What inspired you to start writing fanfiction?
Oh man it has BEEN a while now!! It took a long time to work up the inspiration/courage to finally try it myself, but I seem to remember it was when I saw other tumblr users ask for prompt requests and write up drabbles for absolutely anything people sent in. So I finally ended up doing the same thing on my old blog myself, requesting drabbles for any of the fandoms I was in, and I fell in LOVE with the practice!! And now I have two 150k+ word fics under my belt that I've written with friends, and boy howdy I love me some exploratory fic writing :3
Whatβs your favorite aspect of fanfiction to write?
Ooooh this is good. I love building up the folklore. I had a Thorki fic going for a while and my FAVORITE part was introducing all the small details that made the world feel organic. This character was now seamlessly physically genderfluid because their magic made it so. That character does witchy shit, drawing sigils and crushing the hanging plants into paste for spells. I find a lot of magic to be very flashy, but mannn for me it's gotta be the subtle, organic, under the radar stuff between important moments that just build the whole world up. This probably wasn't what the question was actually asking but EH IT'S WHAT IM RUNNIN WITH π¬
Whatβs the best or/and worst piece of writing advice youβve ever received?
Ok so I know I'm insanely far from being a professional quality writer. But I have a damn good hold on plot structure/breakdown, and even if I can't always emulate it flawlessly, I know how to get a point across. But there was someone I used to write with, whose quality of writing wasn't the greatest for several reasons, and they would ask me consistently if their writing was good. And because the friendship was less than healthy, I didn't ever feel comfortable giving genuine constructive criticism to help them improve. In comparison, I think I had asked them once what my writing was lacking and how it could improve. And they fucking LAUNCHED into it, ripping on how my dialogue was unrealistic and really needed work, etc etc. And bruh I work HARD at my shit. I spend almost every free hour researching SOMETHING about writing analysis, or plot, or narrative, tools, anything. I know I still have an insanely long way to go before I'm considered anywhere near professional, but lmao they were NOT one to talk, and it was just insulting tbh. Like I can take criticism no problem, but at least know wtf you're talking about before you MansplainTM me some shit, you know? Anyway that absolutely sticks out in my mind as worst lmao. For best writing advice, though, man I find a LOT of good shit on here that I stash in my writing reference and writing positivity tags. The most recent ones would be "keep your focus on what you find fun and makes you happy," "you don't have to be published to be a writer, you just have to write," "don't focus so much on the formula of plot structure, focus on what's realistic for your story." Those are what's coming to mind as best, and honestly? Hell yeah, let the fun drive this shitshow!! π
