I mean yeah, you could probably say the same of a lot of creation stories or otherwise nutrient-dense cultural foodstuffs. But that doesn't make this one bad! Also, frankly, I just enjoy a lot of the banger lines. Sure, they're given some of their gravity by their cultural posterity, the time-depth involved, and so on. But what a gravity! I won't dispute your point about messy editing, but, honestly, historicism is a bonus as far as I'm concerned. Pure gravy.

I am talking about Solomon as a (wonderful <3) literary character here. The same guy writing Ecclesiates and the Song of Songs is Good Literature.

Anyway, one of the things I like about the Song of Solomon is its unabashed, somewhat offputting, even sort of unsettling materiality. There are so many metaphors in there that it would never occur to me to draw, partly because of the gulf in cultural and material contexts, but partly because it's just fucking fun and creative and uses so many things that are profoundly unsexy to the cool-headed brain. It decides what's erotic in the way Jackie Chan decides what's a weapon, to butcher a phrase.

Something about it gets right into the gory wet possessive aspects of desire, the way it diverts the meanings of divers things into itself, relexifies the world. The beloved takes on this sort of Vertumnian quality, an assembly of commodities. It feels raw and transgressive despite its refinement and cultural status, partly because finding that there is so surprising.

Paul: One of the most prominent guys to love love and hate death an appropriate amount. I frankly disagree with his solution, but I have to admire the spirit. I think I've said before that Paul is basically the only Christian writer whose rhetoric increased my level of respect for Christianity. I should expand on Paul and Psalms, but I need to sleep.

Jonah, Job, and Ecclesiastes are the only Biblical books that are any good and deep down we all know this
