Back into city life
Thursday 28th September 2023
Here in Uganda’s capital city it’s almost impossible to guarantee that you will be able to make more than two meetings in one day if they are in different venues.
Plastic waste being collected for some sort of recycling.
Rush hour traffic peaks are office traffic and the school run, which follow on each other and blend into one gigantic jam. Mostly the peaks are dead slow and stop, often quite a lot of stop! Journey times are highly unpredictable
How do you get a pig to market?
This morning we allowed plenty of time to get in from Bushbaby Lodge to the city centre, where we had an appointment to meet our old friend James Mwesigwa at the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau. It took us two and three-quarter hours to travel about 18 miles.
Road side clothes shopping; did you spot the Barbie mention?
We had planned to drop off our katundu (our ‘stuff’) at the hotel beforehand, but as time marched slowly on, Ewan said, let’s just go to an early lunch and on to the meeting, which we did.
As always, James was very cordial; he worked as a social worker in UK in another life. We had to tell him about the closure of JF. He wondered if he should make a video of the work that JF has done in the last 10 years.
With James, who has always been supportive.
Our second assignment of the day was our important meeting with Dr Hafsa, who is the lead for mental health at the Ministry of Health. She has always been very supportive of us, and keenly interested in what we do. We need to be working within Ministry policy so we like to check that out.
Had she been able to come to open the CPD workshop, we would have broken the news of JF closing to her then.
She wasn’t able to do that, so today we did the deed.
To be honest, she was more shocked and upset than we expected at the news of our winding down the funds. She needed considerable reassurance that we are ‘only’ ending the money; relationships, friendships and support will continue. I was relieved when she gave me the customary very warm hug as we said goodbye.
some babies sleep anywhere.
We are staying in the Duomo hotel where we have stayed quite a few times before as we like it. Though the surroundings are getting a bit louder. I had a swim after a shower of rain.
During our visits we heard more about the challenges of running a PNFP hospital. You are dependent on getting enough money in to pay the salaries. In one place they are only now paying the August salaries. The take home pay of an enrolled nurse is around 300,000 shillings a month which is about £80. The government put salaries up for health staff and science teachers a couple of years ago so if the nurses and PCOs move to government they get a two or three fold pay rise immediately.

Discover the Magic of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: A Complete Guide
Uganda, often referred to as the "Pearl of Africa," is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and wildlife experiences on the continent. Among the many adventures Uganda offers, one stands out as truly extraordinary—gorilla trekking. For wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, gorilla trekking in Uganda offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This guide will take you through everything you need to know about planning your gorilla trek, including what to expect, how to prepare, and why this experience is worth every bit of effort.
Why Choose Uganda for Gorilla Trekking?
Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, making it one of the best destinations for gorilla treks. The most popular region for this experience is the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning over 128 square miles, this ancient rainforest is home to roughly 450 mountain gorillas, spread across several habituated gorilla families. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, another excellent trekking destination, is part of the Virunga Mountains, which stretch into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The magic of gorilla trekking in Uganda lies in its unique combination of adventure, conservation, and cultural immersion. By choosing Uganda, visitors support ongoing efforts to protect these endangered primates and contribute to local communities. With Valiant Safaris, a leading tour operator specializing in wildlife experiences, you can embark on a well-planned, unforgettable journey.
What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek in Uganda
A typical gorilla trek in Uganda begins early in the morning, with a briefing from park rangers at the trekking headquarters. The trek itself can take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family you're visiting. While it can be physically demanding due to the steep terrain, dense vegetation, and unpredictable weather, the experience of coming face-to-face with a gorilla family is immensely rewarding.
Trekkers are allowed to spend up to one hour observing the gorillas, during which you can watch them play, groom, and interact with one another. You might also witness silverbacks (adult male gorillas) exhibiting their commanding presence, juvenile gorillas curiously observing you, or mothers tenderly caring for their babies. The experience is truly intimate and humbling, giving visitors an unparalleled insight into the world of these majestic creatures.
Preparing for Your Gorilla Trek
While gorilla treks in Uganda are accessible to a wide range of travelers, proper preparation is essential. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:
Physical Fitness: Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding. It's advisable to do some basic physical preparation, such as walking or hiking, to build stamina.
What to Wear: Comfortable, breathable clothing is a must. Long-sleeved shirts and trousers will protect you from insects and thorny plants. Don’t forget sturdy hiking boots and waterproof gear, as the forest can be wet and muddy.
Packing Essentials: Besides the basics like sunscreen and insect repellent, it’s important to carry a good quality camera (with a zoom lens) to capture your once-in-a-lifetime moments. A walking stick, which is often provided, will also help you navigate the uneven terrain.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Uganda has two main trekking seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, from June to September and December to February, is generally the best time for Uganda gorilla trekking safaris, as trails are less muddy, and the weather is more favorable. However, some travelers prefer the wet season (March to May and October to November) when the forest is lush, and trekking permits are often more affordable.
Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safaris Permits
Gorilla trekking is a highly regulated activity to ensure the protection and conservation of endangered gorillas. A gorilla trekking permit is required, and the cost is approximately USD 700 per person for international visitors. This fee helps fund conservation efforts and supports local communities. It’s crucial to book your permit in advance, as they are limited to protect the gorilla families from overexposure to humans.
Other Nearby Attractions
While gorilla trekking in Uganda is the highlight of any safari, there are many other attractions worth exploring in the surrounding areas:
Queen Elizabeth National Park: Located just a few hours from Bwindi, this park offers diverse wildlife, including elephants, lions, hippos, and various bird species. The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions found in the Ishasha sector.
Lake Bunyonyi: After a gorilla trek, Lake Bunyonyi offers a serene escape with its scenic views, perfect for relaxing boat rides or visiting the small islands scattered across the lake.
Kisoro Town: Situated near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, this town is a cultural melting pot where you can experience the local Bakiga and Batwa communities. The Batwa, often called "pygmies," were the original forest inhabitants before it became a national park. A cultural tour offers insights into their rich traditions and history.
Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda: For those looking to expand their trekking adventures, this park, located just across the border, is home to more mountain gorilla families and offers opportunities for extended safaris.

Previous Chapter: Part 8
Meet the Parents Part 1
After one hour of looking, Alix finally found something to wear to family dinner. Being pregnant had made it difficult for Alix to feel comfortable in her clothes. She found herself frequenting the mall trying to shop for her new body. She had not been doing very well, especially as her body continue to change on a daily basis. The nerves she was dealing with today did not make it any better. Today was the day that T’Challa would be meeting her parents. She had only told them about the pregnancy a month ago, and had refused to say who the father was. Now here she should stood, five and a half months pregnant, having to introduce them to a prince who she hadn’t expected to see again as the father of her unborn child. Alix looked at herself one more time before the doorbell rang. She accepted her look for the night before opening the door to T’Challa. She invited him in before going to grab her bag and heels. As she came back to the door, T’Challa shamelessly took in her beauty causing Alix to ask what he was staring at.
“I was just admiring how beautiful you look Alix. Truly, pregnancy has added an additional glow to you.“ She looked away as she struggled to keep her smile hidden.
“It is just a sweater and some jeans. One of the few things that actually still fit”
“Well you wear it as though it was the best look at Paris Fashion Week” He finished with a smile. Alix finally let her smile come through before mumbling a simple thank you as they headed out the door. She had forgotten how the simplest compliments from him made her feel as though she was the most precious thing in the world.
As they got in the car, T’Challa made a point of asking if there was anything to know about her family before hand. T’Challa was usually very good with parents, so he was not worried.
“Nothing really, if you just be yourself they should be fine. My father can be a bit standoffish to begin, but once you get to know him, he is a really nice and funny person. “
T’Challa nodded taking in everything Alix was saying. He would do just that. He may not have been nervous about meeting her parents but he really wanted to leave a lasting impression, to not only show Alix’s parents he was serious about being in their child’s life, but to also show Alix how important her family’s approval meant to him if he wanted to be in her life again. He pulled into the driveway and waited for Alix to move before he opened his door. But she didn’t move, instead she stared at the front door while taking deep breaths. T’Challa finally asked,
“Is everything alright?”
“Yes. No. I don’t know okay. It is like two of my separate worlds are crashing into each other and I have no control of how fast or hard the collision is.” Everything was changing so quickly in Alix’s life, she was starting to feel like the side character in her own story.
“Well we can only take this a step at a time right?” Alix nodded at T’Challa “Why don’t we try and get those worlds to merge instead of crashing. Slowly but surely alright?” Alix took one final big breath before getting out of the car and walking to the door with T’Challa. They rang the doorbell, to be met with Jules on the other side of the door.
“Well if it isn’t the so called prince who knocked my big sister up” Alix covered her face already thinking about going home. T’Challa laughed softly before offering his hand to Jules.
“I would much rather go by my name, it is T’Challa. And you must be Jules. I have heard so much about you” Jules took T’Challa’s hand as he broke out into a smile.
“Of course you have, I know my sister can’t keep from bragging about me”
“Bragging is a bit far-fetched, don't you think? Jules are you going to let us in, it is cold” Jules opened the door for them to walk in. T’Challa looked at the house taking in the soft colours and family pictures as Alix led him to the kitchen where she was sure her mother was. T’Challa took in the aroma of food that caused his stomach to growl. Perhaps he had been a bit nervous seeing as he had forgotten to eat. Alix’s mother, Estelle turned away from her pot to greet them. He was sure he could see where Alix got her beauty from. Estelle’s smile was warm despite the apprehension in her eyes.
“Salut Maman, ca va?” She as she hugged her mother
“Oui ma belle, et tu?” Alix nodded before her mother’s eyes turned to the stranger in her kitchen.
“And you must be T’Challa, it is nice to finally meet you” Estelle extended her hand for T’Challa to shake.
“Yes I am, it's nice to finally meet you as well. It is also nice to see where Alix gets her beauty from” He said with a smile. Estelle softly laughed before responding.
“Oh please, don’t flatter me” Alix rolled her eyes at the two of them. “Well dinner is almost ready so why don’t the two you join your father in the sitting room and I will call you when everything is done” The pair shook their heads in agreement before going to meet Alix’s father in the living room. T’Challa took a large breath before they entered the sitting area to be met with the emotionless face of Tolu. Alix hugged her father whose eyes showed love when embraced by his daughter.
“Hello Papa, how is your day going?”
“It was okay Ọmọ Mi. You and baby are good?”
“Yes Papa.” Tolu eyes glanced quickly to T’Challa
“ Papa, this is T’Challa”
“I thought as much” After a moment, T’Challa offered his hand.
“Hello Mr. Ajayi is nice to finally meet you sir” Tolu took his hand and squeezed it before looking coldly into T’Challa’s eyes.
“Yes, it is good to put a face to the name. “ Tolu held the stare making T’Challa uncomfortable. Alix finally broke the uncomfortable silence as Jules entered the room.
“ Why don’t we all sit down and get to know each other better” Tolu retook his seat which allowed him direct eye contact with T’Challa. T’Challa’s hands began to sweat as tried to think of a conversation starter.
“Mr. Ajayi, Alix tells me you work in the Judicial sector of the French Government”
“Yes. That is where I thought that Bukola would be as well after switching to Political Science but she chose to work for the UN instead. Which in essence led her to you” Tolu’s expression didn’t change.
“That is one connection you made there Papa. I got a couple questions for T’Challa too. Like for one, you are a crowned prince, but you aren’t married or betrothed to some Wakandan royal or something?”
“Umm no... I mean I was betrothed but-”
“You were promised to another but was having relations with my daughter?” Tolu interrupted
“No! I meant I was betrothed after things ended in Uganda, but I called it off before coming to France looking for Alix.” T’Challa finished looking at Alix for support.
“ So you don’t have any other baby mamas” Alix through a pillow at Jules
“Jules what is wrong with you?”
“No it is fine, I do not have another...baby mama, no wives, no other significant others or loose ends”
“Mayowa is right to ask” Tolu spoke up “You did not even know Alix was pregnant, what is to say that this is not the case for another, or even this woman you were betrothed to?”
T’Challa cleared his throat before speaking “Well, my relationship with Alix is quite recent and I maintained a good relationship with the woman I was engaged to and she would have told me. And usually I am pretty careful”
“Just not with my daughter?”
“What? No! I mean yes. What I mean is”
“Papa it just happened okay, none of us were planning for things to be this way”
“Exactly the point I am making Bukola” Estelle entered the room sensing the tension
“I hope everyone is hungry, dinner is ready”
“Thank Bast” T’Challa whispered to himself. Jules laughed to himself watching the whirlwind that was family dinner.
T’Challa took a seat in between Alix and Estelle but could feel Tolu’s eyes on him from across the table. The night progressed and they ate in mostly silence until T’Challa finally spoke to compliment Estelle’s cooking.
“Mrs. Ajayi this meal taste just as good as it smelled” Estelle smiled warmly
“Thank you, and you can call me Estelle.” T’Challa’s heart felt warm. Hearing that made T’Challa feel better about this disastrous night. “So T’Challa does your mother cook or do you have someone who does that for you?”
“We do have help, but my mother did cook when I was growing up. She did not grow up in the palace like my father so she tried to incorporate aspects of her former life into mine and my sister’s life. She doesn’t as much anymore but she actually is the one who taught me.”
“That is very sweet of her”
“Yes it came in handy when I went to college abroad”
“Wait, you didn’t just bring help with you?” Jules asked.
“I chose to live the authentic student life the best I could. It helps you appreciate life more as well as help relate to people on a personal level. Plus no one knew I was a prince.”
“Must be nice to be able to choose poverty when you see fit”
“Tolu, be nice” Estelle scolded.
“No he is right, I do have privileges they do not, but I am aware of that and try my best to make positive impacts on the world”
“So would you say having a child out of wedlock and leaving the mother to fend for herself while just popping back in when you see fit is a positive impact?”
“Papa!” Alix was mortified with her eyes going from her father to T’Challa who looked completely flustered and embarrassed
“Papa that was scorching even I felt that one!”
“Julianus now is not the time” Estelle said exhaustingly.
“I didn’t know she was pregnant. If I had I -”
“Papa we ended things in Uganda and neither of us knew at the time. I didn’t even think I was going to see him again. Quite frankly, it was so much for me to take in and I don’t think I would have called T’Challa if he hadn’t showed up on my doorstep. Since he did, he has been nothing but supportive. He was the one who suggested meeting you guys. Meanwhile I was afraid, even when we were at the doorstep. So yes he should have been here in the beginning, and yes things in Uganda didn’t end well but I also hold blame. You cannot put all of it on him.”
Alix finished by grabbing T’Challa’s shoulder supportively. Tolu did not respond and dinner continued awkwardly in silence. T’Challa had lost his appetite as well as confidence. He was ready to go home.
“Well for what it's worth, I think you are cool T. I can call you T right?” Alix and Estelle shook their heads as T’Challa smiled a little and gave Jules the okay for the new nickname.
It was finally time to go and the pair couldn’t have been more ready to leave. Before going T’Challa had to promise Jules he would go to a Paris Saint-Germain game with him. Estelle came over to hug T’Challa goodbye. He felt warm and comforted himself by knowing he had won Estelle over. She placed a bowl in his hands.
“I heard from a little bird that cheesecake is your favourite dessert. We didn’t get to dessert but I didn’t want you to go home without having a taste of mine. Call me later and tell me what you think” She ended with a wink and a pat to his cheek. T’Challa smiled back.
The ride home was silent. Alix peaked over at T’Challa’s face as he drove. He looked sad and exhausted. She felt bad, he truly did not deserve to be bombarded like that. Alix reached over to caress his knee.
“I am really sorry about how everything played out. You didn’t deserve all that energy.” T’Challa looked down at Alix’s hand and seized the moment to put his over hers.
“Its okay, I understand where your father is coming from. He is just protective of you and doesn’t want to see you get hurt. It may take some time but I believe one day we will see eye to eye Bast willing”
“I like your positivity. It is admirable really. One step at a time right” T’Challa smiled and nodded “And my mom really likes you. She really wants you to like her cheesecake” they shared a laugh.
“If it is anything like her cooking I am already in love”
“I forgot how doe eyed cheesecake makes you”
“It doesn’t make me doe eyed. I just really love it.”
“More than you loved me”
“Who said I ever stopped loving you” Alix looked at his silhouette as it changed colours with the movement of the car and the streetlights. Her heartburn returned and she looked away to control herself. She cleared her throat and changed the subject.
“So, are you going to share the cake or?” T’Challa chuckled
“Absolutely not, I have seen what pregnancy has done to your appetite and I already know little to no sharing will be done. Plus I know your mother pack some for you as well”
“But the baby wants some of yours and she definitely gave you more” T’Challa groaned as Alix giggled
“Fine, but tell baby this is not going to be a pattern” As they got back to Alix’s apartment, her and T’Challa shared his cake on the couch laughing at each others silliness, picking up their normal rapport like they never missed a beat. It made T’Challa hopeful. Tonight might not have gone how T’Challa had planned but he was positive that his relationship with Alix was slowly returning to what it had been in Kampala. He held onto that hope knowing despite the obstacles Bast would guide him to happiness.

Requested by @toalmala. Hope this is what you were wanting!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Deboarding now.
I’m at the luggage carousel. See you soon!
It’s about 20 minutes later before Kensi catches a glimpse of her red headed friend whom she hasn’t seen in about 7 months now. She has to hold back a small gasp when her former coworker pulls her jacket away from her body revealing something that wasn’t there when she left.
Nell smiles and sees the clear shock written on her friends face. She had the same reaction too when she saw that tiny positive sign on the white stick. “Kens.”
The brunette shakes herself out of her trance and closes the distance between them wrapping her arms around Nell well as much as her protruding belly will allow. “I missed you.”
“I missed you, too.”
“Now I know why you wanted me to pick you up and not Eric.”
“Yeah. I just-I knew it would be awkward.”
“So you gonna tell me how...” The agent gestures her hand up and down the former analyst’s body. “this happened?”
“The way you Deeks were going at it everyday before I left, I’m pretty sure you know how-“ Dammit Nell stick your foot in your mouth why don’t you? “Oh, Kens, I’m so sorry.”
“What do you have to be sorry for? Do you have to be somewhere?”
“No, would you wanna get lunch or did you have plans?”
Kensi looks at her watch checking the time and calculates how much time she has to spare. “I don’t have to meet Deeks until 4 so I have time for lunch.”
“Great!” She sends her a smile excited that she’ll finally have time to catch up with one of her dearest friends even if it’s only for an hour or two.
XXXX
The waitress leaves with their order and Kensi can barely hold back any longer before she’s bursting at the seams with curiosity. “So?”
“So what?”
“Nell.”
“Okay, I’m pregnant.”
“No, I just thought you had a very large breakfast.”
Nell tries to bite back her smile but it’s pretty much impossible. “You know every time I talk to you you sound more and more like your husband.”
“Tell me something I don’t know.”
Knowing that she’s going to have to spill the beans sooner or later she’d rather Kensi be the first to know. “I met him in Uganda. He was a volunteer at the next camp over. We met when the leaders decided to combine the two camps and hit it off right away. One thing led to another and five months later here I am.”
Kensi beams at the happiness that is clearly radiating off her friend but then she freezes. “Wait, he didn’t dump you did he because if he did I will hunt him down and shoot him in the ass.”
The red head can’t help but laugh, she really did miss this woman. “Man I really missed you. And no he didn’t leave me, he had to stay back and get the next volunteers situated. He’ll be here next week. It’s just so weird. Having someone grow inside you.”
The brunette gives her a soft smile. “Yeah. I can imagine.”
Apparently all Nell can do today is stick her foot in her mouth. She’s known that her friends have been trying to have a baby for a long time now and Kensi struggles with it a great deal not that she lets anyone but Deeks see it but a woman knows and now here she is just flaunting it in front of her, rubbing it in her face. “Kensi.”
She moves the piece of fish around her plate with her fork afraid that if she looks up Nell will see right through her. “Hm?”
“Are you guys still...you know trying?”
“We’re trying but it’s no use.” Her eyes stay focused on her food as she wills herself not to let the tears that are springing in her eyes fall.
“Don’t say that.”
“It’s true.”
“Come on, where’s the stubborn Kensi Deeks formerly Blye that I once knew?”
The brunette shrugs as if she finally been defeated.
“Come on, Kensi, what’s up? Are you and Deeks okay?”
“I guess.”
“Okay, now you’re scaring me because I know you love that man more than anything else in the world and you’re acting weird and I never see him when we FaceTime.”
“There’s a reason for that.” She finally looks up meeting two hazel eyes with an unreadable expression on her face.
Nell’s eyes for wide with worry at where her mind immediately went. “Wait, you’re not...you two aren’t-“
Kensi brow furrows and then it dawns on her how her actions and demeanor could be perceived. “Oh, no. God no, Nell! Deeks and I are great, we’re more than great actually.”
“What do you mean more than great?”
“Well we haven’t had the chance to tell anyone else yet but seeing as though you’re in the same situation I’m sure my partner wouldn’t mind.”
“Wait, a damn minute.” Nell squints her eyes as if she’s trying to read her friend’s mind. The glowing skin, the loose fitting clothes, she and Deeks are more than great. Well I’ll be damn. “Kens, you’re pregnant aren’t you.”
“Maybe just a little.” A shy smile spreads to the agents face when she finally confirms her news.
“I’m so happy for you!! God, this is the best news ever! How far along are you?”
“Actually I’m five months as well.”
“Bitch.”
Kensi’s mid drink when she hears the word leave the red head’s lips making her choke back her water. “What?”
“Sorry, it’s just I look like I ate a basketball and you well you look gorgeous as usual.”
“Nell, don’t say that.”
“That you look gorgeous?”
“No, obviously I’m gorgeous, I mean look at me. But you look gorgeous too. You always do.”
“Wow, now you really do sound like Deeks. Big ego much?”
Kensi shrugs. Her face lighting up at the meet mention of his name. “What can I say when the man you love more than anything else in the world tells you that everyday you start to believe it.”
“Yeah, I know what you mean.”
