Live Alive...
So much to write, so little time...I'll try to keep it short and focused.
Life has changed a lot here in northern New South Wales recently, but first, lets talk about the music...
It's just over 5 weeks since I performed my first live show after a 13 month break. I was a little concerned I couldn't pull off a show in my usual fashion, however I think in the end, every one, including me, was satisfied.
It is true, it's just like riding a bike...
Once I stepped up on stage to do my job, which is to put on the best show I could, I felt comfortable. I really enjoyed the moment, and didn't feel nervous or anxiety.
I met the drummer only minutes before we jumped on stage, it reminded me of the first show with Eddy and the Backfires in mid 2008 in Bottrop. I met Eddy and then bam, on stage to play a show together... We continued to play together for another 5 years. Sometimes I watch the video (on youtube) and smile when I see Eddy's face light up from the get go, much like the singer 5 weeks ago. I was the right guy for the job, I knew what I was doing.
I've gotten used to that though, learning songs off a CD then playing without a band rehearsal, and usually it works well... One doesn't really learn the songs until they're played live anyhow, right? The groove and feeling is always little different once the energy of a live show kicks in.
I try to slip into the band's sound and style... Learning on the spot who to follow and figure out what's going to happen next. Sometimes that means I'm not fully concentrating on the crowd, and maybe even looking a little confused at the band, but it's the lead singer's job to work the crowd, my job is to support them in their work, and I can't do that if I'm trying to impress the girls in the front row instead of listening and watching the band.
There were quite a few restrictions in place in Australia in July, so festival attendee numbers were down. Only Queensland folks and a few New South Wales folks could join. Usually the much larger crowd is a mix from all over Australia. I did meet up with some old friends, and made a few new ones. Reminding me that not only do I love playing music, but I do enjoy the social aspect of being a musician, that is whenever my anxiety levels are manageable. It's also sweet that no matter how long I've been away, folks come and say hi, and we talk like no time has passed.
This show was meant to be the beginning of returning to regular live shows, the band are very interested in having me play with them in the future and gigs were (very) slowly coming in...
However, everything changed the next morning...
With the high of a fun show, I woke to my cousin offering me eggs and bacon for breaky, I said “hells yeah!”... I had decided I wanted to attend the festival that afternoon before driving home that evening, to catch up with more friends and see some of the bands I had only been hearing about while living in Europe.
The 10am news came on “South East Queensland Lockdown Begins at 4pm” ! Well there goes my plans for visiting the festival!! I had to freshen up, eat, pack up and head south and cross the border post haste. I didn't want to be stuck in QLD, or in traffic!
Some folks had tested positive near Brisbane, and the festival was in one of the areas of concern. The festival promoter had to cancel 1.5 days into a 3 day rockabilly weekender.
Once I crossed the border back into NSW I found out I had to isolate at home... Apparently they back dated the restrictions for returning residents.
Lucky us!
So, I had a week at home to isolate. I decided to get tested, it was a negative result. What else do you expect?
The situation at the time, wasn't too bad, but a pain in the butt. I had to isolate for a week or two, and then I'd be free in NSW to hang out.
Luckily our classes went online too... Another challenge to contend with... Online classes are a necessity these days, but it took a few weeks for me to get used to 'em... To settle into the new routine.
Anyhow, so there I am isolating at home... A week later, on Sunday evening, I am released from isolation as the QLD situation is under control and NSW ease their rules. Earlier than expected, winner winner chicken dinner!
But then... The very next day, Monday evening, the whole of NSW is thrown into lockdown because of Sydney's high case numbers and some regional cases coming to light.
It's 5 weeks after the show, and I have been in either home isolation or restrictions or code red type lockdowns (or whatever you want to call it) for 99.9% of the time...
Good times...
I'm not bagging the rules, I know they're there to help. It's OK, it is what it is... I can call friends and family, I can exercise and, I can play the guitar. What more could I ask for? - Probably a lot more, but I digress.
I have learnt to become adaptable... It's not uncommon for me to feel frustrated at change, but eventually I come around to it.
Now back to music...
The NSW lockdown does affect the band too, 2 band members live south of the border in NSW and 2 live north in QLD, which has few restrictions...
Can we even get together to play? Are shows being booked? If we play a show on either side of the border, do we have to self isolate afterwards? It's a bit like living in 2 seperate countries at the moment, each with its own rules.
Leading up to the show, I hadn't done any live streams, I hadn't worked on music production or songwriting, however I was looking forward to the show. I wasn't really thinking too much about about the future... I've been concentrating a lot on my studies (which is another blog for another day)...
A week after the show I was a little put off by the isolation and restrictions, however now I am starting to take small steps to get back into playing for myself. What I mean is, I have worked on some song production, song marketing, song writing and even looking into working with musicians to put my own band together!!
How cool is that? To me, that is very cool...
Now the small steps mean I have also been co-writing with a friend, starting to put more of my music online (like Bandcamp... coming soon!) and thinking how I can start over again... Cause that's what this is really about...
While I do have a band who hires me to play their music (which I enjoy and am grateful for, whenever we'll actually be able to play together) I really need to start on my own music career. That is a big step! So time to break it down into smaller steps...
When I first moved back home, I had a few offers to jam with old friends, and didn't take them up on it. I didn't feel like playing. Maybe it was a bit of depression, or something, but I just wasn't excited about it...There had been a lot happening in 2020, on top of leaving Europe and integrating back into Australian life, well, I guess it was a bit too much for me at the time.
In the past few weeks I've started contacting folks to get together, once the restrictions have eased, and I am really looking forward to swappin' riffs, ideas and jammin' with friends old and new!
It was a small thing, to say yes to that show in July... Really, it was just a word “yes”... but that decision has lit a fire... the spark is burning... and I don't quite know where it's going to take me, but even the pandemic blues hasn't gotten me down this month like it has done in the past...
Cause now I got something to work towards...
I wanna work with musicians, in person or online... I wanna write songs again... I wanna play a live show with others, their music or mine... I wanna release my solo album (eventually) and I wanna express myself as I once did with the 6 string in the past...
Are you comin' along for the ride??
Thanks for reading,
The Josh

After 9 weeks on the road we finally arrived in Barrack Point the last stay on our holiday, where we have set up camp for two weeks straight allowing us to see friends and family, after over eighteen months of COVID restrictions.
It was still raining in Merimbula when we left so the drive north was slow staying at the Big 4 in Batemans Bay for four nights. Should I say the very expensive Big 4 in Batemans Bay.
The place is well situated and has excellent facilities but operates more as a resort than a caravan park. Did the usual tourist things with a drive back down the highway to Bodalla, home of the community cheese factory. The variety is amazing but the chocolate peppercorn ice cream to die for. The “voted best pub in Bodalla” the “Bodalla Hotel” also has a great pumpkin soup. Also should mention it is the only hotel in Bodalla
Also visited the Catalonia Club in Batemans Bay where we both walked away winners. Hahah
Setting up everything is a pain but once finished well worth the effort. The park had screwed up our booking so we lost the site we booked back in 2019 but more than happy at our new site. A running creek with shaded areas and only one neighbour. Going to be hard over the next two weeks, NOT. Haha
This will be the end of this blog as from here we do a quick drive through to Brisbane via Balahdelah (free camp).
Thanks to those that have been following our journey and we hope we can catch up soon. COVID allowing.
Stay safe and well.

Nathan’s Old Fashioned Key Farming and Leveling Guide
HEY YOU! Yeah you!! Do you have TONS of alt characters sitting on your account just BEGGING to be leveled?! No? Okay how about keys? You like keys, yes? But you hate spending real-life money to buy them off the trade post, and we all know that Anet nerfed the level 10 story key farm a while back. So wyd?? Well, luckily for you, I’ve hand-crafted this guide that will surely be helpful for alt leveling and key farming as well! Click on the Read More to take a look~
So recently, we have been graciously gifted with a wonderful program called Augmented Tyria. But what is it? Simply put, its an external program that is “hooked” onto GW2, creating a real-time overlay with the game, allowing you to see the paths to take in-game for more efficient map completion. This guide utilizes this program and each and every one of the maps mentioned in it are guaranteed to have pre-programmed paths designed for them. You can get Augmented Tyria here (also I HIGHLY RECOMMEND looking at the README page for correct installation and other info you may need). There is also a useful video here describing and demonstrating how it works.
Alongside of AT, I have also prioritized these maps according to the amount of items needed for map complete. Most of us know how much of an absolute horrible pain Lornar’s Pass is to complete, which is why I’ve hand-picked maps of each level that have the least amount of POIs, WPs, and etc. items to discover or finish. This saves you time and puts more keys in your wallet, which further promotes a happier you! Let’s get started, shall we?
=== Skip this section if you’re only here for keys!! ===
All cultural cities are easily accessed via Asura gates within the Coriolis Plaza in the Eastern Ward area of Lion’s Arch. Unfortunately for these, they do not reward keys but only Transmutation Charges. Still, they should help get a head start on leveling. To prevent backtracking, I would highly recommend completing your character’s cultural city first before moving on with the others. For the AT paths, I will list the starting node waypoints next to the according map, as well as the codes so you can copy-paste them into the chat window for easy access.
Black Citadel - Ligacus Aquilo Waypoint [&BKkDAAA=] Rata Sum - Magustan Court Waypoint [&BBQEAAA=] The Grove - Upper Commons Waypoint (North at the portal) [&BLoEAAA=] Divinity’s Reach - Palace Waypoint (South at the portal) [&BCkDAAA=] Hoelbrak - Peeta's Waypoint [&BI8DAAA=] Lion’s Arch - Trader’s Forum Waypoint (Northwest at entrance) [&BBAEAAA=]
=== Now for the key giving maps!! ===
For the rest, it’s all a matter of how many previous maps you’ve decided to finish, plus any food/utility/booster items you’ve used to help with leveling up (which are all optional, of course). I’ve listed these in the same order, and you should technically be able to follow these and get to level 80 if completing them with no XP items. Again waypoints will be listed in the same format, though the starting points of the nodes will begin at the map entrance portals closest to the waypoints.
Level 1-15 Plains of Ashford - Smokestead Waypoint [&BIABAAA=] Caledon Forest - Astorea Waypoint [&BDQBAAA=] Wayfarer Foothills - Horncall Waypoint [&BHQBAAA=]
Level 15-25 Diessa Plateau - Charrgate Haven Waypoint [&BNkAAAA=] Kessex Hills - Sojourner’s Waypoint [&BAcAAAA=] Brisban Wildlands - Mrot Boru Waypoint [&BHUAAAA=]
Level 25-35 Gendarran Fields - Cornucopian Fields Waypoint [&BOMAAAA=]
Level 30-40 Fields of Ruin - Hawkgates Waypoint [&BNMAAAA=] (Can also easily access via Asura gate Southeast of Rurikton Waypoint in Divinity’s Reach [&BCsDAAA=])
Level 35-45 Harathi Hinterlands - Shieldbluff Waypoint [&BKYAAAA=]
Level 40-50 Blazeridge Steppes - The Last Whiskey Bar Waypoint [&BPkBAAA=]
Level 45-55 Bloodtide Coast - Archen Foreland Waypoint [&BKMBAAA=]
Level 50-60 Timberline Falls - Krongar Waypoint [&BFICAAA=]
Level 55-65 Sparkfly Fen - Braggi’s Stead Waypoint [&BMYBAAA=]
Level 60-70 Mount Maelstrom - Govoran Waypoint [&BMgCAAA=] Note: This has a lot of items to complete, so this map may be optional. If you need another map around this level, Fireheart Rise is another viable option, but does not have an AT route as of yet.
Level 70-75 Straits of Devastation - Bramble Pass Waypoint [&BOwCAAA=]
Level 75-80 Malchor’s Leap - Pagga’s Waypoint [&BKYCAAA=]
And then you should be at level 80! But also of course have a few keys in your pockets as well ;)
I really hope this guide helps you and others out there as well! If you have any questions or comments about this guide feel free to message me here and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Also, remember to share this guide to those who might need it. Good luck to you out there!

PAISLEY WITCHES
Bargarran House, home of Christian Shaw Source: Wikimedia Commons
The Paisley witches, also known as the Bargarran witches or the Renfrewshire witches, were tried in Paisley, Renfrewshire, central Scotland, in 1697. Eleven-year-old Christian Shaw, daughter of the Laird of Bargarran, complained of being tormented by some local witches; they included one of her family’s servants, Catherine Campbell, whom she had reported to her mother after witnessing her steal a drink of milk.
Seven people – Margaret Lang, John Lindsay, James Lindsay, John Reid, Catherine Campbell, Margaret Fulton, and Agnes Naismith – were found guilty of having bewitched Shaw and were condemned to death. One subsequently committed suicide by hanging himself in his prison cell, and it is believed that Naismith may have died while imprisoned. The other five were hanged and then burned on the Gallow Green in Paisley on 10 June 1697, the last mass execution for witchcraft in western Europe.
Agnes Naismith cursed everyone present at her trial, and their descendants, and for many years afterwards every tragedy in Paisley was blamed on her curse. Christian Shaw went on to become a successful businesswoman and manufacturer of thread.
Events
On 17 August 1696, 11-year-old Christian Shaw, the daughter of a local landowner, John Shaw of Bargarran, saw one of her family’s servants, Catherine Campbell, steal a drink of milk. Shaw reported the theft to her mother, whereupon Campbell cursed her, wishing that the Devil would “haul her soul through Hell”. Four days later Shaw encountered Agnes Naismith, an old woman reputed to be a witch. The following day, 22 August, Shaw became violently ill with fits, similar to the symptoms reported a few years earlier in the American Salem witch trials of 1693.[1] After eight weeks Shaw’s parents took her to see the eminent Glasgow physician Matthew Brisbane, who could find no cause for her symptoms. For eight days after her visit Shaw seemed to have recovered, but then “the fits returned with increased violence. She would become as stiff as a corpse and be senseless and motionless”.
Shaw’s parents took her back to Dr Brisbane, and by the time they arrived back in Glasgow she had begun to pull out of her mouth balls of hair she claimed had been put there by those who were afflicting her. Soon she began to pull other “trash” out of her mouth, including straw, coal, gravel, chicken feathers, and cinders. During her fits she was sometimes heard to be talking to the invisible Catherine Campbell, pleading for a return to their former friendship.
With Brisbane unable to provide any rational explanation for Shaw’s condition her family and their local parish minister concluded that she must be possessed and being tormented by witches, a common occurrence in England and Scotland and a central element in the Salem witch trials a few years earlier. The church set up a weekly fast and prayer meeting at Bargarron House, and Shaw’s father appealed to the authorities that those named by his daughter as tormenting her should be arrested. She had initially identified only Catherine Campbell and Agnes Naismith, but as time wore on she implicated others, and eventually 35 were accused. Ten were male and twenty female; the genders and identities of the remaining five are unknown
Investigation and trial
At the request of the Presbytery of Paisley the Scottish Privy Council set up a commission to investigate the case. Under the chairmanship of Lord Blantyre, the hearing opened on 5 February 1697. The commission’s task was to decide whether there was a prima facie case against those accused by Shaw before they were committed for trial.
Seven were subsequently summoned to appear before a second commission in Paisley: Margaret Lang, John Lindsay, James Lindsay, John Reid, Catherine Campbell, Margaret Fulton, and Agnes Naismith. They were charged with murder and tormenting a number of people, including Christian Shaw.[4] Their advocate, James Roberston, argued that the prosecution was obliged to rule out the possibility that the events surrounding the case could be explained by natural causes before a conviction could be safely secured. Matthew Brisbane gave evidence stating that he had been unable to find any such cause for Shaw’s condition. James Hutchison, the minister of Kilallan, about 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Paisley, delivered a sermon to the commission; it was commonplace at the time for a member of the clergy to preach to the court in Scottish witch trials, and they were not infrequently instrumental in securing convictions. Hutchison placed great store on the presence of witches’ marks on the bodies of the accused, and cast doubt on the natural explanations of those marks offered by some physicians: “And however doctors may say such and such things of it [a witches’ mark], we know not upon what ground. It may be that they have been budded and bribed to say such things”
The jury, confronted by a threat from the prosecutor that if they acquitted the defendants they would be “accessory to all the blasphemies, apostacies, murders, tortures, and seductions, etc., whereof those enemies of heaven and earth shall hereafter be guilty when they get out”, found all seven of the accused guilty
Executions
One of those convicted, James Reid committed suicide by hanging himself in his prison cell, using his handkerchief attached to a nail in the wall. The remaining six were hanged and then burned on the Gallow Green in Paisley on 10 June 1697, the last mass execution for witchcraft in western Europe. John and James Lindsay, brothers from Formakin Mill, near Houston, aged 11 and 14 respectively, held each other’s hands as they were hanged together. Catherine Campbell, after having been carried struggling and screaming to the gallows, “called down the wrath of God and the Devil on her accusers” before being despatched. Margaret Fulton appeared to have become insane, and “spoke cheerfully about visits to Elfland and the Abode of the Fairies on the backs of magical horses”. Margaret Lang admitted to consorting with the Devil, but said that she had renounced sin and was reconciled with God. Agnes Naismith laid a “dying woman’s curse”[7] on everyone present and their descendants; for many years afterwards every tragedy in the town was blamed on “the witches’ curse”
One account of the executions states that some of the condemned were still alive when their bodies were burned, and that the executioners borrowed a walking stick from an onlooker with which to push their victims’ moving limbs back into the fire; its owner refused to take it back after it had been in contact with witches.
Modern interpretations
The anxiety induced in Christian Shaw by Catherine Campbell’s curse may have brought on a conversion disorder in the young girl, the modern name for what was once known as hysteria. The term “conversion” derives from Sigmund Freud’s idea that anxiety can be converted into physical symptoms such as the seizures displayed by Shaw.
Michael Wasser has commented that witch trials tended to occur at times of crisis such as Scotland experienced during the late 1690s. The Glorious Revolution of 1688, although it had restored the “presbyterian polity of the kirk”, nevertheless left many “disappointed at the low moral tone and lack of religious enthusiasm of their compatriots”. The Glencoe Massacre of 1692 and the subsequent inquiry had “eroded the moral legitimacy of the government”, and a series of harvest failures from 1695 onwards led to a period of famine. There was also the threat of a French invasion: “as the Bargarron witches were being tried, taxes and troops were being levied in the west to repel the expected invaders”.
In 1839 a small hole was discovered in the wall of Shaw’s bedroom at Bargarron House, which by then had become a local attraction, through which an accomplice may have passed the items she supposedly removed from her mouth.
Aftermath
Shortly after the trial in 1697 the former Scottish Secretary of State James Johnstone observed that “the parliaments of France and other judicatories who are persuaded of the being of witches never try them now because of the experience they have had that it’s impossible to distinguish possession from nature in disorder”.
Shaw married the Reverend John Millar, the parish minister of Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, in 1719.He died two years later, after which Shaw went on to become a successful businesswoman. She was involved in the manufacture of thread, at first in a small way, but as the quality of her product began to be recognised, on an increasingly large scale. Her Bargarran trademark thread became a mark of quality, and others in the area began to emulate her techniques, starting an industry in which Paisley once dominated the world, and which shaped the town’s history. The last known record of Shaw is her marriage in February 1737 to William Livingstone, a prosperous Edinburgh businessman.
In May 2008 a memorial was built at Maxwellton Cross in Paisley, the site where the witches’ charred remains were buried. It replaced the original horseshoe marking the spot, which had disappeared during the 1970s, as had its replacement later.[The bronze tondo, with a stainless steel horseshoe embedded in it, includes the inscription “Pain Inflicted, Suffering Endured, Injustice Done” A campaign was launched in 2008 petitioning the Scottish Parliament to pardon all the 4000 men, women and children prosecuted under the 16th and 17th-century witchcraft laws, but legislators argued that it was inappropriate to pardon those tried and convicted under the laws of their time

Good body posture comes with a plethora of benefits. Improving your body posture and spreading your weight evenly throughout the body not only enables you to carry out any physical task effectively but also helps you avoid tension, fatigue, and stress on your muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Moreover, our body posture and alignment significantly impact our mental health. Whether you are an athlete or not, it is essential to maintain good posture in sports and everyday activities. Here lies the importance of Posture Therapy in Brisbane North, especially when you need to improve your body posture.
In this blog, we are going to discuss about five things you should follow for maintaining good posture.
1. Maintaining a good posture while standing, sitting, or lying down
Long-term bad posture can keep the spine and limbs out of alignment – leading to problems with the bones and muscles. As a result, you may suffer pain, ache, soreness, and stiffness in the body.
body posture is fundamental to various conditions and injuries. Hence, many professional therapists initially evaluate the body posture before they start physiotherapy or Pain Relief Massage in Brisbane North to treat specific conditions.
2. Simple exercises for correcting your posture
It is important to be mindful of how your body is aligned. Many people suffer from a common posture problem called upper cross syndrome. In this condition, the upper spine takes a rounded shape as it leans outward towards the upper back and shoulders.
Whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down, you need to follow certain steps to correct the lower cross syndrome. An experienced professional can guide you with recommended exercises for Posture Therapy in Brisbane North for your posture check.
3. Strengthening and stretching muscles for good posture
While stretching helps tighten tissues that have been in the same position for a long time, strengthening aids muscle contraction to make them stronger.
While exercising for good posture, it is essential to strengthen and stretch your muscles to make them more flexible. Both strengthening and stretching are dependent on each other. Without stretching, strengthening may lead to more tightness and pain in your muscles. With professional help, you can practice each of these forms of exercise effectively.
4. Frequent movement for maintaining good posture
Holding a posture for too long is never good for your health. Even if you have the best ergonomic sitting, you will eventually feel pain after sitting at your desk for 10 hours. Hence, it is recommended to change your posture every 15 minutes.
Pregnant women are also recommended to change their posture frequently to avoid health issues. Opting for the Pregnancy Massage in Brisbane North is an effective way to relieve muscle aches and joint pains.
5. Stronger muscles for good posture
When your muscles are weak, you are more prone to injuries and find it difficult to maintain proper posture. While doing strength exercises, you should focus on key areas, including your shoulders, core, hips, upper back, and legs. You may ask your therapist to schedule the exercise routine so that you don’t feel excessive muscle soreness.
Final Thought
Finding the right professional for Posture Therapy in Brisbane North can make your task easier to improve your posture. At SOL BODYWORKS, we have a team of professional therapists who can create personalised guidance with exercises and stretches for maintaining good posture.

How Koalas With an S.T.D. Could Help Humanity
When it comes to finding a vaccine for chlamydia, the world’s most common sexually transmitted infection, koalas may prove a key ally.

By Rachel E. Gross
July 13, 2020
The first sign is the smell: smoky, like a campfire, with a hint of urine. The second is the koala’s rear end: If it is damp and inflamed, with streaks of brown, you know the animal is in trouble. Jo, lying curled and unconscious on the examination table, had both.
Jo is a wild koala under the purview of Endeavour Veterinary Ecology, a wildlife consulting company that specializes in bringing sick koala populations back from the brink of disease. Vets noticed on their last two field visits that she was sporting “a suspect bum,” as the veterinarian Pip McKay put it. So they brought her and her 1-year-old joey into the main veterinary clinic, which sits in a remote forest clearing in Toorbul, north of Brisbane, for a full health check.
Ms. McKay already had an inkling of what the trouble might be. “Looking at her, she probably has chlamydia,” she said.
Humans don’t have a monopoly on sexually transmitted infections. Oysters get herpes, rabbits get syphilis, dolphins get genital warts. But chlamydia — a pared-down, single-celled bacterium that acts like a virus — has been especially successful, infecting everything from frogs to fish to parakeets. You might say chlamydia connects us all.
This shared susceptibility has led some scientists to argue that studying, and saving, koalas may be the key to developing a long-lasting cure for humans. “They’re out there, they’ve got chlamydia, and we can give them a vaccine, we can observe what the vaccine does under real conditions,” said Peter Timms, a microbiologist at the University of Sunshine Coast in Queensland. He has spent the past decade developing a chlamydia vaccine for koalas, and is now conducting trials on wild koalas, in the hopes that his formula will soon be ready for wider release. “We can do something in koalas you could never do in humans,” Dr. Timms said.
In koalas, chlamydia’s ravages are extreme, leading to severe inflammation, massive cysts and scarring of the reproductive tract. In the worst cases, animals are left yelping in pain when they urinate, and they develop the telltale smell. But the bacteria responsible is still remarkably similar to the human one, thanks to chlamydia’s tiny, highly conserved genome: It has just 900 active genes, far fewer than most infectious bacteria.
Because of these similarities, the vaccine trials that Endeavour and Dr. Timms are running may offer valuable clues for researchers across the globe who are developing a human vaccine.
A riddle, wrapped in a mystery
How bad is chlamydia in humans? Consider that around one in 10 sexually active teenagers in the United States is already infected, said Dr. Toni Darville, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina. Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, with 131 million new cases reported each year.
Antibiotics exist, but they are not enough to solve the problem, Dr. Darville said. That’s because chlamydia is a “stealth organism,” producing few symptoms and often going undetected for years.
“We can screen them all and treat them, but if you don’t get all their partners and all their buddies at the other high schools, you have a big spring break party and before you know it everybody’s infected again,” Dr. Darville said. “So they have this long-term chronic smoldering infection, and they don’t even know it. And then when they’re 28 and they’re like, ‘Oh, I’m ready to have a baby, everything’s a mess.’”
In 2019, Dr. Darville and her colleagues received a multiyear, $10.7 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to develop a vaccine. The ideal package would combine a chlamydia and gonorrhea vaccine with the HPV vaccine already given to most preteenagers. “If we could combine those three, you’d basically have a fertility anticancer vaccine,” she said.
Chlamydia’s stealth and ubiquity — the name means “cloak-like mantle” — owes to its two-stage life cycle. It starts out as an elementary body, a spore-like structure that sneaks into cells and hides from the body’s immune system. Once inside, it wraps itself in a membrane envelope, hijacks the host cell’s machinery and starts pumping out copies of itself. These copies either burst out of the cell or are released into the bloodstream to continue their journey.
“Chlamydia is pretty unique in that regard,” said Ken Beagley, a professor of immunology at Queensland University of Technology and a former colleague of Dr. Timms. “It’s evolved to survive incredibly well in a particular niche, it doesn’t kill its host and the damage it causes occurs over quite a long time.”
The bacterium can hang out in the genital tract for months or years, wreaking reproductive havoc. Scarring and chronic inflammation can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease. Evidence is mounting that chlamydia harms male fertility as well: Dr. Beagley has found that the bacteria damages sperm and could lead to birth abnormalities.
All of this — except the spring break parties — is true in both humans and koalas. Researchers who work with both species note that koala chlamydia looks strikingly similar to the human version. The main difference is severity: In koalas, the bacterium rapidly ascends the urogenital tract, and can jump from the reproductive organs to the bladder thanks to their anatomical proximity.
These parallels have led Dr. Timms to argue that koalas could serve as a “missing link” in the search for a human vaccine. “The koala is more than just a fancy animal model,” he said. “It actually is really useful for human studies.”
An ancient curse
No one knows how or when koalas first got chlamydia. But the curse is at least centuries old.
In 1798, European explorers reached the mountains of New South Wales and spied a creature that defied description: ear-tufted and spoon-nosed, it peered down stoically from the crooks of towering eucalyptus trees. They compared it to the wombat, the sloth and the monkey. They settled on “native bear” and gave it the genus name Phascolarctos (from the Greek for “leather pouch” and “bear”), spawning the misconception that the koala bear is, in fact, a bear.
“The graveness of the visage,” The Sydney Gazette wrote in 1803, “would seem to indicate a more than ordinary portion of animal sagacity.”
In the late 19th century, the Australian naturalist Ellis Troughton noted that the “quaint and lovable koala” was also particularly susceptible to disease. The animals suffered from an eye ailment similar to pink eye, which he blamed for waves of koala die-offs in the 1890s and 1900s. At the same time, the anatomist J.P. Hill found that koalas from Queensland and New South Wales often had ovaries and uteruses riddled with cysts. Many modern scientists now believe those koalas were probably afflicted with the same scourge: chlamydia.
Koalas today have even more to worry about. Dogs, careless drivers and, recently, rampant bushfires have driven their numbers down so far that conservation groups are calling for koalas to be listed as endangered. But chlamydia still reigns supreme: In parts of Queensland, the heart of the epidemic, the disease helped fuel an 80 percent decline over two decades.
The disease is also the one that most often sends koalas to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, the country’s busiest wildlife hospital, located 30 miles north of Endeavour. “The figures are 40 percent chlamydia, 30 percent cars, 10 percent dogs,” said Dr. Rosemary Booth, the hospital’s director. “And then the rest is an interesting assortment of what trouble you can get into when you have a small brain and your habitat’s been fragmented.”
Dr. Booth’s team treats “chlamydia koalas” with an amped-up regimen of the same antibiotics used on humans. “I get all of my chlamydia information from the C.D.C.,” she said, referring to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States, “because America is the great center for chlamydia.”
But the cure can be as deadly as the disease. Deep inside a koala’s intestines, an army of bacteria helps the animal subsist off eucalyptus, a plant toxic to every other animal. “These are the ultimate example of an animal that’s completely dependent on a population of bacteria,” Dr. Booth said. Antibiotics extinguish that crucial gut flora, leaving a koala unable to gain nutrients from its food.
In a 2019 trial led by Dr. Timms and Dr. Booth, one of five koalas treated with antibiotics later had to be euthanized “due to gastrointestinal complications, resulting in muscle wasting and dehydration.” The problem is so dire that vets give antibiotic-treated koalas “poo shakes” — fecal transplants, essentially — in the hopes of restoring their microbiota.
For the past decade, Dr. Timms has worked to perfect a vaccine. Rather than treat animals once they are already sick, a widespread vaccine would protect koalas from any future sexual encounter and from passing the infection from mother to newborn. His formula, developed with Dr. Beagley, appears to work well: Trials have shown that it is safe to use and takes effect within 60 days, and that animals show immune responses that span their entire reproductive lives. The next step is optimizing it for use in the field.
At Endeavour, the vets treating Jo got a surprise: Molecular tests showed she was chlamydia-free. That meant she could be recruited for the current trial, which is testing a combined vaccine against chlamydia and the koala retrovirus known as KoRV, a virus in the same family as H.I.V. that similarly knocks down the koala’s immune system and makes chlamydia more deadly.
Dr. Timms is hoping that this trial and another in New South Wales will be the “clincher” — the last step before the government rolls out mass vaccinations. If he is right, it could be good news for more than just koalas.
Of mice and marsupials
Dr. Timms began his career studying chlamydia in livestock before moving on to using mice as a model for a human vaccine. Cheap, plentiful and amenable to genetic manipulation, mice have long been the gold standard for studying reproductive disease.
But the mouse model comes with serious drawbacks. Most glaringly, mice exhibit a profoundly different immune response to chlamydia than ours, making the idea of testing a mouse for a human vaccine “completely flawed,” Dr. Timms said.
After a decade of doing mouse work, he reasoned that he could take the insights he had gleaned and apply them to an animal that was actually suffering and possible to cure: the koala. “We don’t need a vaccine for mice,” he said. With “koala work, as hard as that is, and as difficult as that is, the results you get are the ones that matter.”
The more Dr. Timms worked with koalas, the more he realized that these marsupials were not so different from you and me. Here was a species that, like us, was naturally infected with several strains of chlamydia and suffered from similar reproductive outcomes, including infertility. He realized he might have a useful model animal on his hands.
“You’re better off doing a bad experiment in koalas than a good experiment in mice,” Dr. Timms said. “Because koalas really do get chlamydia and they really do get reproductive tract disease, so everything you do is relevant.”
Outside Australia, many researchers say the idea of a koala model is clever but difficult to implement. Dr. Darville pointed out that it would be expensive and logistically impossible to test 30 different vaccines in koalas. (According to Endeavour, it costs roughly $2,000 to pluck one koala from its tree and give it a health exam.)
Still, Dr. Timms said, the challenge was worth attempting: “The reason that we’re making a case that in between mouse and humans you should put koalas — rather than guinea pigs, minipigs and monkeys — is that koalas address all of the weaknesses, to some degree, that the others have.”
Paola Massari, an immunologist at Tufts Medical School, is collaborating with Dr. Timms to test a different potential vaccine in koalas. “The koala represents a perfect clinical model, because it’s an animal for which you can do some experimentation that’s a little more than what you can do in humans,” she said. “And at the same time, if you get results, you are curing a disease (in koalas).”
An unlikely alliance
On a hot February afternoon, Dr. Booth strode out into the blaring sunlight of the Australia Zoo grounds. She was heading to the chlamydia wards, which in 2018 were officially named the John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward after a grant was donated on the comedian’s behalf. About 20 sick koalas were being treated with antibiotics that day, with dozens more on the road to recovery.
Dr. Booth stepped up to a leafy enclosure, where a fluffy gray female eyed her curiously from her perch. This koala was originally brought in for chlamydia but had since recovered; her reason for being here, listed on her cage, was “misadventure.”
“This is little Lorna, who’s rather interesting,” Dr. Booth said. “She has a baby in her pouch and she’s had problems with her glucose metabolism” — she had diabetes.
Wasn’t it unusual to have an animal that gets such humanlike diseases: diabetes, cancer and sexually transmitted infections? “We are but an animal,” Dr. Booth said, throwing her hands up in a gesture of unity with the world. “We didn’t think of it first.”
It is still uncertain to what extent the research on koala chlamydia will help in developing a human vaccine. (Dr. Darville had been working for nine months when Covid-19 hit, shuttering her lab and slowing scientific progress.) What is certain is that the research done on human chlamydia has greatly benefited koalas. From human antibiotics to mouse insights, wildlife veterinarians have far more tools than before to save the vulnerable marsupials.
For Dr. Booth, helping koalas is more than enough. “I don’t want to save humans,” she said. “My emphasis is completely the other way: I want to use human research to help save other animals. Because they don’t have a voice unless we speak for them.”

Why is happiness so difficult? 10 reasons, 10 solutions
Why is happiness so difficult? 10 reasons, 10 solutions
Most of us are happy with the error. This is because we grew up on the belief that life is supposed to make us feel comfortable. We have learned to avoid pain like plague, because negative events cause negative emotions, and negative emotions are not intended to feel. The result is that we feel pain and fail at the first signs of stress because the wheels of emotional training have never stopped.
Although there are roadblocks to happiness, the good news is that it is all in our control. Here is a look at thieves shared happiness and how to change them in order to feel better.
1. Fear
Fear of change is natural. Staying mired in misery, is not. Common causes include fear of the unknown, failure, what people might say, and risking our safety blanket in the name of safety and predictability.
Fear afflicts many clients of the treatment: staying in a self-fulfilling profession because “this is what my parents did to provide the family”, or sticking to unhappy relationships because it is “better than being alone”, and stalling in a creative project because “what would the naysayers say if they failed?
It takes courage to get out of your comfort zone, but your comfort zone is also a danger zone. One of the biggest remorse for death is to restore whatever. Topping the list is the fear of criticizing others. Get advice from the ex-wife:
"You won't have to worry too much about what other people think of you if you realize that they rarely do so." - Eleanor Roosevelt
2. The chase of self-esteem
“It has become self-evident in our culture that we need to be highly respected in order to be happy and healthy. But as research begins in clarification now, the need to positively assess ourselves comes at a heavy price. The main problem is that obtaining a high degree of self-esteem It requires a feeling of privacy and above the average. To be called an average is considered an insult in our culture. This need to feel the superior results in a social comparison process in which we constantly try to blow ourselves up and put others in their place. "- Dr. Christine Neve
The problem is that once our self-esteem collapses, as it is inevitably, we begin to absorb negative emotions and prepare for our feelings of anxiety, depression, and lack of merit.
What is an antidote?
Developing self-compassion.
Empathy for oneself means seeing ourselves realistically, as infallible as the next man or person. Feelings of complacency about self-compassion are very stable because they are based on our own subjective values.
Research has shown that compassion provides the same benefits as high self-esteem, such as reducing anxiety, depression, and high happiness. However, it is not associated with the negative effects of self-esteem such as social comparison, defense, or narcissism.
3. External rewards
Happiness is an inner work. Sure, a shiny new car, elegant fossils and a European vacation can make life better, but they are temporary fixes. Sometimes we move away from our minds in search of happiness so that these outward endeavors block our path. The best things in life are created and developed - good and close relationships, positive experiences and loving memories. Material goods will not overwhelm us with feelings of good sense and meaning.
4. "When you reach this goal ..."
Life does not respect the ideal time. Waiting for the future is to sit anxiously as the world passes. We postpone our happiness until a future time when everything is OK. Only this time never comes.
Some believed that happiness should be earned, and suffering now means that we can cash in our karmic sunlight tomorrow. The truth is that happiness is not mystical or destiny. Anxiety therapy agents often self-sabotage when things begin to search because they believe that if they take emotional wellness for granted, the Gods of Happiness will strike them. Protective Anxiety is a waste of time if there ever was.

As a child I have always looked forward to highlights: high school graduation, independent living, marriage, travel, parenting, etc. Then I woke up one day in my twenties and realized that I was living "the future". Despite the highlights, there have always been barriers. Once one of the challenges was overcome, the next challenge was knocking on my door. This realization has forced me to be a deficient reality, known as "here now". It's very easy to get involved in tomorrow's game. And every precious moment of the day passes by us.
5. Negative thoughts
The critical psychological lesson is learning that our thoughts shape our emotions, not the other way around. It is common to think that we cannot help our feelings, but this is simply not true. Negative thoughts can seem automatic as they become ingrained in our thinking process. The complexity of things is that many of our thoughts are unconscious.
One of the best ways to combat chronic negative thinking is to visit a therapist. A skilled therapist will help you uncover your unconscious thinking process so that these thoughts are brought into consciousness, examined and dealt with.
For example, you may have had many ideas when reading, "Visit a therapist." Perhaps you have had a negative counseling experience in the past, or your immediate idea was, "Here we go again, someone tells me I'm crazy, and I need to fix, or other thoughts that sparked a negative correlation. If you find yourself interacting with the same people and situations over and over again, it is Your subconscious thoughts will likely block your way.
The sister-to-be uncovered by unconscious thoughts is a treatment technique called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
The quality of our thoughts means everything to happiness.
6. Comparison
Have you ever shouted Instagram and thought, "Wow, if only my life is such and such, then I would be really happy"?
We have bombed by reminding us that our best breath is waiting in the wings. The thing is that we are seeing modified reality. Example: As I was writing this article I was motivated. So she went out and started taking pictures to post on social media. When I checked my self-consciousness, I had to admit I was more interested in reaching my followers' number, rather than providing value to my fans. Instead of feeling grateful that I was able to write for great websites like Huffington Post and Psychology Today, I was chasing more readers, more likes, more hearts and more posts. The comparison really is a thief of joy.
7. Live in the past
Few things are more sad than seeing someone stuck in an endless cycle of repeating their glory days. As the saying goes, "Young people get lost on youth." The thing in the past is that we will come back and change the miserable parts if we can. Regreting what you did or didn't do is useless because you were a different person at the time. Plus, we are constantly developing.
With the exception of John from high school who will happily present you a beer in exchange for listening to that time, he has had great success in the game in the last seconds of the fourth quarter. Or how his life was distorted because of that miserable wife who turned his children against him and took him to the cleaners during the divorce.
8. Loose borders
Healthy limits are the key to happiness. Without a plan of who we are, who we are, who we are and what we want in our lives, we cannot simply manage time and emotional energy.
For example, let's say you and your family traveled through the city to visit people for Sunday dinner. After sweets, the mother does not want you to leave, although your children are weird. When my mom pushes the boundaries that negatively affect your family, keep steadfast, but you love: “I appreciate the time I spent today, but as I mentioned earlier, sleep is at 8:00 pm. We have to go.”
My mom might see the border as a challenge, and an invitation to push your buttons. Hold your land and impose "second level" limits, if necessary. For example, leave without getting involved in any other conversation, turn off your mobile phone, and do not allow yourself to plead guilty to repeated pleas to make an exception because it is a "special occasion".
9. Neglecting gratitude
There is a wide range of reasons why we are grateful for daily practice - research has shown that feeling grateful has many positive effects such as improved health, better immune systems, feelings of communication, and higher levels of cooperation.
When we watch what we do not have, we waste our emotional energies. Focusing on our shortcomings, rather than our blessings, means overlooking the fact that most things in our lives are very good.
Try thinking about three things each day that you feel grateful for or keep gratitude notes. These cute little deeds only take minutes, but the difference in outlook and positive emotions can make a big difference.
10. Forget about the process
Sometimes we make life more difficult than necessary. Happiness is not a means to an end, because there is no happy face. We certainly experience happy moments and happy memories, but life revolves around the journey and enjoys the steps along the way. When we give up our limited view of happiness, we accept that life is full of distractions and flows where some days are wonderful, others are good, others are bad. that's good. The cultivation of happiness is as much a matter of treating adversity as it is about embracing beauty in the moments of everyday life.
