Global Holcim Awards Bronze ex aequo for Sustainable oasis upgrade
The sustainable oasis upgrade in M’hammid El Ghizlane, Morocco, was honored with the Global Holcim Award Bronze. The project application was named "Cultural Interlude: A self-sustaining center to preserve tribal cultural heritage" by the architect Aziza Chaouni from Aziza Chaouni Projects, who has offices in Fez, Morocco and in Canada. We are very proud to have contributed to the sustainability of this project by developing the concepts collaboratively in a workshop with the design team.
Press realease text: The oasis in the Drâa Valley in southern Morocco is losing its inhabitants, and along with them its heritage. This project aims to help preserve local life and culture by creating a self-sustaining cultural center in the town. It incorporates traditional construction with appropriate technologies such as solar chimneys and solar-powered geothermal systems along with passive systems like composting toilets and rainwater harvesting for both domestic and irrigation purposes. “The project lies in the Sahara Desert at the fringe of an arid oasis acutely lacking water resources, so it has no choice but to be sustainable,” explains prizewinner Aziza Chaouni. “It needs to generate its own energy, collect its own water, and distribute it in a very efficient manner to make use of every single drop of water.” The Global Holcim Awards jury recognized the laudable intention to address the issue of tribal-community displacement due to the threat of climate change by suggesting a design solution that enables people to remain rooted in their hometown and maintain their traditions. “This project combines many different elements into a whole that serves a bigger purpose,” sums up Marilyne Andersen, Head of the Academic Committee of the Holcim Foundation.

C. Fondata nell’859 a.

Founded by a Muslim woman, the University of Al Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, opened its doors in 859. Its library has been restored during the last three years by another woman, Canadian-Moroccan architect Aziza Chaouni. A wing will be open to the general public later this year. The library houses a collection of 4,000 rare books and ancient arabic manuscripts written by renowned scholars of the region. According to the AP, the manuscripts include a 9th century version of the Quran and a manuscript on Islamic jurisprudence written by philosopher Averroes. The University complex was founded as a mosque by Fatima Al-Fihri, who inherited her merchant father’s fortunes after the family moved from Al Qayrawan, or modern day Tunisia. In “The golden age of Islam,” (French, video) a documentary that aired on France 5 Channel, Al-Fihri was described as a young woman fascinated by knowledge and curious about the world. She oversaw the construction of the mosque, and until her later years, attended lectures by reputed scholars who travelled to teach at the mosque school.

Outdoor Amphitheater Rendering
Modern music activities typically reach youth from M’hamid and from Tagounite, while traditional music activities include more than 70 youth from more than eight villages. There are no such activities offered elsewhere in southeastern Morocco, and due to the extraordinary efforts of our team, we are able to realize positive change in M’hamid El Ghizlane and beyond.
“This will be the first construction of its kind in southern Morocco. Playgrounds for children, music classrooms, a studio, outdoor amphitheater, an ecolodge residency, all thermally comfortable anytime throughout the year” shares Aziza, Architect and Joudour Sahara Co-Founder. Constructing Solutions
Aziza Chaouni Projects has designed inspired facility solutions to lead a regional fight against climate change while also promoting the practice and preservation of music.

Depicted here are the renderings for a multi-purpose water reservoir, combining vernacular techniques, innovative architecture, and efficient use of space in the above ground chamber, a cool space to gather and create during the hot summer season.
Construction of the water reservoir is currently underway. Help bring these facilities to thousands of youth across southern Morocco. Support the Award-winning rammed earth complex to house Joudour Sahara cultural and environmental programming.
In just a few clicks you can either donate to this project, with 100% of donations going directly to support the building of these facilities. Follow joudoursahara.org/architecture/ to be a part of this change.

U is for University: Fatima Al Fihri The world's oldest continually operating University? Not Cambridge (1209), nor Oxford (1096), nor Bologna (1088) - It's the University of Al Quaraouiyine in Fes, Morocco. It was founded in 859 by Fatima Al Fihri. She not only introduced "higher education" but also the concept that one could earn "degrees" in various fields of studies. In 2016 the Moroccan architect Aziza Chaouni was enlisted to renovate the world's oldest library, part of the University.
