The Vault (2021)

The Vault delivers the bare minimum. Is that enough to earn it a watch? I was torn but I'm going to say "no". While you might not be sorry you sat down with it, there are so many other, better movies you’d rather watch instead it's kind of a waste of your time.

When Walter (Liam Cunningham) and his crew of underwater salvagers find the lost treasure of Guadalupe, they’re elated… until the Spanish government seizes it. Determined to get back what’s his, Walter approaches gifted engineering student Thom (Freddie Highmore) and asks for his help to break into the impenetrable Bank of Spain.

There’s a reason why I remained entertained during The Vault. The titular strongroom possesses a unique safety mechanism and breaking into it seems impossible at first. You want to see how the team is going to do it, and how each of the specialists employed will fit in. There’s Lorraine (Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey) the con artist; Simon (Luis Tosar), the guy who can get anything; Klaus (Axel Stein), the computer hacker; and James (Sam Riley), Walter’s long time partner. We have a tight deadline and the movie is set during the 2010 World Cup so the streets are packed with soccer fans, which you know will add a bit of an overseas flair to the whole thing.

The credits show that a whopping six writers worked on the script and I have no idea how that’s possible. The Vault feels like the skeleton upon which you’d build your cool heist movie, not a finely honed machine. Thom is so bland he’s like diet water. We don’t know why he would throw away the jobs he's offered and risk jail for a bunch of strangers, except that he thinks Lorraine is hot. Anyone watching would tell him he doesn’t stand a chance because the two performers have no chemistry whatsoever but that won't stop the movie. None of the characters have any presence and only the thinnest semblance of a personality, which means the heist has to do all of the heavy lifting, and frankly, it isn't interesting enough to manage. You’re not even sure why you should want the thieves to get away with this operation. Walter found the treasure without obtaining the proper permit, after all. I think we’re supposed to feel as though it belongs to Walter because he’s English and the pirate who stole it from Spain in the 1500s was English? Or maybe the bank's head of security (José Coronado) scowling a lot and nearly taking things too far towards the end is supposed to be enough?

The Vault doesn’t feel like it lasts nearly two hours, though this might be due to its underwritten characters and familiar plot. This does make it an easy watch, however, and though there’s nothing about the film that will remain in your memory down the line, it’s generally pleasant. This one’s a close call but there’s just no reason to watch it over any movie about thieves you’ve enjoyed before. (August 27, 2021)
