Part 6 - Truth's Whisper

Shadow Milk Cookie grinned as he saw the shape of the Soul Jam forming on Vanilla's chest. He had a feeling that there was something special about this little flower, and he smugly continued to watch the action silently.

On the desk by the bed, the Light of Truth appeared in a ball of gold. Intrigued, the Beast floated closer to look at it. Instead of it being blue... This Light of Truth clone was gold with a vibrant, shimmery blue continuously swirling inside. It was encrusted by emerald shards pointing in all directions like a compass.

Shadow Milk raised an eyebrow at the new appearance. It looked very different from his own and Saint Vanilla's. Glancing back at the sleeping huntress, the jester narrowed his eyes slightly at the new mark on her chest.

"Nilla~... You're starting to interest me even more~..."

He giggled quietly before he floated back near Crepe and kept watch over the two of them, excited for the morning to come.

...........○○○○○○○In the morning○○○○○○...........

Flower yawned as she sat up in her head, her icing hair messy with a severe case of bedhead. She glanced over to Crepe, who was holding her prosthetic hand in their sleep. Sighing quietly but not wanting to wake them up, Vanilla reached over to grab her mirror, but felt something else on the table.

She glanced over and her eyes widened slightly at the new Soul Jam that shined in the sunlight. It took her a moment before she brought it up closer to her face and inspected it. A faint giggling caught her attention, and she closed her eyes.

"I'm too tired to rip you to shreds, so just do the both of us a favor; come out and show yourself."

The giggling stopped, and Flower was suddenly met with a new face, which was upside down. Shadow Milk blinked, while Flower Tea merely stared back with a blank yet confused look.

"Wait. So you can... see me now?"

"Yes. You're... Shadow Milk Cookie, correct?"

The Beast smiled smugly and dramatically spread out his arms wide. "The one, the only, the perfect, the Master of Deceit! Shadow Milk Cookie~!" He laughed while floating in the air, Flower staring some more before looking down at the clone of the Soul Jam in her hand.

"Do you know anything about this?"

Shadow Milk stared at it, a slightly confused glare on his face. "Wish I did. You're the first one I've seen since Vanilly to have my Soul Jam as well. And it makes me sick." He leaned in to Flower's face, a deadly snarl as the eyes in his hair opened wide, the pupils sharpening.

"You're lucky that I'm not at full power, or else I would've made you my puppet. How dare you steal what's rightfully mine, you little brat? Be grateful I can't string you up right- GAGH!!"

Flower's hand had grabbed his throat and was crushing it easily. She brought him closer to her face, her eyes now showing sprinkles of dark red. "And YOU should be grateful I don't crumble you into fine powder. If I were you, I would watch where I step. Got it?"

The Beast of Deceit squeaked as the pressure on his neck grew heavier. The Soul Jam in Flower's lap glowed, veins of gold and turquoise starting to spread from her eyes to her cheeks, though she didn't notice. She then slammed Shadow Milk Cookie down on the ground, the glowing veins disappearing.

"Biscuits and eggs are in the fridge. Help yourself."

She stared down at the jester, who slowly began to crawl backwards from the predatory stare. Once he was by the door, Shadow Milk quickly flew away with a whine, "You're no fun~!" Flower knew that was a lie, she remembered how Pure Vanilla would mention Shadow Milk would get flustered when anyone would dare stand up to him.

"What a crazy family I have."

personally hope the friendship (and relationship????) routes are both possible for beasts, but real talk how would beast and ancients’ subjects handle that????

excited to see how i.e.

- strawberry crepe and espresso would have to deal with mystic flour and shadow milk (shoutout to baau for one possibility!)

- pitaya would deal with eternal sugar (hollyberry sharing both pitaya’s love of fighting and eternal’s love for sweets and struggle with confrontation oop)

- this is already covered super amazingly well in resolute volition on ao3 but dark cacao and kingdom confronting mystic flour’s views on life with apathy — how would other kingdoms see the beasts’ views ig?

- pitaya + scovilia (incl capsaicin!, mala sauce) would deal with spices who crave destruction VS using their strength to protect cookiekind

- there are two milk cookies like… milk cookie is buff healer defense who denies the truth of one cookie falling into darkness at some points, and shmilk cookie… :))

- what culture will silent salt’s place pull from, and how will it be different from the salty sea cookies of the creme republic??

soooo many ways they could go about it, it’s pretty fun finding the cutscenes where the cookie kingdom and other places get affected — only one that doesmt have this is burning spice’s story im guessing because itd be him destroying everything but hmmmmm

It’s been a series of inconveniences for Shadow Milk. In some ways, he’d been dealt a worse hand than his peers. Having his body completely destroyed, he’s been relegated once again to being a mere specter. Not the best circumstance to be in when threatened by the so-called Herald of Penance, as they stand diametrically opposed to each other; but it’s alright… the former ancient hero has hurt many in his wake of salvation, hasn’t he? Perhaps one of those sad victims of his could help the poor old poet. Ideally, one who who’d be willing to work side by side with him despite his notoriety, and one who dedicates themselves so neatly to Knowledge…

Ah! They’ll do just fine. A lonely little child prodigy, sole witness to the Beast’s rise? While they’re still a shut in, more keen on following a lost prince around, and skeptical of his wishes, Shadow Milk can be patient, just for them. After all, it’s not like he’s got a lot of good options, and he knows their curious little mind won’t have them wary forever. They’ll hear him out eventually, and besides… they’ve got quite the mechanical talent, and Shadow Milk just so happens to be lacking a body!

Until then and thereafter, he promises, he’ll keep them safe and alert. He prefers his prodigy alive and on their two feet, after all. What for? Well, they only know so much now, but if they want to really know their potential, all they need to do is call for him, and he’ll show them how deep the well of Knowledge truly goes.

I've been thinking about this. Especially with strawberry Crepe being with Shadow Milk in Basu AU. If you manage to ask a question during shadow milk's good mood, he will slide into a lecture mode. And he's a pretty good teacher. The more he gets into the lecture, the more he slowly slides from the Mad Clown to Fun Professor. The kind that students love and keep engaged in class.

Awww cute thought! I think Crepe and Shmilk have a good dynamic in that sense, with Crepe able to listen to the beast freely and go into lecture mode. Not gonna lie there are definitely times where they look a little teacher-pupil, when Crepe isn’t as bewildered by him but instead receptive to him. They shouldn’t feel this way because they’re fully aware he’s a beast himself; but then again, when Shmilk poses no threat to them, why wouldn’t they be invested by his knowledge? Especially when he no longer acts that flamboyant, it almost feels oddly normal. No doubt Crepe would’ve been a good student if the dark flour war hadn’t destroyed their chances of attending school

Perhaps it would be during one of Shadow Milk lecture modes, that strawberry Crepe got a glimpse of who he might've once been. Not sure how shadow milk himself would feel about that though. A trait of his past that's still there.

One can only imagine what Shadow Milk would feel about it, but I wonder, if him being the first Headmaster is true, if he thinks Crepe would’ve made a great student.

how does shadow milk feel about saint vanilla? (love your art btw)

I answered it vaguely before, but Shadow Milk is very agitated and furious at Pure Vanilla for corrupting. If he truly was guiding his life from nearly the beginning, he certainly expected the outcome to be way different from what it ended up being. He wanted to break Pure Vanilla for sure, make him lose his hope and sense of purpose all at once, but while he was kinda hoping for an eventual revelation (a la Truthless Recluse), which he got in a sense—he was not expecting its outcome, the birth of the fatalistic, self-sacrificial Saint Vanilla, who proceeded to break his strings in retaliation.

Shmilk lost his body through other means, so it’s really not helping that he once again can’t do what he wants to the best of his ability. He wants to get back at him, someway and somehow. He wants his puppet back or gone or something. He hates his hands being partially tied, though—the lab’s a no-go after The Event, and there’s not a lot of dough-creating cookies crawling around… so there’s gotta be another way for him to regain his body (it is very possible but not finalized rn that Shmilk doesn’t have his soul jam), right? Something or someone who could use his… input, right?

What is Crepe’s relationship like with Shadow Milk cookie’s other kids? IE: Candy apple and that purple dude

They may be confused why their master's putting his faith in a child, one of Vanilla's no less, but once they learn Crepe's a robotics genius who could build him a new body, they're all in on whatever he's got in mind for Crepe!

While all three of them aren't always around Crepe (even Shmilk acts more like a summon/shows up for Crepe occasionally), I can see Candy Apple and Black Sapphire (mostly Black Sapphire) gently prodding Crepe along on their journey. Crepe has their own goals, they hang with Choco, but sometimes the two travelers bump into a pair of strangers who seem to share things that... hm. Seem like they could help them and Choco, no?
