Wow, Brookfield Zoo has huge plans over the coming years! Huge renovations that are actually updates! I was already so ecstatic about the renovations for Tropic World (which will be called Tropical Forests when it's done) and I'm glad that's one of the first projects on their list (already in the works, with an expected completion in summer of 2025), it was so greatly needed. Tropic World was a huge investment that was basically outdated when it was built, such a sad waste of resources. I'm so happy it was towards the top of their list to update. (On a gorilla note, Brookfield's one of the last two AZA accredited zoos that currently has no outdoor area for their gorillas, with this update the gorillas will be able to go outside!)
It does look like they may be planning on having elephants again, which I have mixed feelings on. Elephants are really hard to care for properly, which is one of the reasons fewer zoos are keeping them than there used to be. They had elephants when I was a kid, but the group dwindled and from what I remember, after the death of the matriarch, they decided to move any remaining elephants to another zoo rather than bring in more elephants. I think it was a welfare-focused decision so I'm cautiously hopeful about the plans they've drawn up and the resources they've grown to make things ready to have resident elephants again.
So far this big investment/plan seems like actual good modernization and updates!
(Disclaimer that I'm not a zoo expert and don't intend to come off that way. I volunteer at a zoo and have varying levels of higher insight than the average guest because of that and because of connections through my special interest in gorillas but I'm by no means an expert. These are just personal, non-professional opinions.)

Kisses and Sand Castles | Z.H.
im so happy exams are finally done and now i can go back to writing hehz anyway enjoy!
In which Zach joins Y/N's family to a vacation in Hawaii.
warning(s): fluff asf, zach being zach in a couple of minutes, cursing(uh ok maybe once)
word count: 1893
a/n: requested by anon
Y/N
"Hawaii, here we come!" Aza, your seven-year-old sister, cheered as you arrived in Hawaii.
It was your summer break when your parents decided to visit your grandparents who are based in Hawaii, particularly in Maui. You were too excited to have this vacation especially since your boyfriend went with you. You and Zach have been dating for a year and a half now, and this is only the first vacation you had with him after their tour.
It didn't take long when you, Zach and your family went to the hotel you were staying for the next couple of days. You and Zach entered to the room you both were sharing with, seeing the beautiful view of Hawaii.
"This is just breath-taking," you were too amazed with the scenery as you opened the door with a porch, it has a table with two chairs next to it.
"You are more breath-taking, babe." his raspy voice echoed in the room, but later on, you felt his arms wrapped around your waist hugging you from the back. He rests his chin on your shoulder then placing a kiss on your jaw.
"You are unbelievable, Zach." you grinned.
"I know." he muttered as he keeps brushing his lips to your skin which sends shivers.
"Okay, let's just head to the beach." you interrupted him from what he is doing, releasing from his arms and going in to the room.
"Fuck, Y/N! You just ruined our moment." he exclaimed as he pouts walking in the room, which made you laugh so hard as you open your luggage.
You walk up to him, smiling at him and leaned up to plant a kiss on his lips. You said, "I love you."
You and Zach changed into more appropriate clothes for the beach. Both of you decided to go to the sea shore first, because you didn't want to waste a time without enjoying this moment. The beach wasn't crowded so there were only quite a few people.
As you walk hand-in-hand with Zach looking for a perfect spot at the beach, there were few fans spotted the both of you. They took pictures with Zach and surprisingly, they asked you if it's okay to have a picture with you too. It was really surprising for you, because even after a year of dating Zach which was a couple of months ago, there are still hates and threats for you. But this was new. You and Zach bid goodbyes to those lovely girls as you continue to look for a spot.
Zach settled the tapestry he got you for your seventeenth birthday a month ago. You both sat their enjoying the sound of the waves and the beautiful view.
"I want to live here, though." you said out of the blue, as he leans back supported by his arms.
"Yeah, me too. But..." he paused, "It's really hard for my part because it's really far from LA, you know, all these meetings and recording sessions."
"Then don't, maybe you can have a rest house here." you suggested, "But, why would you want to live here if you know how hassle it can be."
He takes your hand and plays with it, "Of course, babe. If you want to live here, then I'm living here as well because we'll be having our family in the future and I don't want to be far from you."
You were too astonished and dumbfounded by his words, he was thinking his future with you. It was something that melted your heart away. What did I do to deserve him? You asked.
"Oh, wow." you finally found words to say. You were still surprised by what he said.
He chuckles as he pinches your cheek, "I love it when you zoned-out. You're so cute."
"Okay, I'm just saying that... I was surprised that you were thinking your future with me while I'm here, just thinking how did I deserve a boyfriend like you. But, seriously though, you'll do that for me?"
You were vocal to him about your thoughts because you hate hiding things from him even if it's only petty things, but for him, it matters. You felt that you do not have only a boyfriend but also a best friend.
"Of course, Y/N. I love you so much that I'd do anything for you." his voice is so damn sexy, I feel attacked. "And I was also thinking the same thing, how did I deserve a stunning and smart-ass girlfriend like you. You are way too much for me."
"Thanks for calling me smart." you laugh and so did he. "Come here," he gestured you to get closer to him and you did, he wraps an arm around your shoulder as you rest your head on his shoulder. "You want us to start our family here then that would be cool, everybody wants to live here so why don't we?"
Here he goes again.
You glared at him as he laughs, you grinned at him as he continues to do so. You admired every inch of this boy, you know that there is no boy like him that would make your heart skip a beat. You love him way too much.
"I love you, Zach." you looked at his beautiful eyes.
"I love you too, Y/N." he looked at your eyes as well but it went down to your lips. He smiled before he tilted his head and leaned in.
Even though you already kissed him a million times but you can still feel those butterflies exploding inside you. You felt like you were at a concert because of how hyped you've become, that's still how you feel whenever you kiss him. Like how it was from the first time.
"Uh? Zach, why are you eating Y/N's face?" a little girl's voice interrupted us, seeing Aza standing there with an ice cream. You and Zach looked at each other stopping yourselves from laughing.
"Uh... I was hungry?" Zach answered which made you widen your eyes and hitted his arm, then he started laughing.
"No, don't listen to Zach." you stood up picking up your sister then kissing her cheek, "How about we make sand castles?" you suggested which made her excited.
Zach
Zach, Y/N and Aza build sand castles. They would compete of who built the best castle, but Zach was too lazy to make his castle more castle-looking one and he ended up babysitting Archie, the youngest sibling of Y/N which is only one-year-old. Y/N was really good in building one, she said, it was her favorite thing to do in the beach. As for Aza, she finds it unfair that her sister's castle was more beautiful than hers. So in the end, Y/N decided to gave up her magical kingdom to Aza.
It was something that made him fall for Y/N so hard, she is genuinely kind and thoughtful. She would put others first before herself.
"Zach," a familiar female voice approached which made Zach glance up. It was Allison, Y/N's mom.
"Mrs. Y/L/N," Zach acknowledged her while he plays with Archie and his toys. Allison sat beside Zach as they were in their seats having a lovely barbeque grilling with Y/N's dad.
"I appreciate everything you do for Y/N." she smiled genuinely as she gazed at Y/N from afar with Aza who is continuing in building a castle. "For making her happy and for loving her. Thank you, Zach."
Zach smiled at the mother of the love of her life, it was nice and heart-warming, he thought. That he would be appreciated by his girlfriend's mom. "Well, I guess that's when you know you're in love. Making sure that she is happy makes me happy."
Allison embraced Zach, she loves this boy so much. Especially how he makes her daughter happy, they support their relationship because they trust Zach and they know that he won't do a thing that would break their trust. They know that he won't hurt Y/N.
Y/N
Two days had passed in their vacation in Hawaii, you and your family finally decided to see your grandparents. You are on your way to their house which takes a ten minute drive from the hotel you checked-in.
Zach admitted how nervous he is in meeting your grandparents. Little did he know, that your grandparents were too gushed to see him because they listen to Why Don't We's songs. They would only call you to just complement how beautiful Zach and the other boys' voices are and how talented they are.
Your dad pulled over as you arrived to your grandparents' house. Zach was quiet on your side so you held his hand. "Don't worry, they love you."
You've got to admit that it made him calm and made him less nervous. Zach never let go of your hand until you got inside.
"Y/N!" your grandmother calls out then you ran to her and hugged her, your parents and younger siblings hugged them too. "Look how stunning you are," she cupped your cheek and you smiled at her. You also went up to your grandfather and gave him a hug.
"So, where's the famous Zach Herron?" your grandfather asked excitedly, you gazed at him who is standing from afar. You extended your hand to him and he walked towards you.
"This is Zach, G-pa." you smiled at your grandfather. Zach slowly extended his hand to him.
"It's an honor to meet you, sir." he formaly said.
"No need to be formal, son." he widens his arms for a hug which surpises Zach so much and he hugs your grandfather. "It's nice to finally meet you."
"You are such a good-looking young man, Zach." your grandmother said and she hugs him as well, "I've listened to your songs and it's really good!" she cheerfully said.
"I'm glad you liked it, I really appreciate it. Thank you so much."
You can see into Zach's face how grateful he is. How your relatives appreciate him. Zach got along with your grandparents and few relatives because of how sociable and how goofy he gets.
"Ah, I remember when we were in ages like them. How in love we are with each other." your grandmother reminisced as you all gather in the living room.
"Of course, I remember it clearly too." your grandfather responded.
"Always remember, do not let others be in control of your relationship. Even if you are both still young, keep each other. Do not let them interfere your love from each other." your grandmother said.
It was true, you thought. Others would say that you and Zach are too young to be in love. But love doesn't have an age bracket. Loving is free. And everybody deserves to be loved, especially those who keeps extending their love to others.

On this World Frog Day, let’s take the time to celebrate the outstanding diversity of frogs around the globe. Amphibians are an important indicator species for healthy environments and a vital part of the food chain. But in many parts of the world, frog populations are declining, and many species are on the brink of extinction.
As Director of Conservation Programs for Roger Williams Park Zoo, I see the threats that face wildlife every day. Frogs are no exception. Habitat loss, over-collection for the pet trade, the introduction of non-native invasive species, road mortality, and now an infectious fungal disease have all led to what scientists are calling a global amphibian crisis.
RWP Zoo has been committed to frog conservation since the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) deemed 2007 “The Year of the Frog.” It became my job to see what our zoo could do to help with this crisis. Growing up, I was always fascinated with amphibians and reptiles, so this task was important not only to our institution, but to me personally.
I took this ball and ran, and since 2007, our work has contributed to the conservation of some of the world’s most critically endangered frog species. I traveled first to Panama in 2007, where habitat loss and the fungal disease were wiping out populations of frogs at an alarming rate. For many years, I worked with in-country partners to set up invertebrate breeding cultures to feed some of the most endangered Panamanian frogs being bred at rescue centers. The rescue centers were built to keep these frogs from going extinct, and at the time, were the only hope for many species in Panama and around the world.
Our work there led to our current partnership with the San Antonio Zoo and Austral University in Valdivia, Chile. This project aims to set up labs in Chile for the captive breeding of critically endangered Chilean amphibians and the insect cultures needed to feed them. Many of the species we are and will be working with are endemic to Chile and found nowhere else in the world. These frogs are seriously threatened with extinction due to habitat loss from logging and agriculture, the introduction of non-native trout for sport fishing, and disease.
In January of this year, Dante Fenolio from the San Antonio Zoo Center for Conservation & Research and I traveled to Chile to oversee the delivery and setup of the first component of our lab complex. We also visited forested sites that are home to the only remaining populations of some of the most endangered species of Chilean frogs. We will concentrate on augmenting these populations and creating new populations with frogs raised in the labs.
While Rhode Island is not experiencing amphibian declines at this time, RWP Zoo offers an important opportunity for you to make a difference and contribute to amphibian conservation in our own backyards. FrogWatch is a citizen science program that uses volunteers to help biologists keep an eye on the health of our local populations of frogs and toads in neighborhood ponds and swamps.
Volunteers are taught to identify frog calls at a training session and commit to visiting an amphibian habitat once a week throughout the spring and summer to listen for calling frogs and toads. Data that is collected is shared with a national database of frog populations, local students, land managers, and state biologists. Trainings this year will be held on March 31 and April 6.
Together we can make our planet better for us and the species we share it with! HAPPY WORLD FROG DAY!

Against my better judgement I commented on a post where people said that Chendra the pygmy elephant at Oregon zoo should be in the wild. I encouraged them to look up her story because she was from the wild, but was removed when found orphaned and shot in the face at 4 years old. Then came this conversation...
This was the exact reason I had to delete Facebook for a while, too many arguments with people unwilling to see a different point of view. I'm in no way arguing that the Oregon Zoo had stellar elephant care practices in the past, but I am acknowledging that they have improved massively and their care practices are in accordance with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums-one of the most respected and regulated accreditation agencies. Unfortunately for Chendra and the other elephants listed, their problems occurred long before elephant care was well understood and long before the new habitat was built. Past damage cannot be undone, but it can be managed and that is exactly what the Oregon zoo is doing.
To prevent further foot, leg, and joint issues, the habitat is filled with a substrate specifically designed for elephants. The habitat went from 1.5 acres to 6 acres that is in an elongated pattern (instead of circular) to mimic how elephants walk long distances every day. To promote walking and foraging, the habitat has feeders that drop food in a random pattern at random times. This, along with spontaneous training and enrichment sessions, also helps pull Chendra out of her stereotypic behavior of swaying and pacing. AZA hire experts in their fields when it comes to veterinary care and Zoo keepers, and the aninals have access to grocery store quality food and stellar healthcare. She has the opportunity to be social with the other herd members or get her own space, mimicking elephsnt social structures in the wild. The off habitat areas are also climate controlled to keep the elephants warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
I think it's just frustrating that the person was not reading (or at least not responding) to 90% of my points. And frustrating that I read the website they gave me but didn't look at anything I gave them.
I'm not saying that sanctuaries are bad but I think we have to stop thinking they are the answer. It's okay to recognize that each serve a purpose and each can abuse animals or provide stellar care. What's important is that the organization can recognize bad practices and improve on them, which I believe Oregon has done.

“HC” + dragons
Send me  “HC”  + a word and I’ll write a headcanon about it.
During the time of Valyria, it was common for dragonlord familiesto own multiple dragons. Vaedar’s family ( the Valarys ) had six oftheir own, all with their respective riders, by the names of Azaes( Vaedar’s dragon ), Earion ( his father’s ), Garaxes ( his mother’s), Vhaegon ( his sister’s ), Maexys ( his brother’s ) and Arryx ( hisgrandfather’s ). The creatures grew fast, like human children doduring their first years but unlike humans ( though their growth doesslow eventually), they don’t truly stop growing until their deaths (which usually takes a hundred years or so to happen ). There is noset lifespan for the dragons, some may die sooner than others.
Vaedar’smount was hatched ( being the second youngest of his family’s dragons) to him when he was a baby and so his bond with the dragon wasnurtured and it strengthens with the passing of the years, the twobeing quite close. His dragon has dark crimson scales but near hisbelly, the sails over his neck and head, and the ends of his wings, the crimson lightens and reflects a dark golden hue ( imagine Rhaegalbut dark red instead of green scales and a more golden hue instead ofthe bronze—I plan on photoshopping something sometime in the future). His teeth, claws and horns were black, his eyes were a fiery goldand his fire was orange with streaks of dark red, almost black.
Totame the more difficult and dangerous of the dragons, sometimesbinding spells were used but such was not the case with Vaedar andAzaes. He would use a whip during the first several flights until thedragon learned his commands and signals, afterwards it was no longernecessary. A small dragon horn that he could carry around was usedwhenever he was away, to blow it so that Azaes would come when calledwith it. A spell binds the small horn to that particular dragon sothat its sound may only affect him. However, there are larger hornsthat can be used to appease all dragons alike, if in range of thesound. Specially designed saddles were made for the riders to mounttheir dragons more comfortably and securely, the largest ones beingthe size of small thrones. Armor made of Valyrian steel was sometimescreated for the dragons, to cover the more vulnerable scales of theirchests and belly but only whenever they were to take part in a battleor war.
Whenfree to roam about on their own, the dragons would often prefer tomingle near the Fourteen Flames or the rivers of lava that flowedfrom them into the canals the valyrians built. Or they would lingeron top of the high towers of dragonlord palaces. They would also hunton the wildlife in the valyrian mountains, though it was not uncommonfor the younger dragons ( especially wild ones ) to feed on sheep andgoats and over livestock. For this reason, other dragonlords withlarger and older dragons would fend off the younger ones so that’swhy dragonriders would accompany their young mounts to hunts untilthey learned for themselves where to hunt ( and what to eat ). Thoughthey were restrained sometimes ( as a punishment or precautionarything ), they were not held captive for the valyrians believed thatthe more a dragon is allowed to fly and roam freely, the larger itgrows and the stronger it is.
Alldragons have minds of their own, since they are very intelligentcreatures. Some tend to like humans more than others, and some areeasier to tame than others as well. While there are also those thatonce their rider dies, do allow another to replace them ( after thebond is made ); some absolutely refuse to be mounted by anyone elseagain ( to the point that not even spells seem to work ), so theybecome wild dragons. Azaes was quite attached to Vaedar but thisattachment also makes it pretty jealous, and prone to impulsiveviolence ( more so if hungry ). Once, he almost tried to kill Vaedar’s brother Visenar ( even though he’s known him for his entirelife ) because he could feel him as a threat to his rider ( which wasnot a mistake at all ). But other than these impulsive bouts ofviolence, Azaes is wary of strangers at first but then the distrustis replaced with indifference. He’s quite obedient with Vaedar but hescarcely heeds commands from others, even though he understands whatis spoken to him.
Dragonscan sense distress and fear in humans but that of their riders theyfeel as if it were their own. When dragons outlive their riders, theywould wail and weep or release powerful roars of pain during themoment of their rider’s death. Azaes could feel Vaedar’s desperationand pain when he was drowning in the Summer Sea but only for a shorttime because the dragon died from his wounds before Vaedar finallydrowned.

Bonding Time With My Kids At Fairmont Jaipur
Summer vacations started with a bang. The day elder one’s exams got over we celebrated his birthday and the next day we were flying out to Jaipur to be hosted by Fairmont Jaipur. This must be my ‘nth’ visit to Jaipur but I don’t know what it is about Rajasthan that I keep going back again and again.
Jaipur is a must visit if you want to experience the rich cultural heritage of India. We had already visited the most sought-after sites of the Pink city like the Hawa Mahal, the City Palace, Johari Bazaar etc.
While it looks nothing less than a palace, Fairmont Jaipur was built in 2012 from scratch combining the elements from the Mughal and the Rajputana culture in the memory of the love of Mughal ruler, Akbar, and the Rajput princess, Jodha. It is just ten minutes away from Amer Fort and Nahargarh Fort which makes it a great location if you want to experience Jaipur beyond the city and the city is just 25 minutes away too.
Once you arrive you cannot miss their grand welcome which is specially designed to entice all 5 senses within us. It starts with drum beats followed by rose petal shower, a local song, welcome drinks and a traditional tika welcome. Every detail is very well thought of.
Luckily for me, I met these two lovely bloggers Anupriya Kapur and Aditi Kumar Mathur, who I had interacted with online but hadn’t spent time with offline. They had come along with their kids too. Together all kids formed a mini team and they were pretty much off our hands.
Flamboyant Rooms
The staff had hidden some surprise goodies for my kids when we arrived and there was a mini treasure hunt for the kids to discover the goodies. It was a really sweet gesture. Since a lot of you wanted to know what was in the goodie box; A slate, chalk, a mini Rajasthani puppet and parrot toy. The elder one got a box of assorted chocolates.
The Fairmont Jaipur has around 245 rooms and all rooms look alike and are humongous in size ie anything between 548.76 to 581.04 sq.ft. They are plush and spacious, with four-poster beds, wall decals and world-class amenities. The highlight was the stone bathtubs built in ‘Hamam’ style.
Explore Much?
April is a really hot month in Jaipur and we knew we won’t be exploring much outdoors but after seeing the property all my anxiety was put to rest. There is just so much for the kids to do here. A fully equipped kids play zone, trampoline, a pool, Fussball is the only bystanders because every day they make sure that there are a plethora of activities for the kids to engage in. My kids enjoyed baking their own pizzas from scratch, and my boys have always enjoyed baking since they were kids but we have only been limited to cakes and cupcakes so making their own pizza(btw one of their favourite food) and eating it too was super fun. They also learned to spring in a few kid-friendly concoctions at the bar.
Apart from this, there was movie time at Tangerine and Rajasthani puppet shows and dances in the evening. The kids were pretty much off my hands during the trip and the staff was friendly and very attentive to them. They keep adding to these activities every now and then depending on group size and demand.
If you plan to head to Jaipur when the heat is on top of your head, then you must try their outdoor activities like hot air ballooning, mountaineering at the Aravalli hills, elephant picnics.
Sometimes my kids get inspired too!! Sketching the facade.
They also arrange visits to the local markets and villages for shopping on camels and carts and arrange for elephant rides. Get authentic experiences with the locals.
Food Is An Experience Too
I have not seen such a variety of cuisines under one roof in a long time from Persian food at Zarin to Anjum which celebrates and offers tea from all over the world and offers locals flavours too with a twist to Asmaa a rooftop restaurant with royal cuisine to their vibrant and modern all-day dining at Zoya. There is also Aza, the library bar with low lighting and with the British design when you want just want to spend time with adults and not your mini versions.
One of the highlights of their food experiences was ‘Dabba’ or tiffin service in the room. A lot of times my kids and I feel too lazy to step out of the room to eat food and the Dabba would work pretty well for us, Served in a brass tiffin, we had dal makhni, Gatte ki Kadhi, rice and roti along with some papad, pickle, curd, and onion. Some of the food was quite spicy and while I love spice, the kids had a bit of an issue.  So do ask them to tone the spice while ordering.
The high tea here is another highlight that you shouldn’t miss here. At high tea, they serve classic Indian masala tea, Kuntez, and orange coffee along with Indian sweets and savoury dishes in a three-tier plate setting. You can’t just have enough.
Extra Specials
Who doesn’t love feeling special? There are these tiny extras that they add to their service which shows personal care and really made me and my kids feel special.
Like these chocolates and bakes that use to magically appear in the rooms every day.
And a rose petal bath ready to jump into when I came back in the evening.
Have-It-All
Every part of Fairmont Jaipur has been built on a concept keeping in mind the Indian tradition. The swimming pool has the most offbeat shape but the story connects us to the age when the kinds used to play an Indian dice game called ‘Chaupad’. The same game in which the ‘Pandavas’ lost Draupadi to the ‘Kauravas’ in the epic Mahabharata.
There have built separate pools built keeping in mind that men and women had separate bathing areas in the olden ages. Today this is only in concept and everyone can use the common pool.
There is a fully equipped gym, a traditional spa along with a salon and a shop within the hotel premises. You really don’t need to step out for anything.
This was a most relaxed trip for me and the kids with no agenda and lots of fun. While they have a lot of energy and I wanted to relax on this trip, they had enough and more to keep them busy while I bonded with other blogger moms or wanted to have a peaceful ‘Hamam’ bath. Other times were spent playing games with them, visiting the Amer fort or just enjoying the evening with them. We also did a lot of catching up on Netflix in the nighttime :).
After reading this if you are still thinking “I need a vacation but the timing just isn’t right,” do yourself a favour and take a family trip as it is not about having time but making time. Adios, folks until we meet next time with a lovely trip.
