Quaeschning & Schnauss - Thirst

TRACK 6 FROM THE NEW CD VERSION OF 'SYNTHWAVES'.

Pure Berlin-school bliss from synthmeisters Thorsten Quaeschning and Ulrich Schnauss. Synthwaves pays homage to the masters of the past, yet feels fresh and enchanting. Crisp, interlocking patterns are modulated and mutated with mathematical precision into eight pieces of pristine, post-kosmische sounds to float away to. During two intense weeks in Berlin, Quaeschning and Schnauss – both students of the great, late maestro Edgar Froese – locked themselves in a studio full of vintage synthesizers, analog sequencers and drum machines, and the result is a gorgeous set of purely electronic music. As the title suggests, a bit of tongue-in-cheek playfullness was allowed during the process – however, all of these pieces sparkle with real emotion and warmth. As with the finest Tangerine Dream soundtracks it's the kind of music that paints vivid pictures on the canvas of the listeners mind: synth plucks hang in the air like glaring neon in metropolitan dusk, and zero-gravity pads hover like ghostly morning mist travelling over empty coastlines. Poly-rhythmic patterns are allowed to build - slowly but steadily - bar after bar, until synth-Satori is reached. By the time the last track on this album runs out, it's obvious these two producers have themselves become masters of their craft.

The very strong quake was located about 56 miles (91 kilometers) east southeast of Perryville, Alaska, and happened around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said. “This event was felt throughout the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak,” according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

Homes lose water as wells run dry in drought-ravaged basin MALIN, Ore. (AP) Judy and Jim Shanks know the exact date their home’s well went dry—June 24. Since then, their life has been an endless cycle of imposing on relatives for showers and laundry, hauling water to feed a small herd of cattle and desperately waiting for a local well-drilling company to make it to their name on a monthslong wait list. The couple’s well is among potentially hundreds that have dried up in recent weeks in an area near the Oregon-California border suffering through a historic drought, leaving homes with no running water just a few months after the federal government shut off irrigation to hundreds of the region’s farmers for the first time ever. Officials have formal reports of 117 empty wells but suspect more than 300 have gone dry in the past few weeks as the consequences of the Klamath River basin’s water scarcity extend far beyond farmers’ fields. Worried homeowners face waits of six months or more to get new, deeper wells dug because of the surging demand, with no guarantee that those wells, too, won’t ultimately go dry. Biden orders tough new vaccination rules for federal government (AP) President Joe Biden on Thursday announced sweeping new pandemic requirements for millions of federal workers. Federal workers will be required to attest they’ve been vaccinated against the coronavirus or else face mandatory masking, weekly testing, distancing and other new rules. The newly strict guidelines are aimed at boosting sluggish vaccination rates among the four million Americans who draw federal paychecks and to set an example for private employers around the country. The administration encouraged businesses to follow its lead on incentivizing vaccinations by imposing burdens on the unvaccinated. Rather than mandating that federal workers receive vaccines, the plan will make life more difficult for those who are unvaccinated to encourage them to comply. Biden also directed the Defense Department to look into adding the COVID-19 shot to its list of required vaccinations for members of the military. And he has directed his team to take steps to apply similar requirements to all federal contractors. Biden also urged state and local governments to use funds provided by the coronavirus relief package to incentivize vaccinations by offering $100 to individuals who get the shots. A rooftop café. A massive plate of beans and rice, and he digs in as the blue sky shines overhead. Sunglasses on your nose, and on his - no one can see how closely the warehouse is being scoped out.

“Security?” he mutters, spooning himself more beans.

“I’m picking up about eight cameras trained on the building - six are focused on three entrances. North, west, and east.”

“Not south?”

“No. And the north entrances double as a loading dock.”

“Mmm.”

The appearance of a casual conversation - anyone might be having it. Any woman might be busy looking at her phone in her lap.

“According to the blueprints, the west entrance leads to the inner offices, not the actual factory,” you explain. “Where the upper-levels work. The guys in charge.”

“The guys we’re supposed to get.”

“Mmhmm.” Phone put away, you lean back in your chair, surveying Bucky across the table with a level gaze - he can see your line of sight even through your sunglasses. He offers a smile. “You don’t think the factory workers are guilty, do you?”

He ponders this, scooping up a last bite of rice. “Usually they aren’t,” he says after a moment. “Just trying to eke out a living. Wanna investigate that before we decide what to do?”

“Yeah. I think I’ll have you talk to a few of them.”

Typical. Bucky always gets the foreign language work. He doesn’t mind, though - not when it’s your idea.

“Check out two o’clock,” you say softly, leaning close across the table. His eyes flit over - towards the west entrance, where a man is approaching, flanked by two armed guards. One opens the door - big man goes through.

“No locks,” Bucky notices.

“I wonder how long it takes for them to notice an intrusion.”

“You sure you don’t want to go for the long-distance kills on this one?” he asks, swigging some water. “That guy we just saw - a sniper’s dream.”

“Hmm?”

“Big head.”

A snort. Then a delighted laugh, and attention is being drawn from the other tables - Bucky keeps his head down, but he’s a bit busy being entranced by your pretty smile.

“And they say assassins don’t have a sense of humor,” you tease, soft and sly.

“Who says that? Our targets?”

“Well, they can’t say anything, can they?”

An exchange of grins - feral grins. His heart flutters a bit in his chest, but he doesn’t mind. Even discussing a mission, it’s so lovely just to be with you. Almost like a date.

“No, we can’t just kill the big guys,” you say after a moment, with a pinch in your brows. “We need to get the goods, too. Don’t need them infiltrating further than they are.”

The drug situation is bad enough as is, Bucky knows. However many tons are sitting in the factory - that’s that many tons that won’t be hitting the streets, upheaving communities, destroying lives.

“Hope you have something for the job,” he says with a wry twist of his lips, and your teeth gleam in your smile.

“Oh, Bucky,” you say, and it’s a pretty purr beneath the small chaos of the rooftop café. “I always have something for the job.”

It doesn’t really matter what you’re talking about, but somehow that tone of your voice always seems to leave him with a tent in his pants…

With curtains drawn that night in the hotel room, it’s down to business. You’re bent over a series of explosives - tense work, as it’ll be large enough to take down the entire factory. There are some modifications, you’d explained. And then rattled off some technical stuff Bucky didn’t understand.

So he cleans his guns. Alone.

The next morning sees separate missions: Bucky to quiz some factory workers, you to...well, he isn’t exactly sure. Something about making sure that all the higher-ups will be at the factory the next day. The scheduled mission.

Over cups of black coffee at a café across the street, he finds out he was right. The workers are in it for their families. Most at last chances. Trying to make a difference, to provide for dependents.

He texts this information to you, and you reply with: Okay. We’ll figure something out.

It’s late afternoon when he returns to the hotel; having caught some swing-shift workers on their way in, just to compare stories. The lights are off - Bucky can hear your heartbeat, a little quicker than usual - but you’re alone, so there mustn’t be any danger…

He closes the door behind him, and locks it. His eyes adjust as he hearts the flint of a match - his heart is in his throat, and -

A glowing light, across the room. A candle. Your face is glowing golden in the tiny light, your smile as broad and bright as the noon-day sky.

“Happy Birthday,” you say lightly, and his mouth falls open.

A cake? His birthday? It is? What -

“One hundred and two,” you continue, and the teasing in your voice is absolutely beautiful. Bucky wanders in without thinking, eyes glued to you. “That’s a pretty big number, Buck. Not everyone gets to grow as old as you.”

A growl, and he grasps your face in his hands, tilting it up for a very hard kiss, but somehow it’s not enough - there’s a flame tickling beneath his chin, but he doesn’t care.

He hasn’t had a birthday cake since 1942.

And now he has one. And a melting candle. And you.

“Bucky,” you giggle against his mouth. “Blow out the candle, please.”

Oh, right. A nervous chuckle and he pulls away. You lift the cake, and automatically - without even having to be reminded, he thinks of a wish.

The flame disappears in a trail of smoke.

“I know it’s not much,” you say softly, and in the sudden dark Bucky reaches over to turn on a lamp. There - that’s better. He can see you fully, and...oh.

That’s a new purchase. His eyes widen at the slip of silk and lace that clings to your curves - it’s not terribly revealing, but somehow you manage to be utterly enticing even in combat gear. So with just some extra skin showing, a cloud of the prettiest perfume -

Bucky is thoroughly seduced.

“‘Not much?’” he asks hoarsely, dragging his eyes back up to your face as you laugh, setting the small chocolate cake onto the table cleared of all explosives. “Baby...sweetheart. This is - ” He sucks in a breath. “I’m - I mean, I like cake and all, but - ”

Suddenly your hands are all over him -- but to remove his jacket, and your face is regrettably far from his…

You laugh at the turn of his lower lip into a pout. “How hungry are you, huh?” A purring question, that vibrates right down to his bones.

“For dinner, or -- ?”

Another laugh. “Which would you like first?”

“Dessert, please. Not the cake -- the other dessert.”

A lifted brow. The slyest of smirks. “Strip down, Barnes. I’ll be back.”

Back? From where? Oh - his gaze follows you to the bathroom, and after a moment he hears running water. Clothes. Right. Bucky peels off the layers, tossing them aside to be washed later.

Because wearing clean clothes every day is something relatively new to him. Since...since you.

“Can I come in?” he calls, a little plaintively. The idea of you standing around in that little slip where he can’t see is unbearable…

Your head peeks out, all smiles. “Grab the stuff from the mini fridge, will you?”

“Yes. Yeah, yeah, I can.” Bucky hustles. A bowl of strawberries, a bottle of champagne. How had you had time for this today? And for him?

His heart is swollen up, and it feels so good as he steps into the bathroom.

Candlelight. Glowing over silken curves, shining hair. Pretty smile. Your gentle fingers on his chest, running down his arms to pull him in. Tempting in the best way. The mission is for tomorrow, after all - but this is for tonight.

An evening lost in soapsuds - in wet skin on wet skin, soft giggles and sips of champagne. Lips stained red from strawberry-kisses. The bathroom gets steamy and humid - worse than outside - and the scent of jasmine seems to fill every corner.

“When I turned eleven, my pop got me a new baseball mitt,” Bucky remembers, as your silky hand traces up his leg, to rest on his knee. “Ma baked me a chocolate cake with boiled icing. Steve…” He pauses. Your hand doesn’t, and he swallows. “Steve drew me a picture of the girl I liked from social studies.”

“Oh yeah?” Sparkling eyes over pearly suds, flickering with the reflection of the candles. “What was her name?”

“Nancy.”

“Aww. Bucky and Nancy.”

“Oh, stop,” Bucky grumbles, and flicks some suds at your smug face to retaliate. It just makes you giggle, though - but he isn’t complaining.

“You could look her up,” you suggest, both hands on his knees now. A comforting touch, but he’s definitely feeling it between his legs. “See what she’s been up to.”

“Rocking in a chair in a nursing home?”

A twist of your lips. “And probably missing you every day.”

He laughs aloud - echoing in the bathroom. “Oh, for sure,” he agrees. “That scrawny Barnes boy that lobbed crumpled-up paper at the back of her head. She’s definitely thought of me. And fondly, too, I’m sure.”

“Oh, every girl misses the boy that makes her cry,” you tease. “Freddie Glinch tied my tennis shoes together in second grade, and I burn, I pine, I perish - ”

Bucky huffs, and pinches your leg - squealing protests, water splashing - somehow, in that little tussle, sweet lips find sweet lips. Strawberries and champagne and soap and you - it doesn’t take long for wandering hands to get hot, and he barely manages to pull away long enough to choke,

“Bed?”

Your eyes glitter with silken promises. “Uh-huh.”

The drain is pulled. Towels hastily drawn across soaking skin - fresh and soft and damp will have to do. And without warning you nudge Bucky against the counter, lowering yourself as he sucks in a breath - even in the humid bathroom, your mouth is so hot against him. So perfectly velvet drawing him up, and his fingers clamp around the edge of the counter -

Short breaths. No breaking counters.

Blood boils in his veins, pools in his belly. Eyes squeeze shut as his legs tremor - your hands swipe a path up and down them, but it doesn’t help. He’s shivering. He’s not gonna last, he’s -

Cool air hits his damp skin. Bucky chokes.

“I was - ” he babbles, feeling stupid and his throat think. “Baby, honey, I was - ”

“I know.” Oh, that smirk - your fingers clench lightly into his chest as you stand - naked skin on his, and his hands grip tight into your hips to pull you close. You are tantalizing soft against his throbbing arousal. “You like that?” Your coo fans warm breath on his face, and Bucky wrinkles his nose.

“No,” he grumbles.

“Too bad. There’s more to come.”

A pause. “Well - I like the sound of that.”

“If you’re good…” Your index finger trails along his bare chest, to trace along his collar bone. With your eyes lowered so daringly, Bucky can see your eyelashes splayed out so pretty. He swallows. “Maybe...maybe I could let you repay the favor?” Eyes up. Sparkling mischief. Smug mischief. Typical.

“Can I repay the favor now?” he asks, a little hoarse as you shift your weight, soft skin grinding into his crotch in the worst - and best - way.

“Oh! That would be very kind of you,” you tease. “But it is your birthday - ”

“Then let me choose my dinner.” This with a growl, and as your lips curl into a delighted smile, he lifts you by the hips to carry you out, your legs snug about his waist and your nose buried somewhere behind his ear. Little kisses, peppering ones.

He’s known you in a hundred beds, and he’ll know you in a thousand more - but there’s always something magic in the way your body twists against his. In the flutterings of your movements, in the surge of sweet that always comes when he’s tasting you and you’re moaning for him so pretty.

He can hear your heart racing. A wicked thought, and devilish desire - and when your breath hitches, when your heart pounds - he pulls away, letting your whimper fade into the air. Very nearly a cry of distress. Gives him the chance to smirk, as indignant fingers find his on the bedspread, and he can’t help giving a low laugh.

“What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander,” Bucky teases, and the echo of a voice in his head - his grandmother, only gives the tiniest squeeze to his heart.

“Well maybe you should give me your sauce and be done with it,” you tell him crossly. Brows drawn, this cruder-than-usual comment makes him laugh even louder. You’re wriggling against him, pulling him up - he allows this, dipping his head to kiss you fierce and wanting, and your fingers dig into his backside.

“No,” he decides, and pulls away. Grins down at your horrified expression. And laughs a little, too. “You always get what you want, you know that, Firecracker?” he jokes, propping himself up on his fists - he lifts one hand to pinch your wrinkled nose. “Live like the rest of us for once.”

A humming kind of moment, with tension and uncertainty - you know he’s teasing, right? - and then with a woeful, drawn-out grown, you cover your face with a hand, and roll out from beneath him, onto your stomach. Pouting.

So. Darn. Cute.

“I still love you, sweetheart, baby,” Bucky murmurs, not able to keep the tremors of humor from his voice. He drapes himself along your bare body, pressing consolatory kisses up your spine. Cradles you in between his shoulders; trapping, but with affection. And some amusement.

“Do you?”

A pitiful question. Did he mention cute already? His lips find your hairline, breathing in echoes of that floral soap clinging so pretty to your skin.

“Oh, yeah,” Bucky replies. “Definitely.”

“Well, I’m reconsidering.”

He bursts into laughter. Runs his hands up your arms, trying to get you to look at him - no luck.

“Well, gee, baby,” he teases softly. “You can dish it out all day but you can’t take it, huh?”

Finally - pursed lips and glittering eyes stare over at him. Tousled hair. “I was trying to tease you,” you tell him, huffing a little. “Your birthday present.”

“And what if I just want you? What if I want you to enjoy it more than I want to?”

A slow blink. A thousand thoughts he sees in your eyes - you settle for speaking just one. “Compromise? We enjoy it together.” A wiggle of your hips - with his leg slung between yours, he chokes back a groan to feel you against him.

“Okay,” Bucky says hoarsely. “Okay.”

With your head tilted - it’s easy to lapse back into kissing, even in this position. He cradles your head, you arch your back. Hands over your waist, to your hips - and you need no encouragement to lift them.

“Bucky…” Hazy eyes, swollen lips. He feels about the same, breathing ragged in his throat and coming fast. This is new, this position - but he thinks he’s gonna like it, and he suspects you won’t want to waste time maneuvering around. So he plants his knees between yours, and lifts himself up to position himself…

He doesn’t like not being able to kiss you. But the gorgeous expanse of your back, flexing with aroused impatience. The little moan from your lips, half-muffled, as he guides himself in -

Bucky stutters out a gasp.

“This is - ” he says breathlessly, but he can’t stop now, and the bedcovers are bunched in your fists. Spine flexing. “This is - this is - ”

He can’t even form a thought, let alone speak one. It’s just your silky heat pulling him in, clenching around him as flames lick at his veins. Runs his hands all over your skin, everywhere he can reach - you move with him, and without thinking - some instinct, perhaps, he lifts your shoulders, and you rise so that your back is pressed to his chest.

Oh, it’s like the club in Johannesburg.

That’s about all he can do for a thought. Keeps thrusting. Buries his nose into your hair, and your fingers are fisting into his, those sounds from your lips so pretty but so dirty - begging. Pleading. For him.

It’s a bit of an awkward angle; but he keeps up. His muscles bunching, yours rubbing against his. Sweat mingling now - he can feel a trickle down your back and along his chest, but it doesn’t matter if it’s yours or his or -

You clench tight around him - like the warmest silken fist as a drawn-out moan vibrates against his lips on your throat, and he feels himself exploding before he can even think -

Chests heaving in tandem. Long breaths, desperate for air. Kisses salty now with sweat, and the tiniest giggles. Oh, you got what you wanted, didn’t you? Bucky chortles against your skin - and then grunts as you wiggle against him.

“Ow,” he whimpers. “Hey, I’m sensitive.”

“Oh - sorry.”

He doesn’t really believe you. It’s that tone in your voice; the utterly unrepentant sign that, yes - you’d gotten what you’d wanted. With a growl he wraps an arm around your waist, pulling you backwards as he flops onto the bed, getting a laugh for his efforts, and your hair in his mouth.

Now it’s time to maneuver - you curl into his side, lips ready for a kiss - willingly granted - and his thumb strokes the outline of your dimples as you beam.

“Cake?” you chirp.

Bucky laughs and laughs - and this is what he remembers of birthdays. Laughter and cake and good company.

His ma would’ve never let him eat cake in bed - but it’s a special occasion, you insist, and he won’t complain. He doesn’t complain when you feed him off your own fork, when you smear some on his face on purpose just to lick off. Or when, after the cake is gone and the lights are off, you love him once more in the dark, a silhouette in the moonlight as your hips grind into his and you look like the prettiest picture above him that he’s ever seen.

“You know,” you mumble into his shoulder some time later, while his flesh finger tips are drinking in the warmth of the skin on your back, with you tucked up against him. “We have a mission tomorrow.”

He chortles. “We’ll worry about it tomorrow. Thank you, sweetheart - for the birthday. For being with me.”

And even sleepy and bleary as you are, the hint of coyness in your response has him smiling: “Oh, it’s my pleasure.”

Mission. Right. Morning.

Well, not too early - gotta wake up first, and Bucky is a little short on breath when you finish that job you’d started the previous night. Emerge the blankets looking smug as his face is all flushed, and he kisses you wildly before his conscience kicks in.

Mission.

The plan is simple.

A few minutes of fiddling on your phone in a nearby café have the cameras looped. Then, you head into the west entrance to plant explosives - Bucky watches you go a little regretfully, hoisting his backpack further up on his shoulder before heading up to the rickety roof of a call center a quarter-mile down the street.

The businesses in this area are night-shift only - here, it’s nearly deserted. Makes it easy to set up his rifle unnoticed, perched behind a concrete cistern with a blue tarp flapping in the breeze.

His phone gives a single vibration in his pocket. Bucky peers around the cistern, muttering under his breath as his eyes scan the area. A slight south-westerly breeze; target 675 yards off…

This is no sniper’s dream, though he does smile to himself as he peers through the scope, remembering your laugh.

Another six-point-three seconds of calculations, and he pulls the trigger.

The rusted box nailed on top of the powerline pole sparks, and bursts.

The street goes quieter - Bucky can hear protests all up and down from various buildings, from tables outside cafés. Perfect. Another buzz in his pocket - success.

He packs up, and heads back down towards the warehouse.

The closer he gets, the more crowded it is - the workers have milled out of the factory, and a frazzled shift supervisor is calling for order in rapid Portuguese, “We’ll have everything up and running again soon!” - which, of course, is not true, but she doesn’t know that. Bucky leans back against the street light, hands in his pockets and baseball cap low. The excitement of the power outage keeps attention from him - that’s good.

A few minutes, and he checks his watch. You should be out by now.

His stomach twists.

One more minute. He gives you one more.

Then Bucky ducks into the indifferent crowd, and makes for the west entrance.

Open, of course. And deathly silent: without the main power on, the air is shut off and there comes no buzz from the security system. Once inside, he pauses, listening. Four heartbeats somewhere to the north, all faster than usual.

Briskly he sets off.

“Ow!” A voice he doesn’t recognize, through a thick door. He shoulders through, already gripping for the pistol inside his jacket -

No need. Bucky lets out a long breath, eyes scanning for you - standing with your arms crossed, above a pile of men gagged and hog-tied.

“How did you do that?” he asks blandly, and kicks the door shut behind him.

“Oh, please,” you brush this off - there’s a cut beneath your eye leaking red, and he frowns. “Getting men all tied up is a specialty of mine.”

“What about - ”

“We have time,” you tell him quickly. No speaking of the explosives. Not in front of these guys. Your eyes flit to Bucky. “I’m waiting for them to decide whether to tell me about the message they were sending out this morning.”

“A message, huh?” he drawls, stepping forward. Three pairs of terrified eyes - they know who he is. That’s good.

“For some guy named Claudio - ring a bell?” you ask.

“No.”

One of the men starts struggling in his bonds - an exchanged look with Bucky - he shrugs - and you crouch down to pull the gag from the man’s mouth.

“He knows him,” the man gasps, wide eyes on Bucky. “He does. Knew him in Siberia. In Warsaw.”

“Warsaw?” Your brow is pinched. “Hydra drew out of Warsaw over two years ago. I blew up their base myself.”

The man’s eyes turn back to you. Full of horror.

“Could anyone else have survived Warsaw?” Bucky asks. “I did.”

“Yeah, because I saved you,” you enunciate - gaze sparkling as you glance over at him. “There wasn’t anyone else cute enough lying around to pick up.”

“I’m so flattered.”

“He went by another name!” the man interrupts. He’s shaking head to foot. And his eyes go up to the ceiling - ah. No wonder they’re terrified - Bucky can see the blinking red lights of your triggering device, rigged with a fair amount of explosives. Two minutes left.

“Are you going to tell me?” you ask him, all sweet.

“The - the, uh - Enforcer.”

Bucky’s blood runs cold. Silence - apart from the soft beeping. Then you shove the gag back in his mouth, straightening as you take a breath, walking the two steps to Bucky’s side.

“Another mission?” you ask him, under your breath.

Numbly he nods - can’t speak, not with a hundred memories of the Enforcer’s cruelty stealing his breath. Stealing his memories, scrambling his brains, torturing his body. Ordering him. The wounds are nearly as deep as his bones; freezing muscles as you try to hold onto his hand, your lips moving but it’s just a rushing in his ears - water over his head, knives on his skin, burning, burning, burning -

A sharp strike of skin on skin - your palm, cupping his cheek. Bucky blinks stupidly down at your worried face.

“We gotta go,” you say - is that what you’ve been saying all along? The men are panicking now in their heap, kicking and flailing and trying without success to squirm out of their ties. The clock above - twenty-two seconds.

Bucky grabs your hand back. Reality is painful, jagged - but the memories are worse, and all he knows is that he’s following you.

Back in the street, the first clouds of pale smoke are filtering into the sky with bright blue and green sparks - gasps and outcries from onlookers. The warehouse shudders, but it grows quiet the further away you lead him. Sun bright above, air clogged with diesel and smoke and human stink and whiffs of coffee and food and animals and -

The dimness of the hotel room swallows him. The blinds are drawn. His backpack pulled from his shoulder, set aside. Are his ears still rushing? Yes, they must be. And your hands on his face - burning hot. Or maybe he’s gone cold.

“Bucky,” you say.

He doesn’t respond.

“Bucky. Can you sit?”

Sit? Yeah, he can do that. Guided by your hands into a chair by the desk. Desk. You’d put together the bombs on that desk. He’d sat beside you - the bed has been neatly made, too. He’d slept in that bed. With your sweet breath on your face, chasing away the nightmares. He’d loved you real good there, too - and you’d loved him back, and in the bathroom -

His birthday.

Glittering eyes gazing up at him. He snaps back, sucking in a breath as he registers the mournful worry in your face.

“I’m sorry,” he babbles, throat hoarse. His fingers clench on his own knees; your curl over them, but gently. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what - I don’t know why - ”

“It’s fine,” you assure him. A kiss to his metal knuckles, and he groans.

“The Enforcer is alive,” Bucky mumbles, squeezing his eyes shut. “They’d said so in Italy - do you remember? I didn’t believe...I thought they were just tryna mess with my mind, but now - ”

“Bucky,” you interrupt again. Clasping his hands so nice. He can open his eyes again - drinks in the sight of your pretty, familiar face. The face of his rescue, of his salvation. “Bucky, we’re gonna get him for real this time,” you tell him, soft and firm and all sincerity. “I couldn’t get him alone - I need you. We can do this together better than we could have ever done it apart.”

That’s true. Missions are so better with you.

“We’ll get him,” he repeats, and even though the words are harsh in his throat, they come with a rumbling satisfaction in his gut. “We will.”

Your smile is a little terrifying - but since the threat isn’t for him, Bucky loves it. “We will.”
