The only thought in his mind in this cold, midnight-dark standstill was Jesus, this is awkward. "Hey," Pony muttered into the tense air between them, heart pounding so loud the crickets could probably hear it. In an instant, Darry's face fell back into its stone-cold, hard frame. Pony couldn't help but feel like he shot himself in his own damn foot. Everything in his gut told him to just split, to take off and run away and find some damn payphone to call his social worker. Nausea churned in his gut, like a stormy sea, and for some reason, he felt more awful at making Darry angry than having Dar angry at him. He didn't enjoy pushing Darry's buttons, honest! Pony could just never seem to do right by him. He certainly didn't tonight. It was like he was cursed — destined to watch these futures and these new lives pass him by with no way of stepping into them.
