So I know this is sort of unrelated to the brackets, but you seem familiar with a lot of bls since you run this blog and have a large following of bl enthusiasts. I think it would be cool if there could also be a way to give people recommendations (you or your audience) so we could be more familiar with all the people in the polls (besides just watching a show blindly).

Oh this sounds like a lovely idea! I've definitely already discovered dramas that I hadn't known about before through this (I mentioned in my response to the question about my favorite BLs but I discovered DNA Says Love You from someone submitting one of the characters from it lol). I've only really been in the BL fandom for about a year and a half, so I have lots more I can learn and would love to hear more about dramas that I might not be as familiar with from y'all too!!!

During the submissions period when we don't have any active polls going on, feel free to send me any recs for dramas and I can publish them here! Could be especially smart if you have some lesser known characters you want to give a better shot at winning! I'll use the tag #show propaganda

I can start by giving a few recs of some of my favorite lesser known dramas! (Though y'all can give recs for well known dramas as well!)

Ghost Host Ghost House (2022): Kevin has come from America to visit his extended family in Thailand and to also do some ghost-hunting for his ghost hunting show online. While he's there, he meets Pluem who works for his family and is also terrified of ghosts. Things get more complicated when it becomes increasingly clear that Kevin's family is hiding something from him. I loved this show so much (binged it all in one night when I couldn't sleep)! The chemistry between Kevin and Pluem is insane and so sweet! The story itself is also great and emotional and really hits you in the feels. The main problem this drama suffers from is being too short. I think it would have greatly benefited from an extra couple episodes to flush out some more of Kevin's character and backstory, but it still is a fun watch!

My Tooth Your Love (2022): Bai Lang is a restaurant owner with a crippling fear of dentists and a bad toothache. He gets dragged by his older sister to the dentist office where one of her juniors from university is the owner/head dentist, Jin Xuan. Bai Lang reluctantly begins to trust Jin Xuan more and the two get closer, but Bai Lang is struggling with a lot more than just a toothache. Despite its silly premise, the show definitely gets a lot more serious and dark at times and definitely made me cry at a few points. Again, the leads have great chemistry and the main thing the story suffers from is its length as some of the B and C plots get lost, but it still gives a satisfying story for the main plot and is definitely worth it!

Jack O' Frost (2023): Salaryman Fumiya and illustrator Ritsu have been dating for some time now but after a fight, the two break up and Ritsu runs out of their apartment. While he's out, he gets into an accident and gets amnesia, completely forgetting who Fumiya is entirely. Fumiya, who regrets breaking up with Ritsu, sees this as a new opportunity to start again and hopefully get the relationship right this time and decides not to tell Ritsu that they had been dating and had broken up. But Ritsu wants to regain his memories and has the growing feeling that something is off about his relationship to Fumiya. This normally isn't my cup of tea (I'm not big on stories about breaking up and all of that) BUT I really liked this one. It's just such a pretty show with such a profound sense of loneliness in it, especially as it hops between flashbacks of Fumiya & Ritsu's relationship when it was going well and when it was falling apart and then cuts to how things are now. The guy who plays Fumiya really hits for me. I know the last episode was a bit of a hit or miss for some people but I liked it (and also it seems like final episodes aren't always the strongest element of the BL industry). This is also not a show to watch if you like happy stories or healthy relationships lol.

my favorite thing on earth is platonic dreamnap they're just so *clenches fist*

it was like a year ago but I read a post about quackity selling sapnap an "enderdragon" and quackity dropping a fucked up dream off at his door and then bouncing. The thing had stopped there but my brain hadn't

was it one of those where quackity knew it was wrong? one where he expected sapnap to agree with him? did he see dream as so subhuman that he didn't think twice about it? did he hear sapnap rant about how much he hated dream and assume that he would enjoy owning Dream and getting to do to him the same things Quackity had enjoyed?

and, if he didn't, if quackity knew that delivering dream like that would cause sapnap distress, to ruin anything he may have had left with his once-fiance, did he do it out of spite? had he had dream the whole time, broken and under his thumb, until his fight with sapnap escalated? and he begun to associate dream with sapnap, and dropped him off in a way to 1) get dream off his hands and 2) get back at sapnap?

How would sapnap react? Would it be anger? would he chase quackity? would he bring dream inside and try to help, only learning more and more howbad a shape dream was in? Would quackity lie and say dream had chosen this, or it was sam's idea? Would sapnap buy it? would there be some part of him that was happy?

My #1 post of 2022

George's Desk Light

Vauge Hollow Knight au in that Dream is a lumifly. Nothing else is really specified lol

Trigger warning for dehumanization and objectification, as well as a sprinkle of neglect. This is my first writing I'm posting directly on tumblr so please be kind >.<

George loved his desk light.

It was just an object, one Quackity had given him for his birthday, but it was so perfect that he loved it.

It was a little glass jar, not ornately carved. For all he could tell, Quackity may have made it out of an old jelly jar. The top was covered in a thin metal lid that had two latches on either side. Holes were poked through, allowing the small lumifly hybrid to breathe. One in the center was larger than the others, allowing George to drop food flakes every few days to keep the hybrid alive. For a while it had begged, asking for food more often, but Quackity had warned him that this one was particularly gluttonous, and that if he fed it more than every other day that it would become sick. So, for the sake of the lumify, he ignored the small cries. They stopped eventually, anyways. 

Turning the lantern off and on was pretty simple, considering its power was near limitless. Lumiflies created their light through flight. George’s hybrid, however, would often just curl up in the bottom of the jar, sleeping or shaking. Quackity had found a solution, however. On the outside of the jar there was a small chain. On one end it was connected to a small collar around the lumify’s neck. The other had something akin to a clamp, one big enough it wouldn’t fall through the hole in the lid and get stuck. On the side of the jar a small peg had been attached. Whenever George wanted to turn the lantern on, all he would have to do is tug the chain and attach it to the peg. The chain was short enough that, once attached, the lumifly would not be able to touch the ground without choking itself. This meant that as long as the clamp was attached, the lumifly would have to fly and therefore create light. 

The chain doubled as a way to keep the lumifly contained. If George decided to change the glass, all he would need to do is affix a peg to the side and keep ahold of the little chain to place the lumifly in its new home. Sapnap had given him an ornate bottle a few days ago, one that had originally stored alcohol. George had started preparing it, just waiting for the glue to set. He’d tried to clean it out as best he could, but he figured the scent would probably last a long time. He asked Quackity, and the man said that it would be fine, that lumiflies were resistant to any fumes in the air. 

He sat at his desk, smiling as he read his book. Beside him, the lumifly fluttered, pretty and graceful in the center of the jar. Sometimes, George could swear the other was watching along, but that was silly. Lumiflies bred for captivity never learned how to read, only wild ones. And Quackity wouldn’t be the type to steal a lumifly from its home. 

George hummed, turning the page. 

Maybe he should find a couple picture books at the library. The lumifly would probably enjoy looking at the pictures. 

George loved his desk light.

tumblr etiquette 101

a list that is nowhere near exhaustive, from yours truly.

First off, welcome! Whether you’re a twitter veteran looking for anything but whatever twitter is, or a new user just done signing up, glad to see you in our ranks beloveds! Welcome home. Refer to this quick tour to make sure your fandom experience (or tumblr experience in general) is a positive one!

Disclaimer: I know it’s long, but please try to read or skim through til the end if you’re new here! This is by no means meant to be a rule book (for the most part lol), only a guide to help you get settled easier!

1) Your blog

This is where people will see and interact with you, so put some effort into it!

Try to choose a name (url) that’s simple. You can see it as your brand, it’s how people will perceive you and remember you. If you’d like to interact with other users here (and not use the site just for the content) it’s better to have something short and sweet, preferably without spaces. (Of course, these are only suggestions.) Rest assured, you can change it literally any time you want.

Have a theme. Utilize the tool that lets you edit your blog’s color or the font of your bio! You can make it match your profile picture, or your blog if it has a theme of its own. Make it feel homey :]

Fill in your bio. People will be checking out your profile probably more often than you think. Don’t leave it empty! Put in any information you’re comfortable with sharing and isn’t too personal (like your age if you’re a minor, or other TMI that can be found on other people’s carrds). It’s always better to add a name/nickname people can use to refer to you by, but feel free to use your blog description to shitpost still.

You can have an intro post. More often than not, you’ll see a blog have a pinned post, a post permanently appearing at the top of a blog until you pin another post or unpin it. You can make one of those, if you’d like to introduce yourself in more length, link any other socials or a carrd, and show others visiting your blog how you tag things so it’ll be easy for them to navigate. Not an obligation.

Keep your anonymity and your safety. It should go without saying, but there’s no harm in repeating it just in case. Your comfort, privacy and safety has the utmost importance. Don’t share any information you don’t want to. Don’t share your age if you’re a minor, or any other incredibly personal info. I’d encourage you to go by a nickname that’s not your real name, (blog name, your brand, remember?) since there’s safety in anonymity, and that’s lowkey one of the big deals of tumblr, but that’s up to you still.

Choose what you want to be visible. Your liked posts and who you follow are all things you can set to keep to yourself and hide from the publics eye, how handy! You should go through all the setting while you’re at it, set it to your comfort.

Side blogs are a thing. You can have multiple blogs that you can use for different things (see: different fandoms, art blog, etc) to keep them organized or away from your followers. Just remember that the replies and off-anon asks you send will be from your main blog, as well as where you follow other blogs from.

2) Interacting with others

You’ve set up your account, now comes the fun part!

Follow to your heart’s desire. If you care about others seeing who you follow, fear not! In tumblr, usually only two types of blogs keep their following visible to others: newbies, and big blogs using it to point people on other good blogs’ direction. Just turn it off, and go ham following people.

Customize your dashboard. Gonna mention just two things here: this is another reason why it’s really important that you follow blogs without sparing, your dash will collect dust otherwise; and you should turn off “best stuff first” in your dashboard settings, to have a better community here and all.

Follow tags. You can set it in your settings that posts with your followed tags appear on your dashboard.

You can check the og post for edits and context. When you see a reblogged post you don’t understand the context of (or don’t recognize the character in case of fanarts), click on the profile so it will take you to the original post. From there you can check the original poster’s tags to get the context, or see if there have been any edits made to the post, since when you edit a post it doesn’t update any past reblogs.

Send people asks... This is how you make mutuals, people! Do it off-anon if you’d like them to know your blog, or anon if you’d rather not! (You can still end your messages with a signature to show you’re the same person, -[name] is one example.) Send them nice messages, ask their opinion on something, discuss things, or just straight up shitpost lol. Go wild. The sky’s your limit and it’s definitely more than 280 characters.

...and let them ask you! You can set your preference in the settings, do it on desktop tumblr to access more settings tho! What you can customize on mobile is limited (like letting people ask you things anonymously, that’s only on desktop settings). In my personal opinion, it’s always better to tag their username (or a nickname you give them, if they’re a friend) on that post, since you wouldn’t want your interactions with your friends to get buried in your blog forever.

Comment on posts. If you have something to say but don’t want the post to appear on your blog you can add a comment. The owner of the post will get a notif for it, but for anyone else you need to tag them.

For the love of god, reblog. People will only see your liked posts if you have it visible to public and they specifically go on your blog to look at them. You like something? You reblog. It’s already hard for posts to circulate properly, if you don’t reblog them literally no one will see them. If not for anything do it for the artists. Just hold and drag on mobile to fast rb.

3) Your Posts

Finally here! Don’t be a lurker, post and engage!

Make use of “read more”. If your post is long, add it. That’s what you clicked on earlier to expand this post. On desktop leave an empty line and you’ll see three dots appear, and on mobile type :readmore: on that empty line.

Draft a post to come back to it later. Pretty self explanatory.

Queue your post. Whether it’s your own post or you’re reblogging, make use of the queue feature to a) not spam reblog and fill up the dashboard of people following you and b) keep your blog active while you’re gone. Mess around in the settings, it’s fairly easy to set up.

Schedule your post. Same as queueing, the only difference is you get to choose the exact time your post will go up. Handy if you want to schedule a post for certain dates like april fools, or 5 years in the future for some reason. 

Format your texts. You can do all kinds of fancy stuff here (that’s a link, try pressing on it). Twitter doesn’t have this, make use of it. Changes depending on whether you’re on mobile or desktop. (Desktop has less features.)

Check your stats. If you’re trying to understand the algorithm better or want to look at some pretty graphs you can get your data on that on desktop tumblr.

@ people in comments. You’ll get all the notifs when people comment on your posts but they won’t see your reply unless you tag them in your message.

4) Tags, and tagging a post

This is where my earlier statement “this isn’t a rule book” stops being applicable. It’s not a war crime to go against these, I won’t come chasing you (don’t take my word for this) but you’ll work up a bad rep. Just saying lol.

Do NOT crosstag posts. It’s really tempting to add unrelated tags to increase your posts’ interaction, I know, but that’s not what tumblr is about. Don’t be a dick and make other communities’ experience worse for them.

Always tag your posts with “crit/critical/discourse/etc” if it calls for it. There’s no exceptions to it. This is the reason you see people migrating to tumblr. Let people enjoy things.

Don’t main tag a critical/negative post. If your crit post is about “Thing”, you add the “Thing critical” tag, but not the “Thing” tag. People block crit tags if they don’t want to see it, don’t shove it in their faces by main tagging it. 

If you don’t want to see something, just block it. Another reason why people are able to survive on tumblr. You don’t start discourse, you don’t make call-outs, you block. You can find something for every community you can think of if you go looking for it. The worst of the worst probably won’t ever appear on your dash, but if you’re worried or feel the need for it, you know where the block button is.

Feel free to shitpost or ramble. More often than not you’ll see people rb a post with a comment, and their elaboration will be in the tags. The tags are only visible on your profile and the notifications of the owner of the og blog. Just a thing people do.

Reblog artists’ posts with nice comments in the tags! Commenting on a drawing is usually done through the tags (Not an obligation, again, just a thing people do. Feel free to add your comment on the rb itself if you’d want other people to see it tho!) and leave nice messages for the artists! It’s a win-win for everyone involved. 

If you have more than a single follower, always use the common tw warning tags. You don’t need to tw everything, but tw’ing some common things is the bare minimum human decency. Keep it safe for others. 

Tag a post “long post” if it’s really long. Pretty self explanatory. Don’t make people scroll through all that please lol. 

You can use them to organize your blog. This is more of a pro tip, if you’d like to not miss a post in your blog, cause they will start pilin’ up soon enough.

#Liveblogging is pretty fun. If you’d like to talk to people during streams, don’t forget to add the relevant tags still! Again, you won’t show up on people’s dash otherwise.

I knew from the outset I wouldn't convince you, but it's quite the novelty to find anyone willing to debate, and I wondered if others might chip in with their detailed view, but it seems they won't.

I still stand by what I said, but I will add this:

Everything I've written, on redemption, nobility, seeing the best in them, applies to the Indigo League and Johto at the latest.

Hoenn and Sinnoh are a No Man's Land, as if waiting for what was to come.

After that, from Unova to the present, my view aligns fairly well with yours, in that brief, isolated acts of 'niceness' on a whim don't change their permanent status as evil.

Too much has happened now for me to forgive.

The 'good deeds', such as they are, only tend to appear in The Team Rocket Episode, which often feel completely unrelated to the main plotline.

Whereas in the past, emotions, little slips of personality and better behaviour were everywhere, not just the specially sanctioned, over-hyped incidents.

Same with the comedy: constant, not merely those grotesque, non-canonical (I hope) two-parters where the height of humour is Goh stuffing his head up Gulpin's arsehole.

Don't make fun of assault!

We could say yours fitted the sub, and mine the dub, so we're both right.

It's not as if we're completely at odds, only that your opinion kicks in earlier than mine, and few agree with either of us.

If we did a poll, and the options were:

A. They were always evil.

B. They've been evil since Unova.

C. They aren't evil and never have been.

Then the third answer would win in a landslide.

I have never heard anyone else take this stance. It is unique.

Nowhere, not on the old sites, or forums, or blogs, have I seen a fan start on the assumption Team Rocket were actually evil.

They're accepted as villains, for narrative purposes, but not taken seriously.

You put my own question back, ask if I'm trying to deflect 'the most common and prevalent criticism' of redeeming them, but it's not common or prevalent. Only you say it.

No one objects to Kanto Team Rocket, but they do to Unova: the era that divides fans. Something's up to cause their anger.

And what you offer today doesn't make any sense.

You dismiss the possibility of redemption as Pokémon is only a light-hearted children's cartoon, so any such atonement is too deep for the tone.

But then you'd have me believe that it also contains this ultra-complex, multi-layered portrait of deep psychopathy that matches real-life examples of human evil.

Surely a programme too shallow to deal with self-improvement couldn't then have a convincing, medically accurate depiction of wickedness as well.

Even if Team Rocket were intended to appeal to adults, that's still in the setting of that light-hearted children's cartoon, so it couldn't push it to excess.

And if they are for older fans, allowing proper evil to exist in them, why couldn't these adult minds also deal with signs of redemption?

Not only that, but everyone in this fandom who loves the trio has done so from childhood, thus they aren't so esoteric and far removed kids can't enjoy them, and out-and-out degenerate evil doesn't tend to have a large following with the young.

When I bring up good things they've done, you tell me it's because evil is perfectly capable of feeling love and concern.

Ah, come on. It's not the same.

Whilst I don't believe any human being could be 100% soulless, as that's a 'perfect' state, 99% will do just as well, as that minor glint amounts to sod all.

It's like claiming if the sun died we could all keep warm around the power light on my Game Boy Advance (rest in peace).

Team Rocket were intended to be sympathetic. It would have been impossible to justify their presence in every episode unless the audience warmed to them.

This is the complete opposite of fictional evil.

In crime dramas, if a murderer is shown with a family, putting children to bed, before then walking in to the night to hunt for prey, our reaction is not supposed to be:

Ooh, they're so complex! There's good in everyone after all!

Rather, the contrast of normal domesticity with absolute brutality, is more evil, not less.

That they can maintain a home life whilst doing that, as an ideal cover to avoid suspicion, is intended to chill and disturb viewers, not render the bastard likeable.

We cannot grasp how a person capable of such cruelty can also be so superficially respectable, and suggests such freaks could be operating nearby and we'd never suspect, i.e. no one is to be trusted.

And if it's not a falsehood, if they actually are invested in family life without pretence, that's even worse!

They can split their mind completely into parallel lives, turning kindness and compassion on and off like a light switch, which is inhuman.

With Team Rocket, noble acts are meant to attract approval, not sheer disbelief.

Context, feel and atmosphere aren't mere trivialities, they're vital for altering the entire situation.

If there was a case where the Team Rocket of the Indigo League did the exact same thing as their Unova iteration, in terms of plot, target, goals and action, the similarities would exist on paper only.

The difference would be that the Kanto stuff existed in a jocular realm: bickering, one-liners, wry music, absurd sound effects, insults and banter with the Twerps.

Nothing about it told you to take it to heart.

Whereas, come Unova, and with it the po-faced, humourless writing, dropping all the fun and anime touches, there's no reason to laugh or like it now.

What they've tried to claw back since is forced and embarrassing, relying on ker-razy and 'random' interludes to hide the lack of wit.

And how many times since Unova have Team Rocket and the Twerps worked together or played on their on-off friendship?

In Pikachu Re-Volts! Butch and Cassidy steal and brainwash Jessie and James's Pokémon, beat them unconscious and dump their bodies in the street.

When they come to, it's at Joy's where the Twerps took them for treatment.

Jessie and James refuse to help from shame, until Ash cries in front of them.

When Cassidy and Butch accuse both of aiding the police, Jessie claims they're only using Jenny as she's attractive.

The dark element to this is how quickly Cassidy and Butch accept the feigned friendliness after all they've done.

Since neither are portrayed as stupid, they expect Jessie and James to realize the violence is deserved, and coming back grovelling for more is knowing their place.

I'm yet to watch the infamous Cassidy and Butch return, so forgive my ignorance.

When I initially heard about their business, I assumed it was all a ruse.

Am I to understand it's genuine, they really have left the organisation and are living law-abiding lives?

So...that's it then?

They're retired, from theft and the anime, and never to be seen again?

And Giovanni just let 'em go, no bother?

And they're still together, so Neoshipping is...canonized?

This pair were 'the real deal' when it came to the underworld: ruthless, merciless, prepared to do whatever it took to get ahead, hence their success, and much worse than Jessie and James ever could be.

And yet after all that they apparently just decided one day to stop being evil and go straight, and kept to this pledge?

What, they had an off-screen moral epiphany, did they? Crime doesn't pay, even when it does?

Or all their previous behaviour is erased, and now they've 'always been' just as laidback as Jessie and James?

I don't know why I'm surprised. This happens to every dug-up old face.

But if characters such as these can suddenly flip, be written over so easily, it's probably how they'll end our Team Rocket, if they ever do finish it off.

'Redemption' of a kind is the only ending I can comprehend, not that I expect an authentic arc of self-discovery these days.

It'll be a repeat of that Unova incident:

Team Rocket: Evil, Evil, Evil, Evil! Evil, Evil, Evil, Evil! Evil, Evil—

Looker: "Why don't you help?"

Team Rocket: "Okay!"

Unova was their own fault.

I theorise this is what the writing team wanted ever since Shudo left, but Gen. Three and Four had to promote remakes, so obliged to keep a tenuous link to the past.

Once gone, it was open season.

Even if you were right, and Unova Team Rocket weren't particularly at odds with their Indigo incarnation, not many fans left by then remembered.

Most watching Unova knew only Hoenn and Sinnoh's silly self-parodies. One can't expect them to take the severe alteration too well.

Team Rocket also went from regulars to the background, which emphasises the change and suggests it was done out of spite.

That, alongside the reptilian art style, complete erasing of previous eras, and smug reset where Ash suddenly knew nothing, was too much all at once.

Plus, the third series was a rushed, panicked apology for it, and such hysteria validates the critics, telling them that they were right to feel hatred.

There's a received wisdom, regurgitated word-for-word, that Team Rocket 'went back to their old selves' in Kalos, which, besides not being true, is so suspiciously common it sounds like official propaganda.

If so, it panders to popular grievances, admitting there was a shift in Unova, whilst feeding 'em more of the same, promising fans they can come back 'cause everything's all right now.

If the sub cast loathe Unova, it suggests some noticeable mood swing, and I doubt they'd admit it unless bosses allowed them.

Don't worry, they'll come over all fond once its remakes are due, then we'll have posts on here shilling Unova as 'vindicated by history' and a 'lost classic' ahead of its time.

You previously reflected younger fans may have trouble caring about them as much as we did.

Well that is indeed the case.

During Gen. Six I came across a list entitled Top Twenty Most Hated Characters In Pokémon.

Despite the 'of all time' tone, it covered only Unova and Kalos, because that's all the kids taking part had seen.

Team Rocket were all there. In fact Jessie took second place (behind Serena).

The view was James shouldn't be on it, and was alright without Jessie and Meowth.

Those two however, 'should die', and Jessie especially was 'a whore'(!) who must be, I think, 'burnt alive'.

...

Now, something's not right there, is it?

I was appalled, as I never seen such extreme opposition, and I couldn't imagine what provoked their hostility.

Later I realized when I bring Jessie to mind, it's how she was originally, but that's not who they mean.

This antipathy is wholly rooted in everything from Unova and Kalos, from fans with no memory or knowledge of the first four generations.

It's how a new audience reacts to the modern trio, and it's THAT repulsed.

How have we got to this stage unless there's a real, stark alteration in how they're written?

It proves that current goodwill towards Team Rocket is largely inspired by content from the past, and that there is precious little new coming through, certainly not enough to win over this 'Alt-Genner' intake.

Is that lack the reason so many blogs here are abandoned?

If these kids still watch Pokémon, scorn for the likes of Georgia, Burgundy and Bianca will have long died off, but the vicious disgust they're nursing for two-thirds of Team Rocket is probably worse.

Even if it's a minority view, it shouldn't exist at all, and won't improve under this regime.

And they're the future of the fandom!

Their kind will be here when we're all gone, and they hate Team Rocket!

People won't discuss things because they're terrified the PoCo cheerleaders will bully them to death for speaking their minds.

I think it has got slightly better. When I was first here three years ago I wouldn't hear a peep of dissent.

Now I see it occasionally, even if it is couched in the most meek, over-cautious, please-don't-hit-me language.

What I've noticed is the majority have to be really pushed to say anything.

When idiocies come up in Pokémon, you critique, I mock, and the rest stay silent, until the point of breaking.

I always know a plot's gone badly wrong if I see anyone but you offering complaint.

To risk attack means they've snapped and ain't gonna take it (good for them).

I'm nervous about this Butch and Cassidy episode considering it's so terrible even the best sycophancy couldn't crush the outrage.

If you hate it, then I'm not going to like it, am I?

Good job I'm not invested in Galar Team Rocket, else it might set my paralysis off again.
