Cooking Crush Ep 9 Stray Thoughts

Last week, Prem and Dynamite were being moody about their romances, so Samsi took them back to his hometown to get a break and focus on their preparation for the food competition. Coincidentally, this is also where Ten ended up, and so Dynamite dragged Metha along so they could use Ten as cover. Prem and Ten were stressed about their separation and their lack of conflict, and fought about it via Ten's friends before reuniting and affirming they missed each other. Meanwhile, Ten has been learning from a young doctor who resembles his mom. We left at Ten having a breakdown after carrying her to the hospital.

I love that we called exactly what this show was doing based on all the cues it was giving, and it was exactly that Ten was back in that trauma and reliving it. I'm so glad Prem is here to help remind him that the world isn't that cruel, and also that he did well in getting Earn to help.

I love Prem and Ten. I am now a Babii.

It was such a good choice to have the two doctors training Ten be real with him after that, reminding him that doctors aren't gods and people will still die even if you try your best and make no mistakes.

I actually really like Ten explicitly asking for Prem to stay the night, and Prem saying no because he doesn't want to get too distracted right now. I like that he said he wants it, but wants to come back to it after the competition. So important that they ended with cuddling to affirm their closeness.

I'm with Samsi. They are a trio. I don't like them hiding something from him just because they have boyfriends.

I really like this conflict with Samsi. BL friends are usually overly supportive of the relationship and are never bothered by the changes in their friend dynamic. I like that Samsi is made for feeling like he doesn't belong and being made to feel like a fifth wheel in his friend trio. Two bottoms do not make an outfit, but three is a sisterhood; and Prem and Dy forgot that. There is so much to love in this episode.

Regarding Dynamite: This is exactly what I expected of him. You don't meet fem guys like him if they are loved and supported. You get this when they have to be. Dynamite has to support himself. We know he is a prodigy, so he's probably riding a scholarship to stay in school right now because he can't go home. I had been wondering for weeks why he didn't call his parents when he needed housing, and this is the obvious answer. It also explains why Samsi took him in even though he doesn't like people in his house. Because when you're gay, you take care of your own. I wish we focused more on the queerness of Dynamite in the posts that we pass around.

Babii v Polca

I want to first start this off by prefacing: I’m a babii first, Tay fan second. So, clearly I have a bias. Take what I say with a grain of salt. But the Babii 24/7 concert blew the Polca Time Traveling concert out of the water.

Stats at a glance. OffGun’s concert lasted 2.5 hours and their group performed 22 songs. TayNew’s lasted a little past 3 hours and they did 25. OffGun had 13 songs they performed together (just them), and each had a solo song. TayNew had 12 songs they performed together (just them), and also each had a solo song. OffGun had 9 different outfits, TayNew had 7. OffGun had 8 guests: Neo, Aungpao, Fourth, and the five members of Lykn. TayNew had 7: Gemini, Ford, Mook, Sing, Janhae, Junior, and Mark. Neither concert’s tickets sold out at the venue, but I want to say OffGun had about 20ish tickets left, and TayNew had 12. They both sold out of their plushie keychain at the venue.

Now onto my analysis. These concerts can easily be broken into three different moments. It’s usually a song, or a transitional phase with music or a fun video clip, followed by chatter to allow for change in set designs and costumes. After watching TayNew’s concert, I am almost positive they had more chatter than OffGun’s. I went back through my recordings of both concerts and these are my findings.

When I timed “chatter” I specifically only counted moments when there was no music. I did not include the fan videos at the end of their shows within that time, but I did count the talking to the audience afterwards. I usually don’t mind chatter but when subtitles are so delayed or inaccurate during a live performance, I tend to lose interest. So for me personally, it can affect how I view the concert flow. 

OffGun had about ~52 minutes of chatter. Of that, there was ~12 minutes dedicated to their OffGun Fun Night segment. Which, if you understand the premise of their show…that’s the whole point. They host a talk show. There’s supposed to be chatter. But to try and be more fair, I did include those 12 minutes in my total time.

TayNew had ~68 minutes of chatter. The difference between their chatter and that of OffGun’s seemed significantly noticeable to me. Perhaps it was because most of the chatter involved was on a blank stage with a wide cast. TayNew got lost in the group for me at times. Whereas OffGun’s longest chatter segment (the OGFN part) was hosted on a bed with Fourth. So it made it more fun and interesting for me.

Which, the bed. This brings me to another point. I feel like OffGun had more time to come up with the concept of their show. They utilized props more. The idea of a convenience store for the 24/7 theme was brilliant. Their hosting of a “ribbon cutting” scene in front of their store to begin their concert was perfect. Then having a shelf with products they could flirt against was a nice touch. I’m trying to remember what outside props TayNew had and can only come up with the Polcasan robot thing, a few chairs, and a picnic bench. It seemed like OffGun gave more consideration to their theme and stuck with it. There were even three songs within their set list that had 24/7 in their lyrics, further bringing up the concert's title.

So, all in all, I’m giving this one to OffGun guys. The concert flow was tight, the songs coincided with their theme, their outfits were above and beyond, props too. I also loved that for their closing song they jumped down from the stage and walked through the audience to sing. To me this added another personal touch and really showed how much they love and appreciate babiis. 

Yes, I’m biased. But there’s a reason for it. I think OffGun are creative geniuses and their concert proved that. 

Will I rewatch TayNew’s concert? No. 

Will I rewatch OffGun’s? Honey, it’s been seven days and I’ve seen it three times already. We already know the answer there.

I don't know why I did this account and why am I writing these letters to you.

Maybe because I can't talk with you anymore and say things that I wanted to tell you.

I just wanted to write my thoughts and feelings I had, I have and am experiencing right now.

Yes, it has been 35 months since we last talked. Not talk actually since you didn't want to talk with me in person. You didn't want to meet me that time. We just ended things with a chat "I don't want to talk with you yet, not now". But you haven't talked with me for 35 months and counting.

I do know you very well since we've known each other for 14 years. I didn't even realize that I've known you for a long time. I do know that you won't ever talk to me again and you won't even attempt to have a clear closure between us. We've known each other for a long time and we've been in a relationship that I thought would last forever, but you haven't even had the courage to face me and talk with me in person to clear things out or even just to talk with me at least respect what we had. Our friendship, our relationship, our love that we had.

I want to be angry with you but I just can't. I wanted to chat with you, call you, text you or even go to you so we could talk. But after showing me how you don't want to talk with me and face me personally discouraged me to do it. I just wanted to respect your decision of leaving me, leaving "us" that way. But I was hoping that you would try to reach me out or even just show your concern when I was in danger. But you never did. You never even ask me if I was okay. Maybe because you didn't care for me and I don't even cross your mind.

I was always thinking about you that time. I'm even praying that you would be fine. I also prayed that God will heal you since we broke up. But I think I was the one who needed those prayers. Since I think I am not totally healed yet from our breakup.

Yes, it has been 35 months and I'm still here writing these things to you. Still here thinking of the things we had. Still here thinking of how we loved each other. Still here reading our previous conversations. Still here looking at our exchanged emails and shared photos and albums. Still here dreaming of you at night. Still here questioning why you did that?

I still don't understand why you just stopped talking with me all of the sudden. Why didn't you reply to my messages that night? Why didn't you message me for days and even in our monthsary? Why do you leave me that way? You didn't answer those questions and just cursed that you are tired of me and those arguments that we had. Did you really love me? Or I just fooled myself that you did? If you love me why did you let go easily? Why did you let go of something we've built and we've fought for for 6 years?

I just hope that one day we will pass each other even though it didn't happen in the last 35 months.

Have you guys found OffGun very strange lately? Starting on March 19, in a fan call, when OffGun was asked about the relationship between the two, Off answered: We can hold a press conference here right now. On April 12, when everyone and fans believed that Off was joking, Off retweeted a tweet from Babii Philippines that contained the hashtag #OFFiciallywithGun, which was created on March 19, about them going public. Then there's the Safe house, it's easy to see how sweet they were. In particular, Off is also Gun's best bro, he takes good care of Gun. Some sweet things include Off asking Neo to come along and calling Gun cute, Gun getting angry and saying "Ai Papii" when Off chose him to go swimming with him. I can't forget some of the sneak peeking out because they forgot to turn off the mic, the two of them went to the toilet and kissed each other on the cheek. So in the podcast you shared that you are a recent Babii. You said something like you weren't always Off's biggest fan or something to that effect. My question is - What took you so long? What was it about him that you didn't enjoy?

Love the podcast btw, am listening to the latest one now and it reminded me that I had this question. Thanks for the podcast and hopefully the answer to this question.

I don't want to be harsh about the state of BGP in 2016-2018, but Off was not good at it at the time. It was easy to misread his uncomfortable approach to fan service and how that bled into the antagonistic dynamics they set up for him and Gun in their shows. They lean on Off's ability to play a jerk in a way that doesn't show up his ability to play to comedy and sweet.

They're doing better at using him now, and he's grown more comfortable with his public persona.
