So!YoOn! - zZCity [Azit Live Session]
Some very chill dream pop with swanky melodic guitar riffs and hypnotizing vocals. Really like her voice, its gritty but soft somehow, difficult to describe but very attention grabbing. Some interesting repetitive verses towards the end keep things interesting and the live band crushes it.
I’m curious to hear the whole album when it comes out on the 21st, the preview sounds cool, the cover art is terrifying and its got some good features like Jvcki Wai and SUMIN.

my notes on nell's album moments in between (2021) ✨
did i really spend an hour listening to this album while playing at being music critic? yes! just my humble opinions...i know nothing about music except what i like and don't like
note: i knew about crash and duet being pre-release singles and wasn't impressed by them when they came out at the time, so i already did not have the greatest opinions of those songs
crash: felt like filler...i am so sorry
파랑 주의보 calling: this song was not what I expected it to be but in a good way..the opening bit kept me guessing what the chorus was going to sound like but this was a very solid no-frills nell song which i'm sure some people would call boring but i personally dig
don't say you love me: i thought this was going to belong to the fillers gang based on the opening but no…when the beat drops after the first chorus it gets better and I love that little twinkly piano thing near the end of the song..lyrics are very sad and on-brand for kim jongwan ("you probably can't imagine/they only keep growing uncontrollably/the waves of longing/in a wildly raging sea" like ok..who hurt you)
유희 u-hee: i wasn’t sure if they were doing double title tracks but between this and beautiful jeopardy, i liked this a lot more because i just like their anthemic stuff more. and the guitar riffs in this are so catchy! i cannot get it out of my head..i also really like the lyrics and rhythm of the ending refrain also (they just seemed more interesting than your typical nell fare) i guess it's a little similar to their collab they did with groovyroom but only a little bit... also cannot believe their azit live session of this song has more videos than the actual music video…
don’t hurry up: i really like the lyrics of this but i want to skip this song every time it comes up on my playlist (the irony!) definitely reminiscent of their sound from their healing process album but i thought it just wasn't up there with limitation or yearning..sunggyu needs to do a cover of this tho because this seems like the kind of song he’d cover
위로 危路 beautiful jeopardy: cool that they got the actor from the day before to do this mv and i got really excited because i thought we would get a continuation of the story…all us nell fans played ourselves!! this song made me feel depressed but hopeful at the same time and i thought the mv matched the sound of it really well in that i couldn’t figure out what was happening..also another anthem instrumental moment after the second chorus!! what more could i ask for!
duet: another filler-sounding track but i am not ashamed to say i listened to this non-stop for a week when it was released two days before my birthday in 2020)
말해줘요 part of me: a sad love song..when kim jongwan sings the chorus line "oh please, don't leave don't leave/i want you to be a part of me" all i can think is "ok"
정야 wishful thinking: this wasn't my favourite at first but after several listens, i have decided it reigns supreme for me. the instrumental brings me back to when they’d just released the third instalment of the gravity trilogy..although i do want to say that i feel like the vibe of the song and the lyrics do clash because the melody is so like otherworldly and spacey but the lyrics are about such a grounded and simple love like “it’s really raining a lot, o worry whether you took an umbrella” etc. etc. but yes. still love this song
sober: honestly it might because this is the last song on the album and the one I’ve listened to the least but this left the weakest impression on me...love the rain sound in the background which is a very nell thing to do and this song just keeps getting better and better…it’s more interesting than crash and the guitar at 3:12 reminds me of something from 못 mot’s non-linear album (which is an album i need to revisit, wow!)
i think their colors in black was more interesting but moments in between has a lot of the things that made their songs popular to the mainstream audience..it’s also nice to see that there’s a lot more content around this album and i am enjoying watching their lives and interviews 🌝

Hi! I'm writing some bilingual and foreign characters (woo!) and one of them is an Irish immigrant. I'm trying really hard to use some of the Munster dialect as a way to show his accent and stuff, but it's really hard. Do you have any advice on writing accents or specific dialects?
DO’S & DON’TS OF WRITING ACCENTS & DIALECTS:
Thanks for question, anon!
First, I would just say that when it comes to writing accents, especially using unconventional spelling, tread carefully. This is for two main reasons:
1) It can annoy the reader.
Let’s look at an example:
“We fill up oor lives wi shite, things like careers and relationships tae delude oorsels that it isnae aw totally pointless.” (from Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting)
Now, no offence to Irvine Welsh (or Scottish Twitter, for that matter). If it’s important to you to represent your own way of speaking, that’s fine. However, you’re really asking a lot of your readers here. Unconventional spelling slows down the reader beyond what many will tolerate, and you risk people either giving up on the book if there’s a lot of it, or skipping over certain characters’ dialogue and missing important information.
2) It can exoticize your character and perpetuate stereotypes.
Here’s the thing. No matter where you’re from, you have an accent. No one is accent neutral, and also, no one pronounces every word exactly as it’s written. For example, if I said the last part of the previous sentence out loud and wrote it down as I said it, I would write:
ev’ry werd exactly azit’s writt’n
For reference, I speak in a standard American accent. Have you ever seen this accent written out phonetically like this?
When you write certain characters’ dialogue to show an accent and not other characters, it can portray some characters as “normal” and some as Other, strange, or “talking funny.” It can also perpetuate stereotypes about certain groups, such as being poorly educated or unrefined. You definitely want to watch out for this.
Try these strategies:
1) Pick a few words you want to spell unconventionally, and stick to them.
Again, I would really recommend limiting your use of unconventional spelling, but if you do it sparingly, you can usually get away with it. Pick a handful of words that you feel show the character’s accent when spelled phonetically, and stick to that. Also, make sure to stay consistent in using those spellings throughout that character’s dialogue, unless changing the way they speak is part of the story.
2) Name or describe the accent when they first speak.
If you introduce a character and describe them as having an Irish accent, most readers will know what that sounds like and will read that character’s dialogue with an Irish accent from there on.
If you want to describe it further, do a little research into the qualities of the particular language or accent. For example, Irish accents are often described as lyrical, musical, or melodic (fun fact: this is because of pitch changes!).
3) Use idioms and vocabulary.
(Reminder: “idioms” are figures of speech–expressions that are not meant literally, but have a culturally understood meaning, such as saying someone doing really well in a game is, “on fire.”)
Rather than asking your readers to slog through dialogue where every other word is spelled unconventionally, show their background through the actual words they use.
If you’re writing an Irish character, research differences between Irish English and whichever branch of English you use. For example, I would call the compartment in the back of a car a trunk, but an Ireland, it’s called a boot. What other words are different? You should be able to find many articles/lists of these online.
You can also use some common idioms or expressions from that region. However, don’t go ham (see, there’s an idiom!), or it can seem exaggerated and comical (for some reason, Sandy Cheeks’ Texas-isms spring to mind).
4) Consider other factors that influence speech.
The way people talk isn’t only influenced by country or region. Get more specific, and consider different aspects of your character’s environment. For example, how did their parents speak? What socio-economic class were they born into? Did they go to school? Where?
From there, think about how these factors combine with the character’s personality. Let’s say the character was born into a wealthy, upper-class family. Does the character blend in with their family or stick out in some way? Do they want to blend in with their family, or do they want to reject the standard? If so, are they successful?
5) Focus on the character’s individuality.
One of the pitfalls of writing accents is it can take up so much of your focus that it ends up consuming the character’s personality. This can happen for both you and your reader.
For you, the writer, you can quickly forget the nuances you wanted to give your character when all your concentration is on figuring out how the character would pronounce each word.
For the reader, it can become all they see. If the reader is just trying to decipher what the character is saying, they can miss the actual substance of the characters’ words.
A character needs to be more than an accent or dialect, or they’re not going connect with your readers. Be sure to describe the character’s individual voice, as well as how it changes with their moods.
For example, do they have a deep, gruff voice or a soft, airy voice? Is their voice booming with anger, or are they mumbling their words? Do they speak more casually, or do they love to show off their command of “proper” grammar?
Not everyone from a particular area is going to sound the same. Give your character unique personality, and let that be reflected in the way they talk.
———————————————————————————–
Finally, in any case where you’re writing outside your social/cultural identity, I would definitely suggest finding beta readers from those backgrounds who are willing to read your story and give you feedback.
If you’re writing about characters of a marginalized identity (that you don’t belong to), hiring a sensitivity reader is a great investment. Sensitivity readers not only speak from personal experience, but are usually very aware of the common issues in how their communities are portrayed (stereotypes, harmful tropes, etc).
I hope that helped!
~Kat
