Nana Patekar in long hair dancing like he's got no fucks left to give. Not what I was expecting with this movie, not even what I was honestly looking for (in anything!), but now that I have it, I don't think if anything else can live up to it (that's a lie - I just recently saw a song from the Ajay Devgan - back when he still had an 'a' in his last name - movie Gundaraj, where a Insta comment mentioned something to the effect of 'this is why he doesn't dance anymore,' so that's probably next up to watch). But, the point remains - wow, was not expecting that!
Also, and my mind is clearly clouded by recent (and even not-so-recent) movies that they've both been in, but if you'd told me a movie would have a Nana Patekar/Tabu romance track, this is 100% not what I would have predicted. Or guessed, even if you'd given me a million guesses.
In the foreground of that is the actual story - Nana's military man is sent out to discover if Amitabh's 'dada' (mobster) personality is real, or if he's actually a presumed-dead, so-called-traitor military man in hiding. And in the background of that is a poorly-developed story of some young man (who gets to dance with Ayesha Jhulka a bit, and see a reveal, before both him and Ayesha completely disappear from the story). Jackie Shroff also has a "in flashback only" guest appearance (except for the first scenes of the movie, where he gets to play a dead body) - and while you can sort of assume what his story is going to be, it takes a very unBollywood approach of being entirely focused on his actions as a military man doesn't really dig into her personal relationship with Amitabh at all (usually these types of movies spend too much time building up their friendship to justify why the still living one wants revenge so badly for the dead one; this movie bypasses all of that).
You also have the fact that the bad guy literally goes from "do anything to save my daughter" (though, honestly, that was probably entirely a ploy for political power and not because he really wants her saved - also, how the hell did Amitabh know that bit when he was telling his story?) to "die bitch" in like, seconds. And other bad guys who are constantly just pointlessly running around in the forests, waiting to get picked off one-by-one.
I know you don't need to show everything, but they never explain how Amitabh survived a clearly deadly car crash (or how, if there was no body, the military immediately declared him dead) or how Nana survived all those bullets and then showed up unscathed (it couldn't have been a bulletproof vest, because it definitely looked like there was blood there - I think). Or why they're brilliant plan was to let the bad guy be treated like a martyr (even if, at the end and even before that, they joke that statues are made to be forgotten and that they're essentially just literal shitposts for birds). They didn't have him confess to anything - which is fine, I guess, since he's dead and the being chased by the other bad guy allowed the other guy to be killed too, but still - seems like a pretty flimsy plan.
For someone who claims to have had 49 encounters (also, this idea of 'encounter specialist' blows my mind - like, you're literally announcing that you find bad guys and shoot them instead of taking them to prison?), Tabu's cop characters gets a total of 0 action scenes after her entrance. Instead it's just her and Nana staring at each other, thinking thoughts but not speaking - until she dreamingly sings a song with him while really flooding her house.
Kohram: The Explosion - a movie with a plethora of explosions. And one dancing Nana Patekar. Politicians are, universally, complete asshats. What a stain on humanity and society that we've allowed politicians, as a group, to not only exist, but also persist.
