difficult to keep active.

Thanks to Backup's training, he successfully avoids taking his medication every time. Many people think he's made a lot of progress. Umbral smiles and agrees.

Two years.

It's been two years since Backup disappeared. Umbral is starting to hear rumors circulate again. Some weirdo named Whisper is stirring the pot. It doesn't bother Umbral.

He's the age Backup was when he left. Umbral smiles at the moon. Backup is certainly alive. Umbral isn't sure if he loves or hates Backup, but one thing is certain…

He's obsessed. Umbral has his own collection of crosswords piling up in his room. He noticed, too, that Backup had a variety of manga. It's weird. Umbral didn't think Backup was too big on that kind of entertainment.

Three years.

Nobody talks about Backup anymore. Nobody talks about Piper. Obelus is becoming a professor.

Four years.

Hue is the new talk of the house. He's from New York. He's got tattoos and a hot accent.

Umbral feels drawn to him. The first time they meet, a brief encounter, Hue stares. Umbral stares back.

Backup is proud.
