Nothing threatens the meaning of life like freedom: The Last Pomegranate Tree by Bachtyar Ali
Nothing threatens the meaning of life like freedom: The Last Pomegranate Tree by Bachtyar Ali, translated by Kareem Abdulrahman @archipelagobks #KurdishLit
On a plateau atop a mountain in Kurdistan, at the border of heaven and the realm of earthly reality stands a lone pomegranate tree. Known as “the last pomegranate tree in the world,” it is an enchanted and symbolic point of intersection for a handful of boys and the man whose life is bound to all of them although he will only meet one in person. His story—and, through him, their stories—recounted…

Quote
I have not come across a single human being who is so great a sinner, so guilty a spirit, that one might say, "Dear God, this is the type of man for whom you created Hell. He deserves no less." I am convinced that Hell is merely a metaphor, conceived with the sole purpose of underlining and understanding Heaven. Man is too pure a creature to deserve Hell.

2. Have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? If so, who?
Hermann Hesse! I discovered his work shortly after my first psych ward stay and going to a new school and his books offered so much comfort, they mean so much to me. One of the few authors of whom i can say I have read all his works. :p Bachtyar Ali, unfortunately only two of his books have been translated from Kurdish so far D: Then theres also Franz Kafka, though i dont identify as much with his works as i used to. And Douglas Adams and Michael Ende. Oh shit, almost forgot Rafik Schami!
8. What musical artists have you most felt connected to over your lifetime?
Simon and Garfunkel, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Klaus Hoffmann, Mike Oldfield, Mohsen Namjoo, Mashrou’ Leila, Yüzyüzeyken Konuşuruz, Nine Inch Nails
18. What’s your patronus?
Hoo boy, havent done that quiz thingie that came out a while back, but i’d be offended if it wasnt a cat :p

1. If someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
Star Trek TOS, The Elder Scrolls (especially Morrowind), Last Chance to See (Douglas Adams), Der Steppenwolf (Hermann Hesse), El sheita elli fat, Interstellar, Der letzte Granatapfel (Bachtyar Ali), The King of the Vagabonds (Colin Dann), Bilal (Fabrizio Gatti), Der glücklichste Mensch der Welt (Tahir Shah), Lawrence of Arabia, Avatar: The last Airbender, Le chat du Rabbin, Dishonored, Tales from the Borderlands
For music, see the previous ask!
2. Have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? If so, who?
Already answered in the previous ask!
5. Do you think of yourself as a human being or a human doing? Do you identify yourself by the things you do?
Im afraid I dont do much, though I wish I had the mental resilience to get actively involved in social issues. Most things I do are private and for my own benefit, so i guess I am a being.
28. On a scale from 1 to 10, how hard is it for someone to get under your skin?
Not to sound pretentious, but I guess a nine? My schizoid ass literally feels less emotions and with less intensity than the average person. People only get under my skin when they know me, and I tend to avoid that nowadays, unfortunately I’ve turned into the ‘If you dont talk to people they cant hurt you’ type, too many shitty experiences.
29. Three songs that you connect with right now.
Imm El Jacket by Mashrou’ Leila, My Silver Lining by First Aid Kit, Zolf Bar Bad by Mohsen Namjoo
Thank you! ♥
