On the nights you can’t be together, Judd sits underneath the tree outside the police precinct where you work with a takeout cup of coffee, waiting for you to take a break. His fingertips trace over the initials he carved into it a couple of months ago, when you first ended up working the nightshift. You’d been concerned about the toll it would take on your relationship because finding time together was already tough.

“You think that’s going to make me stop loving you?” He had asked as he drew you down into his lap and wrapped his arms around you.

You don’t speak and he knows why.

It has before…

The man before him left you because he didn’t understand the job was a calling, one you can’t help but follow.

“Honey, there is nothing in this world that is gonna change how I feel about you.” He’d promised you, his thumb tracing over the apple of your cheek. “You are the moon, the stars and the god damn world to me and ain’t nothing gonna change that.”

The first two weeks are brutal. Judd ends up covering a couple of shifts for a fire fighter on another shift that’s injured so you barely get to see each other. When he does get five minutes with you, he can tell you’re withdrawing. You’re quiet, distant. He can tell you’re waiting for the fall.

“Baby.” He murmurs as he sits beside you on that bench, his arm draped around your shoulders. “I want you to take a look at that tree right there.”

You tilt your head in the direction he’s indicating and that’s when you see it. The heart carved into the bark, both your initials residing inside.

“On the nights you’re missing me I want you to come out here and look at this tree.” He murmurs, his lips brushing over your temple.  “And know that no matter what happens it’s you and me forever baby. Night shift or no night shift.”

Judd can’t stop thinking about you, about the night the two of you have just spent together. He keeps envisioning how beautiful you looked when he undressed you, the blush that crept across your cheeks, your shyness. You’re a confident woman in every single aspect of your life but when it comes to this, you falter.

“Oh honey.” He’d whispered against your skin. “Those other boys haven’t been kind to you have they?”

He’s talking about the shrapnel scars that decorate your torso and thighs. He knows they come from an explosion, he has marks just like them etched into his back.

“No.” You’d said softly. “They haven’t.”

“They were just silly boys baby, they didn’t know how to treat a woman like you.” He’d whispered as he laid you down on his bed, his lips travelling lower. “I’m gonna make you forget about every single one of them.”

He’d spent the night fulfilling that promise, kissing every single one of those scars until you were soaking wet and keening for him. When he’d enters you, you’d made the sweetest damn noise and Judd had fallen in love with you right there and then.

When he wakes up, he’s alone in an empty bed and his heart, it feels heavy. There’s no note, no text, just an absence in his chest.

It’s as he sits in the kitchen, scrolling through his phone that he wonders if you regret what the two of you did, if you regret him. He’s surprised when the front door opens and you appear, carrying a white paper bag of something that smells mighty heavenly and two cups of take out coffee.

“Since you cooked dinner last night, I thought I would return the favour with breakfast tacos.” You say as you set them down on the counter in front of them.

Judd’s arm wraps around your waist, drawing you close. You smile down at him, your fingertips chasing along his jaw before you kiss his mouth. It’s filled with fervour, with passion and with a tenderness he’s never experienced before he met you.

“I guess that answers my question about how you’re feeling about what we did last night.” He says as your forehead comes to rest upon his.

“Best night of my life.” You tell him and Judd’s cheeks turn pink as he pulls you into his lap and murmurs.  

“The best night of mine too.”
