The Highland (Scottish Gaelic: Bò Ghàidhealach; Scots: Heilan coo) is a Scottish breed of rustic cattle. It originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Western Islands of Scotland and has long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, able to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region. The first herd-book dates from 1885; two types – a smaller island type, usually black, and a larger mainland type, usually dun – were registered as a single breed. It is reared primarily for beef, and has been exported to several other countries

“Boo!!!”
I mean “Moooo!”
Or, “Bov,”
as in Bovine... In this case an original and exaggerated color oil marker drawing of mine of a Highland Cattle, aka Bò Ghàidhealach, aka Heilan coo. It is a Scottish cattle breed with long horns and long, wavy, woolly double layered coats that are coloured red, ginger, black, dun, yellow, white, grey, "silver" (white but with a black nose and ears), or tan, as they also may be brindled.

@plantyhamchuk what breed are they? can you tell us more about them?
yes! thanks for asking. these are highland cattle, descended from a breed of cattle originating in the scottish highlands, called Bò Ghàidhealach in scottish gaelic. highlands are a really old breed, dating back to some time in the second millennium. originally there were two distinct highland breeds; one smaller, darker in color, coming from the slightly harsher climate of the highlands while the other were a bit larger, more likely to be blonde or red-brown, and lived on a more sheltered landscape. nowadays, they are recognized as a single breed due to cross breeding of these two distinct groups, and are all sorts of colors including lovely bridle patterned. they are also a reasonably small breed size-wise. highlands are well suited to harsh cold climates, and can live through a winter here in the northeast US quite comfortably without much shelter. the cow in the picture above lives with a herd who had a three walled shelter their first winter here, but they didn't really use it that much so now they just live in the woods all winter under some tree cover. their coats are very warm and grow thicker during the cold months. they are also great browsers, meaning they will eat from plants like small shrubs and low hanging tree branches more readily than some other breeds. for this reason in particular, highland cattle are a good choice for projects where the land has been previously mismanaged/let go. they have been on the land pictured above helping us get the pastures back to a healthy population of grasses and legumes for the past 3 or 4 years through rotational grazing practices, eating and trampling things like wild rose and buckthorn, which are not native to this area and will readily colonize unmanaged pastureland/clearcuts etc. they are also a pretty relaxed breed of cow as far as temperament, and while most people raise them primarily for meat, they produce a rich milk with high fat content as well.
can u guys believe...babey

bò Ghàidhealach- Highland Cow by Angus Robertson Via Flickr: Highland cattle in their natural environment. They are calm easy going beasts, able to withstand anything the weather throws at them. Historically, they are related to the Yak, and came to Scotland with migrating Siberian people while the ice caps were retreating north, many thousands of years ago.
