It’s been a tough shift, one of the worst Judd has ever had and the only thing he wants to do is go home, take a shower and climb into bed. Unfortunately he can’t do that because you’re standing here in the locker room, talking at him because you were there at that last scene when he got in the face of the asshole who set his own house on fire. You were the one who stopped him from punching him out for almost killing his wife and kid.

“Look I really just don’t want to hear it right now.” He snaps as he raises to his feet from the bench he’s been sitting on. “Can you just shut up for five freaking minutes?”

The expression on your face, it’s as if he’s reached out and slapped you because Judd, he doesn’t get angry, not at you.

“OK.” You say holding your hands up and stepping back to give him space. “When you’re ready to talk about what’s really going on with you, you know where I am.”

“Reina,” He implores but you’re already walking away, slamming the door behind you and Judd he’s about to go after you but his phone’s chiming again and in that moment he’s torn because he knows whose on the other end, who’s calling him and that’s the whole reason he’s in this mess.

“Grace.” He says, picking up his phone as he pinches his brow. “Now’s not really a good time.”

On the nights you can’t be together, Judd sits underneath the tree outside the police precinct where you work with a takeout cup of coffee, waiting for you to take a break. His fingertips trace over the initials he carved into it a couple of months ago, when you first ended up working the nightshift. You’d been concerned about the toll it would take on your relationship because finding time together was already tough.

“You think that’s going to make me stop loving you?” He had asked as he drew you down into his lap and wrapped his arms around you.

You don’t speak and he knows why.

It has before…

The man before him left you because he didn’t understand the job was a calling, one you can’t help but follow.

“Honey, there is nothing in this world that is gonna change how I feel about you.” He’d promised you, his thumb tracing over the apple of your cheek. “You are the moon, the stars and the god damn world to me and ain’t nothing gonna change that.”

The first two weeks are brutal. Judd ends up covering a couple of shifts for a fire fighter on another shift that’s injured so you barely get to see each other. When he does get five minutes with you, he can tell you’re withdrawing. You’re quiet, distant. He can tell you’re waiting for the fall.

“Baby.” He murmurs as he sits beside you on that bench, his arm draped around your shoulders. “I want you to take a look at that tree right there.”

You tilt your head in the direction he’s indicating and that’s when you see it. The heart carved into the bark, both your initials residing inside.

“On the nights you’re missing me I want you to come out here and look at this tree.” He murmurs, his lips brushing over your temple.  “And know that no matter what happens it’s you and me forever baby. Night shift or no night shift.”
