Trigger warnings: abuse, murder
Azra was raised on contradictions. She lived in paradise, but her house was a nightmare. She loved fairytales and happily-ever-afters, but every day she saw proof of how it could go wrong. Her father was a cruel, controlling man, and her mother was too obedient to ever think about leaving. The man never laid a hand on Azra, treating her as His Little Princess, but as the years wore on, Azra watched her mother shrink, becoming a shell of herself.
Azra found her sanctuary in the house next door — the Peters and their daughter who became like family. At their house, Azra no longer felt like she had to retreat inside herself, and the more time she spent there, the more she blossomed. She would always be more on the reserved side, but in a peaceful environment, she had the freedom to explore.
By the time she was 16, she was doing almost everything in her power to stay out of her own home. She joined clubs, went to parties, and slept at the Peters most night, all the while turning a blind eye as her father's anger escalated. And then it was too late — her father killed her mother in a murder-suicide. When confronted with the option of going back to Turkiye to live with her aunt, Azra instead opted to live with the Peters full-time, with them taking on the responsibility of being her legal guardians.
She decided to go to school to study medicine, and while in med school, she met boy named Dylan. She fell hard, and before she knew it, she was introducing him to her family. He fit into her life perfectly, growing especially close with Azra's sister/best friend Maeve. There were some bumps in the road, but when he asked her to marry him, of course she said yes.
Maeve's sudden excommunication definitely threw her for a loop, but Azra never thought there was anything suspicious about the timing. She was no stranger to mental health crises and figured Maeve needed some time to herself, and she'd come back to her whenever she was ready.
When Dylan got a new contract in Woodside, Azra decided to move with him, taking a fellowship at the local hospital. She is still slowly planning her wedding, but as the months drag on, she is finding neither she nor her fiance are making much effort to push it through.
