Absolutely Buried in my Love
After his recounting of his adventure (barring a few details here and there) to Pancake and Cinnamon, Butter decided to try and get some rest. Of course for him that meant sitting on his bed and writing down some of his thoughts in his super secret diary.  He watched as Pancake ran off holding Cinnamon in her hand. No doubt getting ready to play dress-up with her. It was Pancake’s favorite game in the world to play with Cinnamon and despite Cinnamon’s desperate screams of protest she sometimes also had fun too. Butter smiled, glad to see his sister and Cinnamon having fun. He opened to the next page in his diary and paused. “Hey Pancake?” He asked, “Do you have any red crayons I could borrow?”  Pancake paused her act of putting a fancy hat on Cinnamon’s head and pointed towards her art supplies. “Right over there!”  “Thanks!” Butter smiled. As he picked the red crayon in his hand his mood completely shifted. “This is exactly what that Hildibrand deserves.”
ffxiv write day 4: reticent with @windupnamazu 's Butter and also her's and @bobacupcake 's coco cocoda is here
takes place during the arr hildibrand quests butter is having some weird feelings and babycorn has a big secret she just HAS to tell someone ! anyone!
There had been something off about Babycorn for a while now and Butter was starting to feel like he was the only one to notice.
Though he felt that way, he wasn’t quite sure if it was true. If it had been the case he wouldn’t really blame anyone for not noticing. Especially since there were many strange things going on around them lately. Just a few hours ago they had been witness to the sight of a half-naked highlander descending from the sky and chasing after Hildibrand in a high speed chase.
After all that happened, most everyone there had to excuse themselves and walked off to take a breather just a few yalms away from the rest of the group.
It was something that was happening a lot late. This was the sixth time during this entire adventure that Lunya held her head in her hands and walked away. And also the eleventh time that Coco had said something along the lines of ‘Well that just happened!’
Meanwhile Babycorn hadn’t taken her eyes off of Hildibrand ever since they first met him as a zombie in the desert.
It had taken Butter almost less than a second to notice that Babycorn’s mood around the Inspector was almost the complete opposite of how she normally tended to act back home.
When they were given the task of going around to ask about information Butter was expecting Babycorn to let out a loud groan followed by asking if they really had to. Instead she happily smiled and nodded her head, skipping away with Cherrypit following behind her.
Butter found it really strange but found that nobody around him looked as confused as him.
Not about Babycorn anyway.
And it wasn’t like he was the only one to notice because he paid a lot of attention to everything Babycorn did or something. That would be ridiculous!
Even now, as they searched for what felt like forever in the cold wastelands of Coerthas for any sign of an elusive weapon, Babycorn kept pace right behind the inspector. Babycorn was holding her hands together and looking up at him with expectant eyes.
In complete contrast Hildibrand had her back to her, more focused on looking around at the boring snowy landscape than the cute lalafell behind him.
Without even meaning to, Butter frowned. Something about this was making him feel strange. “Would you just look at her already…!” He tried to whisper as quietly as he could to himself.  All Butter knew is that he wouldn’t ignore Babycorn like that.
How could someone could just not realize that Babycorn of all people was staring at you with her pretty green eyes was beyond him.
Again, it’s not like Butter paid that much attention to Babycorn or anything.
While Butter took a seat in the snow he heard the sounds of footsteps behind him. Despite having a clear view of Babycorn following Hildibrand around like a lost puppy in front of him, his heart still beat just a little faster when he imagined it was Babycorn walking up behind him.
He turned to see who it was, a smile on his face. Only to be met by the sight of Coco Cocoda instead. Not like Butter happy to see one of his friends but it made his smile disappear. “Hi!” Coco waved, “Lunya wanted me to check up on you! Are you doing okay?”
“I’m doing okay! Just taking a break!” Butter answered. He was just a little cold but other than that he was doing much better than he expected.
It made sense Lunya was probably worried about him. This was his first time doing something like this. Running headfirst into danger was something no one expected Butter to do, even if he had already proven he was proficient enough with a bow and arrow to do so.
Having answered Coco (and Lunya’s) question, Butter returned to looking sullen while staring at Babycorn. Coco let out an audible sound of confusion. It sounded sort of like, “???” If Butter said he was fine then why did he look so tired? Something else must have been going on.
Coco looked over to where Butter was looking towards. Maybe there was something over there that was making his mood drop? There was nothing over there besides Babycorn walking behind Hildibrand in the snow.
When Babycorn stopped to twirl one of her braids on her finger and let out a giggle, Butter instantly let out a groan. He had done it without meaning to or even noticing.
“Ooh!” That was it! “I think I know what’s going on!”
“Huh?” Butter looked up at Coco. Right now anything was better than seeing Babycorn giggling to herself, no matter how cute it was. “What do you mean?”
“You’re probably hungry!” Coco helpfully explained. He would have gladly taken out a bag of trail mix he had brought with him had he not been deathly afraid of Babycorn noticing his snack and tackling him to the ground to get it. “When we’re somewhere I can hide I’ll give you some of my snacks!”
“Oh…Kay?” Butter was pretty sure that he wasn’t hungry. He had eaten just a few hours ago with everyone. Whatever it was, he just hoped that they found whatever they were looking for and Babycorn could go back to acting like she usually did.
…Not that Butter paid attention or anything. Ahaha.
Butter was also sure that going ahead and flinging himself into a potentially deadly adventure away from his hometown where everyone knows everyone for the first time in his life just to make sure Babycorn got home safely meant absolutely nothing at all.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long before got his wish. In more ways than one.
The weapon was found and Babycorn did eventually go and stop following Hildibrand around. Mostly because the latter had been thrown into the air, landing feet up into the snowy ground.
“Inspector?! Are you okay?!” Babycorn was almost beside herself in worry. “Don’t worry I’ll help you!” Using her incredibly weak strength, she began to try and pull Hildibrand out of the snow by tugging on his legs. Despite the outcome, her intentions were so uncharacteristically caring of her that other people started to notice something off with her too.
Questions had to wait for another time however, since Gilgamesh had taken off towards the bridge with the weapon in his hands.
There was only one group of people that could stop him! And they were Inspectors Hildibrand’s pack of assistants!!
(name chosen by them last minute by babycorn corn herself no one else agreed to it)
Despite the possibility of this being Butter’s first big fight he wasn’t nervous. All he needed to do was protect Babycorn and also not die. Easy peasy. While everyone else ran ahead of him Butter found himself falling behind, stuck thinking about whether or not Hildibrand was in any danger of freezing up like a popsicle stuck in the snow like that.
When suddenly–he felt someone grab his arm.
“Woah?!” Butter was swept right off his feet and away from everyone else. “W-What’s going on?!” Was this Gilgamesh launching a surprise attack or something?! Had something gone wrong?! Who had even grabbed him?! And for what?!
He felt his back hit a wall. He was cornered. He was so so trapped.
Butter closed his eyes and waited for the inevitable.
“Hey! Butts!!” A familiar voice cried out his name.
In less than a second Butter eyes snapped wide open and he came face to face with the person standing right in front of him. Almost towering over him was Babycorn Corn herself. Butter knew she was taller than him already but something about this was making her look taller than she already was.
Babycorn’s hands were placed on the wall behind Butter, her arms blocking any means of escape that Butter had.
Of course if you asked Butter he would say that there would be no reason to escape. I mean what who said that?
“H-Hi…” Butter managed to squeak out. He couldn’t help but try and retreat, making himself as small as he could. “Can I h-help you with something?” Internally Butter couldn’t believe he had just said that. Surely there had to be something cooler he could have said?!
Babycorn looked down at him, narrowing her eyes. “I need to tell you something.” She began to slowly close the distance between them. “It’s really important...” Babycorn whispered, she leaned in towards one of his ears.
As Babycorn got closer and closer Butter felt his heart go into overdrive. Thousands of butterflies flew around his stomach. “Y-Y-Y-Y-Yeah????” You can tell me anything! That’s what Butter wanted to say but nothing was coming out.  His face grew warmer, the cold around him began to disappear.
Butter felt Babycorn’s hair brush up against his face. It felt like what Butter expected hay to have felt like when he was younger. Soft and safe. By now Babycorn was almost leaning against him and Butter’s face had turned completely red.
“I…” Babycorn began.
Butter held his breath.
“I love…”
Butter stopped breathing altogether.
Babycorn bounced herself off the wall and did a fancy little spin away from Butter, “I love Inspector Hildibrand Manderville!!!!” She yelled as loudly as she could. Several birds perched on the bridge took off at the sound of her voice. “He's just so smart and amazing!!! Did you see how he solved that mystery?! Yaay!!!” Babycorn continued to twirl in place, holding her cheeks in her hands in embarrassment.
“What.”
Butter fell down on the ground with a bewildered expression on his face. He finally took in another breath. Had he heard Babycorn right? Were those the exact words she had said?! Was Babycorn actually in love with HILDIBRAND?!
Babycorn giggled and grabbed her braids while swaying back and forth. “I didn’t wanna tell anyone just in case Hildibrand also heard! I mean obviously he also must like me–he just hasn’t told me yet! But in a little while we’re probably gonna get married right?! Cause that’s what you do!”
Butter was speechless.
“But I told you Butts since you’re one of my best besty friends!” She grabbed her staff and held it out towards the sky. “So now I’m gonna go beat Greg up and then Hildibrand will see how amazing I am and then we’ll get married and-! And-!” Babycorn wasn’t quite sure what came after that but she was excited. “Come on let’s go Butts!” She ran on ahead, giggling to herself the whole time.
It took a second but Butter was able to regain his composure. He wordlessly picked up his bow and arrow and took off after Babycorn. He was still bent on protecting her and making sure they both made it back home safe, no matter what.
Only difference now was that Butter didn’t quite care if Hildibrand froze to death inside the snow anymore.
Meanwhile Cherrypit, who had seen everything that had happened since the desert, was just really tired and confused.
